My name is Mary, Katherine, and Grace. You can use any one of those, I am all three. We know we are multiple, most are not aware. Of course, we don’t all speak at the same time, at least not out loud. From the outside I’m sure I look like a normal girl. Except you won’t see me. My Uncle keeps me locked in a barn convinced I am possessed. I mean seriously, if I was possessed, wouldn’t I be able to break free from the locks he keeps me shackled in? Mary teaches us the Scriptures, Katherine guides our body through salvation, and Grace? Well, Grace will show you the true meaning of damnation and will punish you from your sins. When danger arrives, it takes all three of us to survive this torture because Hell hath no wrath like a multiple scorned. Wanna come play with us?

REVIEW OF STORY: Alters Mary, Katherine and Grace work in harmony in order to survive a life of constant abuse. Chained by their ankle inside a decrepit barn, they are forced to suffer the elements unless/until they’ll agree to be the wife of their abusive Uncle Wilk. What these alters endure is dark, depraved and to a dark lover like me, very entertaining! And things only get better (more twisted and disturbing) once they leave the barn ...
I loved that this story was told from multiple perspectives, not just from the main character’s point of view. When our main character(s) meet new people, we also get to hear their perspective which was awesome! And it was obvious that Emery Leeann did a ton of research on D.I.D.. The only thing that I felt was unrealistic about this story was how much access some of the patients had (for example, access to the kitchen???).
Despite being such a short book, the first 98% felt fleshed out and detailed. However, the end was extremely sudden and anti-climactic. I wish there could’ve been a bit more rather than such a rapid, sudden ending.
REVIEW OF EDITING/PROOFREADING: The first half of this book was very well edited and proofread, but at about the halfway point, that changed dramatically. There were typos like always using INTO even when it should have been IN TO, THAT for WHO, MIGHT always used even when it should have been MAY, CLOSE instead of CLOSED, OK for OKAY and SNACKERED when it should have been KNACKERED. There were sentences containing the wrong word, extra word(s), missing words, etc. (for example, “As long as it wasn’t dog food, we didn’t care where we ate with.”). Several words were capitalized that shouldn’t have been (for example, “From A gutless wretch like you”), and punctuation and capitalization were done incorrectly in some of the dialogue (for example,”Hello.” She squeaked. should have been, ”Hello,” she squeaked and, “I’m Mary.” She smiled.” should have been, ”I’m Mary,” she smiled.”
The majority of the punctuation errors had to do with commas, for example, not surrounding the word THOUGH with commas in the middle of a sentence when it should have been and not using commas properly with coordinating conjunctions (including the FANBOYS rule which was only used occasionally). She also did not follow rules for commas when using the word OH (for example, “Oh my fu Instead of telling this story in the past or present tense, sentences fluctuated back-and-forth between the two. In addition, there was a discrepancy about how the main character was kept in the barn. In the beginning and end, we are told that she’s attached by one ankle, yet in the middle of the story, we’re told they, “cut the last iron from her FEET”.
Emery LeeAnn is one of my favorite authors ❤ She always delivers with every story she writes and this book was no exception This was a twisted little tale that will hold you captivated and saying WTF 😂 I Loved IT ❤❤❤
I will start my review with a quote, “DID is primarily a coping mechanism in response to overwhelming stress or trauma.” And with what our main character endures, it's understandable. This short story is definitely an eye opener into condition dissociative identity disorder. As she battles to find a balance between her personalities and coping with her imprisonment at the hands of her uncle. The darkest part of the story is definitely the fact that the Uncle twists aspects of the Bible to suit his warped needs. It's also looking at how religion and mental health can sometimes cause wires to be crossed. Raising the questions about possession and looking at the aspects of DID that could happen due to a misdiagnosis or lack of understanding. I found it fascinating to see how the three personalities co-existed. Seeing the way Grace and Catherine did what they could to alleviate the stress and upset Mary went through. Knowing that when one persona was in turmoil it affected the overall body, as Mary came to the surface. The reader saw the innocence of the character, trying to hold onto her purity. The way each chapter focuses on all three characters, the personalities and internal monologue was very well done. The way each personality takes the time to surface depending on the situation they face. Obviously it gets very bad very quickly, which honestly I would have loved more. The body language changes, the change in voice and way each persona holds themselves when they take control. Truly shows a level of understanding, which I would have loved to see more of especially with additional characters. Especially with regards to other mental health conditions, so please bring out a continuous Emery, I'm dying to see how the rest of the story unfolds.
Ive always have this special place in my readers heart for main characters who have D.I.D! Our FMC has been through hell on earth and for that she split..when one rescue lands her in the looney bin..you'd think they'd be safe..well read this and your heart just might break...
I have to say, wow. This book is great. A great glimpse into the world of being insane and the hospital life of the patients and doctors who take care of them. Of course though, she has to leave you hanging. Lol
This book was interesting to say the least! I mean the multiple part I got, and understood although I felt needed more details. But the ending was strange and a surprise. I'm guessing this wasn't the first time this happened? Overall ok story
A gripping short story about a girl with dissociative identity disorder. It’s beautifully written, deeply compelling, and delivers an unforgettable twist at the end
Another wicked, twisted and gory story by Emery !! I love her books; you never know what journey she will take you on. I loved how it was connected to the Brunswick Asylum. I enjoyed reading the three characters journey in one body, and their battle against their pervert, religious uncle. I love it she is so creative, if you haven't read it yet you should.
