This is one of the rare non-BL and all-ages manga drawn by Kusama Sakae sensei, a collection of lovely short stories (14+2 chapters) published between 2008 to 2013. The story titles are from traditional Japanese poems 和歌 waka and 短歌tanka, with reference to 万葉集 Man'yōshū. I highly recommend this manga to anyone interested in Japanese history and culture, it will cleanse and sooth your soul.
A young boy 敬 moved from Tokyo to the countryside with his mom and maids at the beginning of Showa-era after the parents divorced. he’s experiencing the changing seasons in the mountain with his new friends from school, hearing about folklores and superstitious customs, growing up and understanding human and the nature.
In this village where everyone’s know each other forever, the kids are especially cruel to 彌七 a young man dressed in white gown working for the new monk at the temple in the mountain. The kids would create myth about him being non-human (demon fox or Tengu) and throw rocks at him, but 敬 becomes friends with 彌七 and knows he’s a kind and caring human.
敬 knows that his dad hasn’t written letter to his mom since they moved, his mom’s sick and stays at home everyday, so 敬 would pick flowers from the mountain to cheer her up, as well as tell her stories about his adventures with 彌七.
In the end 敬 introduced 彌七 to his mom, he admitted that was adopted by the temple when he’s a baby, probably had mixed parents. The mom appreciate him accompanying the son and will help to spread the word and let others accept 彌七.
