They came to America for safety. They found themselves enslaved...
David Crosby’s fifth hardboiled thriller kicks off with a heartrending discovery : a gritty underbelly of modern-day slavery that’s been operating in reporter Will Harper’s backyard. Will’s informant’s a terrified teenager-- a young Guatemalan immigrant who’s just escaped the elegant compound where she was enslaved as a maid. She’s on the run from hired goons who work for the sugar tycoon who held her captive, at the same time searching for her brother and sister, who’ve been sold as well.
All she knows is this—she and her siblings were enslaved by the smugglers they paid to help them enter the country. But Will soon finds that the network includes corrupt farmers, ruthless coyotes, scheming Russian mobsters, and countless henchmen, all of whom sell innocent refugees for back-breaking labor and forced sex work.
The timing’s good for a searing expose about slavery in Florida--a local paper’s put Will and his live-in girlfriend Callie on the payroll, allowing them to investigate anything they choose. The new job is just Will’s style: he and Callie can write as much or as little as they want, all while conducting research from Will’s beloved yacht, The WanderLust.
But suddenly Will’s mission turns urgent. As he starts to investigate, he stumbles upon the topic of waterborne sex trafficking--and quickly discovers a new meaning for the term “party boat." Soon, he learns that one of the missing siblings is being trafficked aboard a particularly notorious boat--which means that Will has an abrupt, action-packed rescue mission on his hands.
David Crosby grew up in Atlanta, GA, making weekly trips to the library with his Dad. Crosby’s love of reading became a love of imagination and creativity, which he finally found an outlet for in college at the University of Georgia. David received an ABJ degree in magazine writing from the UGA School of Journalism, but it was his newly discovered interest in photography that took over his working life. Starting at graduation, David spent eight years as a photojournalist for newspapers before a desire for self-employment led him to start his award winning commercial photography studio, Crosby Stills. David retired from photography after a 36-year career and is now writing. He's the author of eleven Will Harper Florida Thrillers, and the non-fiction book, Keeping Us Afloat. He lives in Land O Lakes, Florida, with his wife Marilyn, a retired Lutheran Pastor, and their lovable shih tzu, Zoe. Wanna get more exclusive Will Harper news? Enjoyed learning about illegal immigration and thoughts from the Immigrants viewpoint. Lots of action, Ocean and human interest stories. Unfortunately, the edits weren’t up to par with first part of the series.
While I enjoy the Will Harper Mystery series each book into the series seems to be more rushed than the previous. I'm finding relationship timeline errors, editing errors and far too much repetitive dialogue. The stories themselves are really good and are interesting. But the errors cause a major distraction and frustration.
I have read 4 other David Crosby novels. I am not sure whether I read the first one before or after I moved to Fort Myers, Florida. While I lived in Florida I read 2 more of his books. All of them are a treat. The plot always revolves around a crime or scam that takes place around Florida's Gulf coast, but many of the same greedy villains operate across our country taking advantage of the poor and working classes, and vulnerables like addicts, senior citizens and immigrants. Deadly Traffic is the story of 3 siblings from Guatemala whose family pays $5000 to get them across the US border then to Florida where they have contacts. The tale of course is about what often happens to vulnerable young people who think they are paying to start a new life in a country that honors those who wish to earn a living through hard work. Carmelina, Leilani and Pablo are enslaved by the men instead of being allowed to contact their friends or relatives in Florida. When Carmelina escapes from the mansion where she is locked up at night and forced to work 14 hour shifts cleaning the house and then forcibly raped by the rich owner, she is rescued by a shelter and she is brought to Will Harper and his girlfriend Ca!lie. They work to find and rescue the other two teenage siblings. As in his other investigations Will finds himself and his friends risking their lives to bring these 3 young people back together and trying to keep them from being returned to Guatemala. If you like stories about good people winning against insurmountable odds, and some greedy monsters get what they deserve (some I say because most are still out there protected by money and political power) . I recommend this book to anyone who believes being poor is not a crime and being too rich and powerful can lead to greed and corruption. I liked Crosby's book because it reminded me of the great people of Florida who live under one of the most corrupt and self-serving state governments in the US. A beautiful state that is being ruined by greed. At least David Crosby with his Will Harper books is trying to shine some light into this den of iniquity.
Another Wild Ride. Three siblings come to America, legal or other wise, and get abused. One is sold into slavery to work on a tomato farm, another to work in the sex industry and the third to work cleaning a rich mans house. Our Hero Will, saves them, then has to save them again, all the while working out his own romantic problems. This guy just cant catch a break btw in the woman department, but that is just a side story to keep things interesting, right? Once more Will nearly dies, his current Girl Friend nearly dies three times and he has to save her each time, the last time after they have broken up.
Human trafficking is the factual basis of this story, along with immigration abuses in the US. Crosby's Will Harper series is well-researched, fast-paced and riveting. The stories are concise, without the fluff found in many novels to make a book longer. There's a bit of romance, humor, interesting characters, bad guys, good guys, drama and mild violence. Crosby's epilogues also reference articles from his research into some truly appalling problems which exist in the US. Educational and entertaining. Bravo, David Crosby. Another Winner!
A good, little novel about a problem that runs rampant in Florida.( Human Trafficking ) Will Harper helped out a friend who knew about 3 siblings that had parents, who had paid $5,OOO.OO to pay their way to the US. When they got there, they each were sold immediately to scrupulous people. The sisters and the brother were separated and did ,not know if they would see each other again or not. But,good things happened and each one was rescued and reunited. They all got work at a B & B while waiting for permanent asylum.
This one in loves Will, Cassie, and all the others from the previous book. Cassie get a job as an assistant to Will when a billionaire takes over the paper, Then their Investigations take a deadly turn into the sex trafficking in South Florida area. Will and Cassie’s relationship may be in trouble. The ending is a heart pounding, fast action right up to the end.
David Crosby is a new author for me. I read Florida Shuffle. Got it from a free ebook website. Thank you. I Liked it. Took me a while to get the rhythm of his writing. Just finished Deadly Traffic. Really good book. I live in TX all we watched for 3 days on the news was that tractor trailer full of dead people. Your book hopefully will make more people aware of how truly horrific this crisis is. I’m moving on to the Happy Widow. You keep writing, I’ll keep reading. Thanks.

I like that David Crosby writes about real subjects and real problems in our country. Bringing these problems to light is definitely a good step toward starting to eliminate them.
Will and Callie are still together and decide to write a series of stories for the newspaper about human trafficking in Florida. That’s when the trouble starts. A great read.
Mr. Crosby's writing is good fiction based on facts of current social injustices, government corruption and daily atrocities that we all should know about. Good series!
Although the subject matter is important, I was not able to connect with the protagonist in this novel. I was also turned off by the Dan Brown style of telling, retelling and retelling the same information.
Will just can't keep his pants on while crusading for justice called is his latest causality as she can't help getting kidnapped and will to the rescue as always but now calorie has moved on and will alone bonnie shows up and down goes will.ciao from Bobbie and george
This continuing adventure of Will Harper doesn’t disappoint. His actions and doggedness to right wrongs are exciting to follow. Definitely a great read.
Another great book and a very important topic which needs to be looked into further . The USA 🇺🇸 is a country where people who come to should be taken care of.
Ehh…. I give this book a mediocre three stars. I could have easily gone for two stars but felt generous. Convenient, illogical, improbable, and unrealistic while some of it was entertaining.
I've read most of the books in the Will Harper series and this one did not measure up to the others. The plot was predictable and did not move at a fast pace.
