Librarian's Note: This is an alternate cover edition of ASIN B0892LSXWR

Everyone lives a lie.

It replays in my head, the moment of my greatest shame. I'll never escape it. With an exhale, I let go of everything. I fall endlessly, waiting for the sudden stop. Hell would be a welcome respite.

A hollow husk of the woman she used to be, Hannah hides from her pain with any alcohol she can find. She’s bleeding out from wounds no one sees. No one but Merdon, a dark fey with a violent history of his own, who’s determined to keep her from the one thing she wants most. Death.

She doesn’t understand why he cares about her or her addiction. It’s not like he’s nice to her. Yet, he’s relentless in his determination to show her there’s something to live for. If she can find a way through the pain she might just see what Merdon already knows: Second chances are rare.

No! It can't be over! There's no way I have to wait another year to get the next book! I'm not entirely sure I'll survive that long!!!

Omg... okay, Hannah you guys. I hate her. I hated her from the moment she was introduced books ago, but I trusted MJ to bring me around. As I was reading though, I was like "seriously, are we supposed to feel sorry for her at this point?!" But then something magical happened - I did, I did start feeling sorry for her. And Oh man I loved how Merdon dealt with her. Hannah's character development was so real, raw and believable. I shouldn't be impressed because I know this author is amazing. But I'm still floored by what she managed to portray in this book.

Merdon is really such a deep, intricate character. He was proof positive that the Fae aren't just cookie cutter versions of Drav. That they have their own thoughts, preferences and ways of dealing with people and situations. He was his own brand ofnperfect and that also, is impressive.

After eight books in the series I'm not even a little less starving for more.

Another slow/low burn

Like the prior installment, Demon Disgrace features a heroine with a lot of real world issues. PTSD and alcoholism aren't pretty but at least they are well written here. What ultimately falls flat is an almost total lack of development for Merdon (MC). He is one dimensional in some places and a non entity in others. The relationship development makes no sense and the end is just anticlimactic. I mean, the epilogue takes place hours after the final chapter. That's not an epilogue, it's a new chapter.
Just generally disappointing.

I cried, a lot.

Never has one of your stories hitten home so hard for me.
Over the years I've struggled with PTSD, clinical depression, and some pervasive anxiety. Twice I've been suicidal. I've read triggering books, I've read bad 'edgy' books...but this book. Melissa you touched so many points that I've seen. My family on both sides has serious addiction issues. So I've never let drugs or alcohol tempt me in that way. But addiction and escapism come in many forms.
I'm not in that same situation in longer. But rarely does an author bring me back like that.
Thank you. It's hard to empathize with your past self sometimes. For me it's easier to reprimand and be overly critical. Crying out some of the past pain through Hannah? Really, it felt so relieving. And the moment with the cat?!?!
Blubbering.... I haven't cried over fiction like that since I read how dobby died.
Yet they were sweet happy tears with only a trace of bittersweet...
Thank you for this. I was apprehensive about this book. But it's hands down my favorite thing I've read that you've written. <3

This book gave me all the feels! I have been waiting for Hannah’s story. She seemed so broken and destroyed and I wanted to see how Merdon was going to fix her.

I have never dealt with depression so severe or alcoholism, but the author is so good at writing Hannah’s trauma, that I fell like I’m going through it. I can understand her her and pain and understand why she wanted to end it. I cried so much throughout this book.

Even knowing that Merdon and Hannah’s friends were trying to help her, I felt betrayed along with Hannah at their tactics. I was hoping she would make them feel sorry even though she was the one that needed to be sorry! But I forgave them along with Hannah.

So far, all the men have been known to listen whenever their women asked them to do something, but Merdon was nothing like his brethren! It really keeps you guessing! I loved that he was different and just what Hannah needed.

The only thing I would change is more of them! I know there is more to the story but I wanted to see a like more sweetness from Merdon once he helped her. It wrapped up too quickly. I hope to get a peak of them in the next books!

Straight off the bat, and as MJ Haag has said, this book is much darker and more serious than the others in the series. And I loved it! I think it showed diversity of characters and delved into the fact that not everyone copes the same way with trauma. It would be boring if all the characters in the books were the same, and I commend MJ Haag for her ability to write characters with such distinctive personalities. I also think she handled the issues of addiction, PTSD and alcoholism with aplomb.

But just because the book focused on some real issues that were more serious, didn’t mean the book didn’t have the same great writing style and the hot chemistry I’ve come to associate with this series. I didn’t always agree with Merdons actions and I didn’t always like how Hannah reacted or did things. But I feel like they were perfect for each other and the sexy time scenes were hot hot hot.
I’m also loving the overall story arc progression and am seriously hoping we get another three books at least for this series!! (Tor!! Emily! Molev!!!).
Highly recommend the whole series!

Well written just like all the other books, but I don't approve of the content. I was very much disappointed because I loved all the other books in this series and was very excited to read this new book.

Very light spoilers ahead

While the in book methods of dealing with depression did work, I could not approve of them at all. I also am not liking the trend of the fey's behavior. Hopefully, Haag's building up to something, if not I'd like to see a new book that's more in the tone of Cassie's or Angel's.

Very slow and unfortunately I personally found it boring. While I loved that the author wrote a book centered around a survivor struggling with PTSD, survivor's guilt, alcoholism, and suicidal behavior, nothing else was happening through this very long book. I don't know how many times I read about her waking up from screams, about how she doesn't want to eat, about how she wants to drown herself in alcohol to forget, over and over again. In short, it was repetitive.

So we're here at book 8. This is Hannah's story. She's an addict, she lies and manipulates those closest to her to get her way. She's suffering from PTSD and pretty much behaves in a way which mirrors any other addict suffering from PTSD.. Sigh..

Book 7 left me wanting to quit the series. Against my better judgment I pushed forward and picked up this one with hope anew, knowing that book 8 would highlight a different couple. Overall, it was disappointing (for me) and here's why:

1. The book dragged from about the 60% to 80% mark. Not much happened except Hannah's turning point, which was pretty anti-climactic. Yes that's definitely a critical point in this series for the female characters but the execution was a bit off.

2. Merdon, after going through all that he went through, I feel like he deserved someone nicer. I understand that he was the best choice for Hannah seeing as how her addiction was killing her and he was the only person/Fey strong enough (mentally) to help her. BUT, I really wanted him to find a more loving partner. Hannah really was immature, given that everyone has gone through some form of trauma since the hellhounds arrived, it doesn't give one person the right to be so unpleasant and inconsiderate. He deserved better, thats just my preference for this particular Fey.

3. Brenna. Damn annoyingly, immature, self-righteous Brenna had too many scenes in this book. She's still annoying and immature in book 8, devoid of logic and common sense. She can shoot an arrow so brownie points to her for that.

4. I hate how the humans treat the Fey and I especially hate how, by book 8, humans still aren't giving them a chance. I also truly dislike how desperate the Fey are for a little attention that they would do anything for the humans. By now I thought that would have changed.

5. Too many background characters, I don't want to hear about Brenna, Angel, Eden (immature as well) or even Mya (I didn't like her personality in the first 3 books).

6. Book 8 mainly focused on Hannah's recovery which didn't do much to push the plot forward, until the very last few pages. Still, not enough happened plot-wise. I see that some stuff is going on with the infected, I would have liked a bit more before the book ended but I guess we'll see in 8.5 and 8.6.

7. I'm tired of reading the word "sweet spot", "thick rod between his legs" etc. By now everyone knows or should know that the Fey are well-endowed. Maybe I'm being negative and maybe I'm a little tired from reading 8 books in about 10 days. (I'll take a break from the series to read something else then come back with a new attitude).

8. Book 8, although it seemed a bit more serious, it wasn't serious enough given the gravity of the situation at hand. The world has gone to shit and the women at Tolerance are just shacking up, having sex and laughing. Laughing is good, sure, but I wish it had more of a survival theme to it like one of the previous books.

9. I would love to read about more mature characters. I'm tired of the 18 year olds getting it on with the Fey. A more mature female character who knows what she wants, is head-strong but kind and nurturing would be a good respite.

That's about it. 2 stars. Hopefully the last few books are better.

4 stars — This one was hard to read. It felt realistic though. It’s just that Hannah was *really* hard to like in this one. But it really showed how alcoholism can alter who a person is, so much so that even they don’t recognize themselves. I really appreciated that Hannah didn’t just turn around immediately. It was actually a really long process, and in the throes of her addiction and withdrawal, she was still not a great person. She was blinded to how her actions had affected others, and refused to take responsibility for that part of her life. In the meantime she was drowning in guilt for another decision that she made. I appreciated that it wasn’t downplayed, that the trauma from that event, and her alcoholism, were both presented as problems that won’t ever completely go away. It was real.

I think the gradual development really had me believing in her changes, and gave me time to forgive her for the awful things, and appreciate it even more when she started coming back to herself and finding her happiness again.

The relationships with the fey are always kind of on the edge of appropriate…but I think it lets an author play on the boundaries of our fantasies, because it’s not real life, and it’s not human men. They still amuse me. They’re still adorable. Merdon was harder than others, because he took the idea of “tough love” to a whole new level. And yet, in the world they lived in, it was exactly what Hannah needed. And I’m not sure it would have worked as well if she’d understood his motivations behind it all, and that it was coming from a place of love.

The one thing I wish is that we’d gotten a bit of a recap of Merdon’s past, because it has been awhile since I read the previous books, and while I remember broad strokes, I wanted that deeper dive. Ah well, something for if I ever reread this series from the beginning again.

All in all there was a lot of uncomfortable emotional moments in this one, but also a lot of laughs and fun that I’ve come to enjoy and expect. I loved that we didn’t just get that from the fey, but also from the other humans. Mary is a bit over the top for me, though she does still startle laughs out of me. In particular, I LOVED the girl “fight club” that was formed, what they were learning, and the connections they were developing. I’m kind of sad that it doesn’t look like we’ll get Emily’s story before the end. After this book especially I really want it. Even if it’s just a novella.

So yeah. Definitely a solid book in the series, even if it didn’t blow me away. Probably gonna have to go out and get the next book right away now.

This is going to be a rant fest, but here goes!

This book started off great because it showed a deeply hurting woman struggling to escape her pain in self-destructive ways. It was relatable in some way because it spoke to a desperate and hopeless side in human existence that most people can relate to. Maybe I've been spoilt by the stories of the other fey in Demon Dawn, Demon Escape, Demon Deception and of course, the Mya and Drav books (those are the ones by Haag I've read so far), but Merdon was a total asshole! And spare me the BS narrative that he was trying to distract her from her pain...by causing her MORE PAIN?? Come on, there are healthier ways of getting someone to overcome depression than making said person feel like crap, over and over again!

Don't get me started on Hannah's sudden fully developed attraction to Merdon. If that isn't some major Stockholm crap, I don't know what it is. I can understand that most of the heroines in the fey stories tend to immediately do a 360 degree turn in their feelings/emotions towards the fey. At least, they have a valid reason because the fey in those cases are patient, gentle and kind. This story makes me question whether the theory of attracting more flies with honey than vinegar is indeed true. How can someone be cruel and unkind to you and this attitude makes you fall in love?? It makes no sense on ANY LEVEL. And to think that Hannah finally got to rationalise and defend such poor treatment of her person because she had been blinded by lust, was disgusting to see.
I could barely stomach the random acts of affection being shown by Merdon because it was too little too late and left a poor taste in my mouth.

This statement by Merdon to Hannah, when she tried to clarify that her affection towards the former was different from how she treated the other fey, is completely aggravating to say the least;
"You can't offer what's already mine...I'll have what I want when I'm ready."

I nearly choked in anger at the utter cocky audacity!

Frankly, this particular book was a hard miss for me because I couldn't even finish it after reading over 300 pages...yes, I was that upset.

To think that I read this book almost up to the end, staying up the most part of the night, in the vain hope that Merdon would do something to redeem himself, is very disappointing.

I give this book a weak 2 stars for the mere reason that it gave me hope of a great read with how it began, but sadly didn't live up to my expectations.

📙 Demon Disgrace

📚 Série The Ressurection Chronicles - Vol. 08

✍🏻 @author.melissahaag

📆 03/11/2020

📝 Shattered Glass Publishing - Kindle Edition

🌟 3,5/5

💌 Resenha:

I feel like it took me forever to read this story but it's ok because I decided that I love it. It was entertaining and enjoyable when I wasn't frustrated and wanting to smack people. The characters were interesting and relatable - sometimes a little too relatable, but I kind of felt like that was a good thing. Communication is key to so many things especially when it helps to understand where someone else is coming from and what motivates their actions. There are a lot of feels in this story and not all of them are pleasant. There are significant issues that are tackled in this story but they fit within the overall story and the world they are happening in. I was surprised by Merdon's behavior, as well as that of many of the inhabitants of Tolerance. At times I was furious with them, and other times I understood where they were coming from. Hannah had a ton going on in her head, none of it was good which led to decisions that others in town couldn't or wouldn't support. I probably identified with Hannah a little too much because I was right there with her when she was yelling at people to leave her alone and to stop interfering in her life. I loved the archery lessons with the targets that made the fey nervous. The hand to hand training was great as well. Hannah's realization that Merdon was trying to save her because he cared for her was a long time coming, but very understandable given the circumstances. How the story ended was great. I always wish that there was an epilogue further out, but that's because I'm greedy. I recommend reading this book.

Be aware that there are serious issues addressed in this book that include Alcoholism, PTSD, Depression, Suicidal thoughts, or ideology. Please plan accordingly if those are triggering issues for you as they were for me.

Demon Disgrace
Review

PTSD goes by many names, but no matter what you call it, it eats at the mind and heart of those affected by it. Many sufferers of PTSD turn to alcohol as a way to self-medicate in order to find some relief. Alcoholism is a disease, an illness of the body that eats away the soul. The two issues, together, feed each other, with disastrous effects. These issues are difficult to suffer and it's hard for others to imagine what the victims are going through, but M. J. Haag has done a great job of showing us exactly what it's like to have to deal with the trauma of PTSD and the aftermath and struggle to recover.
Hannah suffers from severe PTSD and survivor's guilt and, like many others before her, turns to alcohol to escape the pain and the constant memory of her past. An intervention is needed to keep Hannah from drinking herself to death or killing herself in another way. In Tolerance, a town arising from the ashes of an apocalyptic world, the survivors have to be able to depend on each other if they want to keep living. And that means coming together to save Hannah…in spite of herself.
Ms. Haag has given us another great story, written with amazing skill, tact and insight into the mind and heart of someone dealing with very horrific problems and their struggle to survive and overcome them.

Better and better

I fell in love with the series a few years ago, but was kinda dreading this one when I realized Hannah was going to be paired with Merdon cause she seriously had some issues that I just didn't want to deal with (cause lets be honest... in a good series you go through their issues with them). Even though I had preordered the book, I was delaying starting it but ran out of excuses and started it this morning. I took a few hours away from reading to make a birthday cake and dinner but otherwise I couldn't put it down! I love that Hannah actually dealt with her issues. I love that it wasn't glossed over or prettied up. I love that Merdon wasn't all rose tinted glasses and soft words. He treated her like she was strong and capable and she fought to become so. Best of all she learned to forgive herself and others. She learned to consider others and not just herself. Well done M.J.!!!

Hannah and Merdon share so many similarities in their pasts, and Hannah would rather bury hers in alcohol. Merdon sees the dangerous road she's on and takes it upon himself to help her through the pain in unorthodox ways. The more she fights him, the harder he works to help her. While she does whatever she can to get through the nightmares and wishes for death, Merdon pushes her to her limit and attempts to show her a world where she might find some happiness if she survives.

I fall for each of these fae as the author writes them, and Merdon is no different. This story is completely different than any of the others in that we get insight into a woman who has been through such a horrifying time and falls into addiction. What Hannah went through broke my heart, and the fight Merdon goes through to keep her alive made me love the fae even more. I can't wait to see which one she writes about next.

still good but…

This one was a bit harder for me to like. Warning spoiler.

I agreed with a lot in this book but disagreed with a lot too. Merdon was a good character and so was Hannah but she ‘got over’ the depression really quickly and it felt a bit of a let down to not hit the bottom and have her realize it herself. Hannah skimmed over Al the betrayals of everyone and no one thought anything being done to her was wrong. Merdon, who I admire, and his actions were really pushing over the line to cruel. As someone who’s had depression the fact that Hannah went from nothing is worth it to being angry and frustrated wasn’t as realistic as it would seem. If she’d been that depressed she wouldn’t have just suddenly jumped from why bother to anger. It seemed as though there was an important gap from depression to anger.

I still enjoyed the book but it was a bit of a let down with a topic so important and real.

Inner demons 💔

You never know how heavy or lighthearted the story you will get with this series. Each story is unique and different because the characters are different. Different backgrounds, different upbringing and different life changing events that brought them here. This one was on the heavy side. I knew coming into it, that it was gonna be a hard one but still never imagine what hanna actually went tu for her to be this deep into her depression and mean demeanor. Guilt can do that to you. This story hit too close to comfort to be honest and i started cringing at the beginning. I thought i wouldn’t be able to finish but the more a read the more i understood. It really nailed it. And even in the dark times.. theres always a little light and humor that i love. Melissa always finds a way to make me smile even when i cry. Cant wait for the next one!

fantastic loved it!

This story was epic and the characters are so interesting I read this in one sitting! Hannah had too fight and run from the infected but had too make a decision that has damaged her life. She turns towards alcohol and will lie and use anyone even the Fae who protect them all too get booze She's mean and getting more dependent on it too numb her memories. Emily her roommate and friend is so worried about her but Hannah is mean and unapologetic about her actions. She's on the verge of ending it all and gets drunk and steps off the roof hoping it's high enough. She's expecting too end it but "ooff" she into someone's arms! The quiet Fae Meroden has been watching her for a while now and catches her but she's in for a rough time with the strong willpower of him!

This series just keeps getting better and better! I have loved this series from book one, but the new characters being explored are only making it better. I really like how the author is now taking this zombie filled world and starting to put it back together. What would civilization look like after zombies hit? Would real world problems change or would they still be the same?

What I think I loved most about this book is that the author took a character and gave her pre-apocalypse problems and showed how she is handling it in the new world. It was done in a tasteful way that really hit home as to how people are dealing. Not everyone is adjusting as well as others.

I hope the author continues this series.

Much darker at first, but tough it out

The beginning of this book has much darker personal issues for the heroine than most of the books in this series. I had trouble getting into it at first because I think I could relate a little too much to the heroine’s depression, and I didn’t like the way the other characters treated her. But I’ve loved every other book in this series, so I didn’t give up and read it through to the end. And I’m glad I did. The interpersonal issues get resolved wonderfully and the heroine definitely gets her Happily Ever After (For Now). Can’t wait for the next book!!

Sooo doggone good!

This book was soo good and complex. I absolutely love M. J. Haag's Resurrection Chronicles series. This post apocalyptic world is well thought out, dark, intense, and delicious! In the stuggle for survival, Hannah is dealing or not dealing with the stressors that cause her to be an alcoholic, and Merdon who doesnt act like normal fae. Ohhh. This pairing is sooo good. Lots of real issues are touched on this book and it was great how the author handled them. I loved how this book wasnt an insat love situation, but hidden love and almost an enimies to lovers.

Many of the main characters in the “Resurrection Chronicles” by M.J. Haag have suffered and dealt with much trauma because of the earthquakes that lead to apocalyptic world. Out of all these stories, this one has the rawest emotions of the main character. It feels so real and you experience the heartache, guilt, shame, etc. that Hannah is going through. Merdon, the fey, who decides to help her, keeps surprising me with the lengths he will go for her. M.J. Haag does an incredible job at writing Hannah’s struggles as she tries to move on from her past and embraces the now and future. I recommend this great read.

Heavy

This story touched on a heavy subject. Any kind of addiction is truly a monster to fight and over come, this coming from someone who has battled addiction. I was shocked in the middle of the heaviness with laughter and that one of the books Hannah was reading was from the Demon series. Great touch that. I loves this series , every character and every book. I'm checking all the time to see if a new book has been written. I could seriously read 20 or more books in this series and not have enough. So many characters and sooo many stories to tell! Fantastic job Melissa!

Deep & Beautiful

While this novel doesn’t compare to the other ones in the series, there was so much honesty and depth to it that I enjoyed and respected. There’s a particular quote that sums it up really well: “We all had issues. Even the fictional versions of ourselves.” I can relate to that quote in so many different ways, which is why I enjoyed this book and read it in two days. I have reread the rest of the series at least three times and have enjoyed them each time anew.

What amazing story
Very well written, the PTSD is believable and in Hannah is so clear the before and after, she is not an alcoholic, she drinks to forget and to be able to sleep in the same way long time ago people would drink before having their tooth pulled, she is not an alcoholic, because that is a structural disease and she has no signs of that. And that is why Merdon's approach works so well, she needed to reframe it, feel stronger, and own the historical moment she was living. Very well done.
This series just keeps getting better and better

I didn't know what to think at first with this latest addition to The Resurrection Chronicles. It was pretty dark and there wasn't any of the funny banter between characters or hilarious missteps made by the fey. You have to stick it out. It gets better, I promise! I can see how someone wanting to drown their pain away is a real thing. There is a reason alcohol sales are through the roof right now due to Covid! Love, love, love this series. Will be forever grateful I stumbled upon it. One of my favorite series of all time!

This book was tough to read, especially the beginning. It deals with alcoholism and PTSD. It's one of the best narrations of alcoholism I've seen, but it doesn't pull any punches, and that made it a darker read. I loved the slow burn and different characterization of the dark elves in this take; seeing Hannah through different eyes was also a treat. I hadn't expected to get into her story so much, given that I'd hated her in previous books, but Haag does a great job of showing a flawed individual struggling to come to terms with the apocalypse.

I couldn’t stand Hannah, and that remained true for the first third of this book. But Haag is so skilled a writer as to convert you into an advocate. Hannah’s story was incredibly heartbreaking, and her struggles were real. Everyone in this world has a sad story. However, what astounded me…was the heart shattering glimpse into Emily’s backstory, and what role Hannah played in it. By the end of the book I was happy for Hannah. I hope that Tor winds up with Emily. And what about Garrett, oh…and Ryan…don’t they deserve mates???

I read this too fast and now I’m sad it’s over. I loved it and hated it which is a first for this series. Hannah’s issues are very real and compelling. I didn’t love Merdon though or the way they interacted. I needed more of them together. I didn’t get it but I’m not taking a star off for that because the story still kept me glued to the book so much that I lost sleep. I do wish I could get a new story in this series every month.

An exceptional book that both broke my heart and filled it with joy at the same. Emotions are raw in this book and its quite heavy. But in true MJ Haag style she takes you on a journey that has you smiling and leaves you with warmth in your heart.

This is an apocoliptic type of world, zombies and hellhounds rule the earth but with Hero’s like the Fey, there’s hope. And hope is what rules this storyline.
I always thought Drav was my all time favorite but I think Merdin just stole his spot.
