Love. This two-faced emotion has filled some lives with joy and caused others a lifetime of pain. 1 Corinthians tells us that love is patient and kind, but what should one do in the face of the unfortunate side of love? The leading lady in this novel grew up in church, so she was always taught to trust God. No matter how hard the circumstances, it was ingrained in her since youth to believe that all things would work together for good. However, the relationship she experienced was so traumatic, it altered her thinking and caused her faith to waver. The God whom she once referred to as Jehovah Jireh, the One who provides, had swiftly transformed to Jehovah Joker, the One who plays too much. After the unhealthy relationship ended, she skedaddled to a new city, hoping to leave all her heartache and shame behind in her hometown. Yet, she never took the time to heal properly, so every new relationship rapidly smeared with the residue of her past mistakes. One by one, the dysfunction from the previous relationship caused every subsequent union to fail miserably. This domino effect continued until she realized she had been trying to fill her God-sized voids with people and things that were empty themselves. Her unfulfilled need for love and acceptance caused her to lean on relationships for affirmation and social media likes for validation. Throughout her journey to wholeness and forgiveness, she found herself dating unhealthy replicas of herself. Every negative trait that she possessed, from confused and insecure, to manipulative, showed up in her dating life. She was searching for something and plowed through a whole heap of men trying to find it. All the while, the Lord was in the midst, carefully orchestrating experiences that would eventually make all roads lead back to Him.
