It was hotter that ever. Hotter than the depths of hell… A few decades from now, life is not all too different. People still lead regular lives, have regular jobs, do regular things. But there are many things that are changing, under the surface. The temperature on Earth has begun to soar, reaching highs that have never been experienced before. Poppy and her family are submerged into a terrifying climate disaster of global proportions, far greater than humans have ever had to endure. They face many challenges along the way, as the fight between peace and power is as overwhelming as the fight against the unrelenting sun. Will modern-day life ever be the same again?
I loved this book. it had me gripped from the start. The characters are well thought out and I especially warmed to Poppy and Jameson (The Bot). The arduous journey they had was fraught with highs and lows, but all the time kept me addicted and I found myself reading it till the early hours. A very thought provoking read, especially in these challenging times we are currently facing.
Loved it! Face paced story with surprises along the way. I love the characters & they’re easy to create in your head without it being too boring & descriptive. Great story & a lovely ending
Don't expect a story about 2 weeks in Ibiza as you will be ripped from your sun lounger and thrown into a fearful new world that can no longer protect it's inhabitants from annihilation. Dependant on the robots for essential supplies humans must remain hidden inside until night time and hope for an answer.
It's Christmas in England and it's more like Summer outside. We join Poppy and Raine. Siblings trying to live a normal life with their family under the uncomfortable realisation that things are not quite right outside. Already having suffered tragedy they now have to fight through this strange new world.
There is a election in The USA and we meet our characters Sasha and Hanna. They are both presidential candidates and the tension mounts as they wait for the result.
Later we find out how these characters in two different countries are connected as Poppy and Raine set off on an adventure kicked off by a secret from the past that might just solve the world's problem.
It is now too dangerous to go outside during the day and we see how this affects Poppy and Raine’s life. It's very relevant to the changes in the world at the moment. One particular scene in the supermarket portrays the greed and desperation of people in a panic. Throughout I was reminded of our current crisis and how society has reacted to it.
The story continues in the UK as Poppy and Raine seek the answer to their problems with brief glances into the USA side of the story. Oh yes and there are robots or androids who are sent to help people get supplies and keep going.
The author recommended this book to me and I must say I did enjoy it. A L Jones has written other novels too that look intriguing. I liked that some of this book was set in Scotland as that is my home.
A section that rang true with me was a description of the media repeating the same news over and over creating a sense of dread and fear in viewers. In the end I had to stop watching the news here in our real world crisis because it made me so anxious. Another section in the book that stuck with me was when Poppy and Raine were low on water and were extremely thirsty. I really felt that thirst and dryness and had to reach for my Vimto squash quickly.
The book took me a week or so to finish it's a medium sized read. There were times when I binge read it so it definitely has the gripping factor.
I would like to know more about how certain things worked but I can't extend on that for fear of writing spoilers. My husband is always replying to me "It's fiction not a documentary!" when I am watching TV and I enquire "How did that work?" So it's probably just me wanting to know the ins and outs of everything. There was a few, small grammatical errors but that didn't deter me from reading to the end because I loved the story. It was fast paced, action packed and pulled a few heartstrings. I warmed to the characters who were realistic. I could conjure them up easily in my imagination. I felt the danger and was keen to know how Poppy and Raine would fare.
I would definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
