With Prefect Marcus and the Black Hat Legion still trapped in Morganita fighting against the treacherous Thegn Hathus of Granate, it falls to Calidus Vulpes, Red Vigil of the Aquilan legions, to take a thousand quiet Qing infantry men and fifteen hundred unruly Gente archers to hold off the full might of Diamonte at Angosto Pass. The odds are thirty-to-one against them. Can the Aquilan junior officer hold back the enemy until Marcus and the veterans return, or will this prove to be Calidus’ final stand?
Gilbert M. Stack has been creating stories almost since he began speaking, and publishing fiction and non-fiction since 2006. A professional historian, Gilbert delights in bringing the past to life in his fiction, depicting characters who are both true to their time and empathetic with modern sensibilities. His work has appeared in several issues of Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine and is available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited. He lives in New Jersey with his wife, Michelle, and their son, Michael.
Treachery and betrayal hamper Calidus' efforts to hold the army of Diamonte away from Amatista. There is finally a confrontation between Marcus and Lord Totila. It seems that Totila's amy may abandon him and follow Marcus to try and save Amatista. There are good combat scenes in which magic plays a major part.
A fine entry in Mr. Stack's Legionaire series. I downloaded many volumes of this series free through Kindle Unlimited.
