Alexander Strange lives and works aboard a fishing trawler in Naples, Florida writing about news of the weird. His laid-back lifestyle is disrupted when a feisty author of conspiracy books insists he investigate the death of her brother in Key West. Her name is Silver, and the cops think her brother's death was an accident, a scuba diving mishap caused by nitrogen narcosis. But Silver doesn't buy it. She believes he was murdered, and the motivation behind his killing is far more noxious. When she tells Alexander her brother’s last words to her were, “I found a mermaid,” it’s a story too good for a weird-news reporter to resist. But when the bullets start flying and the sharks start circling, he realizes he’s gotten into something literally over his head.

Alexander Strange is not your typical journalist. His job is to uncover strange events. His off beat (weird) sense of humour is delightful especially when it comes to Mona his pirate mannequin, Spock his lifetime cut out friend and his dog Fred who wears a translator. Yep a translator that converts his barks to human language. You never know what will come out of his mouth. Living and working the leisurely life on his trawler. This quirky guy also seems to be a magnet for trouble that ends up in strange twists. When Silver's brother dies she seeks Alexander's help since her gut tells her he was murdered after his body goes missing. Alexander and his friends set out on a journey to find out the truth about his death. And oh what a journey! Vampire sharks, dolphins, mermaids, monkeys and flying bullets. Great appreciation to Hidden gems for introducing me to this series! Great story and characters. I do have one very large complaint, however, I found my self stopping reading to price airline tickets from Chicago to Key West. Oh boy. It might happen. This was a great read, I highly recommend it.
