Wicked smart, stubborn and emotional, Sandy Yuhi lives life by the seat of her pants. She has been kicked out or walked out on every role-playing game in a fifty-mile radius. Her last chance to participate in the hobby she loves to hate so much lies in the hands of Joe, the new Dungeon Master in town. But when Joe’s supernatural setting makes her confront her fears, Sandy’s faith in her real world choices shatters. Will earning the trust and love of the Dungeon Master give her the strength to stand up to her ex? Will her Damphir rogue’s, Nozomi’s, romance with the party’s bard, Strider, fill the hole in her heart? Full of action, supernatural creatures, magic, romance and lust. Sandy’s parallel adventures through the supernatural underground and modern day will make you think, love, and cheer!
Currently living in England, Kate Messick is married with three cats and two degrees in classical music. She enjoys everything clarinet, lifting weights, reading, playing games, and traveling.
From a young age, Kate’s dad read all sorts of fantasy books aloud to his daughters. Eventually, she figured out this reading stuff on her own and found her insatiable hunger for dragons and stories only grew with the years.
Living an exciting life, Kate is never afraid to reach for the stars. She founded the Symphonic Anime Orchestra and traveled with her music all over the US. Over the years, Kate has collected a diverse resume working in education, road construction, spinal technician, data mining, security escort, and more. Her life philosophy: Life is short, never be afraid to spice it up.
Sandy had never lasted long as part of a d&d team. It might have had something to do with her inability to bend rules while knowing the rule books back to front, or maybe it was her abrasive personality. She didn't play well with others, but this group was different. Willing to be flexible with her difficulties and help her grow. Things were going well, in the game and in life, until her boss and ex-boyfriend decide he wants her back and will go to any lengths, even blackmail, to make her his.
Rolling for Love is a romantic RPG/ real-life alternating fiction written by Kate Messick. I have to say I really enjoyed the mechanics of this book, two stories in one you have real-life and in-game which create a unique opportunity for all the characters to grow in both game and life and watching Sandy blossom as a character drawing on lessons and relationships was brilliant. As a lover of fantasy and LitRPG, I enjoyed the mingling of the fantasy world and the tabletop gaming aspect that will appeal to readers seeking fantasy adventure, real characters, magic, and romance.
Fantasy mixed with romance is what I love! Being able to combine both genres is very impressive! Being a gamer back when I was in high school, and early in my community college years, it was a book that I was able to understand for sure. I thought the book was going to belong due to the MANY chapters but it went by in no time. The main character in the story, Sandy...wow what a character and what she goes through in the story. The main antagonist in the book made my stomach turn to make me wish I could jump into the book and punch him! Like made my blood boil! How Sandy and her new pals are playing D&D. I am curious and will read the next book following. It was easy to follow, and understand. Well done!
Full confession: I’ve never played Dungeons and Dragons or any similar games. I downloaded this book by Katie Vedder because I loved the cover and no matter what your mother told you as a child you CAN always judge a book by the cover… I loved this book! It was fun, full of adventure, like crazy adventure and romance! I’ll admit I was slightly bamboozled with all the different elements but I went with the flow and in the ended really enjoyed the story. I liked that the book wrapped everything up as well between Sandy, Dillon and Joe but then I realized that there’s another book in the series… can’t wait to see where they go next.
I enjoyed reading Rolling for Love, the structure was well set out, with each character highlighted at the start of chapters. I liked the links to the real life characters with their online persona the author builds the characters well throughout the book, especially Sandy who grows in front of your eyes, Sandy utilises the gaming aspect to help her in real life situations. I am not a gamer or indeed understand the LitRPG but that mattered little as I enjoyed the book for what it was, a good solid read.
As my title suggests, this book certainly has an interesting structure, which made for an engaging read. I will be sure to read more by Kate Messick - thumbs up
