Dare To Be Great: Unlock Your Power to Create a Better World

Rate this book
‘I know it may not yet look like it, but we are sowing the seeds of greatness for countless generations to come. That is the Great Work of our times. Yours and mine.’

This is a book unlike any other. It does not tell you what you must do, it does not set out a guide for the 10 definitive steps to becoming great by next Thursday. Dare To Be Great is both a playful, inspirational conversation and a heartfelt, lived call, daring each one of us and our society as a whole to become truly great. Celebrated Earth lawyer Polly Higgins was a luminary in the environmental justice movement as she worked to Stop Ecocide across the globe. She was a beacon for how to live the brave, bold lives that, at our best, we imagine for ourselves. This book shares insights from her own remarkable journey, inspiring us to recognize and step into a greatness within – that is not about grandiosity but something far more exciting: aligning with our unique purpose in service of a better world.

Maybe its me but i didn't enjoy this book, the reading of it - i admire Polly Higgins so much and what she achieved and put in motion but the hype of the book is so much more than the book itself. Having said that, i'm heading to www.stopecocide.earth/conscientious-p... to sign up immediately as a Conscientious Protector.

Ms Higgins words boiled away in my subconscious, even after signing up as an earth protector, so i've started a series of blogs on ecocide - which i'm calling the Ecocide Diaries. The first dealt with the original killing and burial of the crime of ecocide, referred to by Ms Higgins in her books and the subject of research by Dr Short et al of the University of London - here's the link wisethady.wordpress.com/2020/05/15/th...

I dived into this book expecting practical, objective, matter-of-fact information on how to improve my environmental consciousness and become "greener". This was not it. And I don't mean that in a bad way, quite the contrary, actually. I'm fully aware that this type of book will NOT be for everybody. However, I consider myself a spiritual person and I'm always on the search for something deeper, a more profound aspect of things. This book is a wonderful combination of spirituality and environmentalism. Okay, more heavy on the spirituality, I'd guess about a 80:20 ratio. It is honestly one of the most influential books I've ever read and if you're like me, and consider environmentalism as not simply a mean of ensuring a long life for yourself, but something of a higher meaning, a path not only to a better environment but a better humanity as well, you're gonna love this one. However, if you want hardcore facts, statistics and so forth, just look up the websites stated at the end of the book or pick up a completely different book altogether.

This book discussed protection of the environment (through the Ecocide Law) and ways to fulfil your potential.

I was disappointed by the book – given the state of the world I was expecting it to grab me by the throat and shake me, but overall it left me cold. Some parts of this book were interesting but overall it didn’t really seem to go anywhere or have a theme – protect the environment and be the best you can?

Overall reading time was around two hours – but it felt longer.

Another one of those, the book came to me at the right time. Loved learning more about Polly Higgins, her work and her legacy. So grateful for what she had such determination and fortitude to build. I was at the XR rebellion in April 2019 when they announced she had died from a short fight with cancer. The whole experience had such a profound effect on me it changed my course in life. Polly Higgins' work and approach to life is such an inspiration.

I only became aware of Polly Higgins and ecocide recently. She was obviously an amazing woman and I have signed up to become an earth protector but I just didn’t find this book that readable or inspiring. Odd passages I enjoyed but generally speaking you are probably better just going to the stopecocide website and going from there.

Interesting perspective about how self improvement can also help the planet.
