John Templeton Smith served in the RAF and for a few short years was an airline pilot.

He moved into aerospace journalism in his 30's, before having the good fortune in finding that the bestselling thriller writer, Desmond Bagley, lived nearby.

With Bagley's guidance on writing the novel, Smith went on to produce ten novels beginning with Skytrap (written under the name John Smith, and published by WW Norton, NY in 1984).

Smith went on to teach Creative Writing at Oklahoma City University (OCU) during the late 1980's, and it was during this period that he penned the "John Winter Trilogy": 'White Lie', 'Saigon Express', and 'Then a Soldier'.

Which Truth? Now that’s the reality!!

Please, please, please, write more John Paul Winter books. He is so real, he is fascinating, he is my kind of truth. This is one of the most gut wrenching, detailed, honest tales of the personal reality of war. Nothing is ever as simple as portrayed. Smoke & mirrors.. always.

Best of the Series

This was a great read: demolished it in a weekend. Spy-thriller-aviation-geopolitical… a mix of awesome genres. Reading the Winter series in sequence, I felt this context was missing until now. Great story, which stands on its own legs (i.e., one need not read the first two prior to this one). Enjoy.

Thriller indeed

This novel is set mainly in a country I myself have experience of - Northern Ireland. The IRA characterizations are true to life & the execution of Nancy Ryan is exactly what would happen to any one considered a traitor.

I persevered, because I like military themes, but was not sure how I would cope with this subject and scenario. I was a young mother in the South of England [near Guildford] at the time of their cowardly terrorism - their way of rebelling against British rule; still seen as admirable by some. I hated their killing mindset and the slant against British soldiers having to cope with mobs in the streets. Car bombs, hotel bombs, pub bombings, teaching hate to their children - disgusting behaviour and NOT war, just thuggish rebellion, and the usual accepted bigotry against the English. Plus of course they added to their unbiblical attitudes by engendering a ridiculous 'church' war, within all that violence.
And they still love to think of themselves as the main victims ... but that's what rioters always do. They fill the streets with their hooliganism and then don't like it when law-enforcers do what it takes to subdue them.
And predictably, the author wants to put the onus on the British government.

Did not follow through with the story lines in book2 and book 1. This should have been book 1 .
