In this collection you'll find three eerie stories full of fortune telling and voodoo. In the first story you'll come to know not to go into a voodoo shop if you're a bad person. The second story is about not to harm a voodoo shop owner. In the third and last story you'll get an uncanny goodbye. The stories were okay but nothing too extraordinary. The cover was quite excellent but the tales couldn't completely come up with that. Something for Alatorre fans.
No spoilers. 4 1/2 stars. This little book was a marvelous find! It is made up of 2 short stories and an epilogue, which is really another story...
I've rated all the stories individually. All are connected to a little street-front voodoo shop in New Orleans...
The streets of New Orleans have a rich and somewhat spooky history...
On a side alley near Bourbon Street is a little voodoo shop run by a leathery old Jamaican medium who is a mambo (witch)...
Her shop windows are painted with Mardi Gras masks and ouiji boards and smells of incense.
For the right price...
She will tell you what you want to know using her crystal ball, tarot cards, or Ouiji board...
THE RENDERING 5 stars Ashley entered the shop to ask the mambo if her current boyfriend would ask her to marry him. The mambo said there must first be a rendering so a bridge can be crossed. A slow rendering for a big bridge...
COUNTENANCE 4 stars A big, muscular man with many tattoos barged into the voodoo shop demanding answers to 3 questions. He discovered too late: Be careful what you ask for...
EPILOGUE 5 stars. Marcus was taking Janine on a walking tour of the Big Easy with its ghost tours, voodoo, and aboveground cemeteries when they passed the voodoo shop on a side street...
I enjoyed these 3 stories rich with New Orleans culture. Don't let the size fool you. This book is big on atmosphere and very suspenseful. These mosaic stories are woven together in a manner similar to THE GULP by Alan Baxter.
Two short stories revolving around a voodoo fortune teller. While both stories were easy interesting reading; hardly horror stories. There is an epilogue that ties together both stories with additional info. Also I’m not sure that 2 short stories count as an anthology.
Really liked stories #1 and #3, but #2 seemed 'off' somehow ~ not quite sure how to explain it . . . The stories do draw you in ~ they leave you with that wonderful 'creepy' feeling you like to get from horror stories ~ the last one does end abruptly, but it kind of works! I'd definitely recommend these ~ a quick read ~ intense ~ good (but not great, for me!)
Forgot to review this little gem in time for the last goodie of 2020! Three short stories of New Orleans more interesting dark side. Rich little Voudou, candlelit shop and it's most foolish of characters to close that door to the other side. With the help of the old Queen, of course... Keep writing Mr.Alatorre! Mwah!
I believe all the stories were connected and they were great. I have read several of Dan Alatorre's books. I love them all and this one is no exception.
Mr. Alatorre, if you read your reviews I love your books and I have more downloaded on my kindle to read.
Loved this chilling collection. I can't wait to visit New Orleans and you've made the creepy atmosphere come to life. I thought the cover was especially good too.
Dan Allatorre’s second short book in the Dark Passages series focuses on mediums.
The Rendering
Ashley visits a medium to determine if her boyfriend will ask her to marry him. She didn’t get the answer she wanted and was told she was evil and had to pay a price.
Countenance
A big man visits a medium and asks if his partner can be trusted and if he would get away with his crimes. The medium provides answers and he leaves. He discovers the medium will not let him get away with his crime towards her.
Epilogue
Janine met Marcus in New Orleans. She needed to get away as she felt something was missing. They tour the city and view the burned down voodoo house. The medium was supposedly in the building as it burned or was she?
Received as a free copy from the author, this is an honest review. From the outside it seems a quaint little shop dealing in the voodoo arts that is harmless fun. But step inside and you'll discover that if you harbor darker intentions; the price you pay will be a stark one... beware. Highly recommended.
These three short chillers by Dan Alatorre offer a nice creepy sensation for your reading pleasure.
The Rendering, Countenance, and Epilogue have a lovely Twilight Zone flavor and even if you think you know where the story is going you won’t be able to stop reading. I received a free copy but my review is honest and voluntary. A very enjoyable anthology from a good author.
I absolutely loved the addition to the Dark Passages collection. Dark Voodoo is an eerie, fast-paced, unputdownable collection of dark tales. The Rendering and Countenance with an incredibly chilling and surprising Epilogue come together for an intense, well-written, enjoyable read. Highly recommend.
These 3 short chilling thrillers by Dan Alatorre are very intense and chilling but you can’t help but to read more ! I received these free but am leaving an honest review voluntarily!
Three more short horror stories that do not disappoint. This book is a quick read and really enjoyable. Three stories dealing with voodoo, and don't forget, you must always pay the price. Enjoy.
