Karl Larsson is an out of work roughneck, home from the oil fields of Alberta and back on the west coast for the first time in years. His wife has left him and his future looks bleak. Becoming a detective is the last thing on his mind, but when Karl learns that he has inherited his estranged grandfather’s agency he decides to take a chance.

He doesn’t expect much action in a city as small as Victoria, BC, but Karl soon finds that Victoria is only the base of operations. His grandfather’s business took him across the length and breadth of Vancouver Island, and the Island is a world unto itself, with a culture all its own.

When a reporter from a national news agency asks him to investigate a drug running operation on the Island, Karl is drawn into a dangerous game. Finding the truth sounds simple in theory, but as Karl delves deeper he begins to realize that more than his life may be at stake.

3.5 stars.

Karl inherits his estranged grandfathers detective agency. After losing his job and his wife, Karl takes the opportunity to start over and jumps in with both feet. He builds up his case load and finds himself enjoying the work. He is approached by an old client of his grandfathers who wants him to investigate a large drug circle and help to bring down the leaders behind the operation.

This was an entertaining novel full of family secrets and undercover espionage. Karl was a down-on-his-luck main character who I enjoyed rooting for. The storyline flowed well and kept me intrigued and curious until the end. I enjoyed the detective agency aspect and what that brought to the storyline. There were several intense scenes that had me on the edge of my seat.

Overall, this was a quick, well-written mystery that I recommend to those who are looking for a lighter suspenseful, easy read.

Thank you to the author for sending me a physical copy to read and review.

After his grandfather passes away, Karl Larsson inherits his detective agency. With no better offers and no experience, he decides to set up shop and see where this new adventure takes him. He joins forces with his 19-year-old cousin Kelsey, and they are soon on case. Not one they are ready for, and they must learn as they go.

Karl and Kelsey are strong, fun, likeable characters, and they make a great team. It was easy to root for them, and I enjoyed the adventure set on Victoria Island, BC, Canada, they took me on

While the crime here Karl and Kelsey are investigating is a heavy one involving illegal drugs, Arlana Crane delivers us a lighter, entertaining read with some fun humor to it and plenty of tension to the story. It had the vibe like a detective TV show has. I loved the fun, surprising twist at the end of the story!

Karl had no job, a bossy sister, and then an inherited detective agency.

We meet Karl as he starts up his grandfather's detective agency, and then adds on his niece as an assistant.

Karl was getting jobs, but when he is asked to help break up a drug ring or at least find out where it is, it is a bit more than he was used to. He did like the challenge, though.

I thought it was pretty dangerous, and it made me nervous when he was taking photos and going undercover. I was happy when he was done and returned to his office. The part of the book did become a bit long.

This book has great characters and is a light read except for when Karl was on this dangerous assignment where drugs were being sold and people had been murdered.

You will like Karl and definitely like take-charge Kelsey.

MORDECAI'S ASHES had a nicely flowing story line, plenty of tension, some levity, and a fun twist at the end.

This was an enjoyable read. 4/5

This book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Time and again I pick up an indie author and wish I'd known this author for a long time and read more of their works. Some of them are so underrated that I feel bad for them. I think Arlana Crane here is one such. She's definitely a woman with great vocabulary that I found smooth to read and a master storyteller with meticulous details she gives to her plot and characters.

Mordecai's Ashes is the first book to a new series featuring Karl Larsson and his teenage niece Kelsey, who is sharp as a whip. Karl is now out of job, out of a cheating marriage and basically homeless. So when the news of him inheriting his grandfather's Detective agency hits him, he decides to take it over and give a shot. Business is slow but its building up and Karl has all the time in the world. Old man Percy downstairs who is a friend of Mordecai is always there to help him.

Until one day, a journalist client of Mordecai visits the agency with a case that he now wants Karl to take over and investigate. It involves illegal drugs that are passed into Vancouver city through the Island, and harmful to kids using them. Apparently noone knows its origin and that's what Karl begins to find out. What follows is Karl's hard work and undercover operations to explore and find evidence to the mafia underworld which soon gets dangerous and out of hand. Will he be able to handle it without risking his life and the lives of other who depend on him before its too late?

Since it's the first book, Arlana takes it slow to introduce her characters, and let us grow with them as the story progresses. Karl is really likeable and he's proving to be a better PI and a quick learner and I expect to see more of his ventures in the series. Meanwhile it is Kelsey who kept me engaged. She has a fierce tongue and a no nonsense attitude that I completely enjoyed.

Mordecai's Ashes is a nice popcorn read that I snuggled up with on a cozy rainy day and escaped to the rainy locale of Vancouver. I'm glad that I had the pleasure to read this book and looking forward to reading more in the series. I received a complimentary copy from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.

Extensive forest cover; few main roads. Small waterfront towns and villages where everyone knows just about everyone else. Tourist sites and local pubs, but not many places to disappear. Doesn't sound like a prime spot for a heavy-weight drug ring to hide in plain sight. But that's just what Karl Larsson finds in Crane's debut novel. A drug bust is Larsson's first big case after inheriting his grandfather's investigation agency.

Divorced and a bit down on his luck, Karl grabs the chance to leave his combative, estranged family and take up residence in Victoria on Vancouver Island, Canada. Background checks and serving papers to deadbeat dads make up the bulk of Larsson’s initial cases. That is, until an investigative reporter from Vancouver comes calling about a drug cartel. Then, it’s a quick study in undercover methods for Larsson. Good thing he hires his young cousin, Kelsey, as his assistant to keep track of him. After reporting his findings to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, they recruit Larsson to continue his surveillance. What follows is quickly paced and engaging.

Arlana Crane’s depiction of the main characters, Karl and Kelsey Larsson, is spot on. Supporting characters Percy Meiklejohn and Alex Dyson also resound truthfully and strong. Hopefully, we'll see more of Meiklejohn and Dyson in future installments.

Kudos to Crane for the characterization and pacing in this debut in her Larsson Investigation series. Steady and quick pacing, with a bit of humor thrown in. I didn't want Mordecai's Ashes to end. Karl and Kelsey became friends. I've found myself two new private investigator companions.

In Mordecai’s Ashes, we meet divorced, ex oil-worker Karl Larsson, down on his luck and disengaged with his family. When he inherits a detective agency from the Grandfather he never knew, it gives him something focus on. Joined by his cousin, Kelsey, they throw themselves into the routine work. However, all that changes when a reporter with a personal grudge enlists Karl to investigate drug smuggling on Vancouver Island…

I found Mordecai’s Ashes to be a first-rate, gripping thriller. The opening chapter was slightly hesitant but the novel soon takes off and then it’s very hard to put down. Ms Crane sets up some juicy conflicts in the early stages and Karl is a very well-rounded, likeable main character with enough personal demons to maintain interest and empathy. Indeed, all of the characters are nicely drawn; understated yet individual. Kelsey could have been irritating but she becomes indispensable and written with a touch of tenderness so that you care about her almost as much as you do Karl. Gabe Ross is given a shade of the sinister from early on; small, simple physical details and nuances that betray him to the reader and yet there is a slight compassion in his portrayal that gives you pause. I thought Alex could have been developed further but I suspect she will reappear in subsequent books.

The plot was skilfully crafted for a novel forming the first in a series, giving enough backstory but retaining some ambiguity. When Karl begins to work undercover as a dockhand, the book really moves into fifth gear. The tension is absolutely nail-biting and yet the story does not become far-fetched. There are enough clever little twists that keep you guessing the further Karl becomes involved. I did not see the main twist coming and I think it was a wise move to include it near the end of the book; it would have spoiled the main plot had it come earlier and would have seemed a little unbelievable.

Mordecai’s Ashes contains some lovely, intelligent writing. The words flow warmly and comfortably across the page. The chapter where Karl attempts in buy drugs in a pub was richly alive with humour and thoughtful detail. I also loved the name of the other pub (Copper Owl) where Karl goes after work. Ms Crane’s love and knowledge for Canada shines through and despite myself knowing nothing about the Country, it felt instantly familiar and was an intrinsic part of the novel.
An engrossing, original and excellently-written thriller. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed everything about this well-written book and finished it within two days. The setting was my favourite, having lived on Vancouver Island during my childhood with multiple trips back over the years. Each small town or city mentioned was vivid in my mind, bringing me further into the story, and keeping me on the edge of my seat. Karl, the primary character is easy to like and to root for. He is determined to set things right and with the help of his cousin/assistant, Kelsey, a strong-minded young woman, they make an indomitable team. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading future books in this new series.

I’ve read this book three times now and would happily read it again. Mordecai’s Ashes is a great read with a bit of everything: action, adventure, humour, and family drama. I appreciated the intricacies of the case and yet it isn’t a laborious read like some detective novels. It’s also nice to have something Canadian based. Really good book.

Karl Larsson is shuffling aimlessly when he gets a call from his sister that his aunt Matilda passed away. Following the funeral and reading of her will, he is dumbfounded to discover he has inherited his grandfather’s (Mordecai’s) building and detective agency in Victoria, BC.

He’s young. He’s inexperienced, but the building and the agency gives him a direction. No license? No prob. What he is is a sympathetic protagonist, an underdog you’ll root for immediately. He’s a good kid. You can’t help but love him.

Then comes his cousin, Kelsey. She’s only 19—smart as a whip, intuitive, clever and enormously engaging. You might gain grudging respect for her--she earns it—time and again when she proves an invaluable resource for Karl. You can’t help but love her.

The author carefully introduces the circumstances building her characters background and a well-plotted drug running plot into a fast-paced and immersive storyline. The light-sided search and serve side of the detective agency moves along quietly until a journalist (a former client of Mordecai’s) comes with a very serious investigation and soon Karl is heavy into the case with the initial support of Kelsey. Until the case turns decidedly grim.

I enjoyed the description of the island and the little coastal BC communities. The author builds sympathy for Karl; he’s a quick study, but the reader becomes fearful for him as he succeeds in getting deeper into a situation that will not be easy to get out of. Kelsey speaks her mind with knee-jerk reaction and the reader is quickly drawn to her wit. She is a strong co-protagonist. Can Karl keep Kelsey safe, much less himself?

The narrative cruises into the conclusion and the dust settles quietly, until little plot points, threads, begin tying off. There were questions, issues to be resolved (after all, this is Book 1) and the reveal at the end is one that will elicit a satisfied chuckle. My only problem is the edit misses—but the story and characters really win the day. Brilliant twist. Master storyteller. I’m so looking forward to Book 2! 4.5/5 stars

Wow! When this author approached me about reviewing her novel I had no idea what a cracking read this was going to be!

Karl Larsson is out of a job and a home since his wife left him. At a loose end, he finds himself back on home turf and is just as surprised as the rest of the family to discover that he has inherited his grandfather's detective agency. With no job offers lining up, he decides to give it a go despite his complete lack of experience. Heading for Vancouver Island, Karl expects the work will mainly be small local jobs, but somehow that's not quite how it works out . . .

This is a first-class read; the writing is polished and accomplished and it's hard to believe this is the author's first published novel. As a stand-alone read it's gripping; as a first in series it is a thrilling introduction and I'm hoping that the second is on it's way as I can barely wait to get into it! A cleverly plotted story - one I could barely put aside and I read long into the early hours. I adored everything about it. The characters are beautifully crafted; so much so that if I ever travel to Vancouver Island I expect to find them there. There are bursts of humour which made me giggle (hard to do without making a noise or shaking the bed, trust me), but underneath it all is a serious crime story which had me in it's thrall to the very end. Arlana Crane is most definitely an author to follow - trust me on that. Absolutely earns every one of the five sparkling stars I'm so very happy to give it!

In her debut novel, talented author Arlana Crane combines everything fans of the genre love about detective novels with an interpersonal story that will appeal to every reader. She delivers vibrant, relatable characters with all the troubles of difficult families and lives complicated by universal misfortunes, yet delivers on the tension and action that fans of Agatha Christie and James Patterson expect and desire. I read this work in a single sitting and was only disappointed that book two of Larsson Investigations is not yet available on the market.

Crane's Canadian spelling of particular words overlays well on the setting for her novel, adding to the immersive experience rather than breaking immersion, and the government entities that interweave with the protagonist's early adventures as a private detective share enough commonality with their American counterparts to make it an easy mental conversion for American readers. More importantly, the author cleverly anchors the narrative in experiences that are universal - the expectations of family, the need to make important choices on intuition, and the proud and difficult struggle of self-reliance.

I was completely happy with Mordecai's Ashes and gladly recommend it to fans of Patricia Cornwell and Mickey Spillane, anyone with an interest in detective stories, and supporters of new authors. This novel is both a solid work of fiction on its own, and a promise of great things to come from this gifted writer.

An ex-oil worker with an ex-wife, Karl Larsson's life isn't looking too hot in the moment and it doesn't seem to be warming up anytime soon either. When he finds out he's inherited his grandfather's PI agency from his Aunt Matilda's will, it looked like he was finally getting his ticket out of his current miserable situation.

With his previous job on the rigs, the detective and private investigations field is worlds away from his what's he's used to, but it's new and it's exciting and it's a job...and he now OWNS the business too!

Karl takes on small cases at first and eventually hires his cousin, Kelsey to help him with the work. He quickly begins to get settled into his new job and life until he meets his grandfather's old friend and client, a reporter named John Fullerton who hires Karl for his first major job, to investigate the rumors of a drug smuggling ring. It's not long before Karl realizes he's in over his head with this job and now he's too deep into the case to back out.

An engaging and thrilling book, there are some very tense and suspenseful scenes. Karl doesn't have any experience as a PI and he'll be doing these runs alone with his cousin as the backup in terms of strategy. But physically, he will be alone with no proper backup. There's danger lurking in all corners and there are times you must hold your breath to see what happens and if Karl will be safe. I loved this book with its bits of comedic relief scenes thrown in. There's a major twist in the end of the book that I got a huge kick out of.

Well written characters, Mordecai's Ashes takes place in Canada and you get to explore a bit of how the government/police works there as well as getting to know about Vancouver Island. An exciting read with smooth writing that flows well, I really enjoyed this book! 5/5

In a work of crime fiction like this where a detective (whether pro or amateur) is trying to find out who has committed or (as in this case) is committing crimes, the biggest part of the appeal, what keeps you reading, is waiting for the investigator to catch the wrong doer(s). Not to mention wondering how he or she is going to do that, but also who it is going to be. Mordecai’s Ashes has all of that. But it has more.

Part of that “more” are the detectives (Karl who is assisted, much more than he probably anticipated, by his cousin Kelsey) who are completely new to this and still finding their way. As the series progresses, I expect that part will settle down, but it adds to this first installment. Karl has inherited his grandfather’s detective agency, a man he really never knew, nor realized was a private investigator. In fact, with a recent divorce and family who are only looking out for themselves, with the exception of cousin Kelsey, Karl’s non-work life isn’t going so well, so making a go of this new opportunity that just fell in his lap is even more critical than it would be for most people, and as a reader I felt it.

This was a good entertaining read in a new series from a new author. I’m looking forward to future books in the series. A twist near the end has me curious about where things are going to go from here.

I love this book . There definitely is a lot going for it. It’s a murder mystery based on Vancouver Island Canada written by a Calgary author and that itself is one of the best things but the story is really well done and well thought out. The author really knows her stuff. I enjoyed the whole story and learned about the fishing industry. And how easy it would be to bring Drugs in by boat to an island that has too much coastline to monitor.

I believe this is the authors first book and I would recommend it for sure as well as I will be looking out for her second installment Of the series.

The characters were well developed and interacted as they should. The story kept you interested quite well through the whole book I didn’t find any areas where I wanted to flip pages forward or even put the book down I thought it was that good. And I don’t say that a lot with first books

Really enjoyed this book. Would have liked a little more in-depth back story on the various characters. Karl inherits a detective agency and learns the business with his quirky cousin, Kelsey. Karl is a likable guy who just wants to do the right thing but ends up undercover with a drug operation. His doubts and mistakes make him a realistic character. Kelsey is a smart young woman who is much more mature than her years in some ways and at the same time shows the impulsiveness and lack of experience of a teenager. Great story that showcases Vancouver Island and its beauty. Loved the surprise ending.

The story is set on Vancouver Island and the unfolding of the mystery felt like a mini-vacation. The details depicted in Karl's journey makes it all feel as though I was actually there. I enjoyed following all the characters and there are plot twists with many fun jabs of humor and wit thrown into every page to keep me amused. What a fun and fulfilling read, I'm looking forward to the next case!

Crime fiction is not normally a genre I gravitate too, but I really enjoyed this book! The plot intrigued me from the start and it just gets better and better as the story progresses. I love the characters and the author really captures the "essence" and beauty of Vancouver Island where the story takes place. I will eagerly wait for the release of the second book! :)

I truly enjoyed this investigative mystery. The attention to detail helped paint a clear picture of a Detectives’ life in Canada and especially the evolvement of the Detectives relationships with his family. The ending was perfect for a sequel and genuinely will leave you wanting to read more. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author!

I loved the authenticity of this book, with place names I recognize. This is not the type of book I usually read but I was caught up in the story, intrigued by the characters and the plot which wrapped up just right. I was glad to see it was "Book 1" and I will be watching for Book 2. This was an enjoyable read without a complicated cast of characters to keep track of, easy to resume reading if you have to put it down.

I really liked this book. I loved the writing and the characters. It did get a bit dull in the middle but it picked up again. A great ending for a series book - it makes me want to read the next one.

The only thing I couldn’t handle was all of the spelling and spacing errors. I don’t understand why this seems to be such a big struggle for books nowadays especially when word processing software has spellcheck and grammar checks built right in. It cost this book a star for me.

So the above error has been fixed by Arlana! I’ve re-read this book after waiting for a time to forget a lot of it. I stand by my original review however, now that the spelling and grammar errors are fixed I am adding back a star and now rating it at 4 stars!

The only errors now are some spacing errors that can be easily deciphered and ignored.

With Mordecai's Ashes, Arlana Crane launches her new Larsson Investigations series, set on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Karl Larsson has lost his job in the Alberta oil fields and his wife, but he just inherited a detective agency in Victoria, BC. With nothing to lose and a lot to learn, he sets out to solve a mystery or two, his 19 year old cousin Kelsey as his sidekick. There are plenty of twists and turns, lots of PNW atmosphere, and a terrific story to keep the pages turning. All in all, Mordecai's Ashes is a fine kick off for what looks like a very entertaining series. It's always fun to start at the beginning.

I am seriously impressed! This book was an amazing read. I really enjoy thrillers/mystery stories, and this book did not disappoint. It is really well-written. The dialogue, pace, story structure and descriptions are very good. I find it hard to believe this is the author's first novel. I can hardly wait for the next installment of the Larsson Investigations series.

Take a dysfunctional family, add an unexpected will and an out-of-work, heartbroken recipient to the will and what do you have? A rollicking good mystery. The characters are so true to life one would think they lived next door. Loved the cousin whom I felt was the mortar to the bricks in the story. She held everything together and gave me a good laugh as well. Old Mordecai had the last laugh when he left his business to his grandson. This is a great, easy read for the mystery lover who wants to relax and spend time in a Canadian setting.

In addition to reading detective stories for their depiction of landscape, I also look for stories of people starting over, which seems to be a common theme. Perhaps it is the case that people who suddenly don't know their future take up detecting to find a path for themselves and in the process solve other mysteries. Something for me to think about! This is a good story with some likable, believable characters. It didn't "zing" with me, but I am glad I read it.
