Two princes......One airship......And a rebellion that threatens to change everything. Crown Prince Jovin cares little for his diplomatic mission, and his irritation only grows when his father invites along his little brother. As he prepared to leave in the great airship Alexandria, the rambunctious Prince Merik was forced upon him, his strange inventions in tow. Now, Jovin not only has to lead a mission he did not want, but protect Merik. Despite his hesitation to lead, Jovin is forced to step up when tragedy strikes an allied country. A rebellion has begun, and it is threatening their homeland. Suddenly, their mission for diplomacy becomes a race for their lives. Attacks follow as they attempt to rescue their allies, and even their safe haven, the Alexandria, cannot protect them from the growing danger. It is up to Jovin and his band of royal refugees to protect their people from further harm. But before they can save their countries, they have to save themselves.
A solid start to an adventurous steampunk series. I loved the chemistry of the group of main characters. Merik and literally anyone is my favorite combo of characters. Jovin got on my nerves at the beginning, but he grew on me, and I am excited to see how he grows into a leader. I was glad that the princesses’ tiff over a certain charming prince was short-lived, and I’m excited to see their sisterly bond grow. For the future of the series, I’m excited for more Merik because he’s just so darn lovable, for more Charlotte because I find her inner conflict between her instinct for peace yet the world throwing her into violence to be gripping, and to discover Hadrin and Angela’s pasts and futures. Angela stood out to me, and I anticipate her becoming more relevant, and I can’t wait for it. The adventure felt more of a castle-hopping variety than a multicultural one, as the kingdoms didn’t feel all that different from each other, and the characters didn’t have to learn any new customs to show respect for or function in the new countries. I’m excited to explore the variety of the rest of the world and see how the machinations of the villains hinder our heroes on their journey, and to see just what their nefarious plans entail. The ending was action-packed and intense and got me suitably riveted for the next installment, though I had a couple gripes with how it played out. I’m delighted this is planned to be a 5-book series because I had so much fun at our starting point and there’s so many seeds I want to see grow.
Thank you CJ Rhinehart for the review copy! I leave this review honestly and voluntarily.
I'm not afraid to say I'm biased with this book. I went in super excited to read it. I've been so used to listening to books, I almost forgot if I knew how to read a book, and seeing how it took so long. I'm trying to remain unbias with my review though!
First, this book was really good. I loved the plot and all the characters. Everyone had a lot of depth and were so complexed. The plot kept me on my toes too. With everything going on, I was on edge that something terrible was gonna happen around the corner. There were some slow parts, which I usually get through easily when listening, but when reading, it took me longer. However, even the slower parts had some cute moments.
One thing I wish was for a more diverse cast, in that, I wish there were more POC characters.
I'm really excited to see where this series grow and supporting such a wonderful person! And I'm ready to throw this book at all my friends to read! At the end of the day, it's just a lot of fun, and that's the most important thing a book can be.
I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for The Voyages of the Alexandria Book One: The Heirs of Terrison: before its re-release next month!
The Heirs of Terrison is a highly addictive and lushly descriptive action-adventure with amazing characters I absolutely adore. Readers follow Jovin and Merik, two brother princes on their diplomatic travels but what starts out as a “boring” trip (according to almost 12-year-old inventor, Merik) quickly turns into a political and revolutionary nightmare for the royals, especially the other prince and princesses that they pick up along the way. Did I mention that it takes place on an airship with lots of other steam-punk inventions throughout the world?? Plus a masquerade ball - who doesn’t love that?! The pacing and hints at what’s to come are so exciting without giving too much away. I was trying to figure out what would happen next and on my toes for the whole second half of the book.
I seriously could not put it down and I can’t wait for the next book in the series! As Captain Donald says: “What a way to begin an adventure”!
1st edition: This was a story that you love to step into and don’t want to leave. The characters were so easy to care about and I loved watching them interact and grow throughout. I can’t wait for the next one!
