In this first book of SONIC SELECT we take the very best stories from the Sonic Super Specials. See Sally embark on a dangerous mission in "The Quest" while Tails proves himself for the first time in "Tails' Tallest Tale." Thrill to the early adventures of Sonic and Knuckles in "Panic in the Sky" and "Lord of the Floating Island."

Mmm..Finally I can read the off shoots from STH. I've actually read quite a few of these already so that sucked but it was expected since I've been a long time collector of sonic comics but I am missing on some of the off shoots so I felt it was a good idea to pick up these.
My complaint is the books are tiny, smaller than an average comic so overal it means the pannels have been shrunk which makes me wonder why they didn't print it with a normal comic size? Lots of trades do this.
this is a selection of different comic book stories, there's a lot more to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is kind of fine at best. It's weird that the comics do not take time to really slowly move through the source material. The stuff in here that's not from the videogames is pretty weak and cursory.
For an early Sonic comic, this collection is pretty decent. It features a bunch of stories from the first three 48 page specials that came out in the early 1990s. Sonic in Your Face had a nice (albeit weird) Sally story about her discovering how Nicole came to be. It's oddly paced and feels a bit out of sync with the scifi nature of the world, but it does start presenting Princess Sally as a competent, thoughtful leader, something most princess stories at the time were not doing.
There are two major Sonic and Knuckles stories as well, both mostly featuring the two fighting with one another, but then realising there's another villain responsible. Somehow these are less irritating than some of the future stories in the main comics, possibly because the tone of the stories is still silly in these issues. None of it matches up with the later lore, but honestly, I am rapidly discovering that the Knuckles comics I loved so much as a kid are... not that great! There's a bunch of one shots featuring the character here and they are so slow and don't really do much to coherently build up his world. They are not the worst, but... definitely could be written better.
Finally, there's a couple one-shots with Tails, and a story featuring the Substitute Freedom Fights that are quite fun. Overall, that sums up this volume: kinda silly, full of heart, and lots of fun. For a Sonic comic, that's pretty good! I can imagine it might be weird for reads to pick this up though given how many changes the series went through stylistically, but it was a nice little nostalgic moment for me!
This is a great way to read a lot of the specials...which sometimes had richer stories and artwork than the regular series. Over time, the specials were a way to build up stories in the main comic's ongoing storylines.
The stories themselves rate a 3/5. The main issue is this is not a very good *collection* of the stories: - I don't like the cover, which has three of the four looking cool/normal, while Tails has this really goofy gawp-face that throws the whole thing off. - The SECOND Table of Contents directly contradicts the first one, because it's pulled directly from the Sonic the Hedgehog Special #1 and left unedited, and there's honestly no reason to have it in there at ALL, *especially* because it has the wrong information. - "The Quest" *is* one of the better stories from when the Archie Comics stories started focusing on more serious storylines than the throwaway slapsticky ones like "Tails' Tallest Tale." However, it's focused almost entirely on Sally, which is sort of disorienting in a series called "Sonic the Hedgehog to start the spotlight on a character who is NOT Sonic the Hedgehog. - Okay, the THIRD Table of Contents tells me they slapped together three issues in one without editing in the slightest, because it has the stories from Sonic & Knuckles in the same order (but at least has no page numbers to be wrong or content listed that wasn't included in the final). - The splash page following the third ToC was definitely slapped-together, and I'm not going to look up to see if it was like that originally: There's a detailed background image with text overlaid, but all of the letters with "holes" have white space instead of being able to see the background through them—so A, a, b, d, e, g, o, p, q, R. It's really distracting and honestly feels like it shouldn't have happened in the first place, since most of the time you would make that kind of page by having the background and typing a layer of text over it in whatever image editor. It takes special effort to have the letters containing solid white like that. - Strangely large amount of "Knuckles is antisocial" stories: 5 out of 10 of them! - Also, it doesn't feel like a very cohesive collection. I think part of the problem is the main series as a whole was trying to do too many things at once, first starting out with designs from the animated series pilot (hence why Sally changes so much in the first issues), then also trying to work in plots from the games AND the animated series AND trying futilely to keep them all coherent, then also spinning off into lots of differentoffshoots trying to milk that cash cow and not doing a very good job of it. I haven't gotten around to reading the IDW Collection, but that seemed to be created by fans vs. "professionals" and, therefore, have a lot more care put into the stories... I'm told.
Anyway, another one I found and handed off to the niece for her reading homework (20 minutes a day, and graphic novels count!), but the absolute radio silence on what I got back suggests it was a flop. Too bad, I almost hoped she would've become a fan after reading, but Wings of Fire (graphic novel) is apparently a tough act to follow somehow, even though it's about Dragon Politics. So, I can't imagine this specific volume would generate NEW fans, and my experience is just supporting evidence.
My children and grandchildren love the sonic video games, having the sonic books for them makes reading fun and that means they will read more and more, always a great thing.
