Kansan Hiram Pierce is a stubborn, opinionated man who has alienated his family and local community, but he is also a patriot, a man loyal to his state. When Governor Carney calls on every man between 18 and 60 to join the Kansas State Militia and stop Confederate General Price and his rebel horde from laying waste to Kansas, Hiram immediately signs up.
Hiram’s regiment is ordered to the Kansas/Missouri state line where he is wounded in battle and taken prisoner. As Confederate guards drive him and his fellow prisoners south, Hiram faces physical and emotional challenges that make him question the rightness of his past decisions.
Meanwhile, his estranged children gather in Westport, home of two of the sisters. The youngest, twelve-year-old Jennie has visions of her father as a wounded prisoner. Fearing he will die without her help, she must convince her older brother and sisters to put aside their grudges and rescue him. Can she overcome their resistance, and if she does, will her dream of a reunited family be realized?
I didn't review the previous three books in this series because I wanted to review them as a whole. I enjoyed all four novels and while they were touted as being stand alone, they really are better as a series starting at book one. I do recommend them it not only for the very interesting story, but for the look back at what life was like in the 1850's and 1860's. The back breaking, soul wrenching hard work, the possibility of death from childbirth and/or infection, that is unheard of and unbelievable in today's world. The fact that this began at an early age makes our young people's complaint's of boredom and their need for 'safe rooms' to de- stress seem a bit ridiculous. Please read this series and enjoy them as I did.
I discovered the first of this series by chance. Once I read that book, I couldn’t stop reading til I finished the series. About one weekend and I was finished. The characters are well developed with distinct traits, mostly admirable with exception of Hiram who is a boorish self absorbed goat ( no offense to goats). the overarching themes in the series exemplify how love and forgiveness help overcome abuse and hardships. Thank you Hazel Hart for this series…… I was sad turning the last page, as if parting with dear friends. Perhaps the series will be extended……🙂
I have enjoyed reading this senior books! I love any kind of book about America during the 1700-1800 to early 1900's. This one didn't disappoint! Make sure you start with book 1 and keep the books in order. Hazel Hart is an author I hadn't heard about but will definitely look for more of her books!
I choose a four star for this read. Everyone started working together to keep their family together. The father is not quite as stubborn and I'm thinking Jennie straightens him out.
This 3 book series was a joy to read! Getting to know and love the characters over the course of their journeys thru life was easy to do. I sure hope Ms. Hart thinks about another addition to this series ❤️
By the time I got to this 4th book in the series, I devoured it in a single evening. It’s been awhile since I have gotten so involved with a book series. The unique plot and character interactions kept me reading and thoroughly entertained.
Loved reading all 4 books What an amazing writer. It’s not easy to keep my interest but the author did just that Usually the last book in the series is not so interesting but not true with this series. Can’t wait to read more o books by this author
I really enjoyed this book. Number 4 of the series. I think this is the best one of the series so far. Hopefully there will be more. Each character was developed nicely .
More adventures for the Pierce Famiky. Father goes to war. The kids all connect and Father's new wife Ava gives him 3 baby girls. #PickThisBook #ReadThisSeries
Well written. This is not a story of Hiram but of his family. How they have their disagreements and how they come together in times of hardships. A heartwarming story.
