Devlin & Falco #2

Gone Too Far

Rate this book
This second entry in USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb’s Devlin & Falco series proves that sometimes the past is best left forgotten.

As veteran detectives of the Birmingham Police Department, Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco have seen it all. So when the city’s new hotshot deputy district attorney turns up dead as part of a double homicide, the partners immediately get to work.

But this is no ordinary case. Devlin and Falco quickly link the murdered DDA to one of their own: former BPD detective Sadie Cross. But Sadie’s fractured memory is yet another puzzle to decipher, as she only recalls bits and pieces of her violent past…a past that may hold clues to the motive behind the murders.

As the group slowly begins to unearth the truth, they soon discover that the more secrets are revealed, the more fatal the consequences.

Gone Too Far (Devlin & Falco #2) by Debra Webb

Almost a year after the events of book #1 of the Devlin & Falco series we now have book #2. The duo have gone from Devlin thinking new partner, Falco, will never work out because of their extreme differences to the duo being best friends, excellent work partners and spending the off time together as a little platonic family for Devlin's fourteen year old daughter, Tori. Things are so much better than a year ago, when Tori unrealistically viewed her mother as the most evil, horrible, vile creature that could walk this earth. I was not looking forward to enduring Tori again but she's in a better place emotionally, at the beginning of the book. Teenagers, shaking my head and rolling my eyes!!!

Two serious situations hit the duo hard, at the same time. Tori is somehow involved in an incident where a classmate is critically injured and rumors swirl that the injury is her fault or the fault of her best friend, who was standing right next to her. On the work front, Devlin and Falco are called to a business where two men have been executed. Devlin is not allowed to be in on the investigation of how the school girl was injured because of Tori's role in the situation and they aren't the leads on the murder case anymore when it taken away from them by higher ups...they are left doing grunt work for those in charge of the investigation.

I like the team at this point in their relationship. The awkwardness is gone from the first book and they are settled into working very well together, like a long married couple. Sadie, a former undercover cop, now private investigator, is back and she's working the angles of the murder case, due to her connection with one of the dead men. I felt like I needed to make a graph, a very detailed graph, to figure out all the links of everyone in the story. I didn't do it so, instead, the whole mess of what was going on was in my head like several tangled up balls of yarn, and I'm not sure it's at all plausible that so many people could be connected in the ways that they are in this book. So I had to just throw that out to the wind (maybe that's why my yarn got tangled up) and just go with the story and accept that, once again, like in the last book, the world of Devlin and Falco is very small, indeed.

This book just took off, there was little chance to catch your breath. Detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco from the Birmingham (Alabama) police department are still partners about a year after the events in the previous book (Trust No One) when they get drawn into a very complex case. The Assistant DA, Asher Walsh, is found dead in an upmarket tobacconist and bar - shot through the back of the head along with the owner, Leo Kurtz. There is no apparent motive although drugs are suspected to be involved. When they into Walsh’s activities they learn he was working on something with a former BPD officer, now PI, Sadie Cross, and seek her help in the investigation.

Sadie is still trying to put herself back together 3 years after her cover was blown on undercover operation in which she infiltrated the Osorio Mexican drug cartel. Sadie has huge gaps in her memory after ‘losing’ a period of months from her life before being abandoned, injured and emaciated under a railway bridge. She is still trying to work out what exactly happened to her but agrees to help the detectives through her contacts.

Also in the mix is Devlin’s daughter, 13 year old Tori, who is having a hard time at school. One of the bullies fell down the stairs and was seriously injured. Tori and two of her friends were there and they, too, cannot remember exactly how the fall happened. But of course they are all under suspicion. Then the girl dies.

These three strands get drawn inexorably closer together until it all becomes one story. More or less. In the course of the investigation more people die and some stunning revelations are made. Sadie learns more about her past and is shocked by what she learns. What emerges from the murk is a vast criminal conspiracy that reaches into some very high levels indeed.

While I really enjoyed reading this, it was very fast paced, I’m wondering if it was a little too much. There were a lot of characters and plot lines and I had some trouble keeping track of them, uncharacteristically so. Kudos to the author for keeping all these balls in the air. Nevertheless it was a cracking story and I will be keen to see what’s next for Devlin and Falco. Thanks to Netgalley, Thomas & Mercer and Debra Webb for providing a copy to review. My opinions are my own.

In this second of the series, we return to the city of Birmingham, AL and the lives of Major Investigations Division Detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco. Devlin and Falco have just landed a double homicide at a tobacco shop and bar where the owner, Leo Kurtz, and the new DDA (Deputy District Attorney) Asher Walsh have been bound and executed. There is no apparent connection to the two so they have their work cut out for them. Then before they get started good, the DEA steps in and takes lead on the case. Apparently Walsh has been investigating a major Cartel drug ring with ties in the city. Life has been tough on Kerri's family over the last year since her niece was murdered. Things become worse when her daughter is tied in some way to an accident at school where another student fell down the stairs in front of Tori and two friends. Accident or was she pushed? Sadie Cross, a former detective dealing with lost memory issues while working undercover, is a now PI, was friends with Asher and is interested in helping Devlin and Falco find his killer. This is another story where those with power and money feel above the law. The question is who is behind everything? The author does a great job with the mystery and tying the story together as in fitting pieces of a puzzle together with some surprise components. I am enjoying this series!

I just recently read Debra Webb for the first time in her new series book one “Trust No One” and was very impressed so was thrilled when I was given the chance to read the second installment, “Gone Too Far.” Birmingham police detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are back and they are on fire. When the city’s DA is found dead they pull in the hardened former BPD detective Sadie Cross from the last book for help and things go south quickly from there. The case is complicated and multi-faceted, and Kerri and Luke are unsure who to trust. To make matters worse. Keri’s daughter, Tori, is involved in a suspicious “mean-girl” attack at school that threatens her future.

This synopsis does not do the book justice as this book is one of the best thrillers I’ve read this year. There were quite a few characters to keep up with, but all in all it was not difficult to follow. It was especially rewarding to learn Sadie Cross’s back story which is an important part of the book. I eagerly await the next installment of this series. Many, many thanks to #netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book. I gave it four and half stars rounded up to five! #GoneTooFar

This is second in the series. I didn’t read Trust No one which was the first in this series but read some reviews to catch up
Detective Kerri Devlin and her partner Detective Luke Falco members of the Birmingham Alabama Police Department assigned to the Major Investigations Division are investigating a double homicide of Leo Kurta a shop owner and ‘hot shot’ Deputy DA Asher Walsh (Hmmm what was he doing there?).
While just getting started on this investigation, Kerri Devlin gets call from Brighton Academy that her daughter Tori is involved in an incident at school that left another student in critical condition. The student Brendal Meyer is a bully and while Tori, Sarah and Alice on the staircase hurrying as they were late to class, Brendal mouthed off to them. The next thing, Brendal has fallen backwards down the stairs ~ or was she pushed? The girls all claim they cannot remember what happened.
Later Tori mentions to her mother that she has had other situations where she has had memory loss and it seems to follow after Alice has served her and her friends cookies. Alice is new to the school. She is living with relatives as both her parents recently died. She was at another school but it didn’t work out.

While this is going on Devlin and Falco need to focus on the double homicide.

Former detective Sadie Cross a character from the first book has made an appearance and we are learning more her loss of memory after she went undercover in a Mexican drug cartel.
Hmmm does that loss of memory have a connection?
What seems like isolated situation might be related. Story is packed with so many characters. (I was grateful for the high light feature with Kindle, as I was trying to piece together what was going on with these cases I kept highlighting and then when I reviewed my notes, I said ~ “Ah Ha!”

The pages had me reading at record speed that I was getting whiplash. (I can read fast but sometime miss important details and go~ wait a minute and have to reread.) I liked Kerry’s comment when she was finding out the whole story and said she had to remind herself to breathe! Yikes that was me! Reading the end of this story!
It was a WOW read for me ~ I should give 5 starts as I save 5 stars for amazing reads. Hmm this was sure close to an amazing read for me!!!
I am looking forward to the next in the series but my hearts states ~ Best for you to …WAIT a bit!!

Enjoyed reading the ‘Acknowledgements’ but still amazed that author Debra Webb is such a creative writer!!

Many thanks to Net Galley, Thomas & Mercer, and the author for a chance to read and review this book. All opinions are expressed voluntarily.

Debra Webb is a bestselling author of about 150 novels and the saddest part is I haven’t read a single book by this author. Thanks to Barbara Schultz at Goodreads whose review led me to check this out in Net Galley and glad that finally, I did read at least one book by this fantastic author.

Gone Too Far is book #2 in Devlin & Falco series. I haven’t read book #1 but book #2 can be read perfectly as a stand-alone.

Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are called into investigating a double homicide, but the identity of one of the victims throws a spanner in the works. The murder of hotshot Asher Walsh, Deputy District Attorney is no small affair and the detectives know they are up against more than just a drug deal gone wrong. Devlin also has the additional burden of handling the sensitive issue of bullying at her daughter Tori’s school which has led to a critical situation.

The pressure of handling a high-profile case and her daughter’s problems have been dealt with wonderfully by the author, Devlin does come across as a sensible mother as well as an intuitive detective. Her partner Falco gives the required impetus in an investigation that has so many layers. Drugs, the Mexican cartel, amnesia, bullying, bad parenting, dysfunctional families, murder, and mayhem, so many subjects get discussed in this mind-boggling thriller. The story was like a secret puzzle box, as each jumbled pieces begins to take shape, another slice is revealed in this intriguing web of suspense

Sadie’s attempt to reconstruct her lost past and the details about her trials and abuse were sad and sympathetic. It makes one think about the sacrifices the undercover agents do to get to the criminals, they almost pay for it with their sanity. I would have dearly loved to have a few chapters in Falco's POV coz his past seems to as interesting as Sadie’s life. Hopefully in the next book in the series.

Looking forward to reading more books by this author!

I enjoyed Ms. Webb’s first story in this series, Trust No One. There was some melodrama and the introduction of characters, but at the heart of the story I thought Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco had potential.

Gone Too Far opened roughly a year later. Be sure and not confuse this story for Ms. Webb’s Too Far Gone. The problem was I knew little more about Devlin and Falco. They were still partners. When not working together, he came to her house for meals. He had a decent relationship with Tori, Devlin’s daughter, but other than that, there was nothing new about their relationship. Their relationship did not move forward, it simply existed.

Besides a big name homicide, the partners turned to Sadie Cross, once again, for information. And more.

Kerri’s daughter, Tori, was in serious trouble, too. But the woo woo and bewitchment was a bit too much for me. I thought this secondary story was very strange and simply a red herring.

There were multiple reminders that Kerri felt she was not a good parent. I thought if Tori already suffered severe trust issues at this age, I couldn’t imagine what problems Devlin would have when she reached 15, 16 or 17 years of age.

I like Devlin and I like Falco. I am just not sure if I am going to continue with this series.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Thomas and Mercer Publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This riveting second book in the Devlin and Falco series had me on the edge of my seat as the complicated and multi-layered plot was masterfully unraveled by author Debra Webb. Definitely a suspense thriller, the main characters are Birmingham detectives Katie Devlin and Luke Falco who are called in to investigate a double homicide. One of the victims is a deputy district attorney, Asher Walsh who is somehow connected to former detective Sadie Cross. Sadie had left the force after an undercover operation with the Osorio drug cartel went way south and she ended up with a fragmented memory and nightmares. To add to the plot, Katie’s daughter Tori is involved in an incident at her school that resulted in the injury of a “mean girl.” So many interesting twists and turns were in this book! I enjoyed learning more about Katie’s family life and how devoted she is to Tori and I really liked getting to know Sadie. She is broken because of her past, but she is not irredeemable. The characters made the story, in my opinion, because they were varied, active and so realistic that I expected them to leave the written page and share with me the secrets of what was going to happen next. There was lots of fast-paced action and plenty of cerebral detective work going on as well. Although this is the second book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone. Fans of suspense thrillers and police procedurals will want to get their hands on this book and devour its mesmerizing pages!

Be prepared to be blown away by this book. This is second in this series so please be sure to read the first book before this one.
Gone too Far is by far one the best books I've read. It will definitely keep you on the edge of your chair and if you start don't plan to put the book down until the end. Debra Webb is a phenomenal writer but this book just raised the bar higher. The storyline is like no other. I experienced so many emotions while reading I feel like I have a book hangover. Im emotionally wiped. Dont expect teasers or anything from me. All I have to say is read the series.

Action packed

Deborah Webb is a great author and each book she's written is better than the previous one.
She wrote with so many unexpected events took place. Brainwashing, murder and so much more. All I can say about the ending is you need to read the book to find out, I don't want to write spoilers.

Detectives Kerry Devlin and Luke Falco are called in to investigate the death of two men. Both were bound to chairs and executed with a shot in the back of the head. One man was the owner of the store they were in .... the other was the city's brand new hot-shot deputy district attorney.

The detectives find a link to a former detective, Sadie Cross. But Cross' past life is just as big a mystery as the killings. And she may hold the clues to solve these murders.

Sometimes, it may be better to let the past stay in the past.

i have read several books by this author and never been disappointed. I've come to expect tightly woven plots, solidly drawn characters, and a modicum of credibility. In GONE TOO FAR, the author puts together two plots ... one of the murders... and another of Kerri's teenage daughter. I like seeing not only the professional side, but a personal side as well, making the characters more than cardboard cutouts.

There's plenty of suspects, with ulterior motives, .... but who's the real villain here? Twists and turns lead to an unexpected, surprising ending.

Many thanks to the author / Thomas & Mercer / Amazon Publishing / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily. opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This is the second book in Webb's Devlin and Falco series. The two veteran Birmingham PD officers are assigned the case when the new deputy DA is found dead in a double homicide and a conspiracy must be unraveled. Webb once again writes a story filled with elusive mystery and a host of characters who are not what they seem. On top of the high profile case, Devlin's daughter Tori is caught up in a tragic case of bullying that tests her devotion to her job and her daughter. Loved Sadie's character and the mystery and many layers of Luke Falco and the dynamic between the two partners. I recommend reading book one first to experience the most out of this story. Definitely worth the read!

I have a feeling it's a good idea to read Trust No One before reading Gone Too Far. I spent the first 20% of Gone Too Far feeling as though a tsunami of characters had hit me, and I couldn't figure out who anyone was or what was going on. Also, the characters were sometimes called by their first names, and sometimes by their last names, which added to my confusion. I wanted so much to know more about the characters, other than their names, and that they were hiding secrets. Like I wrote previously, it's probably a good idea to read the #1 book first!

But then! But then! I started figuring out who everyone was and I absolutely enjoyed the rest of the book!! It was definitely mysterious and twisty-turny. The characters were complex but once I figured out who each one was, I found them all to be compelling. Falco was my favorite character, hands down.

I hope the next book will have fewer secrets but I'm eager to read it, even if it doesn't!

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of Gone Too Far.

Writing the same Book Report for all three of the Devlin & Falco books I’ve read over the past three days.

Decided I wanted to read more Debra Webb after enjoying the first in her latest series (Finley O’Sullivan). I figured, why not? I enjoyed that “free” Kindle read, and I’m still in my “free” 30-day trial of a Kindle Unlimited subscription, and Devlin & Falco is set in a city in which I lived for 12 years (Birmingham, Alabama), and have spent time in off and on my entire life.

Short version: Enjoyable enough, but awfully formulaic. To the point of me being reminded how I couldn’t stand Harlequin Romances back when I was younger (way, way back, like, high school young) because they were just so predictable to me. And I say this even with Ms Webb seemingly trying her darndest to make the mysteries proper quite convoluted-y. Which, of course, is not something of which I’m any sort of fan.

I think these books warrant 2.5 stars, but because I didn’t feel any compulsion to stop reading them I’m giving them 3 stars and noting for the record that I shouldn’t bother with any of her other works.

And oh, yeah, PS:
That whole use of LT as shorthand for lieutenant really, really bugged. I get that it was supposed to be in-crowd slang, but it just didn't come off the way intended. Also, there was a great deal of lack of subject-verb agreement in these books. Why in the world would the publisher not spend the pennies on the dollar (literally, you can look up the rates) for a copy editor for books by such a wildly successful author?

What a great crime thriller! This is the 2nd installment in the Devlin & Falco series by this author. Kerry Devlin and Luke Falco are best friends and detectives for the Birmingham, AL police department. The main story line has them investigating a double homicide at a local bar, the victims are the Assistant DA and the bar owner with no obvious motive. There are a few other sub plots happening as well, creating an intricate and multilayered story. I enjoyed the camaraderie between Devlin and Falco and the many twists and turns kept me flipping the pages. Thank you Netgalley, Thomas & Mercer, and the author for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. Available to read now!

Devlin & Falco.

Became one of my favorite series. Even better than "Trust no One" (Devlin & Falco#1).
I absolutely enjoyed this book at all. Catch my eyes till the first chapter.
With no doubt, this book is one of the best thrillers I’ve read this year.
The protagonists, Devlin & Falco, surprise me again, keeping the same pattern as in book 1 of the series.
I liked the development of Detective Sadie Cross, wich in this work wasn't only a supporting role, but a fundamental part of the plot.
What a amazing and surprising ending! 😨
Waiting Anxiously for "Can't Go Back"(Devlin & Falco#3)
Thanks a lot to Debra Webb for developing this excellent work!

I first heard of Debra Webb when the first book in this series (Devlin & Falco) when it was available as an Amazon First Reads. I absolutely love police procedural novels so when I was offered the opportunity by the publishers to read Gone too Far in exchange my honest review I jumped at the chance! Gone Too Far picks up with of our detectives from Birmingham Police Department. They get to work on the case of a murder involving a new attorney and immediately find out there is so much to answer for. Webb created a realistic universe and I enjoyed the story. If there are more in this series I will pick it up for sure! Her writing is suspenseful and I had to keep going to find all the answers!

Didn’t like this as much as the first.
The story was good but had aspects that just were not as interesting

There is still no romance which is disappointing
Since it’s a romantic suspense. It’s def more of two partners and friends and although I like to see them get closer i would like to see some actual romances and intimacy.

Audio is good 3.5

The book was difficult to get into at first, it was slow in my opinion and a tad dry. However I continued on, and a few chapters in I was hooked. I only became more hooked as I got further into the book, and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a mystery book, especially one with a huge plot twist.

There are two things about this author that don´t work for me: her teenager characters and her limited pool of characters.

It was the same with the previous book. The teenagers are unbelievable, and their role is simply to carry on some angst. They are described as clever and responsible girls, but they don´t act like it. Nor do it their families. The author tells us how caring and loving the families are, but they simply let the girls roam around without seeing or even talking to them in a few days and that is supposedly normal. I don´t think so. Even less when your aunt is investigating your coworkers for murder.

The other problem is that all the characters have a more or less important role in the suspense. All of them. It feels contrite and forced.

So that said, I think the idea behind the suspense was good. The past came to haunt the characters. And the way the author writes is appealing. I couldn´t stop reading. A pity the end was so hard to believe.

So, this story left me with a bittersweet aftertaste. It wasn´t a bad story but I had the same problems with this author approach as I had the first time around. Maybe her style is not for me.

I really like this one I find all this authors books have fast paced plots and engaging characters. This author just had a way of pacing a story and I find her writing is just as good as kava or coban

Oh My Goodness, Gone Too Far by Debra Webb is one of the best suspense thrillers this year! This is the second in the series for Devlin & Falco and once I started, I could not stop reading until it was the end. I enjoy the dynamics of Detective Kerri Devlin and her partner Detective Luke Falco with the Major Investigations Division in the Birmingham, AL police department. Kerri's daughter Tori is featured in this book and the story is riveting!
I won't post spoilers, but the many elements of this story that manage to intersect and weave together are amazing. Devlin and Falco arrive at the scene of an execution-style homicide and discover the new DDA Asher Walsh has been murdered along with Leo, the owner of an established and exclusive tobacco bar. Before Devlin can really get into her investigation, she is called and asked to come to Tori's school. Kerri arrives at Brighton to find out that Tori is implicated in the malicious accident of a fellow student. Tori is adamant that she did not cause the fall which leaves mean-girl Brendal in critical condition. There is something about Tori's demeanor that concerns Kerri. What information is Tori withholding?
Sadie Cross is a major character in this book. We learn more about her tormented past when she was deep undercover within a drug cartel in Mexico. The fractured dreams, memories, and frightening glimpses of that time in her life haunt her each night. Could the secret chanting, rituals, and drugs explain how she became invisible? It all adds up to explode in a conspiracy of silence and murder that has been going on for several years.

Gone Too Far by Debra Webb
Devlin & Falco #2

I have a feeling that this is a series better read in order and I did not read the first book in the series leaving me feeling that I didn’t really know the main characters as well as I should have. I ended up skimming to find out the gist of the story but must admit I did not read word for word – and there were a lot of words in this book with over 400 pages. I felt that the story could have been edited down a good bit to make it tighter and flow at a faster pace.

This book had more than one storyline that eventually overlapped by the end of the book. It begins with a gut-wrenching prologue set five days before the story picks up in real time. Next up is a murder to be solved and that is for Devlin & Falco to sleuth out. Add in an issue with Tori, Kerri Devlin’s daughter, that is much deeper and more deadly than expected. AND, there is another thread of a woman who was an undercover agent who has lost part of her memory and her story also overlaps the others. There are a number of questionable characters, red herrings, evil doers, problems to solve, murderers to suss out, and…more. The threads of the various plots didn’t come together till the end and some of them left me scratching my head.

So, this book is a mixed bag for me. I could see the way it was plotted and the way the story was being told would work for many but it did not draw me in, hold my attention, have me reading and hanging on every word, and eager to read the next book in the series. I had trouble relating to the characters and am not sure if that, again, is due to not having read the first book in the series.

Did I enjoy this book? Not so much, it was “okay”
Would I read more by this author? Maybe, if the blurb really caught my attention

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC – This is my honest review.

This is the second in the Devlin and Falco series, and I have to admit up front that I haven’t read the first one, but I don’t think it mattered all that much. The author does a good job of setting the scene, introducing Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco as a pair of detectives in Birmingham, Alabama, on a squad called in to investigate crimes of a significant and sensitive nature. The murder of a deputy district attorney definitely qualifies, but when it starts to become clear drugs are involved, the DEA quickly take over the case and Devlin and Falco are sidelined.

This isn’t such a bad thing, as Kerri Devlin is quickly distracted by a personal tragedy unfolding, when a friend of her daughter’s suffers a terrible fall at school and Kerri’s daughter is suspected of being involved. I admit I spotted the ‘big twist’ about Alice’s true identity almost the first moment it was brought up, but we had to wait to discover it when former undercover agent Sadie Cross gets a look at Alice.

Honestly, this is more the Devlin and Cross series, at least from this book. Scenes are pretty much exclusively from either Devlin or Cross’s perspective, with the occasional one thrown in from Devlin’s daughter. I don’t think we really got a look at Falco’s POV at all; he’s relegated to being a nice, supportive sidekick, which from reviews, I don’t think was the case in the first book, so if you’re a big Falco fan after that one, you might feel a bit let down here.

I actually really enjoyed it, however. I liked Devlin, I particularly liked Sadie Cross, and I’d definitely be interested in reading more in this series. Five stars for a good read.
