Scandalous The Life and Times of Madame Restell : New York's Most Notorious Abortionist Hardcover by Allan Keller (Author) 1981 First Edition Hardcover with Dust Jacket (Sealed in Brodart)
I love social histories so I was really disappointed by this one. I suspect it of being a gussied-up dissertation to begin with, and when you've read as much academic writing as I have the very idea makes you come over all tired and achey. But then it's also chock-full of value judgments ("Madame Restell was obviously amoral.") that seem to have been based on the author's feelings about Madame Restell rather than on any critical thinking about Restell's historical moment. It definitely made me want to know a lot more about Madame Restell, her associates, her clients and her time, but not at the knee of Allan Keller.
