Werner Heisenberg in The Physicist’s Conception of Nature, relies on numerous extracts from the greats that preceded him – Newton, Galileo, Kepler, Descartes, Ostwald, and de Broglie, to name a few. For a good summary of the history of physics and its impact on the subsequent scientific research in the twentieth century, I encourage you to read this short book.

In a nod to the engineering community, who work with scientific advances, Heisenberg writes, “Technology is a consequence of science in that a technical exploitation of the forces of nature is generally possible only on the basis of a close understanding of a particular field.”

Heisenberg cautions his scientific colleagues not to get carried away with their acquired knowledge and recognize that modern science lost its modesty during the nineteenth century. He writes, “Physical knowledge was considered to make assertions about nature as a whole. Physics wished to turn philosopher, and the demand was voiced from many quarters that all true philosophers must be scientific.” In the 1950s, physics underwent, as he says, “a basic change, the most characteristic trait of which is a return to its original self-limitation . . . The philosophic content of a science is only preserved if science is conscious of its limits.”

He suggests scientists stick to their field of inquiry and philosophers philosophize about the impact of the advance of science and technology.

An interesting book about how the scientific progress influenced the conception of nature. The first half of the book is written as an essay and explores the main properties of nature conception (from a scientific and a philosophical standpoint) and their evolution during the last centuries. The second part contains some texts extracted from important science/philosophy books (Galilei, Kepler, Newton, De Broglie,...). These are presented in chronological order and offer a good insight over the concepts explained in the first section. The book provides a quite fascinating outline of how the modern ideas of relativity and quantum physics influence our perception (or at least, scientists' perception) of the world around us, by radically modifying the fundamental principles of causality and determinism.

Short but poignant philosophy on epistemology and ontology, backed by hard physics and an appreciation of the humanities.

Heisenberg believes we have moved on from a Newtonian (or Democritus-style) determinism. Physics have gotten weird enough for us to not be able to make hard assertions any more. In this place he makes the phenomenological move (we cannot study Nature, only our relationship with Nature), yet he does not go full ontological relativism like Husserl or Heidegger. He still believes in science as seeking Truth-out-there.

He also appreciates the humanist mind, and does not shy away from exploring the crisis of modern man facing a meaningless mechanical Universe. In this note he might even go as far as to admire classical piety in someone like Kepler.

Anyway, I am of the opinion that the best philosophy is most times written by non-philosophers.

After reading Heidegger's essay - 'The Question concerning Technology', I pursued this book - referenced by Heidegger. A digest of technical thought and an atlas to the growth of modern understanding, it exposes the reader to the perspectives that are behind styles of 'knowing' about things. Beginning with the discoveries of Keppler, the procession through Descartes to the quantum paradox of observation itself provides an orientation regarding how things stand. Things, in the most elementary sense of the word, are fascinating. Written for the layman but including some arcane writings from the 16th century to the present in excerpt, the chosen passages serve Heisenberg's pedagogical approach.

I've really enjoyed reading this little book. Author is showing us differences between the old and the new picture of physics. Self-confident positivists have tried to eliminate philosophy and speculation in science. Today, scientists are becoming more and more modest, because latest revolutionary achievements in science have shown us we can never be 100% sure and that vulgar empiricism is not enough. Second half of the book is kind of an addendum with original texts from notable physicists trough history.

Incredible book. I read it in Serbian, it is easy to read and first three chapters of the book are an incredible introduction to the topic of atomic physics and it's difference from materialistic physics regarding the causation. The book also takes on the question of importance of Greek atomistic philosophy for atomic physics.
