"You had something horrible happen to you and you used it to make yourself beautiful."

Okay, easily my favorite couple I've read by Nora in a while. Althea and Colt fit so seamlessly together, understood each other so quickly. I love softer romances so much because it brings the focus to the trust that develops between your couple. This was such a good read. I loved finding out what was in Althea's past that had her all knotted out, and I loved that she felt comfortable enough to share it with Colt. That he didn't have to bully it out of her, she just shared. There was so much honesty between them.

When he told her he thought he might be in love and then said "For all I know it's a touch of the flu" I swear I laughed out loud, because how cute is that? Just imagine, I love you, but it might be the flu, we'll see. So cute!

I loved getting even more about Cilla and Boyd. Their family just gets sweeter with every book. I loved the friendship between Boyd and Colt, and that it was present for almost the entire book. I just, I really liked this one. I liked the story. I liked the couple. I liked the characters. But my favorite part has to have been Colt's persistence on him and Althea getting married and the scene at the end when she finally agreed. He was so shocked, and I melted right into the floor.

Thank you, Nora, for perfect little romances like this.

This is the first book in this series I have actually liked. Great romance, wonderful mystery/suspense and, unfortunately, a trigger issue (rape). The issue is very well written and a testament to Nora's skill as a writer even at this early stage in her career. Also, a point to note is that this book is 30 years old and, tech issues aside, it doesn't show its' age.

Cole Nightshade has had wide range of experiences and had finally settled down on a ranch in Wyoming. He is in Denver, CO on the trail of the runaway 15-year-old daughter of friends. He turns to an old friend with the Denver police for help in finding the girl.

Althea Grayson is a Lieutenant with the Denver police department. She is the cop assigned to keep Cole in line and out of trouble. Not exactly what Thea has in mind while trying to find the runaway girl, but she soon discovers that Nightshade has his uses.

When an informant is murdered the trail takes a sinister turn and Cole and Thea find that even though they have vast differences in how to conduct the investigation, they also have great respect and trust in each other that they will find the girl.

"I'm in love with you. Big-time. No, don't pull away from me." He tightened his grip before she could. "I've never said that to another woman. I used alternate terms." He smiled a little. "I'm crazy about you, you're special to me, that kind of thing. But I never used love, not until you."

"Nightshade" is the story of Althea and Colt.

What a WONDERFUL book and what a LOVELY COUPLE!

A suspense, drama, angst and oodles of love filled book, with a kickass lieutenant heroine and a determined ex-Air force troubleshooter hero. They meet when a roadside shooting puts him on the spot, and soon start working together to locate a trafficked child. Their journey is perilous, filled with kidnappings, plane ditches, shootings, bloodshed- but it is also filled with romance- the pursuit, the equality in their roles, the sweet declarations by the hero, the oh so sexy lovemaking, the comfort and so much angst.

The hero and heroine were one of the best characters I've read in a long time- well drawn out, brave, independent and capable of so love much, forgiveness and surrender. She had a scarred past, he had seen enough tragedy. Together, they incinerated yet healed each other. She was a badass that loved babies, he was a tough guy who serenaded her. But they best part was that they made me laugh with their insane banter, and his puppy eyed devotion. And that they did not give up on each other.

"Is this an interrogation or an engagement?" she demanded.

"Both, but this is the last one. Why are you going to marry me?''

"Because you nagged me until I broke down. And I felt sorry for you, because you seemed so set on it. Besides, I love you, and I've kind of gotten used to you, so-"

"Hold on. Say that again."

"I said I've kind of gotten used to you."

The book is also connected to previous in the series, with familiar characters recurring in their HEA.

A really enjoyable re-read. Althea I really liked as a character – she’s smart, confident and kick-ass.

The chemistry between Colt and Althea manifests well overall, and didn’t feel false.

Colt’s initial thoughts when it comes to Althea made me want to give him a slight/gentle slap on the head to say come on really. Initially Colt seriously underestimates Althea:

If a man had to have a partner, she might as well be easy on the eyes. In any case, Colt didn’t instead to work with Althea so much as through her. She would be his conduit to the official end of the investigation. He’d keep his word – he always did, except when he didn’t – and feed her whatever information he gathered. Not that he expected her to do much with it.

There were only a handful of cops Colt respected, with Boyd topping the list. As far as Lieutenant Grayson was concerned, Colt figured she’d be decorative, marginally helpful and little else.

The badge, the bod and the sarcasm would probably be useful when it came to interviewing any possible connections.

This had me rolling my eyes, a little, whilst simultaneously smiling in glee since I knew sooner or later Roberts would ensure Colt would be eating his words/thoughts, one way or another. Luckily, we only see this from Colt really early in the book and Colt quickly comes to appreciate the fabulousness that is Detective Althea Grayson.

There were some characteristics of Althea and Colt, as well as some of their interactions which seriously reminded me of Eve and Roarke from the author’s In Death series.

Some of the interactions between Colt and Althea mid-way through the book and in the second half of the book, had me smiling in delight.

It was also nice seeing Boyd and Cilla (from book one in the series) pop up in this book, with their kids.

Though this story held as much intensity as the previous two in the Night Tales series (maybe even a little more of it, thanks to the topic), it was also thinly veiled with humor, thanks to the hero, Colt Nightshade, and his "shenanigans".
It wasn't made humorous to mock the topic of abuse and violence, but to keep it from sinking under its weight. And I guess that's what Colt's character was all about. He was an intensely passionate man, but kept it all hidden under a veneer of light banter and jokes. Needless to say, I loved the man.

He was, IMO, perfect for Lieutenant Grayson, balancing her our, creating a perfect couple. I loved the two separately, and I loved them together. They were good for each other...and for the case.

And though this was yet another great NR suspense story, I felt it also concentrated more on the romance aspect of the plot. Neither of the two took over, but complimented each other, the first adding weight, the other adding some much needed "lightness". A perfect balance.

And a perfect score.

We follow a cop named Althea, who is a badass basically and when she is investigating a case about a missing girl, she finds the guy Colt, who also happens to be working for the same cause. So far, good..What could have potentially been an action packed thriller ,crime novel loses it's point and sidetracks into a cringy romance between our main characters. The protagonist Colt Nightshade, after whom the book is titled after starts off by giving an impression of a funny , lively yest mysterious guy, but soon, this fades off into him being recognized by traits mainly like desire ,desperation and being the clingy and pushing sort of guy. He has a pinch of humor in his lines ,but this did not make me overlook his cringy behaviour. The story quicky sidetracks from the main plot and returns to it much later in the book, only to be done with the part that's been built up for so long to end in a short span. The story isn't structured well at all. I could honestly skip most of the middle part of the book and still be able to understand what happens.

I didn't like it much, didn't dislike it also, it was just okay, nothing special.
The heroine keeps addressing the hero with his surname, is all independent and self-sufficient, the hero makes all the moves, oh and she also has a lot of past baggage(abused as a child).
He's a former air-force guy, lawyer and does a lot of other stuff and is searching for the daughter of a friend, partners up with Thea, who is a Lieutenant and is attracted like hell to her. The romance didn't work that well, the hero starts staying stuff like I think I love you, let's get married etc while she says nothing and has that wth look on her face, so not very satisfying.

This started out well. Really liked Althea to begin with feisty beautiful took no crap, Colt appeared to be an alpha type hero who might have an interesting past and expected Althea to be something pretty to look at while he did what he pleased in the investigation. The story quickly jumped from colt admiring Althea to worshiping her. This was met with a repeatedly cold Althea rebuking him. I got really sick of Althea and cringed at Colt.

The suspense always takes a back seat for me but I'm always happy when it's good and builds the characterisation of the MC`S. In this case the suspense was worse than the romance.

Writing style good but felt dated.

I loved this book from the Night tales series! After reading a story and becoming vested in the character, the end of the story is something bittersweet. One of my favorite parts of Nora Robert’s series is the inclusion of characters from previous stories in the series!

A nothing read. There is absolutely no value in this book. The writing style is also very old-fashioned. I detested it. I found myself becoming very irritated with the obsession over the character's looks. In almost every sentence the writer has to stress the beauty of her character. It was such a generic story. Boy meets girl, sparks fly, they don't get along, dark pasts etc. These sorts of books might have worked in the time it was published, but definitely not now, unlike books written by George Orwell, Jane Austen, and many other prominent writers. Some of Nora's other books I have enjoyed, but this one was just awful. Maybe it's time for new writers, with more open-minded, realistic writing.

Colt Nightshade's friends ask for his help in finding their teenage daughter who has run away so he promises to find her. He likes to work alone and doesn't worry about following the rules but his friend, the Captain of the Denver police department makes him partner with Lieutenant Althea Grayson, who always follows the rules. Althea was the captain's former partner. Since he knows them both well he thinks they will work well together. Even though they are opposites and used to handling cases differently, they are very attracted to each other.

I didn't care that this was a very old book; I do love Nora Roberts writing. It was so nice to read about a romance that built slowly and the couple liked each other as people as well as were physically attracted to each other.

"In falling they had suffered the torments of love. She had never been certain the joys balanced those torments."

I was screaming the entire time, because this was basically Eve and Roarke!❤️😭
Well, at least the backbone of them. But everything that makes them what they are, everything was there. And it was too much for me to stay objective and not compare and imagine it wasn't actually Eve and Roarke.
Sooo, I'm not sure if I actually loved the book or was just fangirling the whole time about characters that weren't technically even in the book.

""An attractive man," she thought objectively, "nicely polished on the outside, a pity he was so ordinary on the inside.""

Althea was giving me such an Eve vibe. The job always coming first, threatening men and generally being uninterested in their pathetic attempts to woo her. That's my girl.
She totally had that no nonsense attitude, getting things done and not having any time for distractions. Well, until a very good looking distraction came along.

"If a man had to have a partner, she might as well be easy on the eyes."

"Cole liked families, other peoples, in any case."

While not crazy billionaire rich, Cole still had some streaks of Roarke. Like the shady, thieving side and the charming, adoring side towards Eve, in this case, Althea. There were some little things too that just could not go unnoticed.
Like, giving her aspirin for her headache, feeding her and fussing over her, calling her darling...😍
I did not know what I was signing up for when I started this book.
Also, unlike Roarke at least he could cook. 🤭

"For death always drew them (spectators), (..) greedy, Althea knew, for a glimpse of death to reaffirm that they were alive and untouched."

Starting with a dead snitch? Sounds familiar as well.
This book just made me so happy with flashbacks of Naked in Death. Because while Althea was a more feminine version of Eve, she and Cole just had that crazy chemistry Eve and Roarke has. Not to mention the case was very similar to the one in the first book in the In Death series as well.
It felt like going over all their firsts again and it made me way too nostalgic for the good old days.
Although, I have to say, not the first kiss at some place used to make porn. Underage porn at that.😬

While this book was filled with pretty serious topics, it also had its humor in just the right places and in just the right amount. Here are some of my faves:

"People talked around him cause he looked like his brain would fit in a tea cup but he was smart."

"He had to admire her driving. He had no choice since she was behind the wheel and his life was in her hands."

"One of the major problems of having kids, as he saw it, was that parents were forced to go back to school."

"You're too good looking to be selling something I don't want."

" I can't please everybody, so I please myself." Amen to that, Cole.🤣

""Who the hell are you, Nightshade?"
"Why, I'm the answer to your prayers.""
☠️😂

For all the laughs, there were plenty of tears too. The case was heavy and personal, and very similar to what Eve had to go through. Still, Althea's character development in just one book instead of 50 was interesting to see. Maybe it did feel rushed but it was still wholesome.

""I still feel so empty inside, like a part of me is not there anymore."
"You'll fill it with something else. You can't let this block off your feelings for other people. It can make you strong, Liz, but you don't want it to make you hard.""

"When you're a child, you do nothing. You're at the mercy of adults and the reality is, the great many adults have no mercy."

Her nightmares and what she said about being the victim made my heart ache. How what happened to her only made her better understand what it is to be a victim and I think it only made her better at her job, because she knows and she cares. It has always awed me how hard and distant she can make herself to be and appear for other people, as well, when actually she's so empathetic and compassionate.

"Old scars. They only ache at odd moments."

"I'm the same person I was before I told you. The trouble is, after people hear a story like that, they change."

The main storyline, at least for me, was, you guessed it, the romance. I could not get enough of those two. The banter was so good and so witty, them both trying to outsmart each other when really it just showed how similar they were.

"All those layers. Can't say I've ever run into a woman that had me just as interested in peeling the layers of her psyche as peeling off her clothes."

"I wouldn't want to hurt her but I can't promise it won't happen. The thing is, Fletch, for the first time I've run into a woman who matters enough to hurt me back."

When he told her that he thought he loved her and she would have been less shocked if he pulled a gun on her. So Eve.
I, honestly, could go on and on but the bottom line is, they were the best.

"He wanted her to let go, to tumble with him wherever the moment took them, to yield to him even as he yielded to her. To gamble when she wasn't sure of the odds."

Favorite quote: "You've had enough coffee."❤️❤️❤️

In case someone missed it, yes, I loved this book. The characters, the plot, everything was great and full of heart. It was strange at some points, like two worlds colliding but, ultimately, it was an amazing reading experience.
4 stars because, well, it wasn't Eve and Roarke.

"Too many lives get lost in the cracks, it means something when you can pull one out."

P.S Emergency landing would send Eve in a frenzy.

P.P.S Althea and sugared almonds ❤️ (I know I'm too deep into this)

P.P.P.S That cover is atrocious.

I read this years ago. I think the TV show Bones is based on this storyline. Strict Ice Princess with a cowboy cop can be explosive. This one is not too bad. It is Ms. Roberts who still wrote sweet contemporary w/o the edge.
