Well you could tell this was the author's first children's book (she is a British university professor) because of the content of the stories, i.e. a fair amount of matricide, patricide, and random killing (not terribly graphic but still there). Granted Greek mythology stories are full of these and that's cool, just maybe aim the book towards middle grade or teen if that's the case. I enjoyed the selection of stories they included and a lot of them were ones that my son had never heard before, which is what I was aiming for, as his knowledge of Greek mythology was pretty limited at school and since we were reading all the Rick Riordan Greek books, it made sense for him to know a little bit more about the background stories. I liked that the whole book of stories was tied together by a map and two main characters, aka Night Owl (the grandfather) and Little Owl (his granddaughter), and that it included lgbtq characters as well. Also I loved the outside cover illustrations and the inside illustrations were gorgeous as well. Recommended for ages 9-12, 4 stars.
A pretty good introduction to Greek mythology for children - all the info, none of the adult content. The illustrations are beautiful and really add to the stories. I like how everything is linked with a pair of owls “narrating” throughout, it helps the stories make sense in association with each other. My only issue is the differences in length, with some stories spanning many pages while others are only a few paragraphs - makes me wonder how much detail has been missed out. I definitely want to read an adult version now for more detail!

I love reading myths and this book was a wonderful find. Something new and different since I studied the Ancient Civilisations with my two older boys. Looking forward to comparing this beautiful book to another myth collection that is waiting at the library.
The book groups stories in terms of places, but this is confusing when you are reading about someone again who died several stories ago. Great artwork.
i love the honest and tasteful way the author handled the themes of greek mythology. the illustrations are warm and exciting. what a great way to introduce children to the rich stories of ancient greece. i do not share the criticism that it is too gruesome of a children's book. of course not suited for preschoolers, this book could be read by anyone starting at the age of 9/10 years old.
looking forward to read this with my children one day
