Once Bitten

Falling for a biker was a bad plan.

Falling for an undead one was a bloody terrible plan.

My life is falling to pieces. My relationship has crashed down around me after years of resentment, and after the final straw breaks it completely, I need an escape.

I'm ready to let my hair down and ride into the sunset with a man who is the exact opposite of the man I wasted years with. And by ride into the sunset, I mean riding someone until the sun comes up before going back to face my real life.

Unfortunately, life has a way of dishing out problems quicker than Grandma dishes out second helpings. And I've managed to get myself tangled up in a gang war between Vampires and Werewolves. Leather-clad, bike toting, temper flailing bad boys with super-human abilities.

What could go wrong?

Oh yeah, everything.

If you're a fan of paranormal romance with blood-sucking bad boys, drama, violence and love, you'll love 'Once Bitten', the first in the Arcane City series, by Tilly Hart.

After an evening run to buy a pregnancy test kit – which would no doubt be negative as always – Rebecca stopped at her favorite pizza place to get something to eat. Her marriage was almost dead. Ben wouldn’t come near her except for the frantic tries to get her pregnant. She hardly cared anymore. A handsome biker caught her attention at the door of the pizza place. She had seen him before and indulged in a few fantasies about him. But it never came to anything, until this time when he looked up and their eyes locked. She panicked and stood to run, knocking her coke all over the floor as the glass shattered. Then a whisper in her ear said, “I noticed you without the dramatics.” Turning to tell him it was simply an accident, she was speechless seeing those eyes up close! And that elicited another smirk from the sexy man! It only made her realize how many years she had wasted with Ben. She should have walked away long ago.

Jed went to the dumpy bar to talk with Calvin. The vampires were angry that Calvin’s Sons of Cerberus leader, Greyson, was getting more and more violent, definitely drawing the attention of humans which would make it hard on everyone. Taking out the politician’s wife last month will bring on an investigation that none of the supernaturals want. If Calvin’s club couldn’t take care of their own problem in one week, the vampires Jed represented would take action. No one wanted a war.

Rebecca once again did the pregnancy test and it was negative. Eight years of trying. Ben was angry that she was not more upset, until she finally said she had never wanted children, this was all for him. So he told her he was done with her. He didn’t care about passion or love. He had a plan and she wasted 8 years of his life and put him off schedule! Then he said he would sleep in the spare room and, in the morning, they would work on yet another plan for getting her pregnant! Nothing had changed, except the truth had been verified. She meant nothing to him. She packed a suitcase and left. She got a room for the night, then stopped at a little bar for a drink to settle her nerves. Everyone stared and she was about to leave when a hand touched her back and the biker from earlier led her to a seat and bought another beer for her. She asked if he was really a biker and said it must be such an adventure. So he invited her for a ride. But instead of taking advantage of her, he left the bar and was accosted by three werewolves who had seen him with Calvin. In their human forms, they were not as strong or fast as he was, and they fought.

Rebecca was falling for the handsome biker. Something drew the two of them together. But there is a terrible gang war brewing between Vampires and Werewolves. Can she really risk getting involved with him now?

The writing and editing was not very clean in the ARC version of this novel, with multiple missing words and wrong word choices per page. Hopefully most of the editing issues were fixed in the final version. The world building was not especially creative, having most of the standard elements of traditional vampire and werewolf lore. The characterization was competent, with both hero and heroine being sympathetic individuals. I liked the fact that the heroine did not want children. I have been seeing more paranormal and sci-fi romances recently where the heroine is not interested in motherhood, and it is great to see that choice get more positive representation. The development of the romantic relationship was very fast and not especially organic, in my opinion. The plot and pacing was exciting, though there were way too many convenient coincidences or dumb decisions by the heroine that benefited the plot. I felt that it was a little bit of lazy writing. There was medium angst and high stakes in this novel, which tends to be one of my preferred narrative structures for a romance novel. This novel used the Partner in Trouble trope and the Forced Proximity trope. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship rated four stars. The world building, plot, and pacing rated three stars. The multiple editing issues in the ARC version rated two stars. The combined score of this novel is therefore three stars. This novel ends on a Happy For Now ending. I did not consider it a true Happy Ever After ending because the heroine is mortal and the hero is immortal at the end of the novel. I recommend this novel to readers of paranormal romance who want to see more representation of heroines who do not want children. I do not plan to buy myself a keeper copy of this novel, primarily because of the multiple editing issues.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It was smooth to read and I actually quite liked until I reached the 80% mark... then with each word it became a NO for me. Don't get me wrong, I like my fare share of violence, blood and massacre but when it comes to Romance , and this book is labeled as "Romance", I want my protagonists intact when I read the last page. No Happy-For-Now endings and No Maybes.

WARNING: This story contains triggers .

Needs a good editor.

There's a few places that even grammarly would have picked up the typographical errors, and a few more continuity errors. The worst is probably the heroine turns stupid for drama. You can create conflict and drama without having someone's intelligence leak out their ears

It's better than Twilight, and would be so levels of awesome with the help of a good editor.

Exciting Adventure

I read cover to cover in one sitting. I loved the characters portrayed here and the adventure!! The idea of Rebbecka going into the werewolf club with guns with silver bullets blew me away it was exciting. The love between her and Jed just made the book that much better. Bravo!!!

Action, excitement, danger, and oh yeah....vampires and werevolves. This has the paranormal spin to the MC romance and I enjoyed it so much.

good vampire novel

I enjoyed the story, but loosing the hand was a bit much. It left the heroine looking too dependent. An injury was okay, but that was distracting from the love story.

vampire wolf witch

A political power struggle in the wolf pack effects the vampires. A human falls for a vampire. Wanted a few more details but nicely wrapped up.
