Former soldier and newbie deputy Candela “Candy” Serrano is assigned as a liaison to Steve Hawks, the handsome host of TV’s Ghostly Ties. She’s skeptical of Steve’s purposes, since chasing supernatural shadows isn’t Candy’s idea of police work—until some very real killings start occurring around town. Suddenly, Candy and Steve find themselves struggling to track down who’s behind these vicious crimes…and how far they’ll go to keep long-buried secrets from surfacing.

Former military person, now newbie deputy Candy Serrano is tasked with following around after Steve Hawks who's in town to meet with a family whose daughter is being frightened by something. Is it a ghost? Steve doesn't think so. It's his job on his tv show to debunk such notions--if he can find a real reason for the child's terrors.
As Candy helps him by introducing him to various people in town, they begin to unearth (literally) cues to a previous death along with the new ones that keep occurring, but who is the killer and will they be next?
My exploration of Harlequin romances continues with my first Harlequin Intrigue. The premise sounded interesting, so I thought I would give it a shot.
It felt like something was missing with this book. It was fun, for sure. If it wasn't I wouldn't have finished it, but it felt very surface level. Even the romance felt kind of tacked on. There were some interesting ideas, but none of them truly took hold.
I'm still going to keep checking out the line, I think this was my last trip to Conard County.
I just couldn't get into it, I kept thinking it'd get better. Rachel Lee in the past was good, capital G. I finally started skipping ahead reading then skipping again.
Also bad research on this one, US census are not released for 72 years after the official date of the census. Example the 1950 US census will be released to the public 1 April 2022 but the book has the deputy supposedly researching the 1960 & 1970 US census.
I really enjoyed the book. It is always nice to have characters from previous books appear. Steve and Candy were strong characters. I would like a second book with both of them in which Steve would help Candy overcome some of her issues.
Always read the Conard County series and enjoy them Like that characters from previous books may make an appearance and that the town iOS basically the same. A fast read, it I liked it.
I really liked this book. I liked the characters and the plot of this story. Interesting line of work for Steve. Looking forward to reading the next installment of this series.
