Makli by Nazia Kamran Kashif is an Urdu novel that belongs to the genre of horror, mystery, and fantasy (I believe) as it involves a lot of supernatural elements and paranormal activities. The story is mainly set in Kirthar, a mountainous range in the province of Sindh, in Pakistan. However, it also takes the readers to Makli, a 400 years old graveyard that is also a tourist attraction in the Sindh province of Pakistan. The book revolves around a bunch of characters from different countries. The first character that is introduced to the readers in this book is the character of Ahmed who is a high-ranking police officer living with his wife and is posted to Kirthar in order to investigate the mysterious deaths of the local people who are being attacked in a gruesomely violent manner by some unknown creature or animal while their dead bodies are being found in mutilated condition in Kirthar Park. The second character introduced in the story is Will, a British national and a painter who lives in London and has his father and best friend Mark as his only closest companions. All his life, he has been haunted by nightmares in which a woman appears with her face half covered in a black shawl while he gets attacked by frightening monstrous creatures in a place completely unknown to him. His canvases are filled with paintings of that mysterious place but one day when he attempts to paint the picture of the woman, who appears in his dreams, he starts seeing and hearing strange things and voices. When things start getting worse and his father gets attacked by a monstrous being, Will resolves to go to Pakistan to unlock the mystery attached to his dreams. The next important character is Aharoon, an Italian national living in Egypt where he is an archeologist and teacher at the University of Egypt. He along with his friend Akil is searching for some ancient treasure in the graves of Egypt and one day he finds a clue in the form of a ring with a map in it while shopping in a local shop in Egypt. Since that day, Aharoon starts having nightmares and is attacked by a scary-looking monster who calls himself Asmar Aout/ Awat (I don’t know the exact pronunciation). To end it all, he decides to go to Pakistan where he believes he can find the answers to these strange happenings. Another main character of the story is Daniel who lives in Africa and is a brave and fierce lion hunter. He works at an organization called “Lion Hunters” that hunts lions for a living. Daniel has hunted countless lions in the forest of Congo where he resides, however, one night when he is on the hunting spree he sees a girl with her face half-covered with a black shawl and is attacked by a monstrous creature. From there on he too starts experiencing supernatural stuff that starts disturbing him. Soon his organization is contacted by the Pakistani government who needs their help to get rid of a wild ferocious lion that is attacking and jeopardizing the lives of their local people. The only way for all these characters to find answers to the mysterious things happening to them is to go to Pakistan where the Makli graveyard holds the key to their unanswered questions.

I must say that I truly loved and enjoyed reading this book. I haven’t read an Urdu book for ages and reading Makli was an awesome experience. In fact, reading this book only made me realize how much I’ve missed reading Urdu books all this time. I came to know about this book through a book reading group on Facebook while I was surfing it to find suggestions for good horror novels. The moment I got to know about this writer and this novel, I decided that I will get my hands on it as soon as I can and I am glad I received a signed copy of the book.

I must appreciate the writer for building the story so beautifully. Although, the story was meant to be a horror one, however, after years of watching horror movies and shows, I feel horror has stopped affecting me. Except for a few occasions in the story, I was not scared while reading it; nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the unfolding of the mystery. The ghol and Asmar Aout/ Awat (whatever the name is :p) may have been painted to evoke fear among the readers but the description did not scare me. Yet, I loved Kashif’s writing style which kept me hooked to the book from the beginning till the very end. The blend of mystery with archeology was very interesting. I had no idea about the existence of Makli graveyard before reading this novel. That’s quite shameful because I am originally from Sindh. Also, I appreciate Kashif for creating a positive image of Pakistan in her books though at some points it seemed a little exaggerated. However, I believe a little exaggeration does not hurt anyone. I wish this book is translated into English because I have a feeling that not only Pakistanis but people from other nationalities can also enjoy this book. The only thing I would request Kashif to focus her attention on is to contact her editor regarding a few minor mistakes. For example, George’s name was misprinted as James' multiple times which got a little confusing. Also, I found a couple of spelling mistakes. Apart from that, this book deserves a five-star, yet I am giving it a four-star rating to keep it fair. Thank you, Nazia Kamran Kashif for writing this awesome piece. It is a must-read novel and highly recommended from my side.

Writer ka mai ne yh pehla novel parha hai to mai bht zayda confuse thi ke parhon ya nai. Ya shayad mjhe laga tha ke mjhe pasand nai aye ga phr aise hi parhna shuru kiya to aik hi din mai half parh liya
Novel ki kahani mujhe buhat achi thi.

Horror-fantasy type trope hai iska. But it didn't scare me Han fantasy bht Zayda thi. Mai ne urdu mai is trhan ka pehly kch parha nai hai to kafi acha experience rha hai isko parnhy ka.

Writer ka writing style simple lkn acha tha is liye mai ne jaldi khatam kar liya.
Lekin, ending thodi disappointing lagi. Isko rush aur haphazard dekhaya gya tha. Agar ending mai kch twist and turns hoty to achi bat thi.

I am in a readers gr and came to know thru the members that this book is extremely good.
So I ordered it from the writer. First of all I was excited to receive a signed copy. But ......
Omg.... what an amazing journey from egypt to makli.
I am not going to give any spoiler in the review but this book deserves 5 star. A definite page Turner. The writer has complete grip on the plot. And engage the reader in every line and every page. I wish it is translated in English too 👏👏

Awed! Inspired! Exhilarated! Thrilled! Excited! Impressed!

Nothing short of a truly wonderful and entertaining masterpiece. Filled with suspense, thrill, horror, fantasy, nostalgia and everything that you couldn't expect.

Nazia Kamran Kashif has created a web which seems complicated at first, yet interesting enough to keep you in its bewitching charm and the way it reveals itself and how everything finally connects and fits together is an art only few can master.

Looking forward to reading your next masterpieces.

Do give it a read people and be surprised at the skills with which it's written because it's only her second Novel after #Dillagi which was also a hit. Her matured writing style, grip on the plot, maintaining the suspense and knowing when to reveal which part of the puzzle is what makes her a great writer. You can't really miss the flow and naturally written dialogues too.

I would give it a 10/10 but as I know her, I know that she keeps outdoing herself every single day so I'd better be on the safe side and give it an 8/10 rating.

مصنفہ کا تعارف: نازیہ کامران کاشف ایک انٹرپرینیر کے ساتھ ساتھ ایک منجھی ہوئی لکھاری ہیں۔ دل لگی کے بعد مکلی ان کا دوسرا پبلشڈ ناول ہے۔ اور یہ کہنا غلط نہیں ہو گا کہ نازیہ نے بہت جلد اپنے قلم کی پختگی سے خود کو منوا لیا ہے۔ انہوں نے جہاں دل لگی کے زریعے سب کے دلوں میں جگہ بنائی تھی وہیں مکلی لکھ کر یہ ثابت کردیا کہ وہ ایک اعلیٰ پائے کی لکھاری ہیں۔ سسپنس تھرلر یا ہارر کی بات کی جائے تو میں اس صنف کی جتنی مداح ہوں اتنی ہی بڑی نقاد بھی ہوں۔ مگر نازیہ نے مجھے اپنے آگے سر نگوں کرنے پرمجبور کر دیا۔ مکلی ایک ایسا شاہکار ہے کہ جب آپ اسکو پڑھنے بیٹھیں گے تو ختم کئے بنا نہیں اٹھیں گے۔
نازیہ کی سب سے خوبصورت بات یہ ہے کہ وہ منفرد لکھتی ہیں، اور ہر موضوع کو پوری تحقیق کے بعد قلمبند کرتی ہیں۔ ان کی تحاریر فالتو طوالت سے مبرّا اور آخری وقت تک قاری کو خود سے باندھ کر رکھنے کی خاصیت لئے ہوئے ہوتی ہیں۔

مکلی تعارف:

مکلی ایک ایسی کہانی ہے جس پر تبصرہ کرنے کے لیے بہت ہمت درکار تھی۔ میں جب بھی اس کے بارے میں لکھنے بیٹھی بس یہی محسوس کیا کہ نہیں لکھ پاؤں گی کیونکہ یہ وہ شاہکار ہے جس کا حق الفاظ میں ادا نہیں کیا جا سکتا۔
مکلی کا پلاٹ کیا ہے اور اس کے کردار کون ہیں اس کی تفصیلات میں نہیں جاؤں گی کیونکہ یہ آپ خود پڑھ کر تلاش کریں۔ بس کچھ باتیں کہنا چاہوں گی۔

سب سے پہلے تو مکلی کا سر ورق اسقدر خوبصورت ہے کہ آپ اسکو دیکھتے رہیں آپ کا دل نہیں بھرتا۔ رنگوں کا ایسا امتزاج جو کہانی کی پراسراریت کو عیاں کرتا ہے اور پھر اس پر مکلی اور دیگر کرداروں کی شبیہ اور احرام ِ مصر اور مکلی قبرستان کا جھلک کہانی کیطرف کھنچے چلے آنے پر مجبور کرتی ہے۔

پلاٹ:
مکلی کا پلاٹ بہت منفرد ہے۔ جسطرح کہانی مختلف کرداروں کے ساتھ مختلف مقامات پر شروع ہوتی ہے اور پھر سب کو ایک مقام پر لاکر جوڑتی ہے اور ساتھ ساتھ وقت کے پار بھی سفر کرتی ہے۔ نازیہ نے یہ سب بہت مہارت اور پختگی کے ساتھ ترتیب دیا ہے۔ یہ ایک بہت مختلف اور مشکل پلاٹ ہے جسکو بہت سہل انداز میں لکھا گیا ہے۔

کردار نگاری:

مکلی عام ناولوں کی طرح ایک ہیرو یا ہیروئن کی کہانی نہیں بلکہ اس کا ہر کردار اپنے آپ میں ایک ہیرو ہے۔ مصنفہ نے ہر کردار کو اسقدر مہارت اور خوبصورتی سے پیش کیا ہے نا کہیں کم نہ زیادہ۔ہر کردار کا خاکہ اتنا بہترین ہے کہ آپ تخیل کی آنکھ سے اسکو محسوس کر سکتے ہیں۔

منظر نگاری:

منظر نگاری کے بارے میں تو جو بھی کہا جائے کم ہے۔ یہ نازیہ کی خاصیت ہے کہ وہ جو بھی لکھتی ہیں ایسا لکھتی ہیں کہ قاری اسکو دیکھنے اور سوچنے پر مجبور ہو جاتا ہے۔ وہ اپنے قلم سے آپکو اسی منظر میں پہنچا دیتی ہیں جہاں ان کے کردار موجود ہوں۔ مکلی کو پڑھتے ہوئے بھی ایسا ہی ہوا۔ میں نے کبھی خود کو کیرتھر کی پہاڑیوں کے بیچ موجود پایا تو کبھی مصر کے اہراموں میں، کبھی مکلی کے قبرستان میں تو کبھی کونگو کے جنگلات میں۔ اور پھر وقت کے ساتھ سفر کرتے کبھی اسمرعوت کے دربار میں تو کبھی مکلی کے محل میں خود کو محسوس کیا۔ غرض یہ کے کتاب کے آخری پنے تک ایک ایک لمحہ کو اپنی آنکھوں کے سامنے کسی فلم کی طرح چلتے ہوئے دیکھا۔

خلاصہ:

غرض مکلی وہ سفر ہے جو محظ چند ممالک پر ہی نہیں بلکہ صدیوں پر محیط ہے۔ جس کے کردار اس دنیا کے ہی نہیں وقت کے بھی مسافر ہیں۔ جن کا تعلق مختلف مذاہب، مختلف زبانوں اور مختلف ثقافتوں سے ہے لیکن وہ سب ایک ہی مقصد کی تکمیل کے لیے ایک جگہ موجود ہیں۔

وہ مقصد جو تاریخ کے پنوں میں مفقود ہے۔ اُن کو تلاش ہے ایک خزانے کی۔ وہ ایک ایسی جنگ لڑنے کے لیے تیار ہیں جس کے انجام سے وہ خود بے خبر ہیں۔ جو لڑائی ہے جاہ و حشمت کی، ضد اور انا کی، طاقت اور غرور کی اور۔۔۔ جو لڑائی ہے حق اور باطل کی۔

تو آپ بھی اس جنگ کا احوال پڑھئے اور مکلی کے کرداروں کے ساتھ ایک ایسے سفر پر روانہ ہو جائیے جس کی واپسی مشروط نہیں۔

شائد یہ کہانی بچوں یا ٹین ایجرز کے لیے لکھی گئی ہے کیونکہ اگر میں نے یہ بچپن یا ٹین ایج میں پڑھی ہوتی تو غالباً کافی پسند آتی لیکن چونکہ اب مجھے عمرو عیار اور ٹارزن والی کہ��نیوں کا لطف اٹھائے زمانہ ہوگیا ہے تو مجبورا کہنا پڑتا ہے کہ تحریر میں گہرائی بالکل نہیں ہے۔کردار سازی انتہائی کمزور ہے۔ ( مجھے کسی ایک کردار سے بھی اپنائیت محسوس نہیں ہوئی) واقعات بے ربط اور غیر منطقی ہیں ... ( یه سارہ اتنے سارے مردوں کے بیچ اکیلی کیا کر رہی ہے؟🤔 اہارون کا سارہ پہ اچانک غصہ کہ ہم کسی کو بھلا کیوں بتائیں کہ یہاں غول نام کے عفریت لوگوں کی تاک میں ہیں ... نہیں ہم اس بات کو راز رکھیں گے 🙊... بہت عقلمندانه بات ... اہارون کو ایسا ظاہر کیا جاتا ہے جیسے اسے ساری بات معلوم ہے جو کسی اور کے علم میں آنا خطرناک ہوگا مگر اسے تو خود بھی کچھ پتہ ہی نہیں ہوتا 🤫... ولیم اور اہارون کے دوستوں کا ذکر ہے بلکہ ان کو ان کے چیلے کہنا چاہیے کہ دوست تو برابری کے ہوتے ہیں جبکہ مارک اور آکل کی تو اپنی کوئی ذاتی زندگی نہیں وہ بس اپنے دوستوں کے پیچھے پیچھے ہی چلتے ہیں 🙄ـ اور یہ سارے مرد بارہا آنسو بہا کر روتے ہوئے بھی دکھائے گئے ہیں... سلیوٹ🫡 مانا کہ تخیلاتی تحریریں منطق کے اصولوں سے بالا ہوتی ہیں مگر ورلڈ بلڈنگ اور کردار سازی مضبوط ہو تو پرلے درجے کی خیالی کہانیاں بھی قابل یقین اور دلچسپ بن سکتی ہیں۔
اور ہاں ملکہ مکلی اور اسمرعوت نامی بلا سے ہمیں ڈرانے کی کوشش کی گئی ہے لیکن چونکہ انکے کرداروں کا کوئی آگا پیچھا نہیں اسلئے کچھ خاص ڈر نہیں لگا ۔🥱

Makli by Nazia Kamran Kashif is an Urdu novel that falls into the genres of horror, fantasy, and mystery. The story follows a group of characters from different countries who are connected by a mysterious force. The novel is set in Kirthar, a mountainous range in the Sindh province of Pakistan, and Makli, a 400-year-old graveyard that is also a tourist attraction.

Unfortunately, this book was a huge disappointment. The plot was unoriginal and the writing was dull and unengaging. The characters were flat and uninteresting, and the dialogue was clunky and awkward. The supernatural elements were over-the-top and unbelievable, and the editing was sloppy and full of mistakes.

The only positive thing I can say about this book is that it does have a positive image of Pakistan, though it does seem a bit exaggerated at times.

Overall, I would not recommend this book. It was a huge letdown and a waste of time.

یہ ایک بکواس وقت اور پیسوں کا ضیاع ہے۔۔۔ شاید میری پسند کا نہیں۔
کہانی کا آغاز ایک دلکش اور گرفت میں لینے والے انداز سے ہوتا ہے جہاں کچھ لوگوں کی لاشیں مل رہی ہیں اور انسپکٹر احمد اس کیس کو دیکھ رہے ہیں، وِل کو کچھ نظارے (ویژنز) آ رہے ہیں۔ یہاں تک سب ٹھیک تھا، لیکن درمیان میں پرانے جنم کی کہانی ڈال دی گئی ہے، اور کبھی بے ہوش ہو کر کبھی زندہ ہونے کا سلسلہ بھی دکھایا گیا ہے۔ایک نہایت طاقتور جانور نما دیوتا کو پیش کیا گیا ہے جو بظاہر بہت طاقتور ہے لیکن انہی کے ہاتھوں مارا جاتا ہے۔ کہانی کی سب سے بڑی خامی یہ ہے کہ کسی بھی کردار کی تعمیر (character building) نہیں کی گئی۔ کسی بھی کردار سے نہ تو آپ جڑ سکتے ہیں اور نہ ہی اس کی سوچ کو سمجھ سکتے ہیں۔ اور سب سے اہم بات یہ ہے کہ دو خواتین کے کردار ڈالے گئے ہیں جن کا ہونا یا نہ ہونا برابر ہے۔
شاید یہ سب میرے taste کا نہیں تھاامید ہے شاید آپ کو پسند آئے۔

A hidden gem of horror, fantasy, and mystery

from the very beginning it had me completely hooked. Except for the first few pages, there wasn’t a single moment when I felt bored. The narrative was so engaging that I ended up finishing the entire book in just one sitting. It’s rare to find a story in urdu that keeps you so immersed throughout, but this one succeeded effortlessly. For anyone who enjoys a mix of the eerie, the imaginative and the mysterious this book is definitely worth reading.

اُردو کا پہلا تھرلر ناول جو مجھے لگتا ہے کہ ایک بہتریں تجربہ رہا، کہانی کا پلاٹ، سسپینس، کردار سب بہتریں تھے۔ منظر عکاسی کے ساتھ ساتھ کہانی کو بیان کرنے کا انداز منفرد تھا۔
