As always, a pleasure to read. Mary Blake is a great amateur detective: not afflicted with encyclopedic knowledge of obscure topics related to crime/detection, not given to convoluted explanations of logical deduction and/or psychology.
Other characters. Well developed in "When the Party Died", Dot and Pea were all but absent in this book. They were there all right, but they didn't do almost anything at all the except gaze at each other adoringly.
The storylines for all three of these books are great. The characters are great. These are books you don't want to put down until you've gotten to the end. But... Mr. Barnett needs better proofreaders. There are enough errors that get in the way of truly enjoying the books. I do report the errors when I see them, and I'm sure other readers do as well. So why aren't they being corrected? When I pay to read books (which I did for the second and third ones), I expect them to have been thoroughly edited. Sadly, these weren't.
This mystery was enjoyable to read. I read it pretty quickly as it held my interest from the first few sentences. It had a few errors, though such as omitted words, misspellings and wrong names of characters listed in sentences. I look forward to reading more adventures of Mary Blake, her brother, Pea and her friend, Dot Tanner. I highly recommend this book to other mystery readers.
The proofreading was lacking. A quick read through would have been sufficient to catch quite a few typos, wrong words, and at least one wrong name (involving the murderer no-less)!
Otherwise the mystery was as good as the rest of the series. An enjoyable quick read.
All 3 are excellent. So very hard to put down. Mary may have been an actress but has a good head on her shoulders. Great mystery and I didn't get it until the very end. I recommend all of the Mary Baker mystery series.
...but ultimately worth the effort. I have warmed to the characters as they have finally blossomed. But for me, he just has to fill out the stories a little better and a little sooner. But I will certainly buy another if he writes one.
Again a number of suspects. Each has a reason to commit murder. The vicar for pointing to the wrong person. Then the reporter who was after Mary. Then Frank the pub owner. Everyone could be guilty.
The author constantly described situations or people as "bloody." Not necessary or effective. Also grew weary of pea's stupid remarks and behavior. And Mary went to bed with Corrigan rather suddenly. Not as good as the previous two books
While I thoroughly enjoyed Barnett's other series, this one didn't measure up in my mind. The characters were much thinner and the plots not as engaging.
As always it was fun to see Mary Blake again. The fomer TV detective is now trying to set herself up as a private detective in this one. Which was great and it was a fun case. It was brilliant.
Totally enjoyed it! This is a well written and has well developed characters. The story is catching and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
