Rate this book
A MYSTERIOUS ATTACK. AN UNEXPECTED HERO. A DIABOLICAL SCHEME.

Amber didn't plan on leaving home to find the dangerous attacker, but pixies can be pretty convincing.

When a strange creature attacks Amber's sleepy village and burns one of the fields, the townsfolk prepare for the next assault. But the mischievous pixies in the nearby forest pull Amber from the town meeting and give her a different goal.

Armed only with her archery skills and a pixie nudging, 12-year-old Amber bravely sets out to discover why this is happening and how to stop it.

But her journey becomes far more important than imagined. The attack seems to be a small part of a greater diabolical plan. One that could cost innocent lives and push Amber to the frontlines of the battle.

She'll need help from new friends Basil and Theo, insights from a hard-to-find wizard, and knowledge of ancient powers capable of matching the encroaching evil. Otherwise, the peaceful world she knows may disappear forever.

An epic coming-of-age fantasy adventure for young and older readers alike!

Fans who love Young Adult epic fantasies like Wings of Fire and Percy Jackson will love this novel, Book 1 in The Elementalists series.

Ephie Risho

Ephie Risho is the author of two fantasy series that span audiences and styles—from laugh-out-loud contemporary adventures to sweeping epic quests.

His newest project, The Stone of Amun-Ra, blends humor, heart, and high-stakes mystery into a modern fantasy thriller. The first book, The Unbearable Luck of Being Mitzy, follows Stanley “Mitzy” Mitz and his ragtag friends from Montana who stumble upon a glowing shard that changes their lives forever. The artifact grants Mitzy impossible good luck—but also draws the attention of secret societies, ruthless agents, and powers that trace back to ancient Egypt. What begins as a midnight meteor shower quickly spirals into a globe-spanning chase filled with danger, banter, and unlikely heroism.

Risho is also the co-author—along with his oldest child, Blue—of The Elementalists, a sweeping YA epic that blends classic quest fantasy with contemporary heart. Perfect for readers 8–13 (and family read-alouds), the series follows friends whose bond is tested by goblin wars, ancient magic, and choices that carry real consequences. Expect brisk pacing, big set-pieces, and an undercurrent of hope: courage grows, friendships harden into family, and even impossible odds can be outwitted.

The Elementalists — Book by Book

Phoenix Rising (Book 1)
When fire rains down on her village, twelve-year-old archer Amber discovers a spark within herself—real elemental power she can barely control. Teaming up with bold Basil and big-hearted Theo, she uncovers a plot that threatens the realm far beyond her valley. Between midnight escapes, woodland skirmishes, and a perilous trek into enemy territory, Amber must decide what kind of hero she’ll be: a lone ember that burns out…or the spark that lights a beacon. A propulsive origin story about bravery, belonging, and the first price of power.

Crodor the Ancient (Book 2)
A massive goblin host marches on Arendon—but the goblins are puppets, controlled by wizards who want the kingdom to tear itself apart. The only shot at survival? Freeing Crodor the Ancient, a legendary red dragon bound by a cruel spell. To break the curse, Amber, Basil, Theo, and their friends must outwit treacherous mountain clans, solve an elemental riddle, and face the terrifying question at the heart of the war: can you trust a dragon you’ve been raised to fear? Expect siege battles, dragon flight, and a pact that will change everything.

Secret of the Kraken (Book 3)
With the land war stalled, the trail turns seaward—to myths whispered by sailors and a map no dwarf will admit to drawing. The Elementalists venture into storm-lashed waters, where emperors bargain in half-truths and a colossal Kraken guards what it was sworn to keep: clues to a scepter powerful enough to tip the balance against the wizards. In hidden cities and bioluminescent caverns, loyalties are tested and a heartbreaking choice emerges: to claim power, someone must pay the debt the ocean is owed.

The Twelfth Scepter (Book 4)
Prophecy speaks of twelve scepters—eleven known, one lost—that together can either heal the world…or end it. As the wizards rally behind a ruthless queen and darkness lengthens, the Elementalists race to assemble the final pieces before the last eclipse. Old mentors return, betrayals come due, and each hero must wield their gift at full strength—fire, earth, water, air, plants and animals—no longer as children learning control, but as guardians willing to sacrifice. From sky-bridges across the world to a final confrontation where friendship itself becomes a weapon, the series crescendos to a payoff that’s earned, surprising, and deeply satisfying.

Across both series, Risho writes fantasy with a modern edge—fast-paced, witty, and heartfelt—where ordinary kids and twenty-somethings alike discover they’re capable of extraordinary things. Start with Phoenix Rising or dive into The Unbearable Luck of Being Mitzy and meet your new favorite found family.

The cover photo of the book is absolutely gorgeous and I was intrigued into reading it because of it. The blurb of the book piqued my curiosity and I was eager to dive into the story. I am glad I did, because I had a wonderful reading experience.

The first in The Elementalists series ideal for young fantasy readers. The story involves a lot of creatures including young humans, goblins, pixies, dragons, and phoenix just to name a few. The humans are in a mission to find out what started a fire in their town. The fire is very dangerous especially for the pixies who live in the woods.

Readers will relate to kids their own age in the story and be brought into their world of magic and danger. There are a few illustrations and each chapter starts with an illustration. I loved this part of the book. The book is clearly meant to be a series because it ends right where the next book can pick up.

An incredible journey...Don't Wait! Grab On!

If you start this book, I predict you will finish it in nearly no time at all, like it is magically unfolding before you.

Not all books are this special. It takes a certain type of magic to take you alongside adventurers and fly with the likes of a phoenix.

Hear me on this: Take only your trusted and beloved on this journey with you, and my what amazing things you will learn.

Ephie Risho I met at Middlebury College, before I became a book reviewer. Who knew it would be magic that decided we would cross paths again, thanks to the ideas and imagination of a talented mage named Celia, who wove a spell that wrote a story. Truly this is a special book.

Any adventurers are sure to recognize a kindred spirit. And by my count there at a few more elementalists to join the crew.... I wonder if one of them might be ..... you?

With elements of several major beloved children's fantasy series, the Elementalists series is sure to find itself shelved among the greats. This epic fantasy journey features a trio of courageous, smart, talented kids who are doing what they must to save the people they care about while forging an unexpected bond of friendship.

This time, the initial "chosen one" is a girl, but like in most fantasy stories it would seem, she has two male friends accompanying her. There is even a third one kind of circling in the background, as well as a much older mentor/teacher. If the story were more adult, I'd almost suggest it were going to devolve into a reverse harem situation. It feels like this series has the potential to grow with the kids, much like Harry Potter did. And the trio reminds me of those golden three, in good ways. They even have a game called Castles that stirs up memories of late night game's of Wizards chess.

The system of magic and magical creatures in this series is well developed, intricate, and beautiful. I look forward to learning more about it as the time goes. I look forward to seeing how the friendships grow and what kinds of adventures the trio has as the series develops.

One small rant though. I know these stories are for kids, but why are they always featuring kids? Are they not encouraging the kids to do dangerous things? Like where are these kids parents? Isn't it neglectful and horrible that they've let their children wander off with goblins and trolls and other dangerous creatures about? This is very confusing to me, and no one ever talks about it. Not something I thought about before I had a child.

Who's It For?

This book is a middle grade fantasy and is marketed for 8 to 15 year olds. It has exciting adventure and scary elements, so it seems appropriate for all of those ages. No hints of romance really, so safe in that regard. It also depicts children engaging in unsafe activities unsupervised, which is common in the genre.

Content Warnings: Scary Scenes, Violence, Death, Fire Destruction, Home Loss

I can say that as the blurb suggests Phoenix Rising is perfect for fans who love Percy Jackson and other middle grade and young adult epic fantasy series. Despite being in my thirties I thoroughly enjoyed the first instalment in The Elementalists series and cannot wait to read the others.

Now we know I dislike spoilers but I will say that I loved that we were dropped straight into the world and action. The world building felt natural as well which I adored. We learn about the world, it’s inhabitants and magical creatures as we follow Amber and later Basil and Theo and it isn’t via information being thrown at us at the start or when a new creature or feature of the world is revealed. I personally love this style of fantasy writing since it helps the story and plot flow while explaining how the world works.

In terms of characters this really excels. I loved the trio we are introduced to and it does give a sort of young questing party vibes you might find from dungeons and dragons or your other preferred tabletop roleplaying game. I loved Amber, Basil and Theo but I also loved the supporting characters as well, particularly Sage. I also loved all the different creatures and their descriptions too. Honestly I pretty much loved everything about it!

I think this is the perfect book for those who are looking for a bridge from middle grade to young adult or like myself who just love a good epic fantasy no matter their age. It’s full of all the things that make fantasy one of my favourite genres, forming friendships with a touch of found fantasy, epic adventures, battles, magical and mythical creatures and a well built world.

This was a very cute fantasy book. I loved seeing all the different magical creatures and how they interacted (Flurry and the Phoenix were the best of course).

The magic system was really cool, I liked that Earth and plants were separated it opened up the realm of possibilities for sure.

Amber is such a little adventurer she really just went for it, and the band of people she gathered along the way are pretty cool. I especially liked seeing Theo grow out of his shell (I'm definitely jealous of his power).

I really liked all the artwork within the book! It really elevated the scenes.

This is the first book in an exciting new fantasy series aimed at younger readers - 8-15 year olds - The Elementalists.

This is the first time I've read fantsay that's aimed at this younger age group and I absolutely loved it!

The writing style was amazing - full of detail with an exciting plot that was well thought through and presented.

Our main character is super relatable, especially to the target audience and I loved that Amber is learning her skills and powers as we travel on the journey with them.
Starting out together allowed me to connect more with Amber and I found that I was rooting for her throughout.

The world building and magic was really well woven into the storyline, so we never get too bogged down with reams of information, it just flows nicely from start to finish.

I have to admit that I'm totally hooked now and can't wait to see what book 2 brings us.

Phoenix Rising is the first book in The Elementalist Book Series. My daughter and I had a great time reading this together. We are huge fan of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson and this felt like those reads. This would be a great tv show. The adventure you will go on it magical. The writing flows nicely and its easy to follow my 10 years was happy to read it to me at times. Amber is a great FMC and my kid had nothing but great thinks to say about her character.

First up can we just take a moment to appreciate the beautiful artwork on the cover of this book. I was drawn to it as soon as I saw it,  and there are more stunning pictures throughout the book.

Despite being way out of the targeted age range for this book (8-15) I thoroughly enjoyed it.  My inner child just could not stop reading. Magical creatures, wizards and a mystery to solve.  Utterly perfect.  I can't wait to get started on book 2.

I also now know what at least one of my niblings will be getting for Christmas!

Phoenix Rising is a great adventure read. I'm not the target audience but I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to sharing it with my kids when they're a bit older.
I would have loved this when I was younger especially as its Amber (the FMC) that starts off on the adventure herself and not as a sidekick. A lot of the adventures I read when I was younger involved the main adventurer being a boy, which there is nothing wrong with per se, but it's nice to see this is different.
I found this engaging and easy to read and follow. Looking forward to starting book two now!

This was such an amazing book to read. Especially after reading the blurb of the book I was intrigued I couldn't wait to read it as I was so excited. And I am so happy that I have read this book. I enjoyed reading this book, the writing style was spectacular. It made it so nice to read. The characters within this book which were so interesting to read. They developed throughout the book, with what they had to go on through this book. With what the characters had to go through in this book it was very intriguing. With everything that on in this book, and with how it ended I will be continuing this series.

This book is full of adventure and fun. It made me feel like a child again with that uninhibited sense of curiosity and fearlessness. The main characters are children who are trying to find their place in the world and discover what it is they are destined to become.
The story is written by father and daughter and you can feel both their influence come through in the writing. The characters develop organically as the story progresses and you are rooting for them all the way. A great fantasy story for a younger audience.
This is not my normal genre but I have to say I really enjoyed the adventure and the added art work throughout the book.

A huge thank you goes to Ephie & Celia Risho for reaching out to me about Phoenix Rising, book one in their YA fantasy series, The Elementalists! This gorgeous book has been such an adventure, filled with mischievous magic & a kingdom in danger. How could anyone pass up an opportunity to dive into such a tale?! Let’s give you an overview…

Even though Amber is only twelve, when a creature sets her community ablaze she’s determined to track down the mastermind behind it. The pixies in the forest urge her on, & Amber races to find answers even as the realm begins to darken. Can Amber & the friends she makes along the way fight the great evil seeping across the land? Why has she been chosen as the spokesperson for the forest? Is it even possible for a group of young teenagers to save the kingdom before it all burns?

The evil magical creatures are ferocious, just as the pixies are delightfully capricious. Ephie & Celia know how to draw a reader into a story! It may sound odd, but it’s like a glass of fizzy lemonade: once you take a sip, you experience all of the joyous fun. How could this not be a happiness boost?!

Phoenix Rising has been a journey back into the very best of the YA fantasy genre for me. I try not to do comparisons very often, but if you’ve loved Brandon Mull’s Fablehaven series, Kate Forsyth’s Chronicles of Estelliana series, or the Inkworld trilogy by Cornelia Funke? You're going to fall in love with this first instalment in The Elementalists! There’s just a wholesome whimsy about it, with a vibrant colour & heart emanating from every page...

Hold onto your hats, folks, because "Phoenix Rising" just hit the shelves like a literary tornado! I dove into this magical world alongside the kiddos, and let me tell you, it was a wild ride. The authors, Ephie and Celia Risho, brought back that childhood thrill of endless adventures and enchantment.

The pace of the story was like a well-tuned rollercoaster - fast, thrilling, and we were all in for the ride. We couldn't help but cheer for the characters, totally invested in their journey from start to finish. And that magic system? Mind-blowing! The authors must have some kind of wizardry themselves to dream up such a fantastical world with rules that keep you hooked.

But the real star of the show? Nostalgia. Not just for the fantasy setting, but for those dog-eared books we used to tear through as kids. "Phoenix Rising" captures that same excitement, making it just as easy to devour. And let's talk about the artwork – it's like a sneak peek into the story, and most times, it's spot-on with what we imagined. Total win!

Now, the waiting game begins for the next installment. We're counting down the days for the next chapter of this epic adventure. "Phoenix Rising" has cast its spell on us, and we're all under its enchanting influence!

Phoenix Rising is the exciting first installment in the Elementalists series, and is a magical, fantastical, immersive tale in which we follow our main character, the intrepid 12 year old Amber.

The peace in Amber's sleepy village has been utterly shattered by the appearance of a fire breathing beast from the sky who wreaks havoc, setting all aflame.

In search of answers and in effort to stop the entire coast from falling victim to the terrifying winged creature, Amber sets out from Seabrook on a journey of discovery, magic and adventure in this coming-of-age tale that I'm sure will hold your attention until the very end.

All in all, an impressive start to the series that I read with our 12 year old Daughter over about a week or so.

You'll meet some wonderfully imaginative characters along the way and will discover a visionary fantasy world.

Can't wait for part 2.

As soon as I read the blurb of this book my interest was piqued, I found it so intriguing and knew it would be something I would enjoy reading and reviewing, however, it was even better than I imagined.

This was a quick and easy read for me that gripped me in its phoenix claws and release me from its grasp until way after I had finished it. It was well written with a compelling adventure that was perfectly paced and full of delightful characters that were all well developed and who I absolutely adored. I found the book to be so descriptive and so vivid that I felt like I was really there for the adventure, it was so visceral for me. I really wish I had been.

This book is magical in every sense of the word, I didn't want it to be over and I cannot wait to read more in the series

What can I say? This book was epic! If you like stories with magical powers, mythical creatures and good vs. evil, then this one is for you. When Amber's villagers attacked by a fire-breathing creature, she must set out on a journey to find the culprit and the reason for all the strange creatures appearing nearby. Amber is young, but incredibly brave, knowledgeable and skilled with a bow and arrow. She and her friends, Basil and Theo, soon learn that they possess elemental powers. They have to dig deep to discover new parts of their inner being if they're going to defeat the evil queen who is determined to take over the human world. This book is fast paced and exciting. The world building is fantastic, taking the reader right into the heart of the story. I can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens.

This is the first book in The Elementalists series. After reading the book description I was intrigued to see where the storyline developed and went. And wow this book definitely didn't disappoint.

Phoenix Rising is an incredible fantasy read, which is full of magical and wonderful characters from pixies to dragons to so many more. This was so beautifully written and has the most amazing illustrations at the beginning of each chapter. The storyline was amazingly detailed that you could picture the characters and all the adventures as you read.

This book is aimed for young readers, but no matter how old you are, this book will be enjoyed by all ages. This was such an incredible read full of fun and amazing adventures.

This seemed promising but the writing was lacking. The characterization and dialogue didn’t ring true for me. It seemed out of place for the setting. And the 12 year old just breezes off by herself on a quest? No gravity of danger was communicated to the reader to create tension or buy- in. Oookay. The whole thing just didn’t seem plausible. And isn’t that the job of the author- to suspend reality and create plausibility?

I found this a very easy read , one that you can enjoy without having to think too much into the story line. Blue Risho is very talented to be able to come up with the concept at age 9 and I can't wait to see what else their imagination comes up with!
The story is packed with pretty much all mythical and magical creatures you can think of from dragons and a phoenix to fairies and imps all combined with 3 children with magical powers. A perfect combination for magical adventure.

The beginning feels a little disjointed and a bit odd that the main girl’s parents just let her go off alone and she’s like 12. So that’s a bit strange.
I’d say once the story gets going it flows a lot better. Definitely more geared for kids who like Lord of the Rings vibes.

The reading age for this is suggested at approximately 10-18yrs
This is a well written coming of age fantasy story that is rich in magic, glorious magical creatures and story. In Amber we have a main character who despite the setting I think is highly relatable to those younger readers reading it. She is such a wonderful character you cannot help but route for her and eagerly turn the pages to see where the story takes both Amber and you the reader.
This was an absolute delight to read and I have no doubt it will charm everyone that reads.
This book 1 has set up ready for a new series that is a wonderful world for what will be an exciting coming of age story full of magic and mayhem.
