Raising Empowered Children: The Codependent Perfectionist’s Guide to Parenting

Rate this book
What if the quest to be a perfect loving parent was the very thing that kept us from giving kids what they really need?

Do you ever feel that despite your best efforts you're still not the kind of parent you want to be? For parents who struggle with perfectionism or codependency--sometimes without even being aware of it--the pressure to raise good kids can feel impossible. Raising Empowered Children is about becoming aware of the ways that we sabotage ourselves so we can find a more satisfying and loving approach to parenting.

As a trained therapist and recovering codependent perfectionist herself, Carvalho guides us through the major parenting stages, tackling topics like helicopter parenting, natural consequences, boundary setting, role modeling, and positive reinforcement. Through case studies, personal anecdotes, and actionable insights, Carvalho provides practical steps to help us learn how to love our children--and ourselves--for who they are rather than who we think they should be.

I am in the grandparent stage of life. I wish I had this book when raising my own children. Very helpful thoughts on how to avoid a co-dependent relationship with your children, and give them confidence in their own abilities and decisions.

Graciously received free copy through first reads.

Full disclosure, I'm not a parent. However, I was raised by perfectionist/codependent parents and could easily see myself falling into that generational loop. I think this book suggests great strategies to keep yourself from being like your parents.

Will these strategies actually work? I have no idea and the author doesn't give many success stories to show these strategies work, but I'm keeping the book to refer back to later if I ever become a parent.

Highly recommend it to any perfectionist codependent parent out there! It's an eye opener team! It made me aware of my actions, the pressure I put on myself to raise the "best kids" and the overwhelming feeling of never being enough. I recommend 100%
