This book provided an interesting perspective on training, but it's geared towards a specific situation with there being a distance between the dog and the handler which isn't applicable to my situation, unfortunately. The training portion involves using a long line, however, where I'm located, dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6ft at all times, so it wouldn't be possible to practice much of this outside the home.
I will probably incorporate some of the games presented in the book and will be looking at the Rocket Recall book by this author.

GAME. CHANGER!!!!

I have a primitive breed. I felt so hopeless about his prey drive - we train in a lot of things but the one thing I never could get a hold of was his prey drive - at best it was ‘managed’ and by managed I mean he wasn’t going crazy trying to chase and I could walk away, and this was at its best which happened maybe 3 out of 10 times. Trainers have said ‘use treats’ or ‘high value treats’ but my dog wouldn’t even sniff the food if he knew prey was out. I felt hopeless… however I knew my dog’s intense drive for prey, also meant he had intense drive for *something* I just didn’t know how to harness it in a systemic way.

I can’t thank those who recommended these books to me. This has changed my life with my relationship and connection AND mindset with my primitive dog who is not very food motivated outdoors - it felt impossible to train him regarding prey drive UNTIL THIS BOOK! Thank you Simone Mueller for this amazing resource.

Now that I've had a bit of time to implement some of these techniques I'm pretty impressed. My girl has a super high prey drive and she has been responding relatively well to the 'stalking' we've been practicing. She will still chase occasionally and about rip my arm off but it is gradually improving. We're going to keep at the training and continue to add new games to help her improve. I would recommend it for anyone with a high prey drive pup.

A most-interesting book if you have an aggressive dog ! This really helped me understand and work with my Saluki who is a real hunter. Unofortunately he hunts other dogs and anyone who walks into our yard !@)(*#$@(
Great explanation of his psyche and how to modify his behavior.
the book itself is a bit rough around the edges and seems self-published but the content is very good

Helpful and practical

Enjoying working with our spaniel on these activities , which are well presented and understandable . No pretence of quick fixes, but lots to learn and work on in a positive way.

After a series of very eventful walks (I thought wildlife was supposed to be more dormant in the winter??) and one too many close calls with the neighbors' cats, I finally decided to look more into this predation substitution training thing I'd heard about in passing. I knew something had to change as I was wrestling my yowling high prey drive hound/terrier/etc. mix into the car at the end of our walk because a duck had chosen to hang out in the parking lot that evening. Maybe we didn't have to live like this!

I've only just started implementing some of the techniques in this book, but I've already been calling it a gamechanger. This book is a quick, simple read that will help you understand your dog more. Mueller emphasizes that the techniques will take time, practice, and patience, and I fully intend to make this a long-term strategy. But again, I've already started seeing results.

In my experience, every other trainer has advised me to interrupt my dog and keep her moving if I even get a hint she's going to spot something she'll want to chase. Mueller's training allows the dog to engage in the safe parts of the hunting sequence and provides safe substitutions with toys and treats when it comes to the chasing, tearing, killing instincts. In short, your dog can get to a point where they look in the wild all they want without tipping over into trying to chase.

I already let my dog sniff to her heart's content, I'm not a monster. But because of this book, I also started letting her "scan" the environment without worry I was doing the wrong thing. Halfway through our first walk trying it out, she scanned for a full minute as I encouraged her, and she decided she was done on her own. She turned around to face me and spontaneously gave me a sit, like we were taking turns and I got to decide what we did now. I legitimately got emotional. It felt like a huge breakthrough.

On another recent walk, my girl spotted a deer just off the path before I did, and she did her weird yodel murder howl at it and tried to chase when the deer bolted. Instead of fighting her all the way back to the car, we went a little further down the path to where she was calmer. I let her scan the trees for it again, knowing it was long gone. Again, she decided on her own she was done after a bit. She turned to me like, "Did you see that??", shook it off, and continued back the way we were going (away from the deer) without any indication from me.

I truly cannot recommend this book enough to people whose dogs have a high prey drive. I plan to read Mueller's other books as well, and I can't wait to fully implement all of the techniques. It sounds so simple, but my dog already seems happier on our walks and more tired out afterwards. It really has started to feel like we're safely hunting together instead of working against each other, and I'm so grateful.

Helpful and insightful book to understand and the Predatory behaviour of domestic dogs. Good mindset shift to see it as not an inherently “bad dog” characteristic, but a natural instinct and how to manage it safely and effectively, whilst enriching the dog and satisfying their needs.
Realistic that this is no quick fix but gives helpful and simple techniques to work on as well as strategies to get out of sticky situations.

Great hunting games

A great book for those of us who have dogs that love to chase when out on a walk. The games Simone details here have been really effective with my cocker spaniels and though we have only just started using them, I can see already how they are turning to me for entertainment rather than chasing the scents of other animals. Looking forward to practicing more with each walk. Thank you for the ideas Simone.

This is my first read-thru, and I haven’t started implementing the practice yet! I’m excited to learn, and will update this review again once we’ve had some time to train. My dog is HIGHLY prey-driven and I hope this will help us both— so he is fulfilled and everyone (myself, my dog, and the squirrels) is safe!

Very helpful in understanding a dog with high prey drive. It's helped me to realize my dog is just following her base instincts and to channel that into games that she loves.

Finding the parts of her instincts that she enjoys engaging with the most has really helped. She loves to sniff, track and chase. So we've been hiding a prey bag in the local park. She loves it.

Accessible, thoughtful, and practical

Well-written, practical games and protocols from a knowledgeable and experienced trainer. Works with the genetics of the dog and finds interactive ways to fulfill their innate hunting instincts while keeping wildlife safe and growing trust and cooperation between you both while doing it.

Spectacular book for the owner or trainer seeking to understand and control a dog’s predation challenges.

The book partners well with other predation training methods including UnChase and Chase! Managing your dogs predatory instincts.

The book gives a range of step by step exercises that increase in difficulty to go through with your dog, as well as explanations on body language and reading the environment, lead handling skills etc. Your predatory dog will both learn to make the desirable choices around prey without your micromanaging and become more responsive to you in the presence of prey.

Especially helpful for owners with dogs bred for hunting and less common non-biddable breeds, as a lot of the exercises rely on channeling instincts and using the environment

Incredibly Helpful!

I have a mixed breed dog who is part hound, part terrier, and part Rottweiler. He has a strong desire to hunt squirrels and other rodents (birds are safe) The Information here, like most dog training, seems like it should be common sense! I am astounded by how helpful the training and games are for us. Thank you and I can’t wait to read the other two books!
