America’s traditional values of liberty and equality have recently been overshadowed by a new ideal: diversity. This ideal claims that group differences matter more than commonalities, personal freedom, and individual rights.
In Diversity: The Invention of a Concept, Wood told the story of how this hitchhiker on the Constitution has gained popularity since the 1970s. Diversity Rules covers what happened after Justice Sandra Day O’Connor bestowed the Supreme Court’s kiss of legitimacy on diversity in 2003. O’Connor opened the door to the promotion of identity politics, open borders, global citizenship, and the Green New Deal. More than a legal principle, diversity is a cultural edict that attempts to tell us who we are and how we should live.
Incredible short read! Wish everyone in America, in the church, in education would read this. So many great explanations and concepts presented in a concise way:
“It is well to keep in mind that diversity, though it basks in the glow of its supposed tolerance and indulgence of disparate views, is really another soft totalitarianism. And a not-so-soft totalitarianism when it has picked out its scapegoats and it’s perennial enemies.
“The Southern Poverty Law Center specializes in exaggerating the number of adherents to the ideology, and to that end lists many organizations as ‘white nationalist hate groups’ that are merely supporters of traditional American values or conservative politics.”
Diversity is the make-believe doctrine of recovered innocence………and the coded speech in which members of a privileged group acknowledge one another.
Diversity in the academy is purported to be about bridge-building and broadening peoples experiences. It has had the opposite effect: dividing society, reducing learning, and creating an oppositional mindset that prevents individuals from seizing the opportunity that is available to them.
The diversity doctrine has the unfortunate flaw that it is educational nonsense. The color of a students skin or the emotional energy he has invested in a racial identity makes no contribution to the quality of education on offer at a college or university…… conservatives want individuals to be treated as individuals on the basis of their merits.
Hxrstory=History (without “patriarchy”🤣)
“Diversity has instead become code for a social order organized as a hierarchy of victimization. The more victimized a group can claim to be, the higher its status in the diversity world. This hierarchy of course sets victim groups against each other in the struggle for a relative status. There is no official scorekeeper but it is not hard to see the competition.”
“Diversity points to a rationale for favoring particular groups, multiculturalism conjures a vision of modern states that have accommodated themselves to a condition in which cultural divisiveness is the norm. Inclusion is a sly word that generally means lowering standards to accommodate those who can’t meet them. Social justice is the doctrine of elevating group identity as the principal ground for redistributing wealth and other social goods. Equity is the idea that those who have less of a particular good have a moral claim on others for a larger share.”
Good update on diversity insanity since Wood’s first book includes discussion of Obama’s Janus-like approach...my only regret is that this book isn’t longer.
