Welcome to Holiday Hills, where there is magic & mystery in the air...
I wear many hats: I'm a friend. A sort-of girlfriend. A ghostwriter, and… ...oh yeah, a witch.
My editor always tells me to “write what you know.” Unfortunately, that’s what’s happening...literally.
When the main character in my latest novel—a witch herself—takes a new job with the Magical Bureau of Investigators, she stumbles upon a threat so big, it could destroy everything she holds dear.
Fiction, right? Nope.
For reasons beyond my witchy sixth sense, everything I write is now happening to me in real life!
Did I mention my character gets into REALLY bad situations? Now I’ve got to figure out who’s cast this awkward spell and find a way to reverse it.
And if I don’t do it soon, I might just wind up the "dead" in my deadline.

Witch This Way by Carolyn Ridder Aspenson brings readers back to Holiday Hills as Abby is struggling with a current novel she is writing for her "diva author". Abby is also struggling with her new magical abilities, too.
The story is engaging and Abby's character grows by leaps and bounds in this book. The plot moves quickly as magical forces take over her "work in progress" for the author and the fiction becomes reality in Holiday Hills. Join Abby, Bess, Stella and Gabe for a magical ride filled with complex motives, twists and turns, a few suspenseful moments that make you grip your ereader and just a touch of romance. A lovely afternoon read on a hot summer afternoon.
The author provided me with a copy of this book to review. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.
We're back in Holiday Hills and things are getting weird as life begins to imitate the book that Abby is currently writing. Then the book takes on a life of it's own, something weird is happening in this witchy world and it isn't a good weird! Excellent character development leads to realistic characters albeit magical ones entwined with a well developed plot that leaves you guessing at who the actual villain really is. You'll be turning pages and ignoring the world in no time so definitely put this book on your TBR list for a break from reality, even better pick up the first book then this one if you haven't read the first. It isn't absolutely necessary to read the entire series, but you would be missing out on some quality entertainment and backstory if you don't! You'll enjoy the mystery wrapped in humor to delight your day away!
Abby is discovering that being a witch is hard work. It's a balancing act between the mortal world and the mystical world. She can't make a mistake. Suddenly Abby has a supernatural stalker who wants a powerful amulet that is part of her heritage. Unfortunately she hasn't found it yet. Can she locate it before her enemy does? Can she keep those she loves safe? Abby needs to believe in herself and her powers. I like how she faces danger along with her familiar. Cooper is a Burmese cat with attitude and a big appetite. He is always there for Abby. She needs all the help she can get. I knew that Abby could depend on the Sheriff. He's a good guy. I wasn't sure that he could help with her supernatural problems because he's human. This story is fast paced and exciting. There are plenty of surprises. I'm not sure that Holiday Hills will ever be the same. Carolyn Ridder Aspenson pulled me in from the first page. Her characters are interesting and her stories are unpredictable. A great book.
I freaking loved this cozy mystery! Abby is a new witch having come into her powers after the death of her mom. She can communicate with her cat familiar, Cooper. She lives in a magical town, which non-magicals are not aware of. Her mother’s best friend Bessie is helping her with learning about her powers. Her best friend Stella is not a witch and not allowed to know about the change Abby is going through. I love that books are a big part of this story. Bessie owns a book and coffee shop. Stella is an editor and Abby is a ghostwriter. In this book, Abby is writing a story about a witch. When bad things start happening in town Abby realizes there is a connection to her story...and to her. It looks like someone wants her power and they are willing to kill for it. Aside from books being a big part of the story, I really enjoy the characters. This isn’t the first book I have read by Ms. Aspenson. I have read a few. She really has a magic touch with creating interesting, lovable, real characters. Her characters aren’t the kind you read about and think, I wish I knew her/him. Her characters are so real you think of people you know who are like them. I love her ability to do that. I know you want to know about the mystery and how well she wrote that. Extremely well. Even when I thought I had figured it out, I didn’t. In the end I was surprised by more than just who did it. I’m now eager for the next book in this magical series. Now read the book and let Ms Aspenson enchant you.
*I received an uncorrected electronic copy of this book for review consideration. I voluntarily reviewed this book. My review is based on my thoughts and feelings while reading and afterwards.*
This book in not a mystery in the normal sense. No one dies. It is a mystery still because there is still a need to figure out who did what. Nice change from someone dies type mysteries. We forget not all mysteries are deaths involved.
Can you figure out who is causing the fires? I thought I had it figured out early on. However, Abby’s reasoning at one point convinced me to change my mind. Though most of the time she had me in circles. All I will say is watch out for rabbit trails.
I will never call catnip by catnip ever again. I will always use that term from here on out. Read the book to find out. Worth it just for that new name!!! Still laughing about it.
I love how Abby describes what happened and what the outcome of it was. Kudos to Abby!!!! Now if I could just learn the same lesson.
Cooper, you are just too funny. You remind me of a favorite character from another author. (I miss him terribly.)
The reason this book received four stars and not five is that I had a bit of difficulty reading it. Granted not my best days personally. However, I found myself having to reread numerous sections of the book. Yes sometimes we have tor reread a section or two, but this was a bit more than normal.
That aside, I also had problems with the references to the previous book. Now mind you that I was initially under the impression that this was book one in a new series, I did figure out it was not, about a quarter of the way through and confirmed it with author’s booklist. Usually, you can understand the references a bit, and they usually entice us to go back and get caught up. I have to admit that I struggled a bit – like it was not enough info or something was missing.
All that aside still a wonderful story. If you are into mysteries whether cozy or not, then this is a book for you. Thoroughly enjoyable, easy to read. Try it for yourself.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
Abby is a witch that lives in Holliday Hills which uses very magical town with lots of different kinds of supernatural beings, plus there are normal people there too that have no idea about them. Abby's best friend is a normal and she has no idea that Abby is a witch. Bess is like a mother to Abby because she was Abby's mother's best friend. Bess owns a bookstore with a coffee cafe inside call The Enchanted. She served up coffee with a bit magic to help you get the day going. But the best thing is her cat Cooper because he can talk and is really smart. Abby is a ghost writer, she writes the book and someone else get the credit. Gabe is the sheriff in town and kinda Abby's boyfriend. Then there are two new guys that come to town, one no one knows anything about him, the other one has been hire to work in the police department in town. Then the fires start, first is the town doctor's office that go up in smoke, no one is sure how it happened, Gabe discovers that it is arson. Then there is another fire this time is Abby's late mother's cottage that so just sold. What is going on ?? Why is this happening, and who is doing this. Abby goes on has her cards read and is told to be very careful and not to trust any men!! Things are getting weird and weird. What going to happen next???
This book was better than #2, The plot was engaging and the characters ere fun and quirky!
Amazon synopsis: Welcome to Holiday Hills, the most magical and mysterious cozy little town you'll ever visit. And trust me, I know - I'm a friend to all sorts of quirky characters here, from witches and werewolves to shifters and good old-fashioned humans. Like me, you’ll love hanging out with both magicals and humans at the Enchanted Bookstore and Café where the daily gossip it always ready to order.
Oh, and did I mention I'm also the sort-of girlfriend of the sexy chief of police? His smile makes me weak in the knees.
But that's not the half of it. I'm also a ghostwriter of paranormal cozy mysteries featuring a witch amateur sleuth. My editor always says to write what you know, but lately, that's become a bit of a problem.
Well, more than a bit.
See, the main character in my latest novel takes a job with the Magical Bureau of Investigation and stumbles upon a huge threat. Fiction, right? Wrong. For some reason beyond my sixth sense, everything I write is now coming to true. I’ve become the main character of a true life witchy paranormal cozy mystery!
And to make matters worse, my fictional character gets into some seriously bad situations. Guess what that means for me? Yep, you guessed it - bad situations. A lot of them.
Luckily, I have a trusted familiar by my side - a talking Burmese cat who's addicted to canned tuna (not something we have in common). Together, we've got to figure out who's cast this crazy spell and find a way to reverse it before I become the next victim in my own deadline.
This is a very nice, fairly new series loaded with excitement, mystery, and an edge-of-your-seat page turning story that had my attention from beginning to end! The 2nd book of the Holiday Hills Witch Cozy Mystery Series, this author always delivers top quality books and this is no exception. The main character, Abby Odell, just found out she was a witch not too long ago when her mother died. She is a ghostwriter for a best selling paranormal series, and in this book not only does everything she writes starts happening for real, the book actually starts writing itself before her very eyes, and horrible things start happening as an arsonist keeps striking in her town. Abby tries to figure it all out with the help of her adorable cat, but since the likely culprit is a magical, she can’t even tell her best friend what is going on. Plus, having been told by a local expert in all things supernatural that the person causing all the trouble is really after her and that she is in danger and cannot trust any man, she is all on her own to try to figure out who is after her and make him stop. Abby is just learning how to control her newly-acquired magical powers, and the regular characters in the series are developing nicely. Anxiously waiting for the next one…
Let me start by saying I read this without reading the first book and found that I wish I had read it first, I feel like I might have missed a little backstory, however, once I got into the book, and once I learned the characters, it moved along nicely and I never looked back. Never a spoiler in my reviews, this super fun cozy tells the tale of a witch, Abby, coming to her own with her powers with the support of her close friend who runs the local book/coffee shop. As she struggles with her powers and they get more powerful and useful, she is at the same time ghostwriting a book, a cozy mystery about a witch, and interestingly enough, the book she's currently writing seems to be mirroring her life. Nicely written and keeps your interest, with some twists and turns that you don't see coming, super charming and hunky characters and familiars that will make you just plain laugh out loud. Holiday Hills, the town in which this all takes place is one of those places that you can picture yourself visiting, having a fun time, and since regular people live there too, if you love a cozy mystery you will fit right in! I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest, unsolicited review.
Witch This Way is the second book in The Holiday Hills Witch series written by Carolyn Ridder Aspenson. While I do not believe it was necessary to read the first book in the series, I do intend to go back and read the first book, There's a New Witch in Town, to fill in a couple of gaps I feel that I may be missing. Witch This Way was a completely entertaining read with just the right amount of chuckle worthy moments.
I really appreciated getting to know Abby as a character. Her developing skill set and how she handles various situations was priceless. Having recently discovered she was a witch, with powers, proves to be challenging when discovering and reigning in these powers. And of course - life is imitating life through her books. Now that was very “interesting”.
Holiday Hills is a magical town where non-magical human beings no nothing of the magic that is surrounding them. Abby’s best friend - Stella - must know nothing of Abby’s new found magical skills. Luckily, Abby has enough magical prowess in her arsenal to “hide” her talents - though frequently this provides for the chuckle worthy moments.
Abby is a ghost writer for a series and is now basing the newest story on life. At one point, it seemed like the book was writing itself and Abby had to stop the bad stuff from actually happening. This book writing was intriguing and I found added another dimension to this cozy mystery.
There is of course a bit of romance, which I presume will simmer for a few more books in the series. I do like the slow burn of young romance.
The supernatural “bad” guys and the scenes they were in was pure delight. Again - I am not sure I have had the opportunity to laugh and be taken away by the story in this manner is quite a while.
I must leave my review here so as to not inadvertently write any spoilers in. Let me leave you with my thoughts - If you like a bit of paranormal, a bit of romance, a fair amount of chuckle worthy moments…. then this book is definitely for you!
*I would like to thank the author for supplying a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review*
Abby is a witch in the magical town of Holiday Hills. She lives over a coffee shop/bookstore run by her Mother's best friend. Abby recently came into her powers when her Mother died and is still learning her way. Abby is also a ghost writer for a diva of an author writing cozy mysteries about what else, a witch. When her book begins writing itself and Abby's life begins to mirror the writing she and her friends have to get to the bottom of the mysteries in town. Who are the newcomers to town? One of which is working with her boyfriend, the sheriff. Who is setting fires in town destroying buildings of magical folk? As Abby and friends begin to look for the answers she learns more about her powers and how to best use them. I have fallen in love with Abby and her little town and can't wait for the next book in this series.
Abby (Abigail Odell) is a Ghost Writer, meaning she writes stories for other authors under their names.
Abby is a witch that didn't know she was one until her mom's death about a year earlier and the protection spell her mom had put on her ended with her death.
As Abby is writing her next best seller. Strange things start happening. Her story starts writing itself, and the things in the story start happening in real life, putting her friends and herself in real dangers.
The good thing is her powers are increasing, and she is growing more confident in herself and her powers at the same time which allows her to help those that she cares about.
This was a fun story with well developed characters and several twists to keep you guessing.
Another fun book in this series. I do love how the whole town is supernatural, well okay not the whole town but you get the idea. I do like how we get to see Abby writing her book while reading about her. It's fun to read. Abby finds herself in another bad situation both personally and professionally. She is trying to keep things from hel best friend for safety reasons. She is trying to move her relationship with Gabe further along and now her book she is writing is writing itself. At the same time everything in the book she is writing starts happening but why. Abby doesn't know who to trust but in the end she figures it out. I look forward to seeing what happens next.
*I received a copy of this book via publisher/author and am voluntarily leaving a review.*
Witch this Way was an absolutely excellent witchy cozy mystery!
Abby is coming into her own and getting comfortable with her recently discovered witchy powers. She is happy with the many other hats she wears - friend, writer, and maybe girlfriend to Gabe. Everything turns sideways when the text in the book she is writing begins magically changing to match events happening in Holiday Hills. Abby needs to figure out why there have been multiple cases of arson, why her writing is spinning out control, who her real friends are, and what on earth she wants to do with her life. Oh, and all this has to be done before she or her loved ones are injured or killed.
Witch this Way is filled with great character development, twists and turns, and a really intriguing mystery!
I wonder how most people would react to knowing they were never human, but a witch or a warlock. The main character finds out in the first book she is a witch, when all her life she thought she was just an author of some decently written stories about witches, shifters, and other magical creatures. In this book she is exposed to a necklace, and then a charm that is supposed to open her powers completely and make her the most powerful witch alive. Obviously, things are never that straight forward or it would make for a duller story. The necklace is stolen from her and then she actually finds the charm by the middle of the story. There are some surprises in store for her and the bad guys. Read the book. You may just enjoy it.
I love this book! Abby is a witch who, as a ghost writer, writes about a witch. In Witch This Way, events in Abby's writing begin happening in Holiday Hills. Shortly after two fires from her book happen for real, Abby loses control of her narrative. Something or someone has taken control of her computer and threatens not only Abby but also her friends. Abby doesn't know who to trust. With her familiar, Cooper, Abby sets out to stop this new evil in town. Along the way, Abby matures, comes to terms with her increasing powers and grows to accept them and her role as a powerful witch. There is humor, suspense, and action in this book. Can't wait for the next in the series.
The characters were phenomenal. I really enjoyed reading and getting to know Abby. She is a very strong willed character which made me want to keep reading.
The story-line was incredible. I really enjoyed trying to solve the mystery with Abby. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, I was made to believe I was wrong and then BOOM, told ya!! LOL It was an edge of my seat story and shocking, yet fun all in one remarkable book. I absolutely love this authors way of storytelling. She keeps me in suspense and hooked from beginning to end and I highly recommend this read!!
Witch this Way is the second in The Holiday Hills Witch series. In this story, Abby who is a ghostwriter for a book company and is still learning her witch powers find out that her newest book is writing itself. Scary when everything in her book comes true in real life and Abby can't do anything to stop it.
Then she comes to find out that everyone she knew isn't what they appear to be. This witch stuff is hard enough! What could happen next?
This new story in the series was action-packed, with wonderful characters, and funny too! Copper the familiar is the best with his sarcastic remarks throughout the story.
I really liked this second book in the Holiday Hills series with Abby O'Dell. In this book, Abby is getting used to her magic, having Cooper as her familiar and things moving along with Gabe, the police chief. There's a new man in town, Ryland, who all the women are swooning after and Abby's best friend, Stella, seems to be developing a relationship with. Gabe hires a Deputy, Austin. At first Abby is suspicious but after hearing Gabe's information on Austin, she relaxes. Two fires in town put everyone on edge. The second was her mother's home. Now this is personal. This story is a roller coaster of events. Things that happen, end up in Abby's book she is writing, only she didn't put them there. Twist, turns and things not what they seem with a satisfying ending. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily provided this review.
Abby Odell never knew she was a witch and since she found out her learning process has been touch and go. Spells accidentally fly, she has a smart-alecky cat for a familiar, she has to keep humans from learning about her magic, and the new book she is ghost-writing keeps wanting to write itself. Oh…and did I mention that there is an arsonist on the loose in town, just to add a little spice to life, that seems to be targeting magic people and maybe Abby in particular.
This book has good characters, humor, magic, and a solid mystery storyline. This is the first book I have read in this series and I definitely would like to read more in this Cozy series.
Two newcomers in town and Abby doesn't quite trust either one of them. There are two fires, and everyone wants to know who set them as they were definitely arson. The hard part for Abby is that one of the fires was her mother's house. Something is going on and Abby is in the center of it, but she doesn't know who to trust or how to fix it. Suddenly she finds out more than she wants to know about Magical Bureau of Investigations and who is writing the story she is working on but reflecting what is happening in real time and not what she is writing. Working with Gabe, in the end it's all clear and the masterminds are captured. Great Read.
Being a relatively new witch, Abby is still figuring out her abilities and finding her internal compass. With two new men in town (and one working with the sheriff) she isn't too sure about the newcomers. Then there are a couple fires in town that are suspicious, and things begin to fall apart.
It is interesting to read the author's "rules" regarding witchcraft, and try to figure what was going on behind the obvious. This became a challenge for Abby as well, and it became apparent that things were not what they seemed.
Lots of twists leading to a fun and exciting book.
Wow! There is a lot going on in this fast paced summer fun read. I particularly love that the main character of the cozy mystery is writing a cozy mystery herself. When her book becomes more than a story things in town and for Abby get a bit crazy. Abby's character has a ton of growth in this one and it makes for fun reading. There were so many shocking moments in this one too! I'm anxious to see where things head with Gabe from here. This book opens up so many possibilities for the series and I can't wait to see what happens next.
This relatively new series is a winner! Carolyn Ridder Aspenson has done it again. She gives us a solid storyline, fun characters, and enough magic to keep us happy – all with a bit of romance thrown in. The surprise betrayals gave a twist to the ending, which was satisfying. You kind of thought you knew who the bad guy was, but the fact that he wasn’t working alone, along with the identity of the second person, was a real surprise. I’m trying not to put in spoilers, so you have to read the book to understand what I’m clumsily saying. This series rocks! I received this book as an ARC, but I’d be singing the praises of this series, regardless.
Exciting Paranormal Cozy This is not your normal paranormal cozy. There are no crafts or foodies or even fashionistas. This is a good adventure involving magical beings and a young witch coming into her own powers. I have not yet read the first book, so I can assure you that this book stands alone just fine. This book has a great mystery plot which involves finding out who is who, magically speaking as well as what they are really looking for. It has a great ending and now I can't wait or the next book.
Abby is happily being a 'ghostwriter' for another famous writer. But this last story is really bothering her. Things just are not going as per usual and it is really getting to her. Then there is the new Cheif of Police that Abby doesn't trust. She just doesn't know why. Then the fires start and things get weird really fast! Can Abby find the answers to all the things that are going wrong in their small town of Holiday Hills? What about her writing? The deadline is approaching fast!!! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. Love it!!! Very original.
Witch this Way (Holiday Hills Witch #2), my ninth highly enjoyable read from author Carolyn Ridder Aspenson. Well-written & enjoyable, I was only familiar with this author from the Lily Sprayberry Realtor mysteries until I was given a copy of this book & hadn't read There's a New Witch in Town (Holiday Hills Witch #1) yet so I went out & bought it to read first. An excellent read, even better than the first. This may be the author's best work to date! I look forward to reading more in this series & from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Witch this Way was a fun read Abby Odell just found out she is a witch. She is a ghost writer who writes cozy mysteries about a fictional character a Witch named Esmeralda. She lives in Holiday Hills with her talking cat Cooper. Now the story is starting to write itself and it is coming true. Her Doctor's office just burned down and now her Mothers home was burned down. There are mysterious notes and pictures of Abby at the scene so of course she has to get involved. I enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read the next one.
"Dogs looked for the good in people, while cats, especially Cooper, looked for food."
Cooper is the best cat and Abbie is one of the best female lead characters I have ever read. Although sometimes she's in over her head and doesn't always think things through (don't we all-nobody is perfect). But still, I am living right now for her crazy adventures- oh, and her and Gabe too. ♡
another exciting coming of age and learning the consequences witch adventure
the somewhat timid young woman is challenged not only by those that would steal or manipulate things with her powers, her trust and faith is shaken again and again
can she trust those trying to help her? even the might be well intentioned folks act trying to control limit and protect her - does no one really believe in how she might act?
intense and moving paranormal drama, action, adventure and maybe a bit of romance
