Dark secrets lurk on this seemingly unremarkable street in the northern English town of Broadfield. From her bedroom window, seven-year-old Valerie observes the furtive nocturnal activities of the man next door. What’s in the bloodstained bag? What – or who? – is buried in Mr Oliver’s garden? As Valerie pursues her investigations, she discovers that Mr Oliver’s not the only one with something to hide.
The Close by Alison Knight. The reader is drawn into the private lives of each character through detailed characterisation, observations from behind curtains and by noises heard between the flimsy party walls of the houses in the Close. In spite of this information the story holds many secrets. Interest is piqued by surprising twists and turns and while a number of puzzles are resolved the reader is left wondering about one. Alison is a skilled story teller. A very enjoyable read.
