3. 5⭐ rounded down.
The MC Kacey is self-centered, shallow and whiny...not the easiest character to like.
If you look past this (or are prepared for it at least) the book itself is good.
The author addresses a lot of heavy handed topics (slut shaming, abuse, divorce and more).
While this was decent I would recommend A Homecoming to Forget instead; it showcases her writing in a much more complimentary way.
Thanks to Emily Camp for my DRC.

This book is an incredibly sweet YA romance. It follows Kacey who is a typical sixteen year old girl with loads of teen drama! Jack is just the sweetest guy and it was nice to see their relationship flourish throughout the book. Enjoyed this book thoroughly, would definitely recommend to anyone thinking of reading it. Emily Camp’s writing is great. Hoping there is more to come!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I goddamn love Jack❤️
How can he be oh-so-good-in-all and still manage to lack experience in girls?? I would literally do anything to be with him.... though he found his better half in Kacey, who fools around in search of love but always end up getting hurt.
They are so perfectly synched that you wouldn't even notice the efforts they make to work things out.
Highly recommended ✨

I am genuinely impressed with Emily's writing style.

BOY OF THE WEEK was a sweet, romantic comedy. Emily Camp wrote a story that will have her readers on an emotional rollercoaster along with her protagonist.
Kacey is a sixteen-year-old sophomore who is close to failing every subject. Since the beginning of the school year, her mind has been on boys, conforming herself to suit their interests, and her grades are suffering. Her counselor places her in educational support, and her assigned tutor, Jack, tries to help her with geometry and recognizing her self-worth. Will Kacey be able to see that Jack has feelings for her before her boy-crazy lifestyle pushes him away?
I enjoyed the story. I got into the book slowly, but once I learned more about the characters, I was totally invested. I thought the story was realistic, and the flaws in the characters made sense. I will read more books by Emily Camp.
Kassandra Cherry narrated the story. The crispness in her annunciation was a little off-putting, but I tried to attribute that to her interpretation of the main character. However, I think she could have conveyed Kacey's sarcasm a little better without the rigid pronunciations. She did a good job with the different voices, even echoing remembered words with natural acoustics. Also, the story was a performance, and she treated it that way. Cherry didn't just read the words; she acted them out.
I recommend the story for young adults who enjoy realistic romance stories. More experienced readers who enjoy coming-of-age romance novels would also enjoy the book.

Thank you to the author, Emily Camp, for providing me with an advanced reader copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review!

Boy of the Week is a very relatable read for anyone who has been through all those awkward high school relationships. There were many moments that I saw a bit of myself in.

My favorite character had to be Jack. He was such a sweetheart, with the right hint of nerdiness and awkwardness. He’s not only the boy of the week but the classic “boy next door”, the boy your parents always hope you’ll bring home. The conversation between Jack and Kacey when he expresses his interest in her is just so realistic and uncomfy in that teenage way that I felt like I was transported back in time! I remember having a few too many of those conversations. :)

I loved the way Jack engaged with Kacey’s younger brother, Gavin. As a girl with three younger brothers (one of whom is a decade younger than I am), the relationship between Kacey, Gavin and Jack really struck me as special. I was disappointed when the other love interests ignored Gavin.

I thought the friendship struggles between Kacey and her best friend Addi were a very relatable part of high school as well. Addi’s on and off boyfriend Tyler reminded me a little too much of a former relationship I had, and seeing Addi navigate that was upsetting but also important.

I wish we had seen the relationship play out between Kacey and her father a little more throughout the novel. Although he’s mentioned a few times, his importance is a bit understated for the role he ends up playing in her love life. The end reveal of why Kacey’s relationships don’t last is understandable, but would have been more meaningful if that relationship had been more prominent.

I do have to add that Kacey was my least favorite character, which was a tough position to have as the book is told from her perspective. Her lack of trying in school was a little bit astounding, and unbelievable. I didn’t have any sympathy for her failing her classes, and I wanted to in order to be more invested in her relationships. She just seemed to not give any effort whatsoever, and that made her rather unlikeable to me. Her age also made her attempts to find “the one true love” seem a little shallow — although if I was 15/16 again, I’m sure that’s how I felt! The best moments of Kacey’s were when she engaged with Gavin, her mom and sometimes Jack.

It seemed like overall, the book was a little rushed. Lots of dialogue and fast-paced timelines, but the setting wasn’t very developed and I didn’t have a clear visual of where we were. I think a little bit more emphasis could have been given to those elements in order to slow the book down and make the timelines a little more realistic/believable. The use of adjectives often felt forced, or like an afterthought.

As a whole, I think this book is an enjoyable read for the late high school crowd. It’s a great example of the importance of friendships, family and relationships in navigating adulthood. Anyone will be able to find a character they can relate to and see a lot of themselves reflected in. And for me, that’s the best part of any book!

2.5 out of 5 stars.

I loved Emily's ability to write characters that are so believable that you feel the emotions they are going through. The plot and characters are well developed and the story really keeps you engaged and wanting more. Kacey has a lot going on dealing with the normal teenager stuff like school, friends and she may be a bit boy crazy, but she also has some underlying family issues added in. This book has a little bit of everything and a great message. I would definitely recommend this book.

INITIAL THOUGHTS

I was really drawn to the cover. It was so simple yet intriguing. And honestly, I was in the mood for a light-hearted YA romance. So I was excited to read this one!

WHAT I LIKED

Jack. Oh Jack. He is the smartest kid in his high school class. He can tutor anyone in any subject, and he knows basically everything. BUT he is clueless when it comes to girls. And it’s adorable! When it comes to expressing how he feels to Kacey or just being around her when there is clearly more than friendship, he just seems uncomfortable and less than his normal confident self when he’s doing schoolwork. His lack of experience with girls and dating, his nerdiness, and his quiet demeanor just makes him oh-so-perfect <3

SO relatable. OMG. There were so many connections I made from my life to Kacey’s life. Multiple times, I was like, wtf?! How does this author know so much about me?? I may have gotten really annoyed with Kacey through most of the first half of the book, but that’s because I was that boy crazy naive teenager! So I get her. I really do! Plus, the issues these characters went through in their lives are so realistic. I went through all of this, and if I didn’t, I know someone who did. This is high school. Real high school. And it’s even relatable for adults. Kacey and Jack’s relationship had a lot of similarities to my relationship with my boyfriend. It was very nostalgic for me.

The ending. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’m just going to say that I love the ending 🙂

WHAT I DISLIKED

Kacey. BUT WAIT! I ended up LOVING Kacey. I just couldn’t stand her through the first half of the book. But trust me! Stick through the book, and it will be worth it.

Abrupt ending. Even though I love the ending, I do wish it wasn’t so abrupt. I think certain questions could have been answered in more detail instead of just a sentence or two. And I would’ve loved if that amazing ending could have been dragged out just a LITTLE more.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

If you asked me while reading the first half of the book, I would’ve been a for sure 3 stars for this book. But that second half was 5-star worthy. So, my overall rating had to be right smack dab in the middle at 4 stars. However, looking back, I completely understand why it was written that way. It’s almost like we had to dislike Kacey in order to eventually understand her. I remember the moment I was like, oh. I get it now. And I appreciated how everything was written. So, overall, this is a great book! And I would definitely recommend it. Just keep reading! I can’t wait to read another Emily Camp book.

Kacey Jones sure was boy crazy! Every week or month it was a new boy, but deep down we the readers find out the underlying problem of her past with her father and her mothers in-and-out bf's. Until Kacey meets Jack and her feelings become to real for her. This book has everything from drama, to friendships lost and gained, teen love and angst. I really didn't want the story to end and hope to see a squeal!

Kacey is such a typical teenage girl- looking for love in all places, in all ways. The boys she pair up with are typical teenage boys- including the one that ruined her reputation with just a rumor. This book could be written by following most any teenage girl around during her freshman year as she struggles to grow up, find herself and learn what dating is all about. Emily has done a great job of following that girl around and putting all her emotions to words. I highly recommend it to preteen and teen girls

3 stars rounded up

I do believe I received this book as an ARC however life got in the way and this book seemed to have slipped through the cracks however I think a late review is better then no review! I'm sorry Emily!

Kacey is a boy crazy high school student, she seems to have a new boy every week. She even puts boys before school which leads her to fail multiple classes forcing her to attend Educational Support. Kacey is paired up with Jack, one of the smartest students in what seems to be all classes. He is nerdy and awkward but also cute however Kacey decides that Jack should only be friends even if she seems to having warm feelings for him...

This novel was adorable, it was a refreshing change from all the steamy romances I have been reading lately. This was an easy read high school romance, however it didn't seem to intrigue me as much as I thought. I think the fact that Kacey is a very selfish and immature character may be a big part of it however Jack's character seemed to be the perfect amount of sweet. The way he treats not only Kacey but also her little brother and mom is to die for. *swoon*

I also love how this book also brings us insight on other aspects of Kacey's life such a her father that has been "missing" for 4 years as well as his addictions and how it affects her whole family. And the book also shows a bit of Jack's life with his "OCD" as well as his family dynamic having both parents being successful doctors. And on top of all that this book also glimpses into Addi's life, Kacey's best friend, when she deals with her toxic relationship with Tyler and her even more toxic relationship with her abusive father.

Really cute story about self discovery and love.
Kacey dates around. Although false there's rumors about how far she'll go. She gets paired with Jake for tutoring and he becomes her best friend. Everyone can see he develops feelings for her except for herself.
Suddenly her world becomes so jacked up that she doesn't think she has anyone she can turn too.
I loved the telling of this story and the outcome. However I was disappointed there was no conclusion on her moms story as that became a major subplot.

I was given an ecopy in exchange for a honest review.

A heartwarming and quirky story of the two most unlikely people to fall in love with each other, and they do so under a hilariously uncomfortable circumstance. Family, friendships, and future uncertainties make it altogether rich in drama, yet grounded in reality, so that it's a page-turner. My only issue with this story is that it ended too abruptly, instead of in sync with the pace set in the story.

A fun read!

God the main character is so vapid i could hit her in the face with my kindle. The whole book is her going from one guy to the next then stressing about what people are saying about her going from one guy to the next.

She's failing school because she's so busy dating and to be honest i can't remember much else except a forced daddy drama side plot.

Ending was abrupt and unsatisfying the only good thing about this book was the male character Jack everything else can suck it.

This is an excellent book for teen girls who are boy crazy and want clean romance and a lot of kissing. It is Clueless meets Gilmore girls. The main character is popular but snarky. Enjoyable read. I rated it a 5 because if I was still 14, this would be very relatable. I especially liked the element of slut shaming the poor girl just because she was fickled, even though she was a virgin and had pretty good morals for teen girl.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5

I thoroughly enjoyed Boy of the Week! I honestly didn’t expect this book to have me laughing as much as it did while also tackling some heavier topics in such a caring and thoughtful way. For a YA rom-com, Emily Camp did a great job balancing the humor and banter with situations that many teenagers actually face. 🫶🏻

The story follows Kacey, and I instantly liked her. She’s spunky, full of attitude, and completely boy crazy and I use the term boy crazy loosely because this girl practically has a new boyfriend every other day! 😂💀 But as the story progresses, you start to realize there’s a lot more underneath the surface when it comes to Kacey and her relationships.

Kacey is struggling. Her grades are falling apart, and she’s drowning academically, which lands her in educational support with senior Jack Landry the smartest boy in school.

And let me tell you…

THE BANTER BETWEEN KACEY AND JACK?! CHEF’S KISS. 🤌🏻

Their back-and-forth was easily one of my favorite parts of this book. The chemistry was there, but I really appreciated that their relationship wasn’t rushed. We actually get to watch their connection develop naturally, and I ate it up.

Kacey is also dealing with the fallout of a nasty rumor started by a boy, which causes other guys at school to make assumptions about her. Her reputation for always having a boyfriend definitely doesn’t help, but the story does a great job showing that there’s a deeper reason behind the way Kacey approaches relationships.

Because Kacey is used to everyone leaving her.

Her dad left.
Boys leave.
Ex-boyfriends leave.

And growing up, Kacey has watched her mom juggle relationships since her father walked away. That history has shaped Kacey more than she realizes especially when it comes to how she views herself, relationships, and what she expects from the people around her.

There are also two developments that shake things up. I wouldn’t necessarily call them mysterious twists, but they definitely change things for Kacey. One causes Addi, Kacey’s best friend, to turn on her, while another brings someone unexpected back into Kacey’s life.

Through everything, Jack begins showing Kacey a different side of herself. More importantly, he shows her what it feels like to have someone who isn’t constantly looking for the exit.

He sees beyond the rumors.
Beyond the attitude.
Beyond the revolving door of boyfriends.

And he shows her that he isn’t planning on leaving just because things get difficult.

I absolutely LOVED their dynamic.

Emily Camp nailed this YA rom-com! Boy of the Week is funny, sweet, heartfelt, and packed with fantastic banter while still touching on some very real and serious situations teenagers experience without making the entire story feel heavy.

It had more depth than I expected while still being such a FUN read. Kacey completely won me over, and honestly, I could’ve read another hundred pages of her and Jack going back and forth. 😂🤌🏻
