We were an hour from Las Vegas when the plane began to shake.
Something is rotten in the little town of Dillard, NV. And Mike Romeo is right in the middle of it.
After the plane he's on has to land in the desert, Romeo tries to check on the woman who was sitting next to him. But the hospital gives him a strange runaround. A local tough tries to lean on him. Then he runs afoul of the sheriff.
That's when things turn ugly.
Which is the wrong way to turn things on Mike Romeo. Because when he's pushed, he takes a stand. And that means some very bad people are going to have to take a fall.

Mike Romeo is one of the great characters in modern detective/mystery fiction and James Scott Bell is a wonderful writer--action, adventure, humor, philosophy--the Romeo books have it all. Since I have finished all of them (this one was just published last week) that have been written so far, I will move on to one of Bell's other series for now.
I always know that if James Scott Bell wrote it, it will be worth reading. Let all the other Mike Romeo books, Romeo’s stand is fast-paced, witty, and very entertaining. Highly recommended.
In Romeo's Stand, Mike is flying on investigator business when his plane makes an emergency landing near Dillard, NV, about an hour from Las Vegas. The woman sitting next to Mike is shaken up, but when he tries to check on her, he gets the run-around. The more he questions, the more walls he runs into. And Mike is a fan of finding the truth regardless of the cost.
While this novel is entertaining, there is nothing new here. Mike's character sees no growth. No one he talks to gets his quotes or references. Not everyone is as stupid as the folks Mike runs into. It would be nice to see a few characters, other than Ira, be able to converse with Mike. Five books in and that schtick is getting a little old.
Overall, this is a decent book that could have been better. While technically clean, there is a lot of innuendo, double entendre, and suggested profanity. The violence is expected for this genre.
It's an alright tale. The downside is there is a lot of skip over material. Romeo's thoughts and philosophy. Great for his character, but if a person has read the previous books they are familiar with that. The skip over really has nothing to do with the plot.
I'm a big fan of this book series. The main character, Mike Romeo, is no ordinary private investigator. He's an intellectual whose mind is always pondering the deep things of philosophy and life, and yet he's got the body of an ex-cage fighter. And then there's his penchant for helping those in need, whether they ask for it or not.
The setting for this novel is a small town in Nevada not far from Las Vegas, and the author nails the vibe. The side characters are half the fun, as we meet a hermit and his chicken, and a guy in the local bar whose name says it all: "Moochie". Not to mention Fuzzy, the tarantula that gets a little up close and personal with Mike when he's stranded in the desert (shiver!).
When Mike's plane goes down and Karen, the woman he was sitting next to, disappears from the group of survivors, you just know that Mike can't just walk away. Karen seemed like she was worried about something, and Mike's investigator senses are tingling with her sudden disappearance. Wouldn't you know that the quiet little town has something to hide... I really don't want to give too much away (the plot twists are only a surprise if you don't know they're coming!), so I'm going to stop right there.
With all the fun quips and hijinks I've come to expect of a Mike Romeo tale, "Romeo's Stand" is a satisfying mystery that kept me guessing and above all kept me entertained the whole way through.
James Scott Bell has written another fast paced, nail-nibbling suspense/thriller. Mike Romeo is back & in top form. An emergency landing of his Vegas-bound plane pitches him into opposition with a group of killers known as Eurasians. He stirs their ire by asking to check on the lady who sat next to him on the plane. Soon Sheriff Cullen & Deputy Sam are after him in their bumbling, incompetent way. The chase becomes a convoluted mess littered with bodies. It is a stand alone book, but as always it helps to read the whole series. This book is recommended for anyone who like an action packed , clean book.
I give this one four stars because it's an enjoyable read, and a clever take on the tried-and-true Western plot: lone gunslinger rides into town--or in this case, falls in via an airplane crash--and instantly clashes with the corrupt and evil Sheriff and his minions. While we've all seen this story before, and Bell contrives a series of "convenient" plot points that strain credulity, it's all in fun, and Mike Romeo is such a likable protagonist that it's easy enough to suspend disbelief and go along for the ride. A tasty weekend read, more flavorful than nutritious.
Started reading at 12:30 and finished at 7:30. Thanks, Mr. Bell, for another intensive performance in the theater of my mind. I ate lunch reading it, so there was no break. I just finished. I needed to clear my mind after an intensive week, and following Romeo for an afternoon can do that for me. If anyone reading this has not read a Romeo novel and can enjoy fast-paced violence with a large dose of humorous dialogue, tortured philosophizing, and painful internal monologue, you will find a treat in this series.
A philosophic former cage-fighter attracts trouble like sharp cheddar attracts mice. A strange but addicting mixture of suspense, humor, endearing characters, violence, and a strong good versus evil undercurrent featuring a continuing stream of classic as well as contemporary philosophers' views on the human condition get the reader quickly invested in this series. It's hard to put the book down.
I love the Romeo character & bought this one as soon as it was available to pre-order. As usual, Mike's stubbornness gets him involved in something that turns out to be very much bigger than foreseen. I love the thought & philosophy scattered through out. Plenty of action and snarky dialog. Well edited. Good stuff.
This was another GREAT novel from Bell. I have read 26 or more of his books and can not wait to get the next one. I have many favorite authors but James Scott Bell is number one (1) on this list. His writing style is awesome and it is nice to read books that are free of foul language and sex. I highly recommend all his works.
This is James Scott Bell’s best novel yet. This is a bold claim, but I do believe it will stand the test of time right up until his next release. My only complaint is it went by so fast. I may have to start over with Romeo’s Rules and read the whole series again. I suggest you do the same.
Because I don't write spoilers, I don't get into plots. All the Romeo novels by James Scott Bell are highly unique, very well-written, and worth reading. I can't wait for the next one, but I guess I'll have to. My reviews of Romeo's novels 2 through 5 will be this one, no changes. All the Romeo novels get five stars.
I hoped for another story to surface in this series and grabbed it when Mr. Bell released it. Another fine mess Romeo found himself in. You must read the story to understand the meaning. I enjoyed the quips and quotes almost as much as the story. Thanks again for sharing your talent with us, Mr. Bell.
The book was a total disappointment. The plot is not only weak and disjointed, it borders on the ridiculous. Key parts of the plot were left hanging or not answered. The characters are hackneyed, stereotype, caricatures. The only redeeming feature of the book is the educated quotes and references sprinkled throughout.
I liked it. Have really enjoyed the entire series. It’s a good change of pace to have a thinking hero. This book has lots of action. Good characters. A good story line. While it is a standalone story, it kind of leaves the door open for a sequel to go after the bad guys who are only mentioned in the book. Just a thought. Recommended.
James Scott Bell has written a great series with these Mike Romeo books. The character is smart, interesting, funny sometimes and always a bad ass unless he’s taking care of the innocents he encounters. Always a fun read. I highly recommend this book and the series!
Mike Romeo... Wherefore Art Thou? In Vegas, baby! It's a great story featuring a great protagonist - Mike Romeo. Witty, clever, and punchy dialog makes the story enjoyable and the pacing is spot-on!. Every book in the series has been a delight to read! Mr. Bell can really write - highly recommended!
No matter what they throw, shoot or Sapp at Mike, he comes up swinging for justice, albeit it's someone's justice. This is action packed, and quite a thrill ride. I'm almost believing the TV action series, Reacher, was based on Mike Romeo! Enjoy the read, and the ride.
I think what captures me about these books is the way that James Scott Bell fuels classic action and drama with thought-provoking philosophy and the wisdom of the ages. I don't get easily bored by Mike, Ira, and the other well developed but quirky characters.
The Romeo series is fun. I enjoy the philosophic references. I wish the philosophy he discusses played more of a role in the plot, rather than being more or less just a part of Romeo's quirky character. That said, at least one part of the philosophy he mentions does play a small role here. There were a few plot holes and unresolved points, but overall a fun read.
I love Mr. Bell's novels. Of the many I've read, this is my favorite. Intricate story, hilarious dialogue and even philosophical teaching. I always count on James Scott Bell for good clean entertainment and he never fails.
Book 5 finished and I do hope JSB is writing more Mike Romeo adventures, I fully intend to follow him on said adventures. He's a great protagonist and those 5 books absolutely flew by. I'd totally recommend you read the series if you enjoy a good thriller.
I started this series in the middle. I missed the 1st and 2nd one. This one is my favorite and hated for it to end. Such clever writing and a compelling read!
This was better than the first one I read. Bell's characters are a whot. So funny. Recommend for everyone that likes suspense, laughter, compassion and life all together.
Another great installment in the Mike Romeo thriller series
More of Mikes past is revealed as he navigates a corrupt desert town and fights to overcome the corruption there with great characters to assist along the way.
I enjoy James Scott Bell's Romeo books! Mike Romeo is a man I would want to have my back! Hopefully there are more in the series. You do not have to read them in order, each stands on its own.
