Get Your Rocks Off #2

Riding for a Fall

Rate this book
Freed from her neurological condition and the suffocating attention of her parents, Kira is a whole new woman, literally. And now she’s on tour with her favourite band, travelling across foreign countries and recording what she sees with the gorgeous Marlow by her side. So, it all should be smooth sailing, right?

Instead she’s thrust into a complex political world where everything is about power and a misstep could be your last. Kira’s no closer to discovering what the mysterious Aen is, or why he’s so interested in her. The tawny Johnno brings with him his own baggage: his band, with every single one of them focussed on one thing: her. She’s gone from fragile human to resilient, somehow powerful fae, but why does everyone want a bite?

So, who does she let close?

Join Kira as she navigates this brand new world and in the process of discovering the fae world and how it works, discovers a whole lot more than she bargained for about herself.

This is book two in a brand new steamy reverse harem series from the author of the Pack Heat series. If you love hot, why choose romance with sexy fae men and a bit of MM, you’ll love Riding for a Fall.

Sam, woman, what the hell are you doing to me?!?! This book couldn’t be more aptly named. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this series is sexy, eerily alluring and filled with a magic I’m still trying to comprehend. Ms. Hall has created characters and a world full of depth and deception. I don’t know what’s real and what’s not anymore. Here I was, riding the high with Kira throughout the entire book only to fall when I least expected it. I NEED to know what the hell is really going on. I NEED for all of this to be illusions layered upon illusions because if it isn’t, I don’t know how these delicious characters will ever redeem themselves. I’ll be not so patiently waiting fo the next book, even though I’m expecting to be torn down yet again at some point. Oh but the rebuilding is ALWAYS worth it.

GAHHHH!! This book had me all over the place. This is DEFINITELY NSFW! If you have never had hot flashes before you will once you read this book. It is very steamy, emotional roller coaster, and still a mystery. So you know Kira is on the tour with The Changlings as well as her friend. However, we see a different side of her friend. Kira needs to keep her wits about her but is easily sidetracked. She knows that she is missing something and is trying to find out the truth. No one is giving her any real answers and that is just crazy. So what will happen? Will she find out who to trust? Everything is just crazy but that ending, Oh Snap everything is about to change!! I cannot wait to see what she will do in the next book.

Riding for a Fall takes us right into the action where we left off at the end of Away with the Faeries. We don't miss out on any real time, so that's a nice benefit because sometimes I feel like there are time jumps in the beginning of a series when we really need those extra pages with the characters to help us get to know them and bring them to life.

In this installment, we're seeing Kira go on tour with The Changelings and the rest of her entourage- Marlow, Aen, Vervain, Jen, etc, so we're thrown right into the debauchery that is the standard MO of the Hartley clan. Although Marlow and Aen have some nice moments and are still a steady as they can be presence in Kira's life, this book is really digging into her developing relationships with The Changelings. And, I'll just say, some of the "bonding" scenes are definitely fiery. Thirsty ladies will definitely be pleased.

Kira's in this transitional place where she has to figure out who she is, what she's capable of, and who it's safe to connect with. And man, there's just SO much for her to handle. Book two is this place where we are seeing unsteadiness, definite drama, and personal crises. For as much sh*t as she's dealing with, I think that she keeps a pretty good head on her shoulders. She's slowly growing into a power position where she can really be the one taking charge of her decisions rather than doing triage on the damage that's caused by choosing the best path out of the choices that you're being boxed into.
I'm really interested to see some big growth and girl power coming her way in book three.

With the guys, we get to dig a little deeper into each of the band members. Who they are, what makes them tick, what role they play in the quintet of their band. I think so far, Billy and Jake are my favorites. They're just two that I feel myself drawn to, but Hall does a good job of getting you a little bit deeper into how each of the men work, so you actually get to/have to make a choice. This isn't one of these situations where there's a clear favorite, and you know who the author loves best, which for me, is a total win. I love it when each guy has a fair chance.

As far as the plot and world-building goes, we're progressing nicely for each. I think there was a firmer basis in world-building in this installment, which was nice because I really appreciate fantasy situations where I have a good grasp of what's going on. Don't get me wrong- there are plenty of open paths for the story to take and SO MUCH that we don't know, but we're starting to get a good grasp on what Kira needs to know, and it's helpful.

Fair warning to readers, there IS a kind of cliffhanger at the end. There's a bit of a tricky situation, and Kira (and readers) are put in this place where they have to figure out what the heck is going on. Because the answer to that question is likely going to change everything for our leading lady. As far as cliffhangers go, it's not like we're sitting and waiting to know whether or not someone has died. It's more that there's a big dramatic situation, and we're going to have to wait to see how it all shakes out. Now I personally think there are tricks in store and not everything is as Kira thinks it is, but I guess we'll see when Sam Hall finishes reenacting an evil villain laugh gif.

I beta read this book in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely adore Sam’s books, but this may be one of my favorites. This book is Nirvana, excess, debauchery, and an emotional roller coaster all-in-one. I loved Kira’s growth in this book and how she navigates this whole new world emotionally. It feels natural and you’ll end up cheering for her every time she stands a little straighter, gets a little more backbone, and realizes her own worth.

Now let’s talk about the steam. Oh, mylanta the steam. The guys are so alpha and so damaged, yet everything you’d possibly desire - no matter your palette. She has very different relationships and interactions with each.

This book is all about tearing down masks to see the nitty gritty beneath. I’m not going to lie, the ending will more than likely piss you off, but I promise it’ll be so very worth it. ❤️

Well, that was a hell of a ride!

A bit like the first one, I'm not sure how I feel about this.

I think if I hadn't known some totally fuckery was coming right at the end I'd have been more pissed than I was.

Let's just say that by the end of this one Kira is at absolutely rock bottom, and it's hard to see.

I have to give it to the author though, I don't know who the hell to trust or what to think about anything! I can't believe the n3tx book isn't out yet!

This series pc tones to completely ridiculous and over the top, think Stunich's Groupie but with the Fae, in fact, if you crossed her Allison in Underland series with Groupie then you'd get something with a similar vibe.

It is a gratuitous, over the top, sensuous book and I guess I link it to the series above because I have the same sense of vague ickiness that I liked this as much as I did!

This was everything and more. Kira has grown a lot as a character in this book from the self conscious human to a strong powerhouse fae still starting to find her footing in court. You get more of the Changelings, Marlow, and Ane. The is more hot interactions amongst the guys and so yes there is m/m featured in this book on more then one occasion. The sex scenes with Kira were steamy. Warning this book has a couple of scenes that will make you want to throw it on multiple occasions This book leaves you hanging by your finger tips kinda cliffhanger. I’m ready to come back for more, can’t wait for book 3 Star On The Rise.

I debated whether or not to wait to write this as I just finished reading the ARC copy I received but I didn't want to forget all of the things that have me twisted up. I'm all a-flutter and irritated and excited and pissed and turned on and happy and grrrr. As per the first book there are twists and turns that are unexpected, there is amazing chemistry and gut-wrenching honesty, and there is devastation. Read it... then read it again to make sure you didn't miss anything. I'm going to....once I've forgiven Sam.

I needed this book in my life so bad, even with an epic cliffhanger (it'll be worth it). Kira is a character I can easily root for. She is dealing with so many new things and trying to navigate this world she was thrust into. This entire book was intense with feeling. I was left feeling rather bereft and hoping that book 3 will flow quickly out of Sam Hall's mind. I'm completely emotionally invested and I can't wait for more!

This book was intense. So much happened and didn’t stop happening. Wow is all I can say. So Kiera’s character grows fast in this book. She’s thrown the the wolves essentially and the fact that she rolls with everything thrown at her rather than crumble, speaks volumes for the strong character that she is. The ending destroyed me. I think I cursed the author several times. But I get it. It has to happen blah blah blah doesn’t mean I have to like it. Aen is my favorite character. I’m excited to see what happens next.

I can not believe what I just read. I am so completely shredded over this book. I know Sam Hall is a genius so I have complete trust that I will be put back together again. I just do not think I will get over it anytime soon. Aren’t those books your favorite? These characters are such a mix of everything you dream you want in an RH and then you are slammed with truths that well... I don’t know how to deal with right now. I am currently begging for the next one as soon as possible.

Say What?

Oh. No. The. Hell. She. Didn't! I am seriously having a WTF just happened moment here and it is freakin' awesome! Blown away? Hell Yeah! Shocked? Most definitely. I'm cutting this review short, not because I couldn't go on and on with adjectives, but because I need to go ba#!s deep in the next book in the series. Sooner rather than later.

So many questions answered and backgrounds revealed but even more mysteries to solve. This book picked up right where book one left off and kept you interested entire time. You were able to connect more with the characters and it was so hard to pick a favorite. The last few chapters were a whirlwind and the conclusion left you wanting even more. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

The emotional damage and pain one person can handle/cope through their life is never limited to one moment. Kira has survived through soo much and yet has so much more to go through. Where she will go, what will she do next after finding out the truth? Sam has left us with many questions but she did an amazing job with the plot and the growth of her characters.

Kindle. 3.3. I just don’t feel like it worked it was all over the place plot wise. The writing was choppy to read with too much going on with no direction or consistency. Characters all remained very surface no real development individual or relationship. Drawn out with World building being so poor especially for such an in depth world that was new to FMC.
Dynamic of guys just didn’t work for me. Marlowe physical description wasn’t clear (I couldn’t stop imagining an older scrawny short guy from what was given) not really fitting into that fantasy like the rest kinda ruined it for me.
*stopped and read another series in between this book

Honestly.... I really thought that I would like this series. It has great sex scenes. It has awesome characters. But the plot and the writing for the plot just aren't my cup of tea. I'm really dissapointed and I'm sorry for those who do like it and hate my review of this series. I am not even going to read book 5 when it comes out. I plan on forgetting about this series. I really wish something was different so I can like it better. I really wish.

Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.

Really what can I say, saying that this book was fantastic seems to be simplifying my feelings for this book. The characters are very interesting, the world is decadent and magical, the story compelling and something totally new to me and I loved every single second of it.

Kira is a character that I can really connect to, I feel totally invested in her as the main character. I sympathize with her, I want the best for her and I am most definitely rooting for her to be everything she can be. Being dropped into a new world and trying to figure things out with the help of strangers and not totally collapse into oneself takes a lot of courage and strength. Kira is a complex character, up until a few days ago she was human and now she's fae but she still has her humanity and it's playing into her character. While her fae self is getting caught up in this new world she still has her human brain with anxiety, questions, and warnings but she ignores them, which most humans do in order to indulge as the fae do. I am really curious to see what happens when she finally settles into who she is.

This is a reverse harem which means love interests, I am not gonna say too much about the guys because I standing on the edge of a cliff with them and I have no idea which way the wind will blow. I am just gonna say that I have love Aen from the beginning of this series, he had this pull on me and it just keeps getting better.

In Riding for a Fall I'm getting more of the fae world that I'm used to, the magic, the beautiful and grotesque, the mind games and power plays, the decadence, and beautiful fashion. I enjoyed all of that but also the cinematic aspect with Kira photography and Kira's interpretation of music, all of it added to the lushness of the story, the complexity of it. Plus the shocking plot twist that leads to a killer cliffhanger at the end just about destroyed me but made for a very compelling story. I need the next book, Star on the Rise, like I need air. Sam is a wonderful storyteller, I am hooked and ready for the next part of Kira's adventure.

After suffering debilitating head aches her entire life – and never really living much of a life – Kira has finally transitioned into something more, something better. But even as she gets used to her new body, her newish face and hair things are not all sunshine and roses. Suddenly thrust into a world of back stabbing, bickering and a whole lot of people that she isn’t sure if she can trust.

Surrounded by these amazing looking men each one of them slowly worm their way into her heart (against her wishes in some cases). Can Kira really afford to trust The Changelings, Marlo and Aen with her heart? Does Jen really have her best interest at heart? Only time will tell.

Really really great read. Kira really starts to bloom *snicker* in this book. The mousy photographer is long gone. Which is a really good thing as she is thrust head first into this crazy world of music tours and magic and crazy fae courts. Sam Hall gives you a taste of some mild BDSM, some gender fluidity and a lovely taste of MM.

Added to that we get to know our lovely boys a little better. I really fell in love with Jake in this one. He seems like this lost little puppy that cannot find his own way (hence the collar and leash). I have always been a fan of these types of characters and I really hope that things in book 3 and 4 go better so we can carry on loving his adorableness.

I am not quite sure how to feel about Billy and Lucas. If you have read the book then you know what I mean.

The world building is insane. Sam has this crazy ability to tell a story and describe a setting / scene in such a way that I feel that I am the FMC or in the very least a spectator in the room with the characters. I am always able to see everything written in technicolor vividness.

As always with Sam Hall’s books this one ends on a killer cliff hanger – thank fully I have the third book queued up and ready to go.

Woah this book was intense but satisfying. The thing that I've enjoyed most about this book is the change in Kira. With Jen as her only friend and her life dictated by her "illness", Kira was often avoided, ignored, or forgotten about. Years of being along the sidelines has made here quite observant. Even in this brand new environment, she continues to be perceptive about the needs of others and is willing to be the thing they need. But, the brilliant thing about the quiet, invisible people is that they are the ones you need to look out for. They are the ones that see and hear the most. I know that most may not see Kira as a threat. Yet. But I think that this invisibleness of hers, even though she has changed a great deal after the transition, will work to her advantage. It's always the quiet ones you have to look out for. Maybe she can use some of her past habits to her benefit in the next book. Because the title says it all. I fell so hard at the end of this book. Sam wrote one of those amazing fury inducing cliffhangers that make you want to curl up in a ball and boycott books for a little while you let your brain process it all. Don't worry. I'm ok, and you will be too. This series is worth the whole emotional rollercoaster. I'm going back to ride again. Got my wristband to skip the line and everything. I'm extremely excited to see what Sam comes up with in the next book and can't wait to see how Kira changes ever more. It was great to see the emotional and physical connections between her and The Changelings in this book. I just hope that there is more to them than what we were left with.

This is a steamy paranormal reverse harem romance with a unique twist and plenty of hot men and games being played.
.
Wowsers! So much happening in this book I need a minute to process. I gotta hand it to Sam for bringing something new to paranormal romance. I though I had read it all but this gem proves otherwise. A unique take on characters and species I was intrigued when she described what and where she got her inspiration. I’m constantly surprised by what comes out and that extra something and draws you into her books.
.
But. And it’s a pet peeve of mine. I’m sorry but I absolutely hate when characters are wishy washy as much as Kira is in this book. It really does my head in. The all in, only to back out hot and cold act I cannot for the life of me stand. But, with everything else going on in the book I’m able to get through it. But dear lord please tell me that ends with this book. Please. I’m sorry I enjoyed this book and the unique twists and surprises fascinate and keep me interested but I’d love for the hot cold to end so I can fully enjoy it.
.
Other than that the book is great. Characters are well written, unique in their own ways and very distinctive. The world building is awesome and you truly get a sense of what Sam is trying to accomplish. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for the next book. I’m looking forward to more surprises, revelations and for Kira to really come in to her own.

4 There Was No Escaping The Pain Stars

Riding for a Fall is the second installment in the Get Your Rocks Off series by Sam Hall.

I honestly don’t understand what happened half the time. There’s this deliciously confusing disconnect present near constantly, that never allows the story to fully adhere to the rote and banal scripted arcs so often crafted. I adore what Hall is going for here. It’s pushing a lot of boundaries. Not just in the overtly and openly sexual, comfort zone obliterating overtures. But in the way the author has pushed the story along. Which vaguely resembles the same cliches seen in this genre, but with plentiful twists.

I’m of course upset over the ending. And that it feels like a somewhat forced twist to propel the MC into her own. Which the author basically admits to in the afterword. But lore so because it catapults all the assumptions and facts we’ve accumulated in these first two books out from under us. Left with only aggravating questions and further frustration that we still don’t understand the characters and their bonds, or evidently where they’ll take us on this journey.

I’m hoping to get me much awaited Aen dosing. Because he’s been seriously, and unwontedly, absent for much of Kira’s transition. It’s maddening. Book three better heap some Aen into my life or I might revolt.

Very spicy

There was a whole lot of steam in that book. The plot was a little thin and it mostly focused on character development and exploring physical relationships with the members of the group.

The writing was well done but I did notice some repetitive words and phrases. I noticed that a bit in book 1 also but figured it might be worth mentioning.

There were some social views that were included that seemed out of place in a fantasy setting. It wasn't that bad but it didn't seem to fit in this fantasy world.

There was also some BDSM stuff that felt shoehorned in. I don't think it was necessary and I don't think it fit that well. It seemed like it was included because someone thought it would sound cool. I dont mind BDSM in books but I really don't know why it was included here. I can say the bits that were sprinkled throughout did seem to be reasonably accurate from my limited understanding. So, I do applaud the author for doing some research before including it. It still seemed weird though. Maybe the significance of it being used will show up in the next book? Or maybe it was just included for funsies? I dunno.

Back on track. This book is heavy on steam, light on plot. Still a pretty good read. I didn't like it as much as the first but it was still worth the read for me.

This series continues to be EVERYTHING I wanted but didn’t know I needed. Kira has been transformed, but embracing this newness is not coming naturally as one would expect since she wasn’t raised Fae. She’s an Alice in Wonderland type of awe struck trying to find her way among the glitz and glamour that is The Changelings’ your and Hartley’s’ Court. Often she’s stuck between two choices feeling less than confident that either is the right choice for her because she’s still torn between who she was raised to be and who she has become. Neither feels like it fits quite right. Yet she tries to forge ahead, she tries to embrace everything and live in the moment. There are moments that transcend everything the genre represents. One moment and arc that stands out is what plays out between Kira and Jake. When you get there, you’ll know. You’ll question what it means to take responsibility for a lover, what your duties are to care for them and all that entails when they put their faith and trust in you. It’s so beautifully done. It’s unrushed, it’s thoughtful. It’s perfect. Then, Sam has to throw us over the edge with that cliffhanger, but I’m confident there is more here than meets the eye. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Sensual. There’s no other word to really describe the feeling of this book. Sam Hall has captured the emotion of sex and pleasure so perfectly that it is exuded from every page. And it’s more than just about sex because it’s about a woman coming into her own, being reborn, finding herself and being comfortable with her body and mind and power. And boy does Kira struggle with this journey!

One of the things I truly appreciated about this story and how it’s being told is that we get to experience how lost and confused Kira is in this new Fae world she finds herself in. She’s unsure of how things work, what the rules are, what’s happening around her, and even what’s happening with her body. It creates this sense of uncertainty that gets transmitted to the reader. I could feel her excitement, nervousness, anxiousness, desire and pain.

And then there’s the underlying feeling of lust and want and need that permeates throughout the story. The way Kira’s energy manifests. It’s a buzz that’s created that I could feel humming over my skin as I read...like a physical manifestation of this story. It’s a heady, intoxicating sort of feeling that stayed with me throughout the entire book. And the guys are just perfection! Until they aren’t.

Sam Hall has crafted one hell of a world here. Once I lost myself to the story and the feelings it generated in me, I was unable to put it down.

Oh...what a ride! Leave your human inhibitions at the door. It was like the most decadent, debauched version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream...all sexy and magical. And steady your heart for the heartbreaking revelations and one hell of a cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the next book!

Ten Stars!!!!

Absolutely the best series I’ve ever read! I don’t know where this author has been hiding from me, but I will read everything she has ever written and will ever write as soon as I can. Kira is such a perfectly written FMC. Starting out limited( I won’t say weak because she never seems that way) and getting stronger every page. There is just enough introspection to allow you to understand her journey, but not so much that it becomes a page filler that is tedious and whiny. I can’t really comment on the male characters yet because of the way the second book was left. (You’ll see!) These are not sweet nice fairies, people; they are vicious and cruel. Loved the storyline, haven’t read anything like it before and that’s saying a lot. Especially when everything seems to be along the same lines these days. If you like like a little dark and sexy, aren’t scared to hate your MCs then is the book for you. Honestly it’s the book of the year for me!!!!

Riding for a Fall

This series is a lot different than anything I've read before. I can't really put my finger on it, or describe why it feels that way, but I can assure you that it does intrigue me in the best way possible.

The author built a quite complex world in this series, a world the FMC just discovered and has to learn how to navigate. Not an easy task when the power of  Kira seems to attract a lot of attention of people who want to take advantage of her and the strong magic she holds.

As a reader, I felt like I was looking through Kira's eyes, trying to figure out what the best course of action is, who to trust or avoid,...

There's more character and relationship building in this book as well as mystery, betrayal, steam and so so much more. I'm definitely game for whatever the author has in store for these characters next.

This book is just as good if not better than the first book was! I am so happy I got to read this book and find out more about these characters and this world although that ending is a serious cliffhanger! Like it made me want to scream and rip my hair out from the insanity of that ending. I loved all the world building going on since it makes me feel as if I could step into this world. Kira is growing and developing so much in this book! And she definitely gets to have quite a bit of fun in this book along with some other things. The others characters are also getting fleshed out a lot and I want to learn as much about them as I can. This one answered some questions and yet raised so many more new ones. I seriously need the next book to come out. Sam Hall is an amazing author and this book does not disappoint in the slightest.

There’s finally a heroine in RH that’s refreshing . She’s not like take pity on me . Like a bunch of RH heroines or acts very naive . We’re everyone wants to keep her child like mind pure but have a lot of s&x.
I can’t wait for book 3 .
Thank you Sam hall for giving us a heroine that is ready to come in her own and not act like a childlike through the series !
( RANT: I really am tired of naive heroines that’s are all child like innocent or the sexually abuse ones that have so much s$x you question is that normal behavior?? )

I feel like Kira is more relatable because she had a medicated life and controlling people in her life . She cried at the end because of the lies but she’s ready to go back on track and I like that . No drama running back to men like why don’t you love me ?

So again thank you Sam hall it’s been a long time since I have 5 stars to a RH
