The Magnolia Sisters #3

The Last Carolina Sister

Rate this book
In Magnolia, North Carolina, love might be waiting right next door…

Meredith Ventner knows a wounded creature when she sees one. Though her temporary new neighbor may be—on the surface at least—a successful, drop-dead gorgeous doctor, she recognizes the deep hurt Ryan Sorensen is carrying, and it’s catnip to her soul. But even though Meredith is the youngest, scrappiest and single-est of Magnolia’s most famous sisters, she’s committed to expanding the animal shelter on her newly inherited farm. She can’t waste her energy on a man who’s only passing through town.

Ryan is hoping that after a month of small-town living he’ll be healed enough to return to his busy ER. His injured leg isn’t half as painful as his guilt from the tragedy he’s trying to forget. Yet somehow, helping feisty, tenderhearted Meredith care for her menagerie is making him question his career-first priorities. Here in this quirky small town another future is coming into view, but can he change his life, and open his heart, to claim it?

The Last Carolina Sister brought back the emotion, whimsy, and fun of the first book in this series and what was lacking in the second book. These characters were both emotionally scarred and a bit closed off, but an incident brings them together and they soon both find it hard to be apart. Author Michelle Major did a good job of developing these characters, of letting their relationship developed organically, and showing growth in both characters letting them let their guards down and someone else in. I was hooked from the first chapter until the last, my biggest complaint…I NEEDED an epilogue, not because the story wasn’t complete but because I’m a nosey b*tch!

Meredith Ventner’s life was turned upside down once again when famed local artist Niall Reed passes away and she finds out she is his biological child and she has two half-sisters, one of which lives in the small town she does, Magnolia, North Carolina, and someone she actually bullied as a disgruntled teenager. To top it off the news coming had her Dad, the man who raised her as his own, leaving town and her brothers not understanding her new relationship with her half-sisters. To top it off SHE doesn’t understand her relationship with her half-sisters, but she does know she respects and loves them and will do anything for them. When someone falls at her animal rescue and needs medical attention, she goes to the house closest to her where she knows a doctor from D.C. is residing for a couple of months. There she finds a crabby man who’s physical appearance takes her breath away but she doesn’t have time for men between her job, the rescue, her online college classes, applying for grant money, and helping her sisters try and settle their biological father’s estate, her life is overbooked…but it’s nice to dream.

Ryan Sorensen is recovering from a leg injury he sustained when a gang altercation occurred in his busy D.C. emergency room. Still hurting physically and mentally, a colleague offered up his cottage in North Carolina for a sabbatical and Ryan has enjoyed the peace and quiet even if it does give him too much time to think about the events that has him hiding out. When a woman comes knocking on his door telling him she needs his help for someone with a head injury he unwillingly agrees to go with her and immediately finds he enjoys her company along with the company of her menagerie of pets and rescue animals. Soon Ryan finds himself immersed in the small town, being asked to volunteer with a mobile health clinic, spending time volunteering at Meredith’s pet rescue, and enjoying life something he wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to do again.

I loved the complexity of these characters and the fact that while they had an immediate attraction to one another they both held back for various reasons. They had to work towards a physical relationship and even then they were upfront about an end date, but it was easy to see that both were harboring growing feelings for the other. They communicated very well which is why despite a misstep by Ryan they were able to overcome it and of course Meredith had to also realize that being stubborn because of something he did wasn’t the smartest thing in the world for her.

It was wonderful to see the sisters continue to grow their friendship and relationship and how much they really had grown to depend on one another. In addition, I was so happy to see Meredith’s dad who raised her and one of her brothers come around and begin to make amends.

Filled with laughter, good times, emotion, and relationships of all kinds, The Last Carolina Sister was a fantastic ending to an exceptional series.

Ryan is a doctor who finds himself in Magnolia as he tries to rehabilitate from an injury and come to terms with the events that led to that injury. All he wants to do is to be left alone but when his neighbor Meredith comes knocking and needs assistance, she isn’t about to leave without him.

After having her entire world rocked to its core Meredith has forged a relationship with the half-sisters she didn’t know she had and is focused on saving the animal rescue farm. Meredith isn’t looking for love or relations as Meredith as she has been let down by so many people in her past and choose to give all the love she has to her animals.

What started out as Meredith and Ryan becoming close because of the animals escalates into something much deeper. Ryan is only in town for a visit while she can’t imagine living anywhere else and the pasts they both need to overcome are only a few of the challenges facing this couple is they are to have the happy ever after they both deserve.

Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of THE LAST CAROLINA SISTER (Book 3 of the Magnolia Sisters) by Michelle Major in exchange for an honest review. Meredith Ventner runs a private animal shelter in the small town Magnolia, North Carolina. Meredith uses her plans to improve the shelter to distract her from her personal troubles: the distance in her relationships with her family, her loneliness, and her inability to seek out relationships because of a past trauma. When the local paper does an article on the shelter and classifies Meredith as a lonely spinster desperate for love, the male portion of the population begins to seek her out. One such encounter leads Meredith to seek the medical expertise of her temporary new neighbor, Dr. Ryan Sorenson. Ryan, who is recovering from a recent tragedy, finds himself drawn, unwillingly, to Meredith and the animal shelter. Ryan resists connecting with Meredith, the animals, and the small town’s citizens, but they’re all kind of irresistible.

I liked this book and enjoyed the story. I recommend this book to fans of romance stories featuring damaged characters, animals, small towns, and personal growth.

The Last Carolina Sister is the last book in the Magnolia Sister trilogy. It's the perfect ending to the series about love and family connections and support.

Avery, Carrie and Meredith are half sisters who never knew they were sisters until their father died and mentioned them in his will. Avery and Carrie found love in the first two books of the trilogy and now it's Meredith's turn.

Meredith runs an animal rescue and shelter on the farm that she inherited. She dreams of making it larger and offering classes but is so convinced that she is a failure at life and that everyone knows it, she just doesn't try because she's scared of failing again. When she meets, Ryan, an ER doctor from DC, she is drawn to him but knows that he couldn't be interested in anyone like her. Ryan is taking a leave from his job to heal from a gunshot wound that happened in the ER. He can't wait to get back to the big city but the longer he stays in Magnolia, the more he is drown to small city life and to Meredith. Can they both learn to forget their pasts and have a future together.

This is feel good romance with a happily ever after ending. It was interesting, easy and fun to read. I've enjoyed the series and getting to know more about these sisters in Magnolia. Great romance!

Thanks to the author for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.

The Last Carolina Sister: A Novel (The Magnolia Sisters Book 3)
5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Last Carolina Sister by Michelle Major is the 3rd book in her Magnolia Sisters series and my favorite. This book was a page turner from the very beginning. Michelle Major is one of my favorite authors. I love the way she writes and her characters. The characters are all realistic and described so well I feel like i know them.
I loved the romance between Meredith and Ryan. Meredith and her animal rescue and Ryan the Er doctor. I enjoyed watching the relationships between each grow and develop. You just know these two were made for each other and it's so fun to watch as they figure that out, too! I highly recommend this book and all of her other books if you love heartwarming small town romance. You really can't go wrong no matter which book of hers you pick up. *******Disclosure*******

I have not read any of the previous books in this series. I have to say, the author does a good job of giving you some background information about what happened in the previous books. Having this backstory helped me get into the story easily. And, what a backstory there is! Talk about secrets and drama!
All in all, a nice romance that I really enjoyed. Many laughable moments. I even shed a few tears along the way. The animal antics kept me smiling. Engaging, sweet romance between the two main characters, Meredith and Ryan.
Looking for a comfort series to get into? I highly recommend The Magnolia Sisters series.

Loved Meredith and Ryan. Meredith is more than interested in running her wounded furbabies rescue but when her new neighbor moves in, who looks wounded her soul goes out to him. Ryan is an ER doctor whom is on a mental/physical break from his busy ER. He is only in Magnolia for a month, but soon a friendship develops between Meredith and him. Meredith is on the reserve side, she has had some bad luck in the dating scene, but soon they can't deny the chemistry that they share. Ryan is holding out on a secret of his life and will it ruin their HEA?

Loved both of these characters, both are a little broken but perfect for each other. Loved all of the furry critters, but then I love all animals! A great small town romance with plenty of laughs. This is part of a series but the author ties in the other books perfect.

This is the third book in a series but can be read as a standalone. This was a heartwarming story. Ryan is in Magnolia trying to rest and heal after being stabbed while working as a doctor in a big city ER. Meredith is living in her hometown of Magnolia and is running an animal rescue centre. Neither of them are interested in a relationship but are still drawn to each other. Can they make a relationship work and will Ryan decide to trade in the big city for a small town? I loved the adorable animals in Meredith’s rescue centre - especially the goats. This was a great book about overcoming your fears and learning to trust yourself. How do you say goodbye to a series you love? I have fallen in love with the town of Magnolia and the three sisters who live there. I was excited that this book would be Meredith’s story! She’s always spunky and helps animals with her rescue. There’s a lot more to her than everyone thinks and I loved that. Her book is my favorite of the series! Thank you Miss Major for creating such wonderful characters, along with a special town I long to visit.

This is a lovely series to read. It’s heartwarming and will have you wanting to take a trip to the town of Magnolia! I give this 5 stars.

Terrific conclusion to the Magnolia Sisters trilogy. Avery, Carrie, and Meredith are half-sisters who discovered their connection after the death of their father. Left to deal with their father's financial mismanagement, they've spent the last six months restoring stability to their properties and the town. Along the way, Avery and Carrie found love. Meredith's inheritance was the farm where she runs her animal rescue. She barely makes ends meet, and the taxes on the property will be due soon. Meredith has big dreams for the property and applies to many places for grants to help her.

The story opens as Meredith shows up at a new neighbor's house, looking for help with an injured man. Ryan is a doctor, temporarily staying in Magnolia while he recovers from an injury he received on the job. He doesn't want to go with her, but she won't take no for an answer. Neither one has any inkling of the impact they will have on each other's lives.

I liked both Meredith and Ryan. Meredith leans toward the blunt end of the social skill set. After her mother left them, she was the only girl in the family with a somewhat gruff father and two older brothers. Her mother's desertion and a traumatic event while in high school left Meredith with a very low opinion of herself and her abilities. Add in the shock of the revelations about her birth father and two previously unknown sisters, and Meredith struggles with figuring out who she is. She built walls around her heart and buries herself in her work with the animals to avoid thinking about her problems. One thing Meredith has going for her is a sensitive and kind heart. I love her devotion to her animals and her determination to give them the best she can.

Ryan came to Magnolia to heal, not just from his physical injury but also from the emotional trauma. He's hiding out, wallowing a bit in the guilt he feels, but also going a bit stir-crazy. Though born to a wealthy family, Ryan's father raised him and his sister to focus on service to others rather than personal pleasure. Even family vacations were spent on volunteer opportunities instead of any fun or relaxation. As a result, Ryan focuses on work and has no close friends or hobbies. He also puts distance between himself and the family's wealthy side to avoid being judged for something he doesn't want.

I loved the development of the relationship between Meredith and Ryan. Their first meeting, as Meredith practically kidnapped Ryan, was both funny and a little heartbreaking. It hurt to see Ryan so deep in his guilt that he was afraid to help. Once he was there, he was okay, though still trying to maintain his distance. But a funny thing happened, as Ryan found himself connecting with Meredith and her animals. That connection freaked him out a little, and it took a couple of tries before he became comfortable around her. As the attraction between them sparked and simmered, their friendship also grew. I liked Ryan's protectiveness and support as he helped her with the rescue. I especially liked how Ryan refused to let Meredith put herself down around him and worked to show her how amazing she is. Working with Meredith and getting to know other locals showed Ryan what was missing in his city life.

The more time Meredith and Ryan spent together, the more their feelings for each other grew, though neither wanted to admit it. Meredith knows he doesn't plan to stay, and she doesn't see herself as appealing enough to keep him there. Ryan still insists to himself that he will return to his previous life and forget his time in Magnolia. But just as it looks like they might finally see the truth, a secret Ryan's been keeping comes out and runs up against one of Meredith's deepest insecurities. I hurt for Ryan as Meredith refused to listen to him, making him rethink his plans. Meredith's feelings of betrayal drove her to say some hurtful things. I loved seeing friends and family get involved in bringing the two back together.

The family dynamics in the book added to the emotional journeys of both Meredith and Ryan. Ryan's we mostly see through his memories of the past and the effects of his parents' actions on his life. We get a brief introduction to his sister, Emma, who makes a quick visit to Magnolia. Their conversation reveals a lot about why Ryan distances himself from his family and shows how much he cares for his sister. Another meaningful relationship is that of Meredith with her family. Her relationship with her dad changed when the truth of her birth came out. The distance between them hurts Meredith. I liked seeing the beginnings of a return to normal after Meredith's accident and her dad and brothers arrival to help. I also enjoyed seeing the continued closeness between Avery, Carrie, and Meredith. I especially enjoyed seeing Avery and Carrie work on Meredith's self-worth and help her steer through her relationship with Ryan.

now that i have completed the magnolia sisters series i can say that i really do love these books and the characters in them.

This final book tells the love story of the final Reed sister, Meredith Ventner. Meredith has never taken an interest into dating men and instead uses her time caring for the animals she takes in on her rescue. After an article is published in which she thought she was advertising her rescue, she and everyone else quikly learns that it is actually written about how desperate Meredith is for love. Thus, many men begin arriving and showing up to her farm in the hopes of getting lucky, but she is just NOT interested. Our MMC Ryan is an ER doctor from DC, but after getting a severe injury on the job that also leaves him emotionally hurt he decides to take the rest of his leave in Magnolia, where he can hopefully pass the time by quicker until he is allowed to return to work. His goal was to avoid the townspeople as much as possible but thats not how it works in Magnolia. Especially when the closest neighbor he has, Meredith, comes banging on his door because a man got injured when looking at animals on her property. Thats where their story begins.

Due to reviews on the second book I was extremely worried I wouldn't like it, and I luckily did but I can now say that the second book is indeed my least favorite of the series, so if you read the second one and are a little disappointed, don't worry the third one brings back all of the amazing feels of the first one.

I personally enjoyed our main male character in Ryan and was intrigued to watch his character development and learn what things caused him to begin thinking differently as well as what would help him heal both physically and mentally after the trauma he endured at work. I am glad to say that while both Ryan and Meredith both heal and grow in this book, it doesn't feel as much like 'he fixed her and she healed him'. It more felt like they both needed someone to trust and feel safe around in a way that allowed them to naturally heal, while also relying on the beauty of nature, an amazing community, as well as animals which we all know are great for helping people recover in many different ways.

One of my favorite micro-tropes in romance books is when the FMC is so beyond exhausted from doing something important but draining, and the MMC takes care of her by setting her up for a shower and getting her ready to just crash, BUT WITH NO SEXY TIME. I love the emotional care and intimacy that it demonstrates without the expectation of getting lucky and this book did have that. HAHAHAHHA I LITERALLY WROTE THIS IN THE REVIEW FOR THE THIRD BOOK BEFORE I REALIZED IT WAS ACTUALLY IN THE SECOND ONE. HAHAH OOPS.

Between the three sisters Meredith may be in one of the more unique and complicated situations because while both of her sisters Avery and Carrie grew up as only children whose mothers are still around, Meredith was raised by Carl Ventner, and had two older brothers, but her mom left when she was five years old. And Meredith carries a lot of the blame and guilt from her mother leaving and so many complicated emotions that just don't have the opportunity to occur in the lives of the other sisters. In this book we get to see what happens when both of her lives start to collide and meet each other, that being the family that she grew up with and raised her, and her newly found family in her sisters. That was an interesting quality and side storyline that i enjoyed reading about and watching develop.

Meredith is also different from her sisters in personality. She is much more gritty and blunt, and truly knows she is capable of anything she wants to do, physically. Shes confident in her ability to repair things at the farm, yet has trouble recognizing and acknowledging her worth when it comes to the work she has put into her rescue and the community as a whole. She constantly understimates and undervalues herself both as she manages and does nearly everything for her rescue, but also as a sister and friend, and community member.

I really did like Ryan and the ways in which he acted with Meredith. He was never shy about interacting with her in a way that gets annoying when it is dragged out in other books, and is fairly decent at sharing his emotions at some moments. Overall, I really loved them together and all of that.

Also, as always I enjoy the side characters in these books, especially when we get glimpses of characters from the first two books.

NOW, I will say I did notice some parts of the story that differ from the other two. I believe if I remember correctly, in The Magnolia Sisters, but definitely in The Merriest Magnolia, it talks about how Avery and Grayson are going to have a wedding around christmas, yet the wedding isn't until this book, and takes place in the spring. I know it is a small detail but with no explanation as to why, it felt kind of confusing.

4hr 42min
would i recommend? yes! if you liked the first one you'll like this one too!
spice? some but i would say 1/5. i think maybe the least amount of spice in the three books, again mainly generic descriptions or illusions.
did i cry? i dont believe so

The Last Carolina Sister by Michelle Major is the 3rd book in her Magnolia Sisters series. Refresher: This series focuses on the town of Magnolia, North Carolina and three young women who discover that they are half-sisters (the same father). Carrie and Meredith lived all their lives in Magnolia, and Avery arrived after learning about her inheritance. After a short time, the three of them became friends, dealing with the betrayal of their father, with each willing to help each other

Meredith Ventner, our heroine in this final book of the series, finally gets her story. Meredith, who is always hard on herself, runs an animal shelter, Furhaven Friends, and has a hard time asking people for help. She has become very close to her two sisters, Avery and Carrie, and together they always find ways to help each other, as well as building up Magnolia to its original glory. Meredith loves all of her rescued animals, as well as the three dogs she has. She knows she needs to fix up the shelter, especially the roof, and has applied for a grant that will allow her to expand.

Ryan Sorenson, our hero, just moved in next door to Meredith’s place, to recover from a leg injury. Ryan is an ER doctor, who was loaned the place by a friend, and spends his time drinking, feeling sorry for himself, and is shocked to hear someone knocking on the door during a rainy windy night. He meets his next-door neighbor, Meredith who is desperate for help, since she knows he is a doctor, and a friend is injured at her place, and will not take ‘no’ for an answer. Ryan reluctantly goes to check out this person, which turns out to be a mild injury.

Ryan checks out the shelter, and offers Meredith help, which she reluctantly accepts, and in a short time he finds himself falling for her. Meredith also is attracted to Ryan, but knows he is leaving in a few weeks, and is determined to not get involved, as well as her lack of self-confidence. Ryan enjoys spending time with the dogs, and especially Rachel, the goat who loves him. 😊 He ends up spending all his friend time working at the shelter, and to help fix the roof and other things, before the people who decide on the grant come to visit.

Avery and Carrie also see the attraction between Ryan and Meredith, but she refuses to acknowledge any feelings she may have. I loved seeing the sisters together, how close they have become over these three books. We also get to see Avery’s wedding.

Both Ryan and Meredith have their own issues; with Ryan having problems with his family and the death of a friend (his injury was due to a gang attack at the hospital, where his friend was killed); Meredith’s issues are her inability to accept that people care about her, and is capable of love. I did love Ryan and Meredith together, as they started to act on their feelings, but Meredith was a pain at times not accepting what was real. There was a point closer to the end that blew up whatever relationship they had, due to issues with the grant, and his family. Will Ryan and Meredith find a way to a happy ever after?

What follows is a wonderful heartwarming story with both Meredith and Ryan, but will they be able to get past their issues? The bond between the sisters was great and they made a great team. The Last Carolina Sister was written so very well by Michelle Major, with a great couple, and so many wonderful characters, including Avery, Carrie, Gray, Dylan and many of the townsfolks. I especially loved the animals, who were so cute and added a sweet element to this story. This is the final book in this series, but I just learned that Michelle Major is starting a new series, taking place in Magnolia, and cannot wait to start that series.

Meredith Ventner grew up disliking, yet envying the rich girl in town, Carrie Reed. Carrie's father Niall Reed was a famous artist who put their little town of Magnolia, North Carolina on the map. Upon Niall's death and the reading of his will Meredith discovered that Niall Reed was her birth father and left her property in his will. Meredith also discovered that in addition to having Carrie Reed as a half-sister, she also had another half-sister Avery Keller, who also had no idea Niall Reed was her birth father. Meredith soon came to respect and love her two new sisters. Together they plan to revitalize Magnolia along with supporting the animal rescue farm, Furhaven that Meredith established. But Niall left his estate in poor shape and taxes will soon be due on the Furhaven property. Meredith hopes that one of the grant applications she filled out would come through. In the meantime a handsome doctor, Ryan Sorensen moved in next door. They first met when Meredith went to his cottage looking for help for a man injured on her property. It was raining and the road was washed out so an ambulance wouldn't be able to get through to her farm. Meredith basically forced Ryan to come to this injured person's aid. What a way to meet... Ryan is only in Magnolia temporarily. But the attraction is strong. Will he end up staying in Magnolia?

Dr. Ryan Sorensen was shot in the leg when a gang confrontation erupted in his ER in the DC hospital where he worked. The injury was bad enough but what was just as devastating was the death of his friend that night. Ryan's chief of staff at the hospital, Dr. David Parten offered Ryan the use of his vacation cottage in Magnolia, NC while Ryan healed. At first Ryan was going stir-crazy there. But then the crazy woman from next door came and banged on his door insisting he go with her right away to aid an injured person at her rescue farm. She wouldn't take "no" for an answer and practically dragged him out his door and into her truck. What Ryan didn't realize at the time was that this woman, Meredith Ventner was going to change his life. First Ryan found emotional healing helping Meredith with her rescue animals and then more emotional healing when he fell in love with Meredith.

The Last Carolina Sister by Michelle Major is the third book in her Magnolia Sisters series. This is a truly heartwarming story. Both main characters have so much baggage to overcome. Due to their pasts they both have built strong, high walls around their hearts and immersed themselves in suppressed feelings. So a very insecure Meredith and a closed-off and a little bit crusty Ryan find each other, find trust in each other and find love for each other. I liked the emotional growth of these characters in this story. I was heavily invested in them finding their HEA and that's a very important element in my enjoyment of a book. I like Ms. Major's writing style and enjoyed all three books in this series. Fortunately this author isn't done with Magnolia, NC even though this is the last book in the Magnolia Sisters series. We get to visit Magnolia again later this year when Michelle Majors releases the first book in her Carolina Girls series, Wildflower Season.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The youngest of the Magnolia bunch, a trio of formerly estranged half-sisters, Meredith is the loner: independent, stubborn and blunt, yet introverted. Preferring animal companionship to human connection, Meredith is known for her compassion, having built a brand from the ground up in her rescue efforts in Magnolia, marked by pop-up adoption centers, training classes, and a full-blown converted coastal rescue center, Furever Friends.

Determined to keep to himself, Ryan Sorensson goes toe-to-toe with Meredith, torn between the desire to help and the crippling fear gnawing away at his mind. An on-the-go ER doctor in one of the most prolific hospitals in D.C., Ryan’s stay on the coast of Magnolia is merely temporary: healing disguised as a “vacation” as he recovers from a gang-related shooting that killed a close-friend and co-worker and resulted in a bullet to the calf. Craving silence and isolation, Ryan takes his boss up on a stay in his beachfront cottage, but the memories haunt every waking moment, turning him away from companionship and into the bottle. On a rain-soaked night, the incessant knocking of a woman on a mission push him toward connection, torn between the promise of solitude and nagging sense of duty, Ryan heeds Meredith’s call, resulting in an initially clunky asymmetric dual POV that invites the reader to experience both sides of a slow burn, strangers-to-lovers romance.

"His desires had never been a priority. He'd been taught to put his professional goals ahead of personal ones until he didn't have any of the latter. Ryan knew his existence would always revolved around his career. He didn't want to settle down or have a family of his own. [...] So it made no sense that he couldn't stop thinking about a future with Meredith."

Sweet, simple chemistry unspools between the duo, where silence soothes amongst the wayward shelter animals, Ryan and Meredith unexpectedly connected by menial tasks: feeding the dogs, cleaning the pens, administering medication. Although undeniable sexual tension simmers between them, their relationship is born of vulnerability: Ryan admiring Meredith’s calloused hands and undeniable work ethic all while discovering his own worth, the near presence of animals in need aiding in his own recovery and allowing him to appreciate the nuances of small-town life when he takes on a volunteer position at the local mobile medical unit.

Surprisingly tender compared to previous installments in the series, The Last Carolina Sister tests the bonds of family against sheer determination. Fraught with natural miscommunications and animal hi-jinks, not to mention a few emotional moments, Michelle Major shines bright, crafting a charming tale of sisterhood, perseverance and love in unexpected places.

Expertly crafted, pairing light-hearted banter with real-life problems, the third and final installment in the Magnolia Sisters series is an absolute delight. Full of emotional twists and tense encounters, not to mention a menagerie of furry companions, Major's latest offers a tender examination of the ways in which trauma effect relationships: familial, romantic and platonic.

The Last Carolina Sister is a fantastic and unputdownable romance about two broken individuals learning to open their hearts to love. I was captivated by this story and these characters and it’s all because of the wonderful writing from Michelle Major.

Meredith Ventner is a bright light in her community. She is kind and so passionate about animals. She does so much for others but when it comes down to it she doesn’t see herself as a person worthy of compliments or praise. Her life has always been complicated but things got even more so when she found out the identity of her birth father and half-sisters.

Doctor Ryan Sorensen is new to the small-town of Magnolia and plans to keep to himself. He has faced a traumatic event and is also dealing with a injury so hopefully this new town will help help recover in more ways than one.

When Ryan meets his new neighbor, Meredith, he is captivated. She is feisty and independent and he finds that so attractive. They don’t exactly get off on the right foot, but get to know each other pretty well as they spend more time at Meredith’s animal rescue.

Their romance is so spectacular and exciting to read about because their chemistry is so passionate. They may be different but they are similar in so many ways. Both are closed off which makes sense after you understand more about their pasts but they begin to open up to each other and find their own happiness.

There is also so much more to this story. Meredith is trying to find her place in life and has to learn her worth. Her half-sisters are so perfect in her eyes that she doesn’t feel like she will ever compare. They along with everyone around Meredith knows how great she is and how she can accomplish anything she sets her mind, but Meredith doesn’t look at herself that way. She is so used to feeling like a disappointment that it makes it easy to self sabotage. Ryan is also dealing with is own issues. He is dealing with survivor guilt and doesn’t know how to move on. He has always wanted to be a doctor and help people but how can he go back to the place that almost cost him his life?

This book was perfect from beginning to end. At the start of the story, readers will see how broken these characters are and when you read their growth you can’t help but feel proud of them. I really enjoyed the animal aspect of the story. I mean I am a sucker for animals and they really fit in well with the story and helped Ryan and Meredith connect.

I give The Last Magnolia Sister 5 stars. This was more than just a great romance. It was a beautiful story about learning your worth, the importance of family, and opening oneself to love. Ryan and Meredith both have incredible journeys and I think readers will be so satisfied and happy with how the story plays out.

We have come to the final book of the Carolina Sisters and we get Meredith’s story. Of the three sisters’ Meredith is the last to find her HEA. She is more concerned about her animals in her rescue shelter than she is about her love life. Over the years she has made some bad choices when it came to the men in her life. Especially when she learns who her biological father really is. This changes her whole life. She thought her self-worth only was fit for losers and men she could have a quick one and done with. But meeting the sexy doctor next-door, Ryan Sorensen gives her a whole new perspective on what she wants in life. She knows when a soul is hurting and that he is going through some life changes.

Ryan has come to the small town of Magnolia NC, to heel from not only a bad wound but from a life changing moment that took a good friend from him in a shooting in the hospital where he was an ER doctor. He was supposed to save life's and he could not safe the life of his friend. He just wanted to be left alone, but a rainy night changed all that when Meradith came banging on his door and needed him to help someone... and it was not the animal kind.

Of the three sister’s I think Meradith was the one who had the most to lose. She wanted to make her animal rescue center the best there was and her devotion to her animals was known to all her knew her in this small town. They knew she would do anything for her animals. Ryan has come to Magnolia to heal and little does he know that helping out at the animal rescue and getting involved with Meredith would again change his life. The only thing is, he keeps from Meredith who is family really is and when she finds out, she is so hurt and lost again.

I loved this story and I think Michelle Major showed all the vulnerabilities of these two people who were trying to find their way back to the lives they thought they wanted. She weaved the story of the 3 sisters into each story and I would have liked to see a little more of them in the end of this book. I feel like the sisters have more to say about how the changes is their lives have come together. That saying, I really did enjoy this 3rd story..

Thank you, Michelle Major, for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

Note: This review is for an ARC and is my unbiased opinion.

It's been a while since I read a book by Michelle Major. The Last Carolina Sister was a nice reintroduction to her writing. Despite being the third book in the series, it was easy to jump right in. There was just enough background information given about Meredith and her sisters for their relationships and the story to make sense. It was also given in a way that didn't feel like information dumping or cause a break in the story. My only complaint about the writing would be the switch between Meredith and Ryan's POVs. It was a small change in font rather than a new chapter or heading with their names to discern when things changed between the two. That made it feel more abrupt when it changed and took me a while to get used to.

As for the story and characters, I liked them both. Meredith was dealing with who she was after finding out her father was not her biological sister, that she had sisters, and that she was the only one of them still single. She also was trying to expand her animal shelter. Ryan was dealing with a tragic shooting that left him injured, mourning a friend, and on a "vacation" from his job as an ER doctor. The more time Meredith and Ryan spent together, the more I loved them together. Meredith was a little insecure, but also determined. Ryan was grumpy and trying to wallow in his pain. I enjoyed how Meredith's animal rescue brought them together. Helping out at the rescue and falling for Meredith became part of what helped Ryan heal, and in turn he helped Meredith heal. I loved the emotional journey they took together and love they built. The whole animal aspect just added such a special connection.

The Last Carolina Sister was a sweet, well written love story. I'm looking forward to going back and reading Meredith's sisters' stories.

I was really looking forward to this last book is the Magnolis Sisters series. You meet Meredith in the first book but don't really get to know her. She's kinda a mixed bag type of person. She's sweet and snarky at the same time. You never know which Meredith you'll get. I understand why she is the way she is but even with understanding why at times she's tiring.

I think the reason Meredith is the way she is has to do with both her past and present. You really need to read the story to understand what I mean. I don't want to get too much away also. Even with her switching back from happy to not I really like her. She might be a complicated person but she's also a loving daughter, sister, and friend. Plus, anyone that is that good to animals has to be a good person.

My favorite is Ryan. I really think he's a great guy who has tried hard to be a good person. I know he hides part of himself but understands why. I'm sure he has so many people that just want from him.

You'll love these two together because he likes her snark and deals with it well. They just work well together. I was happy how Meredith dealt with her family on both sides and really stood for herself and finally worked out the emotions from her past.

It was the perfect way to end this series and I am looking forward to the next one. It's called The Carolina Girls. I would mention that it's best to read this series in order. It just works better that way. You really get to know the sisters that way.

This was my favorite book in the series so far. I absolutely adore the characters of Meredith and Ryan and all of their backstory. I immediately felt connected to Meredith and all of the self doubt that she has. You come to realize that of all the sisters, she is probably the strongest one, but hides it well. She has watched her two sisters, meet the man of their dreams and fall in love, but doesn’t feel that she deserves the same. She’s made it her mission to not fall in love and keep up the charade that she is undesirable and unlovable. Ryan, who is a doctor suddenly shows up in town to heal from a terrible tragedy. She admits she’s attracted to him, but knows that he is way out of her league. Ryan has come to the little town of Magnolia, but has an immense amount of guilt, and he himself is lost. Trying to run from the tragedy that occurred and continuing to run from his past and who his family is makes him think that he is every bit as unlovable and undesirable as Meredith. Watching as these two connect and find some thing in themselves and each other warmed my heart. You have many of the same characters from the first two books and you get to see how each character has changed and grown. While Meredith comes off as bold and sassy, You find that beneath all of the hardness is such a heart of gold that she would do anything for anybody in her life. She has an immense amount of guilt for the family dynamics and watching her navigate through these feelings and discuss these feelings was at times heart wrenching. There were times throughout the book where I found myself, laughing, crying, and screaming. I very much enjoyed this couple and storyline and while this is the “last sister “I hope that the series will continue with other members of Magnolia.

Will the last Carolina Sister find her happily ever after?

Meredith is busy working with her animal rescue, a local vet and secretly trying to finish her degree. She is also working with her two half sisters to settle her late fathers’ estate, the father she never knew she had. She has no time for herself much left trying to find love. When she least expects it, a handsome neighbor has her wondering if maybe love can be in her future.

Ryan is an ER doctor, trying to recuperate from a shooting, staying in a small cottage on the outskirts of town. He is broken in more ways than one and the last thing he needs is a beautiful neighbor knocking on his door asking for help. Sometimes though, when you last expect it, love comes knocking.

I am a huge fan of Michelle Major and this book did not disappoint. It was well written, had complex characters, and keep me intrigued throughout the book. This is the third book in the series, and I was so excited to read Meredith’s story. The novel could be read as a stand a lone book, as Michelle Major does a beautiful job of filling in the back story of the series but getting to know the other sisters is well worth the read. I would love the series to continue with Emma’s story as well as some of the other characters that have been introduced. A huge thanks goes to Michelle Major for an advanced copy of the book to review. All opinions expressed are entirely my own and unbiased.

THE LAST CAROLINA SISTER is Book 3 of the Magnolia Sisters written by Michelle Major. A sweet tender romance between two tormented souls. Meredith Ventner knows a wounded creature when she sees one. Her temporary new neighbor is a successful, drop-dead gorgeous doctor. Ryan Sorensen is hoping that after a month of small-town living he’ll be healed enough to return to his busy ER. His injured leg isn’t half as painful as his guilt from the tragedy he’s trying to forget. Meredith is committed to expanding the animal shelter on her newly inherited farm and cannot waste her energy on a man who is only passing through town. Yet neither could ignore the attraction. Helping the feisty, tenderhearted Meredith care for her menagerie, Ryan questions his career-first priorities. THE LAST CAROLINA SISTER is not just about a romance but a journey where Meredith finds self-confidence in herself and in her abilities to run an animal rescue. The more Ryan spends time Meredith, the more he finds contentment. Can he change his life and open his heart, to claim it? Michelle Major’s characters and the small-town folks are genuine and lifelike with promises of new beginnings, second chances and always a happily ever after. The bonus story, A CAROLINA VALENTINE, is short, yet sweet romance with Dr. Paul Thorpe and nurse Aimee Baker. I received this complimentary copy from the author in exchange for my honest review.

This is the last book of the Magnolia Sisters Series, and I heartily recommend all three, read in order.
It takes place in Magnolia, North Carolina as the other ones did, but this novel concentrates on the third sister, Meredith Ventner. She lives along the ocean in a property that had been rented to her by her father, although she didn't know at the time it was her father. She also didn't know about her 2 other sisters; one she went to high school with and simply detested. She is the owner of "Forever Friends" which is an animal rescue operation. It's a shoestring operation, but Meredith loves it, and is very particular about who adopts each animal. She dreams of expanding it when she can raise the money to do so.
She meets Ryan Sorensen, M.D., who is "Vacationing" next door in a neighbor's house, when she comes to get help from him for an injured man in her house. Ryan is chomping at the bit to return to the city and back to his E.R. as soon as his leg heals from a bullet wound he got there. He's bored. Until he gets to know Meredith, who "can't waste her energy on a man who's only passing through town" and fully intends on returning to the E.R. the minute he can get clearance to do so.

This is the last book in the Magnolia Sisters trilogy.
This book concentrates on Meridith, she runs an animal rescue shelter and wishes to expand. She is not the confident lady and in many ways suffers really badly from imposter syndrome. She feels she is not contributing to the town the way her two step sisters are and finds it very hard to accept help from anyone, even family.
One night Meridith has to ask the man who is living in the cottage next door for help and so begins a friendship.
Ryan is in town for peace and quiet to help him recover from a leg injury he sustained whilst working in his busy city ER department. He is not wanting to get involved with either a woman or the town but life often has other ideas.
The more time that Meridith and Ryan spend together, the more they are drawn to each other, can they make things work?

I really enjoyed this last book. I liked Meridith as a character and in many ways could relate to her. I liked that her sisters didn't let Meridith push them away, they stuck by her and gave her the support and help she needed. I liked the animals and their characters, they were a great side character. I also enjoyed catching up with what the other sisters were doing.

This is the third in the The Magnolia Sisters Trilogy. The book can be read as a stand alone, but I read the 3 books in order. Avery, Carrie and Meredith are 3 half-sisters , all three are daughters of Niall Reed. Niall , an artist who outlived his talent. leaves all his properties and debts to one legitimate and 2 illegitimate daughters. The 3 books explain how these 3 women become "sisters" in a real sense.
Meredith runs an animal rescue at a farm she has rented from her biological father. Meredith relates better to animals than she does to people, but during this story that changes.
Ryan Sorensen is an injured ER doctor, who is staying next door to Meredith , while he recovers from an injury and tragic loss of a friend. Ryan wants to be left alone to mourn and wallow, but Meredith forces him to help her.
I really enjoyed the "snarky" side of Meredith, and Ryan's grumpiness, which is gradually changed as they get to know and love each other. It is another story where the man has a given time before he must leave, and he does, but plans change. A HEA ending that we all love to read!!

Small town living at it's best! With the third book in The Magnolia Sisters series Michelle Major brings us feisty sister Meredith in THE LAST CAROLINA SISTER, and I knew I was going to love her even before her story got here. The closeness these sisters have achieved after overcoming so much is such an inspiration. Endearing characters, laugh out loud moments and so much snarky goodness!

Meredith is loyal to a fault, kindhearted and speaks her mind like nobodies business. She also believes she's not exactly worthy, so watching her accept the love that Ryan showers on her is a beautiful experience. Loved her!

Ryan is the perfect match for her. He starts out bitter and just wants to hide away while he heals until it's time to go back to the job that is a trigger for his trauma. He isn't expecting to meet anyone like Meredith, but once he's hooked ... it's on!

I highly recommend this book and the entire series to anyone who loves a dysfunctional family who learns to love along the way while having good times along with the bad. Lots of love and lots of heart live in this series.

I knew after only reading a few pages that Meredith was going to be my favorite "Magnolia" sister. Not that I didn't love Avery and Carrie's stories, I did, but Meredith is a broken soul and she needs a very special person to make her whole again. That person would be Dr. Ryan Sorensen. Ryan has come to Magnolia to recover from a gunshot wound he suffered in a gang related shooting at his hospital, but it's not only his wound that needs healing, he lost a friend in that same shooting, so Ryan is a little broken too. Ryan and Meredith meet when she brings him to her place to stitch up a friend to got a little too friendly. Ryan learns about Meredith's passion, her animal rescue and he volunteers to help. They get to know each other, share things with each other. Ryan begins to heal both physically and mentally, Meredith starts to see that she is a strong woman, the way her sisters see her (I love the bound they share). But when Ryan forgets to share a very important part of his life, can they get through the pain to a happy ever after?

Meredith Ventner is still reeling from her mother abandoning her family when she was young. Then she gets hit with the fact that her dad is not her biological father and she now has 2 sisters she didn't know about. She made a lot of mistakes when she was young and still doesn't believe she is worthy of peoples love and affection. She puts her heart and soul into her animal rescue. Dr. Ryan Sorensen feels the weight of his families privilege because his dad has always had an issue with it and he made Ryan feel like he isn't worthy either. Ryan's accident sends him to Magnolia to heal both physically and emotionally. Both Ryan and Meredith are two people who both feel they aren't worthy who have to find their own paths to see they are not only worthy but deserve all the love and happiness that has come their way. Throw in some goofy dogs and adoring goats and you have a furever match made in heaven.

A Superb Series
Niall Reed had three daughters, but until he died they didn’t really know each other. Carrie lived her life dad serving her dad, Avery knew nothing about him, and Meredith in the same town watched from afar. The reading of the will brought them together and time made them true sisters. After a year, Avery and Carrie have both found their soul mates, while Meredith figures love is not for her and focuses on growing and improving Furhaven Friends, her animal rescue. Ryan Sorensen is an ER doctor and a shooting victim and came to Magnolia to stay in a friend’s cottage during his recovery. During a wicked storm which has isolated the cottages, Meredith seeks Ryan’s help when an unwanted suitor injures himself at Meredith’s house. Ryan began helping Meredith with her animals and slowly two wounded souls, both with family issues can’t ignore the chemistry between them.

Somehow The Last Carolina Sister is the first book I've read by Michelle Major. No clue how I missed her books thus far.
This is a classic sweet romance and I love it.
Meredith meets Ryan when he's in town for a short time. When she asks for his help, the two start off a journey they never saw coming.
Both characters are complex, with pasts that have left them wounded. Poor Meredith is still in shock over everything she's uncovered recently. And Ryan is a workaholic who's never known how to relax and have fun.
Their relationship starts of funny, and develops nicely. Both are true to their nature as things progress which is great. And I love what they bring out in one another.
Of course, they have to fight their feelings, and Ryan's only in town for a short time. Cue the ups and downs.
I am definitely happy to have found this book and want to go back and read the series in order.
