A heart-warming, uplifting romance served with a generous slice of cake
There’s no problem Becky Watson can’t fix. Except her own love life…
Struggling single mother Becky Watson longs to revive her career as a life-fixer, working miracles to solve her clients’ problems, no matter how big or small. Since the birth of her two-year-old son she has been stuck preventing wedding fiascos for the richest and rudest residents of the Comptons, a charming, leafy area of southern England known for its artistic heritage.
So when semi-reclusive local artist Charlie Handren reluctantly hires Becky to fix his six-year creative slump, she’s delighted to set him up with a come-back exhibition and Rachel Stone, the woman of his dreams.
Though they get off to a rocky start, Becky and Charlie soon become close. But as the beautiful Rachel becomes Charlie’s muse, Becky is forced to wonder: will giving Charlie everything he wants mean giving up her own happily ever after?
A heart-warming, uplifting romance served with a generous slice of cake.

Claire Huston’s debut novel, Art and Soul is a heart-warming, pleasant read. It’s a perfect escape romance with a confident (and scheming… in a good way) female lead. Huston writes like a seasoned author. I was surprised that this was her first publishing effort.
Charlie is a renowned local artist who is unfortunately in a huge slump. He’s been in this runt since a scathing review of his work some years ago. Enter Becky the fixer. Yes, that’s her job, she fixes things. The two strike up a work agreement to improve his career and love life.
The characters in this story are fun and vivid. The author writes cute, likeable people. I feel this will be a trademark of her future stories. I was in the mood for an easy romance comedy with mature characters and that is exactly what I got. The couple are in their 40s and 50s. Their life details will fit in with many reader’s situations. If an author can make me smile constantly without going over the top, I’m sold.
The setting is a small, but affluent town. The snobby residents are spot on and extra snooty. They made me smile all the more. We are also presented with sassy friends and a rambunctious toddler. Oh so good.
Becky and Charlie work together to bring him out of his gloomy situation. The storyline progressed in a way that I found myself rooting for him and his teenage daughter.
The novel was a bit longer that it needed to be. It felt a little cumbersome at times and drawn out. I’m not sure what I’d suggest cutting out since it was all so good. Perhaps she had the makings of a series.
If you are looking for a feel-good story, pick up Art and Soul. I will definitely read more from this author.
If there is such a thing as a cozy romance novel, Art & Soul is it. With a cute book cover, how can one not resist picking up a copy to read?
The primary players in Art & Soul are Rebecca Watson and John (Charlie) Handren. Rebecca is a lifestyle and crisis management counselor tasked with rehabilitating former prominent artist, Charlie. Once an artistic icon, Charlie is now considered a washed-out has-been on the verge of sinking into oblivion. It's up to Rebecca to come up with a plausible plan of action.
The storyline was sweet and played out smoothly, with the minor characters adding depth and dimension. There were some lovable and some not so lovable characters that made the story interesting and engaging.
Art & Soul was an easy read that is sure to make you feel warm and fuzzy all over. Four and a half stars, rounded up.
I received a digital copy of the book from the author, Claire Huston. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
ART & SOUL is a slow burn contemporary story that I was pulled in to from the very first page. To be honest, I fell in love with the cover the minute I saw it. I knew I would read it anyway, because the blurb captured me, but the cover really pulled me in. A cupcake and a heart…..I mean what’s not to love? I loved everything about this beautiful story and I’m excited to recommend it to my reading friends. Claire Huston has a way of grabbing her readers and she never lets us go.
ART & SOUL really takes a turn that will have you unable to put this beautiful story down. Neither Becky or Charlie are looking for a relationship, but they can’t seem to ignore their growing feelings. Becky has been burned in the past and has no desire to go down that road again! How is it possible that Becky can fix other people’s lives but has no idea how to fix her own? She feels like a fraud at times. Charlie is a very talented artist with a seventeen year old daughter. He has become a recluse and his sister thinks Becky can help him rejoin the world! It was cute watching these two dance around their feelings for each other.
ART & SOUL is filled with twists and turns and had me staying up way too late one night to finish! I had to know where Claire Huston was taking us and what would happen to Charlie and Becky. There is so much heart in Claire’s writing that I was left with a huge smile on my face and my heart very happy. I could totally see ART & SOUL becoming a Hallmark movie and I would love to see it. All of the characters are very interesting and believable, so much so that I felt as if I’ve known them for a long time. I would love to hang out with Phoebe. I’m sure she could teach me a thing or two and I know her and Dylan would keep my laughing all day long! I am now a Claire Huston fan and look forward to reading all of her books in the future!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.
Art and Soul, by Claire Huston was a wonderful surprise. I never expected that I would enjoy this book as much as I did. After reading this book, I will definitely be looking for more books by Claire. Her characters are so realistic and lovable. I couldn't believe Becky's skills as a "fixer". I had not idea what a fixer did, but as I read this story, not only was I in awe of Becky, but I also laughed out loud several times. She was a wonderful mom, friend and employee. She threw herself wholeheartedly into her job with Charlie and his daughter Phoebe. Charlie was adorable. A man who seldom spoke and when he did, only said what was necessary. He just wanted to be left alone, but if he wanted to make a living for himself and his daughter, he needed to find his muse. There were several secondary characters that were also likable and a great part of the story, but there were also some that I loved to hate. The friendship that grew between Charlie and Becky was amazing. They grew to trust one another more than spouses often did. This was especially important when it came to Becky's two year old son. She felt very comfortable leaving him with Charlie, and Charlie felt the same. There was a lot to laugh about in this story, there was a lot to awe about and some that made me a bit weepy, but overall, it was a great uplifting story about friendship, trust, love and self-confidence. You will cheer at the end of this one when all Becky's hard work comes to fruition, but the journey to get there was even better. I definitely recommend this one if you enjoy a wonderful contemporary story with a happy ending.

A pragmatic single mother helping a troubled artist rediscover his talent
Art and Soul is a story of coping with divorce, accepting help, and rediscovering happiness in a least-expected manner.
Charles was a 50yo famous artist, not in a great moment in his career. After a harsh critique was published in the local papers, he had let his hair and beard grow and lost all inspiration to paint.
He was also still wearing his wedding ring, even though his wife had left him 6 years before. He lived with his teenage daughter, Phoebe.
Desperate, Charlie’s sister reached out to Becky, a life coach specialized in helping people sort themselves out and reorganizing their lives. Becky also took side jobs as a wedding planner and was a single mother of a sweet toddler.
Charles was reluctant to hire Becky, but he relented to please his daughter and sister.
Practical Becky and dreamy Charlie clashed at every turn, but slowly they started balancing each other. A lovely friendship blossomed, but too many things were on their way.
Charlie was interested in a gorgeous art gallery manager, Becky had her son and her many jobs to deal with, and on top of that, a handsome man insisting on taking her to dinner.
An enchanting story about two people getting to know each other and slowly finding all they have in common despite their apparent differences.
I love how helpful Charlie was in Becky’s time of need and how lovely he was to her toddler son, Dylan.
I enjoy stories that deal with unrequited love, and this book had some delicious angst moments.
The side characters were lovely, especially the meddling Ronnie. Everyone needs a Ronnie in their lives.
The writing flows effortlessly, and the narrative is very well-built. My first book by this author, and I can’t wait to read more by her.
Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Art and Soul is a lovely romance by author, Claire Huston. Becky Watson has recently returned to work following a long maternity leave and is finding it isn't that easy to re-establish her connections as a life coach. She has taken some jobs as an assistant at various upmarket weddings where she helps ensure that any potential people created problems are prevented or smoothed over. These jobs don't pay particularly well and her finances are not in a good state.
Charlie is a well-known painter whose life unraveled badly after his wife left him and their young daughter several years before. His daughter and his sister are worried about his behaviour which has become more and more reclusive. He is also drinking more and is unable to paint at all. His recent painting have been harshly criticized by the art world who believe he has lost his inspiration.
Charlie's sister contacts Claire and asks her to speak to her brother with a view to her helping him rekindle his enthusiasm for life and painting. Claire desperately needs the money so she agrees to try and help him, but knows it will be difficult due to Charlie's uncooperative attitude. After a difficult start to their relationship, Charlie eventually agrees to try out Becky's proposal and to re-launch himself and his work at an exhibition in only six months time. She also plans to help him rekindle a romance with a woman he fancied a while back.
I really liked Claire who was straightforward and forthright most of the time. Her only area of failure was in expressing her own emotions and feelings but that was understandable given that the father of her child had lied to her and devastated her trust. Claire has Charlie's best interests at heart and will put her own welfare aside to help him move forward with his goals.
I like Charlie on the whole although he demonstrated a few spiteful and selfish characteristics that spoiled him a bit for me. I felt that he was a bit unpredictable and would have like Becky to have been interested in a more understanding man who didn't lash out at her from time to time. Charlie also didn't always come across as sufficiently supportive of his teenage daughter who really needed him.
The art aspects of this book were really interesting and I enjoyed reading about Charlie's style of artwork compared to some of the very famous names. I also liked reading about Becky's friend, a baker of the most delectable sounding cakes and who owned a cake shop. I am a big baker myself and I enjoyed the appearance of the odd amazing cake or two.
This was a sweet and uplifting romance baring a few occasions when Charlie fell from grace in my opinion. It will leave you routing for a good outcome for Claire and her cute son and even grumpy Charlie who has a lot of goodness about him.
Art&Soul is a wonderful debut novel with two flawed characters and a beautiful slow-burn romance.
I always love a creative mind and when I read the blurb for this story I knew I had to know more about Charlie and Becky. Firstly, the setting of the story is here, in the UK, and that’s a fresh point of view because it’s a beautiful country that needs more contemporary stories out in the world. It’s a very well written book, with an unexpected mix of characters and jobs description, full of witty banter and interactions, so many inner monologues and a slow burn romance that takes its time to become perfect. I enjoyed the growing up moments, the realisation of what they want for their future and the acceptance of everything around them. If you enjoy a good, uplifting story, this book is definitely a great choice.
The main character of this book, Becky, is of those people that has their finger on the pulse of the world around them. One that can plan and deftly manipulate situations around them, pick up on subtle nuances that others miss and act before anyone else realizes there may even be a problem. A master mind.
In my past readings I have found master minds to be either criminal in nature or Holmesian. Never have I found a master mind to be a single parent, working as a life coach and when those jobs run dry working in the background at the fanciest weddings to make sure everything runs smoothly. But Becky makes it work. In fact she makes everything work.
But, alas, like all masterminds, sleuth, criminal and otherwise, she has her own blind spot. And, as I’m sure you could guess from the title and cover alone, it’s her personal love life. And that is what makes the book a sweet romance that is just a little different than any other I have I read.
Would I recommend it? Also she eats a lot of cake.(That means yes!)
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I discovered this book because I’m a proud member of Rosie’s Book Review Team!
Great love story!!! I really enjoyed this heartwarming romance! The characters seemed so real and were well written. It included the ups and downs, hopes and dreams, fears and even interjects some humor along the way. Can’t wait to read more from this author. My honest review in exchange for the free ARC. Thank you Hidden Gems!!!
This is a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I hadn’t read anything by this author before, so wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve discovered she’s going straight onto my favourites list as someone who writes books that are a pleasure to escape into with great characters and plenty of twists and turns to keep you wondering how everything can be resolved.
Becky Watson is a fixer for other people – it is her job! Unfortunately she can’t fix her own life in the same way she does for everyone else. She’s a single Mum with a mischievous two year old son and she has been contacted by someone who would like Becky to fix her brother, John Charles Handren (aka Charlie), because he seems to have become a recluse, apart from when he’s dealing with his seventeen year old daughter, Phoebe. He reluctantly agrees to hire Becky and she sets out to help him return to being a successful artist and hopes to help him find love again, too. However, the best laid plans so often go wrong . . . . just how, you’ll have to read the book to find out!
I was so impressed with Becky as a character – she’s brilliant at discovering just the right person to help move things in the right direction! As the relationship between Becky and Charlie develops there are plenty of laugh out loud moments and it definitely put a huge grin on my face as I read it. This is a delightful book to totally escape into, packed with humour, love, friendships, family and romance. I’ll definitely be looking for more by this talented author in future!
I requested and was gifted a copy of this book and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.
Art & Soul is a wonderful contemporary romance with well-developed characters, an interesting story, and a lovely slow-building romance that includes themes of family, friendship, and starting over. The book follows Becky, a life coach tasked with aiding Charlie, a reclusive artist in a major slump. Can she pull Charlie out of his slump and help him straighten out his life while figuring out her own life as well? Becky and Charlie’s relationship starts tumultuously. However, as Charlie finds his muse in another art aficionado, he and Becky slowly realize that love can be found in the most unexpected of places.
One of my favorite aspects of the story is the fabulous cast of characters. Becky, for example, is so determined and driven, and she has an excellent take-charge personality. She’s not dissuaded by the obstacles that get in her way, which I admire. I also find it interesting that though Becky is great at reading other people and fixing their lives, she is not as attuned to her own feelings and desires. Her character is so well-layered and relatable and definitely one of my favorites in the story.
In contrast, where Becky is more outgoing and forthcoming, Charlie is introverted and finds it difficult to express himself. He is fully aware of his feelings but struggles to verbalize them. Though Becky and Charlie are quite different, they do have some things in common. They both love their children, they are both recovering from failed relationships, and they are both starting over. They also both have a deep respect for different kinds of art, another aspect of the story that I loved! Throughout the story, there are references to art and literature that are fantastic!
Becky and Charlie develop a good working relationship and a strong friendship before they realize that it might have grown into something more. The way that Charlie takes to Becky’s two-year-old son Dylan is endearing, as is the way he steps up when Becky finds herself incapacitated. Becky, not used to letting others take charge, sees Charlie in a whole new light. Their relationship grew naturally and charmingly and shows how two very different people can find love with each other.
Dylan isn’t the only fabulous secondary character. Becky’s meddlesome friend Ronnie, Charlie’s bright teenaged daughter Phoebe, and the mysterious and wealthy Lloyd all stole my heart and added the perfect mix of levity and realism to the story. I particularly appreciated Ronnie as she is honest, observant, helpful, and an all-around good friend. Plus, she bakes the most fantastic sounding desserts!
A heart-warming, feel-good contemporary romance, the novel also delves into some deeper issues. The author explores divorce, dealing with the difficulties of parenting, and opening yourself up to love again with honesty and realism. Who hasn’t dealt with a difficult client, an impatient toddler, or a meddling best friend? The messages and characters throughout the story are very relatable and relevant.
I loved Art and Soul! It’s the perfect light yet layered read that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. And this is her debut novel! Claire Huston is a dynamic storyteller, and I’m so thankful to have received a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
I am not generally a reader of romance but every now and again when I have had a surfeit of serial killers, twisty suspense and police procedurals, I need a break from all that heart-wrenching and gore.
Art and Soul really hits the spot. It’s not at all fluffy and silly – in fact it has an element of real literature – I feel the author has a ‘literary’ novel just waiting to get out. Lots of references to artists, Shakespeare and Marlowe lift it above the usual sugary tales of will they won’t they. It’s also so beautiful written, I feel the author’s talent will be wasted on pure romance books. I don’t mean to insult the genre, but I think there is so much more to come from her.
As the main protagonist, Becky is a feisty, bossy woman approaching 40 who knows she is good at her job as a ‘fixer’ but has no confidence in her own attractiveness. She has been ‘once bitten, twice shy’ in a relationship with a married man (she had no idea he was married) that left her with Dylan – an adorable toddler who charms his way into her friends’ affection.
Then there is Charlie – an almost 50-year-old artist who has fallen into a creative slump after his wife Mel leaves and his reviews are terrible. But it’s the periphery characters who really made this book for me. We have best friend Ronnie, who own Sweets the cake shop, and is direct to the point of rudeness, but never nasty. Always truthful, wise and trying to help. Handsome ladies’ man Virgil – I almost loved him best – he is so funny. Dashing Lloyd – but is he really a secret villain and philanderer? Charlie’s teenage daughter Phoebe and the beautiful but ghastly Rachel and her mother Barbara Stone – both involved in the snooty world of art in the leafy suburb The Comptons.
I can’t fault this story. It’s fab and uplifting and just what we need to cheer us up during second lockdown. Well done Claire – you deserve every success and I look forward to your next book.
PS and as someone who recently took up abstract or ‘non-figurative painting’ I am looking for my muse to visit me in my dreams. Get down Pancake (my 16-year-old Jack Russell) – I don’t mean you!
I'm not going to lie - the mention of a slice of cake was the hook to get me to read this book. However, what I enjoyed so much more were the art references!
We meet Becky just as she's been asked to intervene and fix the life of a semi-reclusive artist. You can imagine how that goes at first - basically he tells her to just get lost. However, Becky wins him round and gets the job as his life coach and a promise to hook him up with the woman of his dreams, Rachel Stone, the owner of a local gallery. I had a picture of a young Grace Kelly in my mind when Rachel was described, she sounds perfect (well to look at at least!).
Becky is a really realistic and down to earth character and that was true for the whole book. I felt like I had taken a peek into a real life situation. Whilst Charlie the artist, hankers after Rachel. It soon becomes apparent that Becky likes Charlie, especially as he seems to get on so well with her young son. But he's made it clear he likes Rachel and now he's got an exhibition at her gallery so they are spending a lot of time together.
I could really see this being made into a film. The plot wouldn't be amiss in a Jane Austen novel, with suitors and misunderstandings, all with a side of cake served by the wonderful best friend Ronnie. Let's not forget the art though. The author obviously knows a lot about art and described to perfection a few paintings I have seen in real life. I loved the scene where Becky got one of Charlie's paintings into The National Gallery - if only very temporarily, before a Klimt took its place.
I think this book has something for everyone and it was all for me down to a T, I loved it. I can't believe this is a first novel. The writing has a richness of words that wrap around you and make you feel so cosy. The plot had depth with well developed characters. I was sorry when it ended.
This book was simply beautiful. It made me smile and my heart swell. I was hooked from page 1.
I really liked the characters, they were really well developed and my heart really went out to Becky, struggling to do her best and provide for her son. I loved the friendships that were built especially Becky and Ronnie.
This is a must read for anyone who loves a cute and warm story. An amazing debut novel from Claire and I really look forward to reading more from her. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Art and Soul is the perfect read for contemporary romance lovers who enjoy a cosy, heartwarming tale with realistic characters and expectations.
The story is perfectly paced and the character’s lives interweave effortlessly. Becky is a life coach and Charlie is a floundering actor who needs all the help he can get. The way the two back and forth, become entwined in each other’s lives, yet still can’t see what’s right in front of them, is what I read romance books for!
A brilliant light hearted debut by Claire Huston, she created bright and vibrant characters that were easy to visualise and with a great contrast of personalities. I loved Becky and the tactics she adopted to reach her goals, I love a savvy woman and she jumped right off the pages at me.
I have a daughter who loves to paint and I loved the artistic descriptions and how Charlie's muse was bought into the story. A book brimming with complicated relationships, problem solving, friendship and jealousy.
I really enjoyed this story and will definitely look out for more from Claire Huston in the future.
A bit of love and warmth was just what I needed this week, as it has been a really tough one for a variety of reasons, so this lovely book which took me away from my everyday problems and gave me some positivity and hope was the perfect tonic. It was a really easy read, but made me feel a lot of different emotions too, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This is the story of two people who are very different and meet in inauspicious circumstances, which is pretty much par for the course in romance novels, but what elevates this above the herd are the fantastic and believable characters that the author draws, and the novel and interesting situation she puts them in.
Our female protagonist is Becky, a life coach with a difference, because rather than just telling people what changes they can make to improve their lives, she is also kind of a fixer who sorts out ‘problems’ discreetly. Remember Winston Wolf from Pulp Fiction? She is kind of a female version, without the blood and crime! Some of the scenarios Claire created around this premise were really funny, I loved the wedding one with Virgil and his cousins. Do people like this really exist? Is this a real job? I’ve never heard of it but if it is, I think I missed my vocation!
Becky finds herself hired to help Charlie, an artist whose career is in the doldrums after a hatchet job in an art magazine and some personal traumas that have disrupted his work. To say he is reluctant to accept Becky’s help is an understatement, but boy does he need it. Their relationship gets off to a fiery start, but Becky is nothing if not persistent, and she has her own personal reasons for needing to keep the contract with Charlie.
I was really drawn in to the book by the genuine, complex relationship that develops between Becky and Charlie and the extended characters that surround them, and by the really interesting dynamics of the two worlds they inhabit, neither of which I know much about. The writing is clear and lively and engaging and I romped through the text, enthralled on every page. There are no dull moments in the book, so slack passages where the plot fails to move on. You can forget you are in the pages of a book and feel like you are listening to a friend telling you a story.
For anyone who enjoys a light but moving romance, this would be a perfect book to add to your list. I highly recommend it to you, one and all.
The best romance is one which grows out of friendship, but will Becky Watson ever find common ground with morose, grumpy artist, Charlie Handren? Becky is returning to her job as a life coach and fixer of crises, after her maternity leave, and as a single mother she needs this major contract to augment her other job as the invisible fairy godmother at weddings, calming family tensions. Living in the Comptons, a wealthy, upmarket area in the south of England with a strong artistic tradition, it would be a triumph if she could help Charlie to regain his ability to paint after 6 years lamenting his failed marriage. Arranging an exhibition to relaunch his career does not phase Becky, but helping him to woo Rachel Stone, the woman he admires from afar is more challenging.
The story’s warmth is created by the vivid characters surrounding events. Becky’s 2-year-old son, Dylan, captivates Charlie and her friend, Ronnie, cake creator extraordinary, is a breath of fresh air. Becky’s ability to convince the “movers and shakers” of the community that the exhibition will be spectacular, demonstrate her understanding of people and her trust in Charlie even though he no longer trusts himself. The fact that she is secretly paddling away below the surface to keep herself financially afloat is all the more admirable. An unusual but engaging story to read late into the night.
Art and Soul is the debut book by Claire Huston and is both genteel and charming.
Becky is returning to work after taking a year off on maternity leave but she is finding it hard to get her clients back. Charlie is a painter sinking into obscurity, through both circumstances and his own behaviour. Together, these two can get Charlie back into the limelight and get him the woman of his dreams... but what about Becky?
For a simple storyline, this book was surprisingly complex and intriguing. Becky was a great character, being straightforward in certain situations and yet completely blind in others. Charlie was the more tentative of the two, easily being led by Becky and Rachel. I would have liked him to have been a little stronger but then I'm not the author!
Two things I loved about this book - 1) the main characters are not in their 20's! and 2) it was set in the UK. It makes a nice change for it not to be the US.
The scene setting was brilliant and both Becky and Charlie are helped along by a wonderful supporting cast. This was a lighthearted read without any major angst that kept my interest and the pages turning. Absolutely recommended by me.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *
Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Sep 14, 2020
Overall 4.5* This book is a great story especially as it is the first from Claire Hudson. It is funny and poignant at times and is about Becky, a single mum who is struggling to keep her head above water financially. She is stubborn enough not to ask for help from her son's father however that means she sometimes has to take on jobs that only highlight her predicament. She is a life fixer/ wannabe coach and mainly sorts out weddings for the rich and famous of the Comptons. When she is asked to help a local artist who has had a major slump, she isn't too sure however being Becky, she takes the job on and does her best to revive Charlie's career and his love life, only she isn't too sure that she wants to! This was a lovely, gentle, though page turning read and would recommend reading it. I read this book as an ARC for review for my book club.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I loved the characters!
The book was very well written and I loved the flow that the author had to the story.
The story was lovely, it was easy to follow and I thought that the characters were excellent, they were really well developed and they worked well together too – I loved their interaction and it made the book a special read too.
I will definitely be looking out for more books from this author in the future, this was a delightful read and already want to read more!
It is 4.5 stars from me for this one, rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads and Amazon - it was a lovely story and it is definitely one that I will be very highly recommending!
This was a lovely, gentle, entertaining book - just right for this uncertain times. Becky proved to be a force to reckon with, and it would be a pity to not hear more about her ways, managing people and situations invisibly and manipulating things to her - or her client's - advantage. Pushy Becky indeed! But lovable with it. And Charlie made a great hero, and a strong foil to Becky's managing ways. The story is full of interesting characters, from Ronnie at the cake shop to Lloyd and Virgil. If you're looking for a light read then try this.
'Art and Soul' is an amusing, poignant romance with a refreshingly original plot. Professionally Becky is a successful fixer of people's lives. Unfortunately, her love life needs repair. Charlie is a particularly challenging client, who reluctantly engages her, to save his career as an artist.
Arty details, add authenticity to the story and Becky and Charlie's relationship is a lovely mix of conflict, humour and gentle romance.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
I would firstly like to say a huge thank you to the author for gifting me a copy of this book in return for an honest review. Becky is a single mum who is working really hard to make ends meet. She organises weddings and try’s to ensure that everything runs smoothly. This story was wonderful, I really enjoyed it. All the characters were down to earth and believable and the overall feel of the book was very uplifting and heartwarming. I really enjoyed this easy to read story and would highly recommend it. There’s a few twists an turns that kept me wanting to read more and more.
An easy, enjoyable read. Becky is a fixer of problems, no matter how big or small, helping the rich on their wedding day worries and woes. Becky seems to be able to manipulate any problem, making it work for her and her clients alike. I loved Charlie the artistic hero, who was in a slump for six years and asking Becky for her expertise. The twists and turns in the book left me wanting more, each page turned gave me this and more. I loved it, highly recommend
Wow! Brilliantly written book, I just couldn’t put it down! Becky and Charlie are the main characters and the author has written this so well I can picture them in my minds eye - well done! The story is fab and just what’s needed at this time in the world
Aw! This is such a wonderful story! You fall in love with Becky and you fall in love with Charlie then spend the read cheering them on through the ups and downs of the story. Wonderfully crafted and truly romantic, this book is a perfect rainy day read!
This was a great read. An original story line with strong characters. A slow burn romance that the unassuming but feisty heroine is the last to notice. A romcom with fascinating characterisation and lots of emotion.
Single mother Becky Watson has a unusual job. She is a life-fixer, doing everything within her power to help solve her clients’ problems. Kind of like a life coach but a lot more involved with a hint of meddling. Her next big problem or should I say client comes in the form of Charlie Handren, a local artist who is stuck in a creative slump. He is extremely reluctant to hire her at first, insisting he doesn’t need her help. But eventually Becky manages to worm her way in and suggests a come-back exhibition that will take his career to the next level alongside fixing his love life. However the course of true love never does run smoothly and Becky soon finds out how difficult this task proves to be, she needs to make this job a success. Becky’s financial problems are weighing up against her and this could be her last chance to avoid years of frustrating make-do work and money troubles. She could finally spend more time with Dylan and give him the best life possible. A lot is riding on this one job, she has to fix Charlie’s life even if that means ignoring her own growing feelings, she can’t let herself get too involved. Success in her job means appearing unflappable and as we learn about her past we start to understand why Becky hates surprises. This job gives her the biggest surprise of her life.
This story follows a third person narration. I enjoyed this as it allowed the reader to not only know what Becky was feeling but to also get a glimpse into Charlie’s head. Both characters will equally frustrate you dear reader, you will find yourself screaming at them and their stubbornness. First impressions are everything, or so I am told, you only get them once. Charlie first rang Becky when he was drunk as he needed the Dutch courage to take the next step in sorting his life out. Charlie’s sister Lauren emailed Becky with further details and Becky was more than willing to offer her services. When the two finally meet face to face it isn’t the stuff of fairy tales. Charlie appears scruffy with paint on his clothes and messy hair, he can’t wait to get rid of her. Whereas in comparison, Becky is smartly dressed and ready to do business. It becomes very clear from the start that Charlie does not want Becky meddling in his life but it’s obvious that he needs her. We soon learn that Charlie and his wife, Mel separated 6 years ago and he has an 18 year old daughter, Phoebe who takes an interest in Becky’s work and starts helping her out. It takes a while but soon Charlie starts to appreciate Becky’s hard work as signs of improvement begin to show.
Becky as a character was inspiring to read. How she is able to sort peoples’ lives out and limit damage control at weddings as her second job is amazing. All on top of being a single mother to her son Dylan. Her job as a life-fixer is to basically sort out peoples’ lives. She talks with the client about their life at the moment, any routines and such, then goes away to come up with a proposal of what she thinks can help improve their current situation. She is extremely involved. Phoebe and Lauren strongly believe that Becky can help Charlie which puts a ton of pressure on her to succeed. We watch her meddle and do everything she can to give Charlie’s career and life that much needed kick up the backside to get going again. Charlie doesn’t give Becky an easy time and is not a great conversationalist. Becky has to learn to read his nonverbal cues and do what she can to make things work. You can feel the frustration as you want Becky to succeed and wish Charlie would open up more. It keeps you hooked and intrigued about how this is all going to end. For better or worse? The tension between Becky and Charlie is intense. They have a love and hate relationship and get along more than they would care to admit.
Alongside relaunching his art career, Becky also works on sorting out Charlie’s love life. She learns that he is interested in Rachel Stone, the manager of the Coulson Gallery in town who instantly takes a dislike to Becky. The two characters clash and I found myself yelling at the page for Rachel to back off. You find yourself fully immersed in the characters’ world and feel a part of the story.
The story introduces a variety of interesting characters such as Ronnie who owns Sweet’s Cakes and is also Becky’s best friend. I loved spending time in Sweet’s Cakes. The heavenly smells of cinnamon, chocolate and freshly baked bread made my mouth water, it sounded delicious. I could spend hours in there having a natter over tea and cake with Ronnie and Becky. It felt safe and warm. I really want cake now.
I give Art and Soul By Claire Huston a Five out of Five paw rating.
Be prepared to have a lot of sweet treats to hand when reading this book dear reader as it will make you hungry. This is a story that will charm its way into your heart, give you a cup of tea and slice of cake before showing you some intriguing artwork. You fall in love with the characters, the scenery, pretty much everything about this delightful story. You will find yourself struggling to pull yourself away from the moment you begin reading, it pulls you in and you become reluctant to leave. It’s a romance with a dash of reality, things don’t always appear as they seem.
