What do Muslim Terrorists, the Chinese Navy, and a disavowed Ranger Platoon have in common? After the events in Techno Ranger, 1LT Sam Harper and CPT Schnier's Ranger Recon Platoon gets sucked into a sniper shoot-out in the government sector of Manila.
Where they aren't supposed to be operating.
Michelle is around to complicate their lives with CIA shenanigans, but it's when Schnier runs into his own ex-girlfriend that everything becomes infinitely more complicated. Terrorist and military threats to the Philippines turn personal for everyone.
Thomas Sewell lives in Charlotte, lured there by his wife, but grew up out West. A late intellectual bloomer, at age 13 he graduated from high school and started computer electronics courses in college. (Assembly for 8-bit processors!) Already 6 ft. tall, so no one noticed he was a little young. Bummed rides to school because he was too young for a driver's license.
Thomas has always been an autodidact with a variety of hobbies and interests, especially economics, military history, and the law. Worked in Reston and McLean, Virginia on 9/11, but only ever officially worked for the government as a contractor. Thomas has performed technology and security work for several fortune 500 companies and in a quarter of his time manages a team responsible for one of the world's largest financial networks.
Along the way, he's founded a private security company, an Internet Service Provider, and a K-8 Charter School. He's read over ten thousand books and written a few in self-defense, among them the Sam Harper, Sovereign Security Company, and Mike Drake series, some of which you can even purchase.
**** SPOILER ALERT **** In "Covert Commando: A Sam Harper Military Thriller" Sewell starts the story with the volume at "eleven" and it only goes up from there. As with everything else that I've read by the author the world building and character development is top notch. Especially the character development of both Michelle and Captain Schmier. We also meet new friends and allies for the platoon. In addition an enemy from the past shows up, add to the mix a locally grown terrorist and corruption at the very top of the host country's government. Sewell weaves a fine and balanced tale while delivering a compelling tale. I really enjoyed this book and am eagerly awaiting book three!! With that being said, I do recommend this book. Although this is a standalone novel, I strongly recommend that you read "Techno Ranger" first. In the interest of transparency, I was given a review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review. It is my own honest opinion.
Sam is in it up to his neck. He finds different kinds of love and hate throughout the book. He even looses his love without his involvement. He tries his darndest to keep a level head about him but things go sideways too easily. He’s caught in the action from beginning to the end with a mystery woman just outside of everyone’s view.. Everyone wants to know about her and how she is tied to Texan’s past. North Korea is at it again but this time at arm’s length until the connections start being made but confirmation of facts are very elusive until the end. Action, mystery, boy meets girl, boy looses girl, boy is confused.
Read this Sam Harper novel and hope for a follow-up book. We need to investigate some characters and their
Fast paced action thriller Loved it. This book started off with a bang. It grabbed me right off as it set up the various groups involved and kept my interest right from the beginning to the very end with the fast pace and good plot. There were plenty of twists that kept me guessing. If I was to best describe our main character he is like a carefree surfer or a lone badass cowboy. He works with the other rangers well enough but has a tendency to do things on his own, expects everyone to go along with his plan. He is fearless and I liked his character as well as all of the characters that were well done. My only question is, would a ranger miss a shot at 600 meters? I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.
The author was able to flow right into this second novel, from his first. Highly recommend that you read the novels in order, there is just so much going on that I believe you will not come into the novel with the background that you need. The story was so vivid, it played like a movie in my head. It made me smile at times as girlfriends and the CIA has decided to complicate our Rangers lives. Sewell is a talented and gifted author who has created a tense and rapidly moving story line. You will not want to miss this one. I received this novel through Book Funnel. This is my honest and true review.
Face paced action - a military novel that is well crafted with a strong story line, smartly defined characters, and great location descriptions. Sam Harper, a military intelligence officer, Captain Schnier, a Ranger field operator, and CIA operative Michelle, combine forces with the Philippino police forces to combat China aggression and Islamic terrorists. A fine read, guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Well written novel with lots of action! Well developed characters and storyline with subtle twists. I look forward to more works by this author. His fristb2in this series are great!
A second great Sam Harper book. That man gets in and out of more trouble. That is what makes Thomas Sewell's book so great. Lots of edge of your seat action
Another Great Book in the Same Harper Military Thriller Series. Found it really Hard to put down. Cannot wait for Book 4 Terrorist Interrogator to come put.
I received this book from the Author and BookFunnel.com in exchange for an honest opinion.
This book is the epitome of fast paced action – a military novel that is well crafted with a strong story (with a few twists)and smartly defined characters and a vivid description of the location.
As with all books that I read to review, I read them with a critical eye with the intent that if I can find any minor corrections and pass this on to the author than maybe he/she can make the minor changes prior to releasing the book for final release.
That being said , I found only a few minor errors in the book and none of them would subtract from the value of the read. (1) (2) "Dratz" (is this a simple misspelling - "Drats"?) (3) "Glad to here (hear) American rangers aren't invulnerable after all." This book is an excellent read and would be enjoyed by fans of Tom Clancy.
I would rate this book as a strong candidate for a five star review (but it seems that I may be a little over enthusiastic and give a few too many five star reviews). As such, I am going to give this book a strong four star rating (I can't seem to find a way to give a four and a half).
As with everything, this is only my five cents worth.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A covert US team stopping a political assassination then a story about a US woman who has been drawn in to an extremist group then the capture by the extremists and escape of one of the commandos... and lots of international political intrigue.
I don't care about (descriptions of) weapons but the story was great.
The book started a little slow for me and I almost put it down. After a few more pages I was hooked. There is a lot of action and suspense it his story. I really enjoyed the read as it was different from most action books. I will look for more of this type in the future.
When there are units from three countries and none of them know what the other is doing it qualifies as covert. Death and destruction follow, but that seems to be Sam’s modus operandi.
If political intrigue, brinkmanship, and black ops are your go to, go to this one.
Covertly, in the Philippines, a group a of highly trained men work to provide safety for the candidates for the upcoming election. The Chinese have been bribing the sitting President. To add to the drama, a young American woman is held hostage by a Muslim man who is working with the Chinese. Continuing without official sanction, the crew works to root out a group of soldiers who want to promote the Chinese-Filipino Alliance. Maintaining the secrecy of their mission and yet accomplishing the destruction of the enemy and rescuing the hostage, makes this a fast paced book that the reader does not want to put down.
