Even If - A Study of Habakkuk is an in-depth 3 week study that goes verse by verse through the book of Habakkuk. How do we praise the Lord and trust Him even when life is hard? What does it mean to trust God when life does not go as planned? This study on the book of Habakkuk seeks to answer these questions. We will learn how to pray when we don't know what to pray, and how to trust when things just don't make sense. We will learn how to rest in God when the anxieties of life threaten to steal our joy. We will learn that God is good and faithful, even if.⠀
This book is perfect for individuals or groups.
The book contains the daily study material as well as study suggestions and extra features, like word studies and charts, to help you dig deeper.
Each week contains 5 days of study material, including daily study questions. Each week also has a memory verse day and a weekly reflection day to help dig deeper into Scripture.
DNF at about 50%- this is not a resource I would recommend (and would not recommend The Daily Grace Company by extension) for the following reasons:
-There are no references or citations for any of the historical or cultural background information provided. There is clearly a source for this information, so failure to provide this is plagiarism. -There is zero information provided about the author within this study. There should be a blurb somewhere with her qualifications and role, not simply the addition of her instagram username- Google should never have to be consulted to determine the author of a Bible study resource. -The questions are very surface level and repetitive. -Cross-references are paraphrased rather than having the verses actually included within this text -This is style over substance. Aesthetically curated photographs that have zero relevance to the Book of Habakkuk are simply filler. This entire study is stylized as a magazine, complete with glossy paper throughout. This also adds nothing, and makes writing responses difficult.
We should be demanding far more from our Bible study resources.
The source material is obviously excellent (☺️) but this Bible study is one of the poorest I’ve ever encountered.
The writing and insights are rather lengthy without substance, very shallow and when they do delve into deeper waters, they’re completely unsourced so I cannot verify translation claims and such.
It didn’t occur to me at my age, but I had a sweet older lady at church mention to me she could scarcely read the text because it was small and in a light font in places, which is something to keep in mind when you’re choosing an accessible Bible study for a whole congregation.
The paper is obnoxiously glossy, two different styles of pens I’ve tried are a pain to write with, and the introduction even goes so far as to say not to use a gel pen (rather than go to the trouble to spell out which type of pen to use, just choose quality and comfortable paper).
All in all, I get the impression this is a Bible study for aesthetics, not for serious study. This is milk, not meat.
Wow. I read a “day” a week so the study stretched out over several months. The book did a great job pulling apart every single verse and always pointing back to Jesus. I learned some very deep lessons from this book and would definitely recommend it as a way to dive into the minor prophets! The questions weren’t always the most thoughtful and got a bit repetitive but the theme of the Habakkuk was driven home well.
“Instead of being angry that things were going the way he wanted, Habakkuk had learned to walk by faith and not by sight. And the book of Habakkuk reminds us to do the same. It calls us to stop saying, ‘What if?’ and start saying, ‘Even if.’ Even if the worst possible thing happens in our lives, we have the Lord and in Him we have all that we need. This is the hope of Habakkuk.”
Habakkuk is a short, oft-forgotten book in the Old Testament, save for the final few verses:
“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.” (3:17-18)
I appreciated this study that brought context to the book and the entirety of what the prophet Habakkuk faced.
Similar to Job, Habakkuk questions why God allows evil and suffering, why he doesn’t enact justice. He is trying to reconcile what he sees and feels with what he knows to be true about God. Can we still trust Him?
The Northern tribes of Israel have already fallen to Assyria a century prior, and now God is telling Habakkuk that the Southern tribes would be invaded by Babylon because the people were turning away from God.
But I love how God responds to Habakkuk when Habakkuk says, ‘How long are you going to watch all of this destruction and do nothing??’
“Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.” (1:5)
And he was. The political rise and fall of many nations was impossible to imagine yet orchestrated by God in order to bring about his plan for his people, whom he preserved through it all.
God is still doing a work in our day that we wouldn’t believe if he told us. We, like Job and Habakkuk, first ask for explanations and answers, yet no answer is truly satisfactory. What both of these books of the Bible teach us is that it’s not answers that satisfy, but God himself.
We study who God is, what his heart and his character is and when we experience suffering and see what seems to be unrestrained evil, we hold on to our Lord because we can trust him and he is at work. He only reveals so much to us, but it is enough.
I took away 5 themes through what Schmucker parses out for us in her study:
1. God is listening 2. God is working 3. God is sovereign 4. God is trustworthy 5. God is victorious
Habakkuk is such a valuable book to study. It’s short but rich with truths we need every day. We are no strangers to suffering and confusion as to what God is allowing in our world. This study will realign your faith in the person of God:
“At some point in our lives we will need to reconcile our theology and our experience. We will have to wrestle with the evil in the world when we serve a good God. This is exactly what Habakkuk is about. And in those moments when we don’t understand where God is or what He is doing, we will be tempted to change our theology to align with what is happening in the world. And in those moments we must stand strong on the truth of the Word of God and the goodness of his character. In those moments we must not interpret God’s Word through the lens of our circumstances, but we must interpret our circumstances through the lens of God’s Word. And ultimately it is in those moments that we must trust the sovereign hand of God that is working in ways that we cannot see.”
I’m a big fan of The Daily Grace Co. studies. Their statement of faith can be found here.
This particular study is only 3 weeks with 5 days of homework— a page or two of reading and 3 questions per day. Each week concludes with a 6-question reflection that asks us to reflect on what we learned about God, mankind, how it relates to the gospel, how we should respond and what action steps we can take as a result of what we read.
I also like how The Daily Grace Co. incorporates Scripture memory into their studies. Over the three weeks you will memorize the last few verses as quoted above.
I completed this study with a small group of women. We had good discussions but, for us, the questions were a little repetitive or vague and we mostly led our own discussion with what resonated with us. I wish the questions would have been a little more specific or discussion generating. Depending on your group, you may need to prepare a little extra to keep conversation going.
As with all of their studies, the book is beautifully designed— the color scheme, photographs, layout— and has nice glossy thick magazine-type pages. (Note: some pens may smear on the glossy pages)
Visit my blog post to see some pictures of the book.
Pro Tip: I have learned since taking advantage of the aforementioned sale that The Daily Grace Co. actually has sales quite often. Their prices are pretty good. Most of the studies during sales are between $5-10 dollars and cover specific topics or just go through a certain book of the Bible. You can browse here. (FYI- I don’t receive any kickback for any purchases you make)
"All that glitters is not gold." All books with beautiful esthetics are not necessarily worth reading. Maybe that's a little harsh but I really feel like more effort was put into the esthetics of this book than the actual Bible study and questions.
It started strong on the first day or two. Then the same question was asked in different wording 4 or 5 times in the first 10 days of devotions (which is 2/3 of the book). Considering there are only 3 questions to work through each day, you'd think they'd be able to come up with something different each time.
I also didn't find the readings overly engaging or enlightening. Again it was a lot of repetition.
Did I learn anything about Habakkuk? Yes, and therefore this gets 3 stars and not 2. 🤷♀️

I really enjoyed this quick study of one of the minor prophets that I had never delved much into before. I had read the book of Habakkuk but never studied it. This study helped me to better understand the book. One thing I found interesting by studying Habakkuk was its similarity to the book of Job. It could be because I recently studied that book as well but both Job and Habakkuk felt like God wasn't listening to their pleas and then after speaking with God, having a better understanding of who He is and how He's always remained faithful even when we don't understand His ways. I would recommend this study to anyone who may be struggling to see God in their current situation.
I love using these studies to take slow walks through different books of the Bible. I have been combining the studies with other Bible commentaries and the Blue Letter Bible (BLB) app for looking up root words to study our. There is so much depth we miss in the Bible with our common English translations and no historical context. I’ve completed the read the Bible in a year plans, but feel like it is just skimming the surface. Really enjoying the deeper dives this year.
Studied this with a group. Gorgeous pages. Some questions were great, but others were a bit repetitive. (It kept asking what I learned about God, and I chose to answer from the verses that chapter was focused on, instead of the whole chapter each time.) I would have missed the reference to Messiah coming in Hab 2:3 "IT will surely come; IT will not delay" if the book had not pointed out the quotation in Hebrews 10:37-38 changes "it" to "he" (some versions "one" as in "the coming one"
One of my favorite prophetic books of the Bible! A short but powerful book. Highly recommend these studies for anyone who is learning about the prophets and wanting to take a deep dive into the verses.
“Habakkuk worships in the waiting. He chooses to trust the one who has been faithful to reveal himself.”
“As Habakkuk looks back, we are able to observe what God has done and we are reminded of how remembering can strengthen our faith as we look forward to the future and the unknown.”
cannot recommend these studies enough - it’s so helpful to dig deep and understand the meaning behind every verse in an individual book! it’s so interesting to read through one book for so long and continually find new thing you didn’t see before! there’s also some on ideas and themes of the bible as a whole and not just individual books! a perfect way to dig into those harder to read or understand books of the bible! onto another one :,)
Like the other Daily Grace Co study I done, this study has a lot of ‘personal application’, rather than getting into the real details. However, it lead me to look into the book deeper, so for that I’m thankful.
Side note - the pictures and layout is beautiful, however, I hate the glossy paper it is printed on! The pen smudges.
If you're at a crossroads, God told you "no" or "not yet," or you're just plain confused on why God would let something happen, this is the Bible study for you. Habakkuk is an incredible book and this study does an excellent job to help you dive into it to understand just how much God loves us and is patient with us.
LOVED this study. I’ve done other Daily Grace Co. studies before and this might be my favorite so far. Good balance of not too little and not too much. Habakkuk is often over looked, but this one really changed my perspective on God’s character when we don’t understand. My favorite reminder in the study, and a new reminder I’m watching in my heart — Habakkuk turns our “What ifs” into “Even ifs”.
Loved the content of the study. If you are looking for a study that is reasonable to do daily, this one is for you. However, the questions seemed repetitive and lackluster. The content itself was fantastic, and that is why I give it four stars. Just don’t expect too much from the questions and try to instead think about what God is trying to teach us in the daily passages.
I did this study from The Daily Grace Co back in 2020, and it was so good! If you are looking for a good bible study material or even something you can do as a daily devotional. These are the way to go! 10/10 would recommend.
Fabulous study!!! Such a powerful, relatable book of the Bible that we often skip over. Very applicable to this day and age. Great application and good resources at the end of the book to enhance your study of Habbakuk. Would highly recommend.
I thought this was an excellent study for the book of Habakkuk. Daily homework with thought questions - enough for each day and not too much to get bogged down. An excellent study to do with a friend.
Theologically sound, good questions that were framed around the gospel and character of God--not just my emotions as some female devotions tend to be. Really enjoyed digging deep into Habakkuk and found the authors thoughts on the passage beneficial too! Rich
I really, really enjoyed this Bible study! I liked how the reading passages were divided and felt the questions were thought provoking. Definitely one I will be recommending to others!
Enjoyed the message but the Bible study substance was lacking for as lengthy as it is. The glossy pages are a pain, every pen I used smudged. Illustrations are beautiful though.
