About the author

David Stephenson

David Stephenson is the author of the twelve volume epic fantasy Journey of Selvorne.

As a child, he was an avid reader of the old faerie tales, compendiums by Grimm, and Ruth Manning–Sanders, and later inspired by new fantasy works by C.S Lewis and Tolkien. Born to write, at age nine he started his first novel, on a manual typewriter – incomplete, and lost, but the determination remained with many short stories over the years. At age fifteen, a single dream became the vision that inspired an epic work of fantasy – by age sixteen he realised the depth of that work would take complete devotion.

More than a few years.
More than a few decades.
And so he began a journey of over thirty five years.

Travelling across Europe, investigating inspirational places of the past. Studying history, from ancient to modern, with a focus on the medieval. Learning the skills of those times, researching the past. Covering the entire journey of man, all aspects of human behaviour, conflict and joy.

Thirty five years to learn the facts, and know the truth, experiencing life in all its glorious delight, and horror, and sorrow. All the while writing – to realise that original vision of epic fantasy.

Journey of Selvorne: Enemy Unknown is his first released book of the completed twelve volume series. Made publicly available in 2020, to ease the loneliness of lock–downs, and on the 1st of April as a nod to the great joke of life.

When not writing novels, David can be found woodworking with hand tools, or being astonished by his wife and two children, who continuously show that no matter how much of life a person might understand, there is much more as yet unknown.

I really enjoyed this book and felt mesmerised by the writing style of the author. The book’s premise rests on who killed the main character’s father, set in a mediaeval type land with guards, administrators and the occasional magical creature. We follow the hero as he must hide his identity and discover his enemies.
I particularly liked the integrity of the hero and the author. A tale without needless violence, swearing or cringeworthy sexual encounters. We follow Selvorne as he realises the enormity of the death he has witnessed and what it means for lordship of his town and another nearby.
The main character is enchanting to read about- well-developed, a bit of a goose with charm and a sense of humour.
As the first of a series, looking forward to the next instalment.
