Lady Selina Balfour would make the perfect duchess. But the Duke of Caversham is far from her idea of the perfect husband.
Malcolm Locke is everything Selina hates about powerful men – reckless, arrogant, and all too aware of his own chiselled jaw. Which makes it all the more important that Selina’s candidate beats his in the upcoming election. Someone needs to teach the duke to behave.
The first lesson? Kissing a woman until her knees go weak isn’t enough to make her give up her ideals.
Everyone knows that Malcolm is in dire need of a respectable duchess, an heir, and an end to his rivalry with Selina. But why is he so determined to pursue the one woman who’ll never have him?
Selina’s not sure she wants to know the answer. Her wounded heart is more than she can risk. But she’ll happily take on the duke in the political arena, if a war is what he wants.
There’s only one possible outcome. Defeat for one. Victory for the other.
Unless there’s a sweet surrender in store for them both…
This is the fourth book in the series The Impossible Balfours. You do not have to read the other books to enjoy this one, but there are some connections between the books which will reward readers of the whole series.
This was an engaging read. Lady Selina Balfour was a very capable lady and was sure of herself and what she wanted from life. Selina was used to helping out her family in various ways. She had loved once and doesn’t want to suffer loss again. Malcolm, Duke of Caversham, was trying to live up to his father’s image. He had never experienced a loving family relationship. I enjoyed their interactions, some frosty, some heartfelt and some loving. There was also the questionable voting tactics in an election, that play a part in the story and whether Malcolm would come out if his father’s shadow and become his own man. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I read a lot of historical romances and I really enjoy when the author puts a twist on the usual expectations of the genre. It’s not often in a historical romance that the reader pretty much learns that the Hero is besotted with the Heroine from the beginning.m of the book. Besotted is code for IN LOVE. Alas, Malcolm, our gorgeous Grace doesn’t quite realize he is in love with Lady Selina. He tends to define his feelings as a desire to find the perfect candidate to be his Duchess. But we know it’s love. Readers don’t often get to experience the self-reflection both of these characters engage in. Both are in for some epic growth from the beginning to the end. Throw in an election, well-meaning, protective and helpful siblings, an adorable dog, a fear of rain, bribery, an eccentric aunt, a lady who NEVER dances and a haughty duke who manages to be a sweetheart and clueless in love and you have one heck of a romance ***Slight Spoiler*** I usually don’t include favorite parts of the book, but this scene is hilarious and encapsulates the book. A haughty nobleman who has loved this woman forever and a brilliant Lady who, despite her outwardly perfection, has secret hopes even she doesn’t realize, are inexplicably connected to each other.
In this scene, Malcolm asks Selina to waltz at an informal party. Selina only knows how to lead, having instructed her younger siblings in the art of dancing. “I’ll make a fool of myself,” she hissed, but he was not deterred. “And if you do? Better here than a crowded ballroom. This won’t be the last time I dance with you.” They stumbled again, but he was prepared this time, and he righted her quickly. “You almost have it.” “I don’t.” “Well, you will have it once you stop trying to lead.” She glared. “Following is not in my nature.” Malcolm chuckled, softly.
Loved it!

my personal markers for a great read...1. smart and engaging writing, 2. Humorous, 3. sexy interactions and 4. stories with family/friends.
This book was good, worth reading in a few days. It hit pretty much most of my personal markers for a good read and well roundness of the book; it just lacked ‘something’ for 5 stars: In this case, I like more ‘ intimate scenes’...this book is totally PG rating.
The development and interest in main characters and secondary characters was totally enjoyable. It kept me wanting to know and read more. The H/H were well paired and I loved their story.
I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.
I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series). Writing in of past family characters throughout the book.
I’m looking forward to reading the series (even though it’s a PG book and not usually my preferred writing). That’s how much I enjoyed these characters, very well written.
The humorous moments, The give and take dialogue was wonderful. Movement of the book flowed for the most part. Book writing/conversation engaging.
Romance was throughout the book in the form of lovely written kissing scenes (no oral or love making scenes in this book). 1/5 hotness and steam...totally PG
recommend author.
Will read the next book by the author and pervious books.
I do believe you should read the books in order of sequence or as a reader you’ll miss the true story telling of the series (brother and sisters).
4.5 Stars Lady Selina Balfour would make the perfect duchess. But the Duke of Caversham is far from her idea of the perfect husband. Malcolm Locke is everything Selina hates about powerful men – reckless, arrogant, and all too aware of his own chiselled jaw. Everyone knows that Malcolm is in dire need of a respectable duchess, an heir, and an end to his rivalry with Selina. This is the fourth book in the series & whilst it could easily be read on its own the Balfours are thoroughly delightful as is the whole series. I loved Malcolm who was in love with Selina from the start but Selina had been heart broken years before when her fiancé died & she vowed never to feel that pain again. Selina is the eldest sister & is used to aiding her brother in the management of his homes & more, I loved how strong & humble she was. The verbal bantering between the pair is a joy & added to my enjoyment. They lock horns over a parliamentary election when they champion opposing candidates this throws them together & sparks fly. I’ve loved Aunt Ursula throughout the series, I look forward to Isobel’s story My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I loved this sweet story! I thought the storyline and characters were wonderful full of emotion, drama, forgiveness and humility. They looked beyond their imperfections and found the real person along with true love. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Those Balfours! This time Selina Balfour, who has been there for her siblings and she is almost into spinsterhood! Malcolm Locke has had a tendre for Selina and wants to marry her. But he and her family end up on different sides of the political arena and it seems that there sparring reaches new levels!
But as the journey continues, these two find they may be on opposite sides but the sizzling attraction wants to win out!
I think this is the first book I've ever read by this author; it's definitely the only book I've read in this series. It came up as recommended in my KU so I decided to check it out. I always enjoy a good enemies-to-lovers storyline, particularly when the topics of contention have some substance and the MC's are smart and interesting, with a bit of edge, without being abrasive. This is the case here. I loved the way the MFC is take-charge and stands up for her beliefs in the barrister she's supporting politically, even though the MMC, who has money and a title, is behind the man running against him. The MC's are both strong-willed and charismatic, the banter between them is crackling, and the writing is witty and polished. I enjoyed how they gradually broke down each other's facades, the fears and doubts keeping them from happiness and love. The rescued carriage dog, Percy, is a sweet touch.
I read a review that graded this down because the backdrop is politics. It's in the blurb, people. If you're that extremely knee-jerk about Whigs/Tories/Conservative/Liberal, just skip the book. But also know that this book isn't preachy or polemic at all. The issue of fair voting is a topic, not parties.
My only reasons for the missing star: first, the MMC's quick character arc. A little more needed to happen between the MFC's rejection and his decision to contest the election to completely convince me that they were aligned philosophically. Second, this book has all closed-door passion except a couple tame kissing scenes. I'm OK with "sweet and clean", but felt that the blurb hinted at around a 2-star level of steam which never occurs. I mean, why have a scene at the end with the MFC being encouraged to visit the MMC in his room, where he's bathing, if you're not going to introduce some steam? He's standing there in front of her half-dressed, musculature is described, but nothing much happens.
Gah! Don't tease me like that!
Bottom line: this is a delightful read with one of the better enemies-to-lovers plots I've read recently. Just don't expect any level of spice.
I liked this one more than the others in this series, even if (pardon the pun) it did take me most of the book to warm up to Selina aka Lady Icicle. At times, I even felt bad for Malcom wondering why he would continue to approach her when she was decidedly rude to any member of the male species not related to her.
Don't get me wrong, it was quite enjoyable watching him seem to slowly win her over. However, it was also equally annoying watching her turn on him when he told her he would handle things. Instead of trusting his word that he would, she cut him off from her life - again - and all but accused him of lying to her. Once again, she reverted back to Lady Icicle - acting as though everything they had shared meant nothing to her. Even when he came to her, hat in hand to try and explain, she brushed him off. Not very endearing if you ask me.
Despite that, one of the things that made this book stand out from the others for me is the sub-plot of a political race taking place in which both the main characters are backing different candidates. Admittedly, I wouldn't have thought women would be allowed to be involved in politics to the extent Selina was, but it gave the reader a chance to see a side of her that we hadn't gotten to see in the prior books.
It would seem there is to be a fifth book, based around the only remaining unwed sister (Isobel), and I can't wait to see what the future holds for her (although I have plans to check out more from this author's other works as well).
I am reviewing this book after receiving an advanced, free copy. I liked the book and I genuinely enjoy reading works by this author. This was the fourth in a series focusing on five siblings. Thus far this has proved my least favorite. Personally, I never warmed up to the heroine of the story and felt more sympathy for the hero than the heroine. She came across as very cold and unbending toward the male gender in all the other books. I'm trying not to include any spoilers for those who have yet to begin the series, but a lost love in her past is the reason behind her cold demeanor. I also had a little trouble getting into the book because of the emphasis on politics of the time. I detest politics so that again is a personal bias. Primarily, I gave it 3.5 stars because the ending felt rushed. The heroine made (at least it seemed so to me) a sudden emotional 180-degree turnabout to achieve the HEA, but she never had that "aha" moment of epiphany that I expected her to have. All of this said, please don't let me turn you off this book. It was a good read. The author writes well and the book is happily free of the multitude of typos that I have found in many ebooks of late. It is also a sweet read without any vulgarity or overt sexuality that has become common-place. I just wish the relationship development had been fleshed out a little more between the hero and heroine.

Lady Selina Balfour is determined to remain single throughout the remainder of her life. She has loved and lost a man to death when she was younger and never will put herself in a position to get involved with a man again. Malcolm Locke, the Duke of Caversham is determined to wed Selina even after he has proposed many times and been rejected by her. Both Selina and Malcolm have become involved in an election. Both of them are backing opposing candidate. The battle has begun.....especially after a conversation overheard in a secret passage way indicating the Malcolm was buying votes for his candidate. There is underlying chemistry between Malcolm and Selina but will he ever be able to present his real personality to her or will his arrogance and hunger for power keep them apart. Well fleshed, multifaceted main characters with interesting backstories. Will they be able to put the past behind them? An interesting array of secondary characters that are well defined plus a fur baby named Percival to add to the story. Mix helpful siblings, a quirky aunt, bribery, elections, fear of rain with deep attraction for a good read. This is book # 4 in the Impossible Balfours series. It can be read as a stand alone. I volunteered to read No Duke Need Apply. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. My opinion is my own.
I love a character-driven tale that is well written and has interesting characters. Which is why (for the most part) I really liked No Dukes Need Apply by Gemma Blackwood. It hit most of my must haves in a period romance.
Lady Selina Balfour is well on her way to spinsterhood, and that is just what she wants. Or is it? Regardless, she is at peace with her life, as long as the Duke of Caversham stays away. He seems to be the one person who disrupts her calm.
Malcolm Locke, the ninth Duke of Caversham really enjoys needling Lady Selina, but he just can't understand why his charm does not seem to thaw her icy facade. She would certainly make a perfect duchess, if only she didn't hate him so.
Although this story is not quite an enemies to lovers tale, it does have that feel about it. I liked both of the leading personalities, as well as the supporting characters. The pace was a bit slow at times, which was probably due to the excessive internal dialogues of both the hero and heroine. However, I did enjoy their banter and the sprinkling of dry humor. I also loved the ending and the very sweet epilogue.
Content 411: Other than three very mild swear words and some non-detailed kissing, this book is very clean.
I received a copy from BookSprout; this is my honest review. -I loved the chemistry between Malcolm and Selina; there’s a fine line between hate and love and sometimes they’re mixed-up together, such as in this case. -I’m glad they both came to their senses and see what’s really important and act on it. -Not to be outdone, Malcom did ask Selina several times to marry him in the past, and absorbed the refusal with his head held high, with the exception of the last few times – those in the book. More is at stake this time; he’s in love. -I’m glad Selina spoke about her and Jeffrey; it’s only fair that Malcolm knows the truth. -I liked all the scenes with the election, the friend, the lawyer and his wife, Lord Louis, etc. -I’m glad Selina and Malcom both found peace in their heart at last. He doesn’t need to prove anything to his late father and she found love again. -LOL: Spring melts icicles, even Lady Icicle. -I think this on was the best of all the other ones in the series. I really enjoyed it.
No dukes need apply. Except the right one. For years Malcolm Locke the Duke of Caversham, and Selena Balfour have been trading wits and barbs. She thinks he is conceited, entitled, and power hungry. He has also asked to court her for year and she always turns him down. Now when each has put forth and are backing a different candidate for the election in their borough. Malcolm wants his man in so he can gain power in parliament. But Selena’s candidate is smart and cares about the people in his district and is the best candidate. Now, pitted against each other, Malcolm ups his assault thinking if she agrees to marry him he will gain the upper hand in the election. But Selena is smart and confident. She starts to see a different side to Malcolm and just when she might be on the verge of accepting his proposal of marriage, she finds out that he might be dishonest and not the man she was growing to like. I've read each book in this series and they've all been quite good. In book four of The Impossible Balfours series, Selina is the focus of this story.
The eldest of the Balfours, Selina has taken care of her siblings since the death of their parents. Selina is content to bask in the joy that she receives just from helping her siblings. Or is she? Malcolm Locke isn't so certain.
Malcolm sets himself a quest to make Selina his duchess. Selina has all that he is looking for in a duchess. She is graceful, poised, well liked and beautiful just to name a few. But Selina isn't inclined to become Malcolm's duchess. Selina isn't inclined to become any man's wife.
But as Selina get to knows Malcolm better, she realizes he isn't quite the man he pretends to be. Malcolm realizes Selina is everything he thought she was and more and yearns for her light in his life. But can he convince Selina to give him a chance to make her happy?

The Balfours are back with the fourth book in this steamy historical romance series. This time it is almost-a-spinster, Selina Balfour, that is thrown headlong into a romance she never saw coming.
Malcolm Locke, the Duke of Caversham, has been a political and personal rival of the Balfour family for years. Yet, he can’t stop proposing to the woman he believes is his perfect duchess, Selina. When Selena and Malcolm end up on opposite sides of an important election, their arguments and passions set fire to their opposing worlds.
As the election gets closer, Blackwood creates deeply emotional and fantastically romantic situations for our couple to further their complete connection. In the beginning, I wondered how the two would ever get together. Blackwood develops a love so true, my happy tears flowed by the end of the book.
More Balfours means more books. Keep them coming Gemma! I’ll be waiting for another tremendous love story.

Lady Selina Balfour is the oldest sister of the Balfour family. She is very strong and independent. Malcolm Locke is the Duke of Caversham who has long appreciated Selina’s skills and thinks she would be the perfect Duchess for him. Unfortunately, Selina is sure she does not like him and his arrogant ways.
The two of them are on opposing sides in endorsing their candidates, so the two go head to head in the battle to get their candidate elected. But Malcolm not only wants his candidate to win the election, but he wants to win Selina’s heart as well! Despite her constantly pushing him away, he adamantly keeps coming back. Will his persistence finally win her heart? Or will both have to walk away and miss the HEA that is waiting for them.
This is a very enjoyable book with a great story line. With both characters being so stubborn, it’s a toss-up as to which one may give in or give up first! Grab your copy and see if anything can weaken their resolve!
Selina is a strong lady who has dealt with many losses and is determined to remain unwed like her aunt. I think she feels guilty for her fiance's death and fears falling for someone else and losing them too. The Duke of Caversham is determined to have her because she keeps telling him no. He doesn't like losing and sees her as the perfect hostess and political asset for him. He is arrogant in his courtship of her and it was very funny to watch their sparing. I laughed, smiled, and shook my head at their courtship. He keeps thinking that she wants the same things as him. But she just wants to help a politician she believes in without resorting to corruption and be happy. Malcolm does change his ways and becomes quite the romantic swoon worthy hero. I loved his sweet rescue dog Percy, who he saved from being put down after his leg was broken by a carriage. Like his master he just need to be loved.
A Contented Spinster? Selina is determined that she will never wed and will become a contented spinster because no man could possibly love her nor she love him the way she loved her deceased love of her life. That is, until she becomes aware of the feelings Malcolm is bringing to the surface of her consciousness, but she tries to push him away and the man is impossible, for the more she pushes, the more he pulls at her. This fabulous story went by so quickly. It was really very interesting with lovely characters who complimented each other, each playing their part. I really did enjoy this episode in the lives of the Impossible Balfours and look forward to he next. This one was certainly worth reading. I read an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) and my review above is unbiased and given voluntarily.
This was such a delightful story, with two very strong and confident power houses going head to head. Selina Balfour is the sister of a Duke and Malcolm Locke is the Duke of Caversham. They are on opposing sides endorsing candidates in the Twynham borough election. Selina is set on being a self sufficient spinster, organized and independent and she can’t stand the Duke of Caversham. She believes him to be over confident, arrogant, and outspoken, but he adores her, and wants her to be his Duchess. I must say that he was persistent in his pursuit of her. She slammed him down over and over again and he kept coming back. Their banter was charming and enjoyable. It was a great storyline with wonderful characters!

I love the fact that our Duke is quite in love with the Heroine, but totally clueless about it - self-reflection is not his strong suit. Selina, accustomed to taking charge of her siblings, doesn't have a lot of time to ponder personal growth, either, so their head-to-head combat, so to speak, from beginning to end, is unsurprising.
There's a hotly-contested election leading to disappointment and betrayal, Selina's siblings, whose loyalty, support and at times questionable assistance make the situation challenging at best, and there is plenty of mayhem to go around. I laughed, I cried, I loved both of them before the end.
This is the fourth book in The Impossible Balfours series and can be read as a stand-alone, although the first three are definitely worth the read.

It would take more than determination to win Selina's hand! by sewsummore
Malcolm, the Duke of Caversham, had longed to make Lady Selina his wife, but she continually foiled his advances, intent on becoming a spinster and enjoying the freedom that would come with it. Selina had been in love before, but the object of her affections had died. She felt that the pain of losing a loved one was something she never wanted to feel again. Despite her rejection, Malcolm never intended to give up his determination to win Selina. I enjoyed this historical romance and Selina's intention to live life her way. The Duke had a lot to learn about what was important to Selina before he could hope to win her favor. It was when he had lost her that he realized what he had to do to win her forever.

Gemma Blackwood is a talented author who’s written a charmingly delightful tale of enemies to lovers, Malcolm, The Duke of Caversham and Lady Selina. I was captivated by this sweet romance story.
I characters we’re delightful in their ways. Selena was strong and capable but quite stubborn. When Malcolm, our swoon worthy hero made up his mind that Selina was a woman for him, nothing was going to do until she became his Duchess. The supporting characters were interesting and Louis and Aunt Ursula were a riot and Malcolm’s conversations with the dog were a bonus.
The dialogue was witty and fun. I enjoyed the sparring and interaction between the couple. It’s different and interesting. All in all it was a wonderful story that’s sure to entertain you.
Thank you so much Gemma for such a wonderful story of romance and falling in love.
No Dukes Need Apply is a very entertaining historical romance with believable, well-developed characters. It is definitely one of the best historical romances I have read recently. Selina and Malcolm had a superficial relationship for many years but never scratched below the surface. When they finally did become better acquainted, they found that not only were they both very capable leaders, but they had more in common than they ever realized. Both had social personas that hid their flaws and insecurities from public dissection. Not only is the book entertaining, but there is a good message that true love requires taking risks, revealing not only hopes and dreams, but also sharing one’s past, warts and all.

This is the 4th book in the series The Impossible Balfours – It is a stand-alone book, but the rest of the series was very nice I would read them all. This is a clean romance by Gemma Blackwood and a nice read. I always enjoy Gemma Blackwood’s books, and this is no exception. This book is about Selina who is the oldest sister in the Balfour family and Malcolm who is a Duke who always admired Selina and her skills as a hostess, he thought she would make a wonderful Duchess. Selina really did not like him; he was known as the “His Gorgeous Grace”. The only thing I would change about this book is I would want more love and romance. ***SPOILERS*** While with any romance novel you have to suspend belief to some extent, this was a very entertaining read. I liked that it was clean, too. Some kisses, but no sex. I was pretty surprised at a part when a character encouraged one of her sisters to visit a man alone in his room who was only half-dressed, it would have been pretty shocking (as well as pretty imprudent) at the time, but so far as I could tell it was just a lot of cuddling and some kisses that resulted. I liked both characters and how they turned out at the end, and how the male hero didn't treat the heroine like dirt and then suddenly fall in love with her.

A very welcome story with a strong heroine and a refreshingly imperfect hero. It was easy to relate to them as real people with real issues and desires who are trying to make the best of their worlds. Even though you know that everything will work out in the end, there is enough tension to make that journey interesting with some twists and turns to ensure you keep reading long past bedtime. And a special shout out for Percy, my favorite character by far. Well done!!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. As I love this author's work, I would have purchased it anyway.
Another wonderful book. Selina always took care of her bother and sisters. She arraigned balls, diners without getting the credit. She did not dance but always stayed to the back to watch everyone else. She has seen her brother and sisters find love. She decided long ago she will not marry. Malcolm, The Duke of Caversham has wanted Selina for several years buts it’s always been a no. No to everything he asks. When they become rivals with there own candidates for the House of Commons, one will play dirty to win. As Selina looks deeper into Malcolm there might be more to him. A wonderful read where they both find their happily ever after!
Both Selina and Malcolm are too wrapped up in the past. She is afraid of being hurt again. He continually compares himself to his late father, who was always cold to him. I’ve enjoyed this entire series but I thought there was a little too much reflection and not quite enough action in this book. I enjoyed the dog and the way the family members managed to engineer situations that forced them to spend time together. Can they tear down the walls and see each other for who they truly are?

I enjoyed this romance story with Lady Selina Balfour and Lord Malcolm Locke is the Duke of Caversham.
Lady Selina Balfour is strong and independent. She is the oldest sister of the Balfour family. She doesn't want to marry anyone. Because after losing her sweetheart to death at a young age she has refused all offers.
Lord Malcolm Locke is the Duke of Caversham. He has wanted Lady Selina to marry for years but she been coldly refusing every time he has asked.
This story was fun to read to see if Lord Malcolm could get his Duchess. It was funny at times to.
I received a complimentary copy via Booksprout. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
