About the author

Kuntowijoyo was born at Sanden, Bantul, Yogyakarta. He graduated from UGM as historian and received his post-graduated at American History by The University of Connecticut in year 1974, and gained his Ph.D. of history from Columbia University in year 1980.

His father was a puppet master (dalang) and he lived under deep religious and art circumstances. He easily fond of art and writings and became a good friend of Arifin C. Noer, Syu'bah Asa, Ikranegara, Chaerul Umam, and Salim Said.

His first work was "Kereta Api yang Berangkat Pagi Hari".

Despite of the need for a better editing and proofread, the short stories are enjoyable. It is the fact that there is the inconsistency between "saya" and "aku" even in one sentence (mostly in "Mengail Ikan di Sungai") and several typos including the confusing one between "kali" and "kail", but in general I enjoy the stories.

Of course these fifteen stories are not impressive in similar way and level. In my opinion, the most impressive ones are "Ikan-Ikan dalam Sendang", "Gerobak Itu Berhenti di Muka Rumah", "Segenggam Tanah Kuburan", "Anjing", "Samurai", and "Sepotong Kayu untuk Tuhan". To be honest, I didn't like "Serikat Laki-Laki Tua" and "Musyawarah Satu Sembilan Enam Dua" and also two short stories contain "my brother Yudo": "Politik Kakakku Yudo" and "Hari Libur Bersama Seekor Kambing Perahan".
