Trope: Marriage of Convenience
Characters: Pirate Hero, Ruined Heroine, Impoverished Heroine
Hotness: 🔥🔥 explicit but some are short
Plot: Hero was a pirate turned captain and came back to England to demand loan payment. Darius knew Eliza from youth, a Duke's daughter who fell from grace who strives to take care of her siblings. Their situation has a lot of secrets and revelations and it's a depressing matter to deal with. Darius and his men have to guard and protect them eventually. Darius and Eliza got married , tried to leave to America but then a lot of action happened. Dramatic like a movie scene.
What I Like : I love the characters and their personalities, chemistry was lacking but Good story line save it all.

Well what a surprise this book has been. Far from the traditional historical romance set in the English countryside and swimming with the aristocracy dressed to the nines and drowning in jewels, Slide Into Ruin brings us a story of debt and disgrace. It’s written with wit and humour though there are also moments of tenderness and grief.
Eliza Penfold is a truly admirable heroine. The daughter of a Duke who has run the family into abject poverty before dying, she has held her family together, cared for her siblings and done all in her power to protect them. This lady is a fierce mother hen and I truly felt for her as she faced one challenge after another.
Darius, the bastard son of the Earl of Wickham, is a hero I warmed to immediately. He is a good man trying to make his way in the world honestly while owning his pirate past. I wanted to kick him for thinking he was not good enough for Eliza when he’d gone to great lengths to protect her and her siblings.
This story kept me on my toes. There were debtors, debt collectors and a host of nefarious characters all out to profit from Eliza and her siblings. While I had an inkling of how things might unfold, I really didn’t know for sure. I was on the edge of my seat at times as one awful thing after another was thrown at Eliza.

‘The Slide into Ruin‘ is the second title in the ‘Daughters of Disgrace‘ series, and kept me flipping pages (and smiling) from beginning to the end… and maybe a bit beyond for this couple’s banter could be wicked or sweet depending on the moment. So, yeah, I was easily hooked once again by a book in this series.
Eliza and Darius are a couple that while they might seem on opposite sides of any argument or bantering moment, they each are dealing with what life had handed them in the only ways they knew how… at the time. Now, pushed into a marriage of perhaps inconvenience, they will have to find the way to co-exist, foil the bad guys, and maybe admit that falling in love isn’t as crazy of an idea as one might think.
I adored Eliza and her fierce protection of her family, at any cost. And it was so easy to fall a bit in love with Darius who wants to be seen as the big, bad pirate but he’s a protector of the weak (especially a lady in need of protection) whether he wants to admit to that or not it still remains true. Watching them banter, fight an attraction that seems destined, and face down the evil coming for them… all the while falling in love, was an emotional, at times an intense journey.
Most of what you’d really want to know before picking up ‘The Slide into Ruin‘ can be found in the Cover Description blurb. I don’t want to spoil the book for others with many details – except to say how much I enjoyed this couple and their story. If you love a good Historical Romance with dashes of danger, a stubborn couple, and having a front-row seat as two people who are so right for each other give into falling in love… and meaning it, then you’ll want to pick this one up – soon. I had such a good time in this story, and I’m betting that if you love a good Historical Romance then you will, too.

The Slide into Ruin is the second book in the Daughters of Disgrace Series as well as the second book for me to read written by Bronwyn Stuart. This marriage of convenience story has so much wit, sass and winning characters. Life may have been just as complicated in the past as it is now but the author makes it seem so entertaining. Yes characters are in difficult situations and dire straits but still able to bring humor.
Please tell me this series is being made into movies or a TV series. Hot pirates or ex-pirate in this case. Damsels who refuse to sit by and just be rescue but contribute to any scheme being made with grit and zest for life. No wonder the hot hunks fall for them. Add in supporting character that are endearing, in this case it is Eliza’s siblings, you have a captivating story.

DNF at 60%
After trying to read this book for a few weeks, I have decided to dnf it. I really loved the beginning of this novel; Eliza was such an amazing heroine who would do absolutely anything for her family. However, it just seemed that everything that could go wrong did go wrong....over and over and over again. I loved the tension and dynamic between Eliza and Darius that was present when they first met, but I felt like their relationship got overshadowed by all of these horrible instances of bad luck and hidden truths. Even at 60%, I still felt like their relationship hadn't developed as much as I hoped, so now I am officially walking away from this one.

I really enjoyed this story. It was the traditional historical romance with a bit a mystery and murder. Darius thinks he is not good enough for any woman. His life went down a bad path even though he is a good man now. Eliza has been thrown into a position that no English daughter of an Earl should ever be in. Now she trying to keep her siblings safe. When she runs into Darius they both decide that they can be helped by the other. Although the truth is bent a bit in the beginning, I enjoyed getting to know Darius' character and watching Eliza experience some happiness for herself. Great read.

A tale that kept me captivated and reluctant to return to real life and leave the dilemmas of Darius and Eliza.
I loved The Road To Ruin and I can not wait for the next book in the series.

Engaging story, historical inaccuracies
The author needs to bone up on her research. A duke's daughter is Lady (name), not Miss (name). The eldest son of a duke is a marquess, and automatically becomes duke when his father dies. There are other inaccuracies as well. The heroine of this story is a dunce, a flaming idiot. Despite those flaws, the story captured and held my interest.

I admit I read this one because I found the title absolutely hilarious and couldn't resist. And the two main characters knew each other as children but then the hero went off and was a pirate for a while and the heroine lost her inheritance and is in big trouble. Great potential for a fun read but the setup is convoluted and awkward and goes on endlessly. I'm nearly halfway done and they haven't really settled into things yet. Gonna give up. But the title earns all the stars.

I was going to give this four stars, but I wanted way more from the end. Also, that epilogue? It was just a set up for the next book. It had nothing to do with Darius and Eliza, no glimpse into their future, etc. It was from another character's perspective, who we hadn't ever gotten his pov before, all about how screwed he was. Not a good note to end on.

Story starts out with Darius and he's arrived back home. Others think he died on the ship, in the water or another way but he survived to prove to his father he could make something of himself. He approaches the house and stumbles onto a woman who's on the snowy ground. She was trying to get the children a tree for the holiday. Her father is nowhere to be found and he hopes to get paid for taking over the debt. So desolate and no food Eliza starves herself so the children can stay nourished.
He soon learns the truth and comes up with a scheme so he can be the hero. She conspires with him so she won't have to wed the guardian her father had picked out for them. So many mysteries and scenes that are torturous to read about. When the guardian finally comes she has to leave with him because of the mistrust she has for Dariou. Eliza leaves but is banished away. Darius learns of the fires on the docks and you wonder with all the gunpowder if he will ever find her, in time or dead already....
They shared many nights in love with one another and hot adult scenes. Love that she took care of all her siblings through it all while those her father owed money to are at their door. Great read.

Lies, Lust and Lunacy
I have mixed feelings about this lengthy book. I liked some parts and was annoyed by others.
First off, The Slide into Ruin was mostly well written by Bronwyn Stuart, however there were way too many (for my taste) pages of introspection.
Secondly, it had vibrant lead personalities that I liked and disliked, and supporting players that occasionally stole the scene from the H/h.
Thirdly, the story did have action, angst and passion, it just didn't quite make it into the realistic winner's circle. It started off pretty well, but is kept moving in and out of believable.
Lastly, although I mostly liked the dialogue, descriptions and action, I was disappointed with the rather skimmed over ending and even more disappointed with the epilogue.

A well-written full length story of adventure, trickery, ruin, and romance. In a rather complex plot, Eliza has faked her father's wellness to buy time until her brother comes of age to inherit the title. However, several are in pursuit of her dowry, not trusting to marry since she is caring for her several siblings. Darius, the ex pirate is in dire need of money and probably the best prospect since he promises to care for the family while attempting to right several wrongs. Tricking Eliza into marriage causes additional problems. The novel is well-written, complex with ongoing scenarios and very long in length with some gore and much steaminess.

While the antagonists were definitely of the "tie them to the tracks as I twirl my mustache" variety, the leads were not completely ridiculous and over-dramatic. I found myself really rooting for them to work things out. The reason this doesn't get more than three stars, besides the antagonists, is because the tie-ins with other books by way of cameo was very clunky. I could tell they were supposed to be from the series, but not having read any of it, it came across as very heavy-handed.

I kept trying to finish it but I just can’t. It’s just not a story that makes sense and I got to 72% and decided since I’ve not been reading to avoid reading this, it’s time to DNF. I enjoyed the first book, will not be reading the third. I did try to find spoilers to know what happens to the dad and brother but honestly if I have to read the word bastard one more time I may chuck my kindle across the room.

This book was hard to get through and I must say that the heroine, to me was most silly and made many ridiculous decisions. I agree with another reviewer about making such a big deal about his birth. Also the whole story just seemed not to make a lot of sense at all

The only reason I finished this book was because I hate not finishing books.
For what ever reason it just would not hold my attention and the characters did not capture me.
Overall however the writing style and tone is good just not for me.

Worth the read…
I will admit I skipped about 50 or so pages in the middle of this book because it got slow. The story was good, but the author got bogged down in details. However the final chapters captured my attention and I am glad I managed to finish the book.

Exciting read
I enjoyed this book, it certainly kept you on your toes, wondering what was going to happen next. It had a little bit of heat but overall a fantastic story and great characters.

Fabulous regency romance but without the ballrooms and glamour. Two people down on their luck meet and try to navigate the murky waters of scandal together. It has been a while since book 1 but I was okay to read without refreshing. I liked the main characters and how they looked after others. I liked the ex-pirate angle and accepting one’s worth. A lovely story and will definitely be reading book 3.

This book had my favorite tropes so it was not surprising that I liked it. I liked the storyline and the characters.

Our FMC, Eliza was an admirable woman. At such a young age, she was saddled with the responsibility of caring for her four younger siblings and a negligent father. I admired her strength and resilience. I'm glad she got the HEA she deserved.

Our MMC, Darius. A man with a past. I admired that he was working hard to become a better person. In the beginning of the book, he was talking about how he wanted someone to protect, he found that and more. I liked how he cherished and protected Eliza and her siblings. I really liked him.

Both Eliza and Darius were perfect for each other. I loved reading this book and how their relationship blossomed. I read it in a couple of hours. The only thing I would have wanted was a better epilogue.
