A world-renowned clinician's practical and complete guide to understanding and alleviating neurological pain in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.
Sciatica is the acute or chronic feeling of pain, hot or cold, numbness, weakness, "electric shocks" or strange sensations, starting near your seat and going down your leg. It is a condition for which some 20 million Americans will seek help this year. Usually neurological, sciatica may originate with a herniated disk, spinal stenosis, or piriformis syndrome, and may be caused by a fall, physical overextension, or being cramped in an airplane or car. In Sciatica Solutions , Loren Fishman, MD, a researcher with twenty-five years of experience, offers help. In easy-to-understand terms, he demystifies the relationship between neurological injury and sciatica, explains the most common causes, and leads you to an exact diagnosis. Outlining the range of physical therapy, medicinal, and surgical options, Fishman focuses on a comprehensive guide to behavioral, exercise, and lifestyle adjustments you can make for lasting comfort and cure. 20 illustrations.
I read this book because I wanted to gain some understanding about both the cause and the treatment of back pain. It was very good in providing that information. At times it got a bit encyclopedic. There were a few sections that provided at-home diagnostic and treatment ideas but I would have liked to see the information there presented in more detail.
If you suspect you have sciatica, skip to the exercises at the back. Results were amazing! Then you can comfortably read the beginning to understand the problem! Dr. Fishman's book on treating back pain is another great resource
Lots of information to absorb. Got some good stretching pointers to relieve back pain, and learned more about both the pain I'm experiencing and possible ways to treat/relieve it.
This was an easy-to-read, well-researched and well documented overview of sciatica and the many ways to treat it, written by a doctor who is an expert in the field, particularly in piriformis syndrome. I liked that it the text has a lot of support from medical literature--there's a lengthy bibliography /works cited section.
Would definitely recommend for anyone trying to learn more about options to heal their sciatica.
Extremely accessible and practical, especially when symptoms, diagnoses, and treatment recommendations evolve. Found it easy to navigate and was provided a vocabulary for conversations with various professionals.
This book changed my life. When the doctors can't (or won't) figure out what's wrong with you, sometimes you have to do the research on your own. After years of useless doctor visits and tests and being in horrible pain, I discovered what was wrong with me partially due to this book. I always encourage any reader to study the credentials and authority of the authors or website, particularly when doing medical research. This book was written by a medical doctor with years of experience diagnosing sciatica problems and I highly recommend it to other sciatica sufferers.
I skimmed the last few chapters. It talked about the kinds of exercises you could do, but didn't give any examples. I guess because he wanted his OTHER book to sell (the one that I copied pages of).
