Once Upon an Irish Summer

Rate this book
Fiona Murphy became obsessed with a legendary pirate queen in college. A recent college grad, she's in Ireland to volunteer for the summer at a small museum dedicated to the woman's memory. But once the summer is done, might local scholar Rory O'Keeffe convince her to stay? You Can’t Embrace Your Future Until You Deal With Your Past…

Fiona Burke has long been obsessed with Ireland’s famed, sixteenth-century pirate queen, Grace O’Malley. Now that she’s on the final stretch of earning her PhD in history, all she needs to do is finish her dissertation—with Grace O’Malley as her subject—then return home to Boston to defend it. Once that’s done she can compete for a highly coveted history professor position.

Fiona arrives in western Ireland aiming to interview the locals and find additional folklore to flesh out her work. But when she encounters Grace’s distant relative—the handsome, commanding Rory O’Malley—she gets seriously distracted. Rory shares her passion for history and Ireland, and cares for his grandfather and great-uncle in a winsome way. Unfortunately he also carries wounds beyond his injured leg…wounds that threaten to dismantle every little bit of a relationship that he and Fiona begin to build.

As a famed TV host becomes intrigued with Fiona—as well as convinced she should do guest appearances on his show—Rory starts to figure out that he might be as interested in his own personal romantic future as he is in Ireland’s epic past. But can he take the steps toward the healing he needs before it’s too late? It all remains to be seen…Once Upon an Irish Summer.

"Lisa Bergen has penned an immersive read laced with intelligence and steeped in the myths of Ireland. Transportive and warm, Once Upon an Irish Summer is a thoughtful escapist romance featuring a clever, relatable heroine, an unforgettable hero and intercepted by the history of legendary pirate queen Grace O’Malley. With just enough vulnerability to loan it a deft human touch and backed by impressive research, this is a treatise on quiet heroism and finding home in lush, new places.”

I had a little bit of trouble getting into the story, but I think that was my fault and not the author's. At one point, I was afraid that it was going to turn into romantic suspense, which I don't like to read. But it didn't go here, thankfully.

I really enjoyed the depth of the characters, both the hero Rory and the heroine Fiona, as well as most of the secondary characters, too. So many little details fueled my imagination.

At first, I didn't know if all the details about the pirate queen Grace were essential to the story. But as it unfolded, it all came together, both in the current plot regarding treasure-seekers and in the parallels between Grace and Fiona.

I loved the humor woven throughout, from Rory's “hmmm” to pop culture references to Fiona holding her breath to “make the car skinnier” on the narrow country roads.

There were a few typos, a wrong word (“ancestor” instead of “descendant” in chapter 24), and a phrase that seemed a bit inappropriate to me (though it could mean something benign in Ireland).

But in all, I enjoyed this story a lot.

Favorite quotes:
“Rory watched her go until she rounded the bend, then he looked up to the sky, sighed, and closed his eyes. This was what happened when he got around women. He made a fool of himself. It just wasn't worth it.” (chapter 2)

“There's good reason to call it 'the Emerald Isle.'” (chapter 7)

“Rory swallowed hard. His earlier thoughts of keeping this to a friendship were obviously quickly fading.” (chapter 8)

“It was as if the whole world was echoing the joy that had infiltrated his heart.” (chapter 16)

“[H]e was determined to let this thing between them unfold slowly. To not force it. To allow God to weave together their hearts—and a way forward for them—or to help them determine that they were but friends for a season. Oh God, he prayed silently, don't let it be just-friends.” (chapter 18)

“'Women don't let this sort of thing settle. For them, it simmers.'” (chapter 21) – at least it's true for me!

“Brave enough to ask for help. He'd always thought of courage as soldiering forward, even if you had to do so alone. But she was right.” (chapter 22)

Once Upon An Irish Summer was such a fun and adventurous read. I loved the setting in which the story took place (Ireland!) and the Grace O’Malley history/treasure was SO interesting.

I thought the characters were really well written and I found Fiona and Rory's romance to be sweet. The ending was wonderful and tied things up nicely.

All in all, Once Upon An Irish Summer is a book you should add to your summer TBR if you enjoy sweet contemporary romances with a little bit of adventure. It was really good!

This was a cute read. I liked Rory and Fiona and their storylines, and how Rory's PSTD was given a nice sizeable chunk of the story. I enjoyed getting to know him and how his vulnerabilities were stopping him from moving on. Before meeting Fiona he was stuck in his past, and he realizes that he wants a chance with Fiona and he needs to mend from the trauma that he didn't heal from.

Lisa Bergren took me on a glorious trip to Ireland...and I didn’t want to come home! Wonderful characters, a beautifully painted setting, and an intriguing mystery were only the beginning. But it was the romance simmering between Fiona and Rory that truly stole my heart and made me turn the last page with a contented sigh (and a hope that I might meet these characters in another novel someday soon). Highly recommended and all in all, just what you'd expect from Lisa Bergren!

This was a hard book for me to get through. I felt like it had a lot of potential, but at first, it was just focusing on the romance way to much, and it was a distraction to the history.

It was written amazingly, of course, since Lisa T. Bergren wrote it! And I really enjoyed the whole history aspect.

So Fiona goes to Ireland for her Grace O'Malley dissertation, but in the process finds romance in Rory.

Rory doesn't want to allow himself to love again, from what's happened in the past. And because of an accident that happened a few years back. But with Fiona's help, he works through all that, and opens his heart up again, to Fiona and God. I really did enjoy that part of it, Rory finally finding who he is, working through his past and realizing he IS a man a woman can love.

I absolutely loved learning about Grace O'Malley! I had never heard of her before, and now want to look into her a little more. Bergren did an awesome job with the information on her!

While this isn't a book I would recommend for everyone, due to romance and a little language, by the end I thought it was okay. The end did surprise me! I didn't see that one coming.

*Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this book. I was not required to write an honest review and all opinions are my own.

This was a perfect book to escape the insane reality of life as we know it right now. Your mind easily travels to the luscious & vibrant countryside of Ireland. Old cottages and farmhouses sit at the end of long winding driveways and herds of sheep dot the meadows & pastures. Castles, bridges, and ruins seem to pop from the page, as if you're there in person exploring them yourself. That's what I love about Lisa's writing! She writes with such detail that you feel like your standing right there next to the character, seeing what they're seeing and experiencing what they're experiencing.
The storyline was original, I thought. I can't recall ever reading a story with a similar storyline to this one. You know how sometimes you just read a lot of books and occasionally they all start sounding the same? Well it wasn't like that for me with this book. It was quite original.
Learning about the Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley, through the pages of this book was exceptionally intriguing to me. Before reading this book I had no idea the woman even existed, so upon finishing it I started doing my own research on her and learning more about her story. I love when real history is woven into the plot of a story. It just makes the book that much more interesting to me.
The characters were well devised, Fiona was sweet and her dedication to her dissertation was admirable. I loved the passion she had for learning everything there was about Grace O’Malley. I loved her curiosity when it came to the treasure hunting aspect of the book as well. Though I couldn’t really relate to her character that well, I still loved her.
As for Rory...I mean what girl wouldn’t love a tall, burly, ginger farmer with an Irish lilt to his voice? ;) I loved him, as I knew I would. Rory’s character comes with a bit of baggage though. Lots of things haunt him from his past, both physically and mentally. The author brought up the topic of PTSD and it just makes your heart go out to Rory’s character even more.
Also, I don’t know if it’s because in the past 3 books I’ve read the heros all use canes to help them walk, but I like that. It brings realness to the character in a way, as many heros are written to be in perfect physical health. Does that sound weird? That probably sounded weird? I guess basically what I am trying to say is that I appreciate it when an author goes against the grain a bit when they write their characters. When they shine light on a certain “handicap” that in reality turns out to be a strength. Anywho, I’ll stop rambling now. :P
I do hope that if you haven’t read this book that you’ll indeed go out and get yourself a copy. It is a great escape and an enjoyable story.

Oh my word, this was such a cute story!! I literally love everything about this book. I think one of my favorite parts about this whole book was the slight mystery behind the discovery of Grace O'Malley's treasure. I also loved all the history/research that is woven throughout this entire book. It was so amazing!!

The characters were honestly some of my favorite. Rory and Fiona were so cute together and I loved watching them fall in love with one another. It was so sweet!! Fiona reminded me of myself a lot only because of our shared passion for history, though I don't think I'll ever get my PhD in it, lol. Rory was such a cinnamon roll and my heart broke for his past, but I loved seeing him overcome his past and grow out of his shell. Granddad was also amazing and his advice that he gives Rory at one point during this book was spot on and I feel like more men need to hear it!

This book was just so amazing and I loved it so much! I also loved the setting so much and Rory had an Irish accent so...😍🥰 I love Mrs. Bergren's writing and this book did not disappoint! I cannot wait to read more of her books!!

*FTC: I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion. All thoughts are my own. I was not reuiqred to write a positive review.*

Fiona Burke travels to Ireland to finish her doctoral dissertation on the famous Ireland's famous pirate Queen.

However, she doesn't bargain for a blooming romance with her landlord's grandson. Of whom the family is descendant's of.

She also gets mixed up with the local TV series host and explorer whose show is on the line. And will stop at nothing to get what he wants on keeping it.

I can't say our heroine was endeared to me as much as our hero and his backstory. A lot happened in this book.

If you can’t get to the Emerald Isle in person, a book is the next best thing—specifically, Once Upon an Irish Summer. Add in some historical research (on location, of course), a little bit of mystery, and a handsome Irish farmer and you’ve got the ideal getaway! And that’s what this read was. A lovely getaway for a few hours as I visited with Fiona, Rory, and his grandda and got tangled in their mishaps, successes, and the romance that gently unfolded.

Fiona Burke was a winsome heroine with a spritely combination of intelligence and enthusiasm that only occasionally led her astray. Rory was her more reserved complement, a man bearing wounds both physical and emotional, and I enjoyed watching Fiona draw him out of himself as they got to know one another. Rory’s grandda was a great addition to the cast, too, and Bergren did an excellent job of conveying their lilting brogue without making it too distracting for the reader.

TV host Kiernan Kelly added an interesting element to the story, and although there were times I thought I knew what would happen next, my suspicions fell through as often as not. That not only increased my engagement in the story but kept me guessing a little at how certain elements would play out.

In short, if you’re in the mood for a romantic getaway to Ireland, Once Upon an Irish Summer is your ticket!

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Fiona Burke is in Ireland to research and finish up her dissertation. She has no interest in a summer romance, but Rory O'Malley draws her from the moment she meets him. Rory is staying the summer on his grandfather's farm. Dealing with PTSD and a broken heart, Rory has closed his heart to anyone trying to get close. He has no intention of opening his heart to Fiona. But Fiona's enthusiasm for her dissertation subject is hard to ignore and soon Rory and Fiona find themselves enjoying each other's company as well as the hunt for information on one of Rory's ancestors.

I absolutely loved this book! The author has a way of making the reader feel like they are smack dab in the middle of the setting. I felt like I was seeing all of the sites that Fiona was as she visited. The countryside was vividly depicted as well as all of the ancient ruins. The romance between Rory and Fiona was sweet and their tenderness with each other was definitely sigh-worthy. A bit of treasure hunting, a bit of the dastardly villain, and a lot of romance and this book was an enjoyable get-away for a couple of days. I definitely recommend it.

Full of adventure, danger, and romance, Once Upon an Irish Summer is a great summertime (or any time) read!

When I first sat down with the book, I must admit that I struggled a bit with the Irish brogue, and the pacing felt a little slow. But as I kept reading, I found myself totally immersed in the story!

Fiona and Rory are both incredibly likable—yet imperfect—characters, and I loved watching them find their way to each other. I also really enjoyed both Rory's grandpa and great-uncle, and I thought Uncle George's Alzheimer's was handled well. I lost my grandfather to dementia, so Alzheimer's subplots can be very difficult for me, but this particular plot line was handled seriously without becoming maudlin.

Perhaps my favorite aspect of the story was Fiona's search for Grace O'Malley's emblem that may have marked the path to her treasure. Bergren did a great job of building the tension and sense of foreboding as Fiona became more entangled with TV host (and treasure hunter) Kiernan. I certainly wanted to shake some sense into Fiona at times, as practically everyone warned her about Kiernan, but I also could understand her motivation in taking a chance with him.

Overall, this is such a fun read, and it made me want to pick up the other books in Bergren's "Once Upon a Summer" collection! 4 stars.

What a delightful adventure! My trip to Ireland earlier this year had to be cancelled, so Lisa T. Bergren’s Once Upon an Irish Summer proved to be just the Irish fun I needed.

Fiona Burke heads to Ireland to research the subject of her dissertation, the famed pirate queen Grace O’Malley, and of course, one of her distant relatives, the handsome Rory O’Malley, she does not exactly need.

From beginning to end, the pages of this book feel transportive. As I read, they immersed me in the captivating scenery and history of Ireland. Add to that a sweet romance, a bit of a mystery, and two characters I could not help loving, and Once Upon an Irish Summer is perfectly enjoyable. If you needed a trip to Ireland, like I did, I definitely recommend checking out this book.

This book is set in Ireland. A place that has LONG been in my top-10-places-I-want-to-visit list. And I was so excited to read it! Then there's also the fact that Lisa Bergren is a long-time favorite author of mine. In fact, I cannot remember when I first read her books, it's been over twenty years ago. So...putting these together, when I found out about this book, I knew I'd have to read it!

Fiona is an absolutely sweet, smart, if a bit lacking in confidence, red-headed heroine. The book begins with her making a trip to Ireland to finish her college dissertation. She's doing a research on the famed Grace O'Malley, a well-known historical figure--the famed pirate Queen of Ireland.  She has little more than arrived when she gets lost, and is of course rescued by a handsome hero, whose name is Rory.

I just love all the sweet descriptions of Ireland. It's beautiful countryside. It's quaint little thatched cottages. And that Irish brogue. I love that accent, and loved being able to hear it in my head as I read. Ms. Bergen has outdone herself with this story.

Both Rory and Fiona are determined that they do not want a summer fling. So they tell themselves, friends only. But, you don't have to read very long before you see that they might not be able to stick to this resolution.

In spite of himself, Rory wants to spend time with Fiona, and help her in her quest. I loved reading about their explorations of Ireland. The castles. And so much more. I think I've already said it, but it needs to be said again. This book has such great descriptions of Ireland. I could (almost!) feel like I was actually there, visiting all these enchanting places with them.

As Fiona keeps tracking down information about the famed O'Malley, I found myself equally intrigued with what happened to her. How many of the old folklore tales and legends were true, and which ones were nothing but tall tales? There is a bit of mystery surrounding all of this...and I loved it.

The sweet romance that slowly plays itself out in this book is just delightful.

I found this to be a perfect summer read. A lovely way to escape to that Emerald Isle and visit days-gone-by.

"Descending from a craggy peak to her right was a long, sloping green hill, dotted with sheep just coming into their summer coats after spring shearing. To her left, the hill descended to a meandering, small river. Tidy farms were divided by hedges and rock walls, all seeming to run sheep."

I have never been to Ireland before, but thanks to Lisa Tawn Bergren's lovely descriptions, I feel like I was able to travel there. I did not sit down and plot out all of the places that she mentioned. But I still got a feel for what the countryside and small towns would be like. I enjoyed traveling along as her main character looked into the past.

Fiona is researching the former pirate queen, Grace O'Malley. I had not heard of this true life historical figure before. The plot kept feeling like it could become a time slip book at any point. But I actually really liked the fact that the story stayed modern. We only get Fiona's side of the story - only the research side. I really liked her perspective.

The other researchers who have studied Grace O'Malley also add an interesting element to the plot. Unexpected parts kept the storyline moving. Her research that involved going to different on-site locations also helped me to immerse myself in Irish culture.

From the beginning, I was cheering for Fiona to get together with Rory. But Rory is a troubled hero. He struggles with PTSD due to some traumatic circumstances. I appreciated the fact that the author including counseling as a part of the plot. As the back cover states, "you can't embrace your future until you deal with your past."

I greatly enjoyed this book. Although this is a part of a "new" series of four books that also includes two previously published book, these are standalone titles. The characters only play minor cameo roles in this set. I have been a fan of Lisa's books for thirty years now, and she continues to write beautiful books.

Can she find her future while seeking the past?

My rating is 4.5 stars

I really want to visit Ireland now!

It only took a moment for me to be drawn into this delightful story! Filled with rich depictions of the beautiful countryside and just enough brogue to add appropriate flavor, Once Upon an Irish Summer was just right.

Meeting quite by accident - literally, Rory and Fiona find they have much in common. Both love history. Besides that, he is a descendant of the pirate queen Fiona is researching with whom she is captivated. Oh, and did I mention that she is staying at his grandda's cottage for the summer?

I loved Rory's gentle, protective nature, and vulnerability. He had been protecting his heart after it had been broken when he returned home injured and wasn't ready to let anyone in. Especially with the way he still suffered from PTSD.

Fiona was fun! She was brilliant and yet naive. Her passion for learning all she could about Grace O'Malley led her all over the county on adventures she hadn't expected. And when she stumbled upon hints that she was on the verge of a great discovery, she became a bit reckless. Uh oh!

One of the things I noticed fairly quickly was the wonderful way the author used Irish dialect and expressions and explained them without making them sound forced. I can't think of another book where this has been done so well!

If you enjoy romance with a hint of faith and adventure, I heartily recommend Once Upon an Irish Summer.

Fiona Burke's PHD disseration and obsession of the female pirate queen, Grace O'Malley, leads her to take a summer trip to Ireland that will take her on a fact finding mission about the elusive pirate queen. She is staying at the farm where Rory O'Malley is summering to care for his grandfather and great uncle. Grace finds out that Rory is a distant relative of the pirate queen, so their mutual interests in history makes for good chemistry between the two of them.
I enjoyed this tale very much, and the beautiful scenery and interesting historical tidbits made it even more pleasurable. I never dreamed that there were female pirates in the area, much less in the 16th century. Fiona is a delightful character and has a lot of warmth, althought I do question her obsession with a pirate. Rory is a bit more stand offish with a wound that goes deeper than his leg injury. But the truth is that neither one of them were looking for a summer romance, especially after a famed TV host takes a shine to her. I enjoyed the relaxed pace of the book and Rory and his steadiness and kindness. This book has a little bit of everything -- a dash of romance, some mystery, adventure, and some breathtaking imagery of Ireland.

Spectacular. Beautiful. Heartfelt. Cozy. Brilliant.

Everything I needed to make myself even more excited for my trip to Ireland this summer (ironic, isn't it?). All of the characters have such lovely personalities, melding together just right in their respective roles. The romance is clean of spice (YAY!) and so incredibly heartwarming, the perfect example of a Godly couple. I love how naturally the characters mentioned and talked/prayed to God which I am so thankful for. Funnily enough,it has been a pet peeve of mine recently when I find books that make the habit of praying/practicing Christianity and/or the act of their prayers getting answered an unrealistic thing that feels like a premeditated shoutout to God with the intent on solely solving the problem in an easier way. But as always, my favorite author of all time has kept me hooked until the very end once again and done it gracefully as well as skillfully.

Her imagery is vivid as always, making it easy for the reader to get lost in the story and within the beautiful hills of Ireland. Also an awesome take on Grace O'Malley and history!

Though fair warning, by the end of this book- I'd say probably in the last 20 to 25 pages or so- I wanted to throw FISTS. I had to go on the quietest walk of my LIFE around the house at 2:30 in the morning because if I kept reading, I felt like I was going to throw up with how nervous and angry I was 😂 but that's all you need to know.

GO READ IT.

I loved this book. The characters, the plot, and the feel that I was in Ireland for a bit were some of my favorite things about it. There were parts that made me laugh. And honestly, I just want to get back in the world the author created in this one.

Fiona is an American young woman. She’s in Ireland trying to finish her dissertation for her master’s degree. But…somehow she finds herself in the ditch. In the first car she’s ever been able to rent. I loved how Rory steps in here to save her from her plight. And even better, he’s the grandson of the man Fiona has rented a cottage from. So she’ll keep seeing him.

I loved that Fiona was a strong woman. She works hard and she works on her own to do her research into the subject of her dissertation, Grace O’Malley. Even going to far as to fall into a river to get a picture. She’s definitely tenacious. And that’s a good thing.

Rory is a great guy. A modern day pirate with a peg leg. He also happens to be one of Grace’s descendants. He has some PTSD from his time in Iraq. I loved the way he had to grow in this book. He needed to learn to deal with what had happened to him. Both in Iraq and with his previous girlfriend after.

I loved the treasure hunt aspect of this one. It left me wanting to learn more about the woman who was Grace O’Malley. This book left me wanting more!

This book is part of a series of books full of adventures and sweet relationships and will capture you with its beautiful imagery and sweet dialogue.
I loved this story partly because it was based in Ireland a place, I’ve always dreamt of visiting, and partly because, the author has an amazing skill of writing books that will make your heart and head dream of far off adventures.
In this story, we are taken to the rolling hills and castles of Ireland. Where for a summer Fiona Burke is seeking to research the pirate queen Grace O’Malley. She didn’t know all that would come her way in such a short time.
This story is packed full of fun dialogue, adventures tromping around the many castles, a mysterious treasure hunt, and sweet moments of interactions between the characters.
OH, MY GOODNESS! Lisa T. Bergren’s books have so much vibrant colors and grandeur to them! She truly knows how to paint pictures, so we have no problem seeing what’s happening in our minds! This story has lots of drama, a bit of suspense, and wonderfully sweet romance.
I highly recommend you pick this book up and have a great adventure! You won’t be disappointed!

I’ve been a longtime fan of Lisa T. Bergren, beginning with the River of Time series in high school- and this novel did not disappoint.
I hadn’t read any of her stand-alone novels previously, but I was excited about the reprinting of this one. Since I have some Irish in my heritage, I was excited to read a novel by my favorite author set in Ireland. And I mean come on, with pirate queens, puppy dogs, and a beautiful love story, how could I not love it?
Her character development was fantastic. I felt kinship with Fiona and wished I could’ve spent a summer on the farm with Rory and Patrick and George.
She weaves in the history of the country and it’s people with a plot that keeps you reading because you just have to see what happens next.
If you’re looking for your next read- I would HIGHLY recommend this novel!

Living in Ireland for the Summer? Count me in! Fiona Burke has let a cottage in which to do research on Ireland's famous sixteenth-century pirate queen, Grace O'Malley, for her PhD in history. Rory O'Malley, a distance relative, is a history teacher staying with his grandfather and great uncle.

I enjoyed watching Fiona and Rory's friendship blossom. It was fun traveling to historic castles with them. Does their friendship have a chance to develop into something more than a "Summer Fling"? You'll have to read this amazing adventure to find out!

Recommend to readers who enjoy inspirational romance.

I purchased a copy directly from Mrs. Bergren. All views expressed are my honest opinion.

I'm not the biggest adult romance fan, but reading Once Upon an Irish Summer felt like a wish list come true: Irish brogue, history on an awesome pirate queen, a treasure hunt, and even puppies!

If you like Lisa's other books or want a fun, clean romance, definitely read this and the rest of the Once Upon a Summer series.

What a delightful, gentle romance! I love Lisa’s writing and so it was a treat to explore the Irish country with her. With a pirate queen at the centre of our leading ladies doctoral thesis, Fiona sets off to spend the summer in Ireland. Whilst enjoying farming life, she meets history teacher and enthusiast Rory who helps introduce her to the locals and adventure through the historical landmarks. The friendship forms slowly and the book is full of other wonderful characters who make the journey all the better! Highly recommended, it’s a five out of five on the enJOYment scale!

Life has been hectic and I have so needed a vacation! Lisa T. Bergren delivered that to me in this book. I traveled around Ireland and met a new historical character that I didn’t know about. Fiona was an interesting personality and Rory is a sweetheart. You will be intrigued by their stories, but will be captivated by the character that Fiona is researching. I want to read more about Grace O’Malley. I loved my mini vacation to Ireland between the pages of this story. I totally recommend this book.

A lovely little story set in the incredible land of Ireland. I loved the coziness that came from her use of Irish phrases and putting the brogue in the characters’ speech. Nothing to make it hard to read but enough to make you feel it, you know?

Cozy really is the best word. I felt like the characters were cozy and the theme of outing family first felt cozy somehow too. Patrick’s commitment is so admirable. I don’t know of if I could do it.

Not a fan of the bad word that was dropped. And completely unnecessary! I’m also not quite sure what to do with Bergren’s seeming fascination with girl-power. It seems kind of feminist/pushy sometimes in her stories. I don’t know.

It was a nice book that I enjoyed. Probably best for 18+
