Double Trouble: Showtime at Castlewood Manor (My American Almost-Royal Cousin Series #5 ) Firebird Book Awards Winner: Amateur Sleuths, Cozy Mystery, Travel Suspense!
American Marchioness and mummy-to-be Lady Gemma Lancaster Williams is up to her maternity toes with the soon to be completed renovations at Cherrywood Hall and the planning for the Prince of Kingwood Ball, a royal, society event. The startling find of a skeleton in the construction zone brings renovations to a grinding halt. History is about to get a big royal wake-up call with this ghoulish find, as scandals from the past are revealed.
Gemma’s college friend, interior designer extraordinaire, Rikkhe St. Claire has an eye for clues and a nose for trouble, helping Gemma uncover deadly details from years gone by. A new nanny’s in the halls of Cherrywood—will Figgy McEwen’s psychic conversations with the ghost whisperers from the past lead Scotland Yard to fiends most foul?
Chaos on the film set of the Castlewood Manor movie lead to more than one deadly demise—are they accidents? Or pre-meditated?
Royal diaries, international intrigue, a film’s future, and meddling friends and family bring these scandalous happenings to a head. Gemma, hunky-dunky, hubby Kyle, and new doggie of the manor, Teddy are definitely in for double trouble in this almost-royal who dun nit like no other!
Veronica Cline Barton earned graduate degrees in both engineering and business and has had successful careers in the software and technology industries. Her lifelong love affair with British murder mysteries inspired her to embark on a literary career.
She loves all things glamorous; royals, acting, fashion (emphasis on boots and crowns) and loads of yummy foods and cocktails. When not traveling and spinning mystery yarns, she lives in California with her husband, Bruce, and her two cats, Daisy and Ebbie.
The Crown for Castlewood Manor is the first book in the My American Almost Royal Cousin Series, followed by Cast, Crew, & Carnage; the Filming of Castlewood Manor; Deadly Receptions, the Debut of Castlewood Manor; Mistletoe and Mayhem, Yuletide at Castlewood Manor and Double Trouble: Showtime at Castlewood Manor.
Double Trouble: Showtime at Castlewood Manor is a delightful, cozy mystery treat that continues the storyline (My American Almost-Royal Cousin Series #5) of Gemma, a modern woman in love who lives on a beautiful British estate with her husband, lest I forget a royal husband.
Kyle is not only handsome, but he’s incredibly thoughtful and romantic. Dare we swoon yet? On the “I wish he was my husband registry,” Sir Kyle would break the curve.
There is always a lot of champagne, fantastic fashion and yummy food courtesy of Mama’s romantic partner Chef Karl. (Mama is a famous Hollywood film star and Gemma’s fantastic mother as well.) The list of memorable characters and scandalous conundrums will keep you smiling. Lavish parties, cocktail hour, a film set with cast and crew and fantasy life are the perfect tonic for the escapist mystery and women’s fiction reader.
But there are also new characters (babies on board) and relationships on the horizon. Two new adult characters round out the memorable cast. One is a city sophisticate and the other a down-to-earth and quirky young woman who has psychic gifts from the great beyond.
The best thing about this series is that you will feel as if you live in a British mansion and are a personal guest at the over the top parties and hob-knobbing with royalty. There are a few dead bodies though, so watch out for envy, revenge and good old-fashioned jealousy… I would be remiss not to mention there is also magic, love, family interference and loads of fun.
I have read the entire series and just love feeling like part of the story as Gemma and Kyle move into another important phase of their fairy-tale relationship together.
Perhaps Aunt Pippa and Nanny Figgy will be sure that life always carries a little magic too? Start from the beginning of the series and relish every page.
This is the fifth book in the series and i enjoyed this one even more than the others. The plush Royals are at it again, with Gemma heavily pregnant with twins, the castle renovations and the recovery of an skeleton on the grounds. ... a wonderful combination for a murder mystery. Throw in the new Scottish nanny Figgy, fine dining, glamour and black ties, this really is a wonderful feel-good story. With wonderful, well developed characters, the loving Kyle, the ongoing filming of the TV series, this book has it all. Well written with a stiff upper lip and light-hearted, I highly recommend this series. Please check it out or add it to your list of must reads. Well done to this much talented author.
A rich experience – literally! If you have ever wondered what it’s like to rub shoulders with the aristocracy and want to experience how the other half lives, the ‘My American Almost-Royal Cousin’ series is sure to satisfy your appetite. In book five we meet the familiar cast of likeable characters, along with some interesting new faces, as renovations get under way at Cherrywood Hall in preparation for the filming of the TV series and the Prince of Kingwood Ball Royal society event. Mistress of Cherrywood and now the newly titled Marchioness of Kent, Gemma is heavily pregnant with twins. An exciting prospect for her and loving husband Sir Kyle, it heralds the arrival of a Scottish nanny by the name of Figgy. The name suits this colourful character, who also possesses a psychic gift - her appearance timely, following the discovery of a skeleton in the grounds of Cherrywood Hall. And so begins the unfolding of a mystery that dates back to the 1930s and involves Gemma’s aunt Pippa. Written with her usual panache, the author delights us with her vivid descriptions of the lavish furnishings, gourmet treats and fabulous fashions, not to mention the breath-taking ideas for the renovations that take place. Apart from all the glitz and glamour, this entertaining story is sure to appeal to lovers of cosy mysteries everywhere and, though it can be read as a standalone novel, I urge you to read the whole series in order to appreciate the wealth of wonderful characters. Well done Ms Cline Barton on another resounding success!
Castlewood Manor, a beautiful estate in England, is the perfect setting for elegance, sophistication, family and mystery. And that’s what this fifth book in the series encompasses. The story’s prologue recounts a murder that occurred in 1934 at Castlewood Manor. As the story begins, we are quickly brought back to current times and our heroine, American Marchioness Lady Gemma Lancaster Williams. Gemma is married to the dashing Sir Kyle and is very pregnant with twins. They are attending a palace garden party hosted by the Queen.
With that beginning in mind, I hoped that a wonderful story would enfold, and I got my wish. And don’t worry. If some of the characters from other books in the series grabbed your fancy, many are back. They provide a feeling of coziness and connection. We’re also introduced to Figgy McEwen. This very capable, Scottish gal is hired as a nanny for the twins and is a delightful addition to the series. She’s not only witty and fun, but she also brings a sense of other-worldly psychic connections to the story.
I found myself happily lost in this newest addition to the series. Everything from the tantalizing food to the lavish furnishings whisked me away, once again, to a luxurious world across the pond. At the same time, there were secrets and intrigue to investigate, an inviting family to care about, and a murder to solve. I gave it five stars in all departments!
Five books into the ‘My American Almost-Royal Cousin’ series, and Veronica Cline-Barton shows no signs of flagging. The customary energy, wit and heartache which has been present in the first four books is still very much evident – so ‘heir’ we go again! The author remains faithful to her characters, and that is probably why we feel comfortable and engaged with them. On this outing, we delve into the past. Construction works have unearthed a skeleton at Cherrywood Hall, triggering a Cluedo-esque plotline – along with big helpings of scandal, skulduggery on a movie-shoot, general gossiping nosiness and, of course, lots of royal entitlement. (Plus, babies and pregnancy hormones on high alert: “It felt like the twins were doing jumping jacks on my bladder”.) Put your wits to the test, and be careful you don’t slip on the red herrings. “Beware of the dame.” Highly recommended for lovers of cosy mystery fun and regal splendour.
The fifth Castlewood Manor story. The American Marchioness - Lady Gemma Lancaster Williams is heavily pregnant with twins. New building work is commencing at Castlewood Manor and with it comes a new diabolical conundrum. This time events from over eighty years past, surface to cause further murderous intrigue. It throws the acting cast of Cherrywood film productions into mayhem as devious killing rears its ugly head. The surrounding aristocracy is also bewildered. Another good 'whodunnit' murder, mystery, and suspense that culminates in front of the reader in a very dramatic and unforeseen fashion.
Cline Barton has created a magical world on a vast estate with an endearing cast of characters. While there is always suspense and a murder or two, she still manages to weave in family and romantic moments. This book, like her others, is well written with a strong plot and an engaging cast of characters. Her writing parachutes you into Cherrywood Hall so that you feel like you are there.
The action never stops. Yet, the moments of humour and romance flow effortlessly throughout the story, along with the suspense and tension. Cline Barton manages to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout, avidly hunting down clues with the characters and trying to determine who is the murderer.
You quickly become immersed in the story, surrounded by a cast of characters that feel like old friends. The new characters introduced ingratiate themselves and, at times, make you a touch suspicious. But you have to meet Nanny Figgy, who has Aunt Pippa's seal of approval and who wouldn't want her ghostly support.
Then finally, there is the introduction of Gemma and Kyle's offspring, the icing on the cake. This book is a must-read book.
"Double Trouble: Showtime at Castlewood Manor" reunites readers with friends and family of the My American Almost-Royal Cousin series. In this extremely fun 5th installment, an oh-so-pregnant Gemma and Kyle are eagerly awaiting the birth of twins. There's barely a moment to rest, though, between renovations, royal events, solving a possibly scandalous old murder, and investigating a new series of mysteriously dangerous mishaps. Author Cline Barton is at the top of her writing game in weaving another wonderful tale of romance and mystery that is as elegant as it is intriguing. It's downright difficult not to become attached to the beloved characters of this series to the point of being anxious about their welfare when foul play is afoot. And, in this story, we have the delightful addition of paranormal nanny Figgy McEwen to savor as a new friend and favorite. It's amazing how easily the author whisks us away on an immersive adventure that feels as if you've actually been away with close friends. (Yes, the gender reveal made me misty this time around.) A highly recommended book in an outstanding series for fans of all things royal, romantic, and murder most foul!
This novel is unique in some ways. We have a queen who plans to give her throne to her son, a mad woman who became more unstable as the story goes, and babies being born. Toss in a royal family to the mix and add to aspects of the UK royal family yet written completely different. Nothing is meant as anything bad royal or otherwise. This royal family was able to work out a narrative that fit right into this five star book.
I hope by now you have all ready discovered the My American Almost-Royal Cousin series. We are up to book 5, but don’t despair about catching up-this is the best book so far and entirely enjoyable as a stand-alone. If you’ve been enthralled with the series, as I have, then you know that Gemma is an amazing American gal who started a new adventure in Jolly Olde and is now the Marchioness of Lancaster, and mistress of Cherrywood Hall. She has a handsome husband, Sir Kyle and a dazzling actor Mama, Jillian, who stars in the popular new show, Castlewood Manor (loosely based on Downton Abbey).
Book 5 features all the motifs that we we have come to love and expect. There are plenty of friends, Royal and society, who come and go, bringing laughter and fun. Some new faces appear- who are quite appealing, interior designer Rikkhe St. Claire, and the “uncanny nanny” Figgy McEwen, as well as a new darling doggie. Gourmet food, entertaining with events big and small, and fabulous clothes abound and enrapture us. The most fun is the massive rebuilding and redecorating at Cherrywood Hall-truly sumptuous and I swooned over every detail. I agree that the gang has achieved a new heights of castle-chic living. And the spirit of Aunt Pippa watches over it all
So, what’s with the Double Trouble? The discovery of a skeleton is just the start of the series of murders that must be solved. Intriguing history from the 1930’s comes in to play, which leads to a major joint-nation crime collaboration between the UK and US. Pippa and a Lady from the past are also on the mission to solve the crimes that even reach to the Royal family. Oh the toil and troubles! But the best “Double” is that Lady Gemma is expecting twins. Thank goodness she has spicy cornbread with jalapeño jelly to give her strength. (Doesn’t that sound yummy?) Jillian will henceforth be known as “Glammie” and we hope that everyone at Cherrywood Hall lives happily ever after.
This book is all aglitter with great characters, a fun plot and so many delightful details. I hope you spot the clever reverence to current events- oh that was a good one! I highly recommend this book and the series! Well done Lady Veronica Cline Barton.
