Dreamwalker #3

Doggone It

Rate this book
Dreamwalker Baxley Powell can't remember the last time she had such a crappy weekend. A twilight encounter with a ghost dog left her numb and disoriented, her dreamwalker abilities are fried, and the sheriff just summoned her to a double homicide. With no access to the spirit world, Baxley bluffs her way through the crime scene where a movie star’s assistant and a charter boat captain were strung up and bled dry. In a haunted house, no less. Figuring out who killed these people will be a real challenge without her ability to speak to the dead. Just when Baxley thinks her powers are returning, her dreamwalks malfunction. With the sheriff pushing her to solve the case quickly, Baxley teams up with a dognapping medium to boost her powers. Suspects include the captain’s good-for-nothing brother, the assistant's replacement, and, of course, his stalker. All of Sinclair County is on edge, and the media circus isn’t helping. At stake are the movie’s funding, the sheriff’s job, and Baxley’s senses. Can Baxley safeguard her abilities and solve the case before the killer strikes again?

My favorite cozy mysteries these days are the ones that evolve with the complexity of our times, and Maggie Toussaint's tightly plotted "Doggone It" exemplifies this. For those who love both animal and paranormal cozies, "Doggone It" is a blend of both. The animals are actively engaged in the action, and have deep, knowing relationships with humans. Meanwhile, Baxley’s dreamwalking abilities are expanding, allowing her character to grow, and presenting her with new and dangerous challenges that imbue the book with an urban fantasy sensibility, ramping up the tension and pacing. What she encounters on both sides of the veil also brings an element of horror to the story…very thrilling!

And, much like in real life, while Baxley has to engage with the dangers of the supernatural world and murderous human world, she still juggles the daily demands of motherhood, friendship, and her regular day job (plants & pets). Toussaint never reduces Baxley’s struggles to clichés with simple answers. Instead, she allows Baxley her intelligence. She has to actively find solutions in constantly shifting situations, and she learns how to accept help…never forgetting that life is a team effort. It is the grasp of the ever-changing nature of life that I most appreciate most, as one of the few things that seem to be constant in today's world is change.

My one complaint is that I would have liked to have understood the motivation of the murderer a bit more. There were certain elements (on the human side) that relied on good versus evil thinking. This is more common in horror, but real life is more grey area. I was also hoping to learn more about the Watcher, but I’m looking forward to the next book for a (hopefully!) full reveal.

Maggie Toussaint has done it again with her next in the Dreamwalkers Series. As a psychic consultant to the police department in coastal Georgia, Baxley Powell helps solve crime. She also struggles with raising her young daughter and the family responsibilities that go with sharing her with her missing husband's overbearing family. While a movie crew comes to town, one of the crew and a local are brutally murdered in a ritualistic ceremony, and Baxley is on the job to help solve the crime. While in a dreamwalk to talk to the victims, she trades favors with a demon to get back to the real world - the evil around these murders threatens to hold Bax on the wrong side of the veil between life and death.

I love the mysticism and the personal struggles Bax faces and the overwhelming sense of family that keeps Bax not only grounded, but protects her from the ultimate battles of good versus evil. I kept waiting for her demon helper to call in her marker, and I'm intrigued by the watcher in the woods, both of which I eagerly anticipate being outed in her next book(s) in this series.

This is the first in the series that I have read and now I want to read more! I wish I had read the previous books but I was still able to follow and enjoy the story.
This was a great book and I really enjoyed the concept of a dream walker solving the mystery.
Intriguing characters and a great whodunit that kept me guessing.
I enjoyed this book and recommend it. I received a copy from the author for a fair and honest review.

Baxley Powell whose trying to make a living using her dreamwalker powers by helping Sheriff Wayne Thompson solve murders in there small town, there's also Charlotte Ambroise who's Baxley's best friend and a reporter for the Marion Observer in Sinclair County. In Doggone It we also meet Ford Morrison an actor and his right-hand man Marv Kildeer, Boat Captain Belinda “Bee” and Cassie Korda.

During a trip to June's Folly Baxley and Charlotte notices holes in the yard and the door opened, two bodies are discovered hanging upside down and drained of all there blood could this be the work of a ritualistic killers or just a some teens looking for pirates gold. As Baxley traipse the world of the living and dead its seems that these murders are not as they seem. Will Baxley be able to solve the crime and keep her sanity or will this latest case finally kill her.

Doggone It is the third book in Maggie Toussaints Dreamwalker Mystery's, Ms. Toussaints is a former scientist for the US Army and freelance reporter who it seems has a knack for writing superb mystery's I really enjoyed getting to know Baxley and the motley crew that made up her friends and family and finding out who killed Marv and Bee. I liked when Baxley met Stinger and they had an instant connection (page 137) Baxley was so giddy with power after helping Stinger and Stinger helping her that she excused his odd behavior. After reading Doggone It I would recommend this book to tweens and teens and anyone who liked mysteries.

An enjoyable and intriguing read! Baxley Powell has a unique gift, where she talks to the dead in her dreams. She also has other gifts, that come in handy as a paranormal police consultant. Those gifts sometimes cause complications, requiring a call to her guardian, by the name of Rose. When Rose is called, Baxley must give something in return.

Baxley, for moral support, goes with her best friend, Charlotte, to June's Folly, a place that is deadly for dreamwalkers and known to be haunted. Charlotte, a journalist, writing about ghost stories, asks for Baxley to reach out to speak to the dead. Baxley was pulled, into an inbetween place where she could hear Charlotte frantically trying to reach her, and the sense of something else. Unable to pull herself out of this void, she asks for Rose's help. The something, that was so terrifying, turns out to be a ghost dog, named Oliver. Making friends with Oliver is to Baxley's benefit.

Later, Baxley has a dream about two people, who are involved. The sheriff calls Baxley in, about a missing person case, after being shown a picture, Baxley realizes that the missing man, Marv Kildeer, is the same one from her previous night's dream. A visit to the room where Marv was staying, the sheriff holds up a pair of Marv's pants and asks Baxley to touch them. Things don't go as they should, and Baxley soon learns that she's pulled another along for the ride into the dreamscape. Something she's never done before, and weakens her abilities. With some help, Baxley manages to pull herself and her passenger out of the dreamscape. It's taken a toll on her and her abilities.

When she gets a call from the sheriff about a double homicide, Baxley has nothing to go on, but faking her way through the scene. If it's not bad enough, that her abilities have disappeared, a late night visitor stole her daughter's dog, in-laws testing her patience, a missing husband, conflict of interest with Charlotte that puts a strain on their friendship, and a watcher. Baxley has a lot on her plate besides helping solve a case.

I'm curious to learn more about who Baxley's watcher is. This person, comes across as a protector, but an unknown one. Also, wondering how Rose will collect on what is owed to her.

Dreamwalker Baxley Powell has her work cut out for her at the spooky estate that’s serving as a film set. She has an unexpected encounter there with a ghost dog, but he’s not the only spirit hanging around. Two naked dead bodies are on exhibit as though waiting for Baxley to discover them. The man and woman have been brutally murdered. Was someone from the film’s crew involved in this ghastly crime? Or could it be one of their own town’s people who’d encouraged the outsiders to come? Ghost dogs, satanic rituals, a bizarre murder, and a film crew lead psychic investigator Baxley on a merry chase. It doesn’t help that she’s distracted by a potential custody battle over her daughter or by a mysterious watcher in the woods near her home. Dark forces have her in their sights, and she must use all her resources to keep her friends and family safe. Doggone It is a gripping, fast-paced tale that will have you anxious for Baxley’s well-being and eager for the sequel.

The" Dreamwalker" books never disappoint. Each book is a definite stand alone story while at the same time layering on a little bit more about each character.
This is a solid murder mystery with twists and turns, ghosts, spirits, demons and a lovable ghost dog.
While this is a very interesting story and an entertaining read, it also shows us how important real family and friends are, and WHAT is really important in life.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Maggie Toussaint draws you into this story and doesn't let go of you until the very end. A well developed story line with lots of very interesting characters. A hard book to put down. I wanted to finish is in one sitting. This is the first book I have read of the series, I was not lost at all, as the author gives enough background that you can follow easily. I have now purchased the first two and look forward to reading them. The southern setting aids in the paranormal aspect of this book. I like how Baxley's normal life is interwoven with the spirit world effortlessly. I am looking forward to seeing if a relationship develops between Baxley and the sheriff and the watcher in the woods is very intriguing as well. I really love this book and highly recommend. I received a copy from the author for a fair and honest review. All thoughts are my own.

A delightful paranormal mystery

Baxley Powell is a Dreamwalker. She visits the world of spirit, communing with the dead in order to help them. Working as a consultant with the local sheriff's department, Baxley uses her talents to get to the bottom of murders and bring the killers to justice.

It's a scary job, but she does not work alone. Her parents, her talented daughter, and her friends are with her, as well as a very scary but mostly benevolent (or is she?) spirit named Rose.

In Doggone It, she has also managed to join with an elderly medium named Stinger, a Chihuahua with therapy dog talents, and Oliver. Oliver is a large and formidable ghost dog who comes to Baxley's aid in the nick of time.

When a local woman and a member of a visiting film crew are brutally murdered, Baxley has to once again enter the spirit world in order to bring them justice. However, things don't go as planned. Although, how does one actually plan something like that? There are always surprises waiting on the other side.

The author takes her protagonist through new dangers at every turn, including the ultimate threat... Will Baxley's unconventional profession lose her custody of her daughter?

This is a wonderfully entertaining and intriguing story that lets the reader open up their belief system to some pretty phenomenal possibilities.

The books in the Dreamwalker series are wonderful standalone mysteries. Though it's not necessary to read the books in order, this being the third, doing so will triple the enjoyment.

I look forward to the next Dreamwalker adventure.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review.
A debt to a demon, murder times two, a mystery man lurking in the shadows…’Doggone It’ grabs your attention and refuses to let go. As the tension heightens and the plot deepens, it is Baxley Powell, Dreamwalker, and a team she has cobbled together, that pull all of their combines powers to ferret out the secrets of the dead as well as the mysteries of the living.
Baxley’s problems are growing exponentially. And it isn’t only the dead that are causing them. This time the living, in the form of her In-Laws, are causing their share. The elder Powell’s are determined to get custody of Baxley’s daughter, Larissa. This is a fight Baxley refuses to lose.
With each new book in the Dreamwalker series, the plots get more developed and the reader gets a chance to learn more about the supporting characters in the story. And along the way, Baxley is collecting an entourage of pets, that help to add an element of ‘normal’ to her otherwise chaotic life.
There is a fight between Good and Evil being waged. Nothing is as it seems.
This series will capture the reader’s attention and leave them wanting more.

What’s a dreamwalker, who’s seemingly lost her powers, to do when faced with two grisly homicides and pressure to solve them? Bailey faces one frustrating and dangerous roadblock after another.

Will Rose help? How does the appearance of a ghost dog play into the mystery. Bailey has enough trouble keeping her earthly pets in line. Adding to her problems, her husband, Roland, is missing and her in-laws are trying to steal her daughter. Will the murders be solved in a timely manner to satisfy the sheriff and keep the townspeople from full-on panic?

Maggie Toussaint expertly weaves a storyline from one world to the next, keeping readers on their toes as the protagonist fears she’ll be trapped in her dreams. Fascinating characters, excellent writing, and a thrilling supernatural mystery makes Doggone It a must read.

This is the first book I’ve read in the series, but it won’t be the last. Highly recommended.

Doggone It is the third book in A Dreamwalker Mystery series. It is definitely not a stand-alone novel as I discovered. I have not had the opportunity to read the first two books, I was completely lost in the beginning. Things made a little more sense as I ventured further into the novel, but I wish the author had explained more. I will post my complete review soon!

This series continues to captivate me. It's one of those "I'll just read a little more..." books.
Fascinating premise. Good characterizations. Love her family.
Who (what?) is the watcher?
What is Rose?! And what does she mean for Baxley?
What is she going to do with her continually growing collection of pets, corporeal and not.?
And, bottom line, who and what IS Baxley?

This was a confusing read to me – I had never heard of a Dreamwalker Mystery and having finished the book not sure I still have any idea as to what it is. But the main character who is a Dreamwalker didn't seem to know what it was either! This is not a first in the series so maybe if I had read the first one, it would have made more sense. I found it to be a chore to wade through the book (ending was good) It was interesting, not very believable and not my cup of tea!

Doggone It by Maggie Toussaint is amazing, y'all. Let me tell you a little about it.

Doggone It is the third book in the Dreamwalker Mystery series starring Baxley Powell, following Book #1 Gone and Done It (reviewed here) and Book #2 Bubba Done It (reviewed here). The books really should be read in order, so that you will understand such things as Baxley's back-story, her history as a Dreamwalker, and even what a Dreamwalker is.

Baxley's supporting cast from the previous books return in Doggone It, and new characters are introduced, including two dogs, large and small, and a medium. Two sub-plots, concerning Baxley's mother and her daughter Larissa, are compelling.

Even more compelling is the main plot. Wow! Author Maggie Toussaint's words grabbed me at the beginning of Doggone It, and didn't let me go until I read the very last word (which is "time," by the way). I read Doggone It in one sitting, because I couldn't put it down. It's just that good! I cannot wait for Book Four, to learn what is next in store for Baxley.

When I read about Baxley in Doggone It, I'm reminded of sleuths from two of my other favorite paranormal series.
• Like Stacy Justice in Barbra Annino's series, Baxley was reluctant at first to embrace her paranormal abilities.
• Like Charley Davidson in Darynda Jones' series, Baxley must keep her extra senses shielded to prevent a sensory overload, except when her powers are needed.
If you are fans of Barbra Annino's Stacy Justice series or Darynda Jones' Charley Davidson series, I think you will really enjoy reading about Baxley Powell in Doggone It, and the other books in Maggie Toussaint's Dreamwalker series.

I absolutely love Doggone It, and recommend it to fans of paranormal mysteries everywhere! Doggone It has earned our highest rating of Five Stars.

Note: I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of Doggone It. All opinions shared are 100% my own.

Dreamwalker Baxley Powell is not having a good day. A surprise brush with a ghost dog has left her disoriented, and her dreamwalking skills go on the fritz just after the sheriff calls her to a particularly gruesome double homicide involving some folks connected to the filming of a reality TV show. She may be forced to rely on her keen practical skills if the dreamwalking abilities don’t return. As if she didn’t have enough on her plate, the national media is running amok, her snooty, mean-spirited mother-in-law is actively trying to gain custody of Baxley’s daughter, and her unpleasant guardian “angel” is back looking to collect on a favor.

This is the third entry in the Dreamwalker Series. I am enjoying watching Baxley grow in her dreamwalking skills. In this one, she picks up a sidekick who’s a medium. His skills complement hers, and she helps him deal with the “voices” in his head. I also like that the sheriff, who’s kind of a pig (no pun intended) is finally showing Baxley some respect. The relationship between Baxley and her daughter, Larissa, is one I wish I would have had with my own mother. Baxley protects her, and supports her, even if it means pain for Baxley.

I’m generally not a fan of paranormal mysteries, although my fondness for them is growing. This series is one of the reasons why. As a dreamwalker, Baxley “seeks justice for the dead and solace for the living.” I’d like to do that myself. And even though some of the woo-woo scenes are a little far-fetched, the author’s descriptive skills still make me feel like I’m right there with Baxley, wandering through the fog, trying to find my way home. The paranormal elements give the series spice and purpose, but it’s the writing, the dialogue, and the relationships between the characters that keep bringing me back.

In the interests of full-disclosure, I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the author with the understanding I do an honest review. I like this series enough that before I got the offer, I was planning book 3 anyway.

This third installment about dreamwalker Baxley Powell finds her working through the unexpected and unexplained loss of her dreamwalker abilities, a double homicide and issues with her in-laws in regards to her daughter Larissa. Baxley is able to speak to the dead, those that have already crossed over, during her dreams. Baxley’s husband is still missing and both she and Larissa feel that that they would know if he was dead (Larissa has inherited some of Baxley’s abilities and hopes to be a dreamwalker someday). Larissa goes, unhappily, to visit her grandparents for a week which gives Baxley time to deal with the double homicide (working with the sheriff as a police consultant) while trying to restore her dreamwalker abilities. The action in this series is non-stop, yet easy to follow. The characters are very likeable (except for the in-laws - lol) and have continued to develop throughout the books. The paranormal edge is fascinating, yet not overwhelming. I believe you could start with this third book, but you would appreciate the story more if you began with the first book – “Gone and Done It”. I have truly enjoyed all of Ms. Toussaint’s books including her “Cleopatra Jones” mysteries (FYI: if you have not read these, they are definitely worth the read!). I am definitely looking forward to book #4 in this series!! “I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review”. (by paytonpuppy)

Baxley's life is complicated. She's a dreamwalker who works as a part time police consultant. She talks with the dead who have crossed over and with the information they give her finds the truth. Her husband is missing after a special military operation and she doesn't know if he's alive or dead. Now she's a single parent fighting to keep her daughter. Her In-Laws want Larissa. Can she keep custody when they have so much money? When a brutal murder strikes fear in the community, can Baxley and Sheriff Wayne Thompson bring the killer or killers to justice? Sinclair County has plenty of spirits as well as deadly secrets. I was pulled in from the first page. Baxley is a strong woman with a loving family. I was impressed how she won't be stopped by circumstances. She's amazing. You'll always find her in the center of the action. She and the Sheriff work well together even as the butt heads, but he has her back. These characters are quirky and likable. I cared what happened to them. The setting is perfect with its spooky atmosphere and its history. I wonder what happened to her husband, Roland. Is the mysterious watcher a friend or foe? Maggie Toussaint has me on the edge of my seat. Her writing is suspenseful and filled with unexpected twist. I'm looking forward to the next Dreamwalker Mystery. I need answers.

Having enjoyed another book in this series, I was curious to meet these character’s again.

It appears Baxley’s dreamwalker abilities will be in short supply. A run in with a ghost dog has left her high and dry in that department. Bad timing as she needs them to solve the grisly deaths of two people.

She does her best in the investigation, not letting the sheriff know she’s relying on good old fashioned smarts. She also draws on the help of an old nemesis from the other side.. Someone who always asks a high price for her help.

The race is on to solve the murders before more bodies start piling up.

This was a great next story in the series. Baxley is such a genuine character. She’s strong, doesn’t whine, and just gets things done. All while also running her own business and dealing with some other minor cases. For, instance, the dognapping.

I love how the critters, real and ghostly, have key roles in this book. Nothing like fur flying to make it more entertaining.

Another fun whodunit you won’t want to miss.

I should mention that you can read this without having read the other books. But, I’d recommend you start at the beginning to get the skinny on how it all begins. Why miss out on all the fun.

This book is amazeballs! There are just not enough stars offered, because I’d give it way more than five. From the very first line I was sucked into this story, and it didn’t let me go until end. Even then, I wanted nothing more than to linger in the story-after-glow. It’s been a long time since I’ve been so captivated by a book that I couldn’t put it down. Even my husband realized there was something special happening to me. He took charge, moving me from inside the house to the back yard where he’d set up a chair and an overturned bucket for me to rest my feet, just to make sure I was getting fresh air and sunshine. He walked me back inside when evening came, and he even cooked dinner that night!

This is the third book in Ms. Toussaint’s Dreamwalker Mystery series, but it reads as a stand-alone. Not once did I feel lost or as though I had missed something by not reading the first two books. Now I honestly cannot wait to read the first two books in this series!

When a book really, really captures me, I buy the print version. Doggone It will be the newest addition to my shelf. Thank you, Maggie Toussaint!

Haunted houses and dreamwalkers and ghost dogs, oh my!! That's what you'll get with Maggie Toussaint's Doggone It, the 3rd book in the Dreamwalker mystery series!!
In most cases, people would love to inherit the family business. However, in Baxley Powell's case, the family business is dreamwalking and communicating with the dead can get pretty dicey.
After a trip to June's Folly with her reporter friend Charlotte, Baxley can tell this place must be cursed. After a 2nd foray onto the haunted property she ends up losing her abilities as a result an incident with the sheriff and she doesn't know if she'll be able to continue with her job as a police consultant. Since 2 bodies are later found at the house, Baxley really needs to get her powers back or she just might end up roommates with the ghost dog, Oliver!!
This book was fun and spooky, just like the others in the series. If you haven't started with book 1 I'd advise you to do so! A different kind of mystery that will keep you turning the pages as quickly as possible. I am hoping there will be future books in this series.

This is the first book of the Dreamwalker series I have read. I wish I had of read the first 2 books before hand. The first couple of chapters of this book had me a little lost. Once I was more or less introduced to the Characters and their lives I couldn't put the book down. I really got into the characters she brought to the book. This story is a pretty fast paced story with lots of twists and turns. I love how she brought not only humans but animals into the starting rolls of the book. I will be reading the first 2 books soon and cannot wait for the 4th book to come out.

The story is about Baxley Powell. She is a Dreamwalker. She is able to travel to the spirit world and talk to the dead. She also works for the Sheriff. Lending her special abilities to help solve crimes. Her newest case is a double murder. Baxley is just learning what all she and her powers can do, it is kind of like on the job training. The more she learns the more danger she could be in in the spirit world, and on our world as well.

Maggie Toussaint’s spine-tingling paranormal has it all: Scheming in-laws, lost pirate treasure, ghostly apparitions, evil spirits and bloody murder. ...

Who is it Baxley senses watching her from the woods outside her home? Can she fight her in-laws and keep her daughter? Will she owe the demon Rose more than she can repay? These questions and more make for a tightly-knit, not-to-be-missed thrilling paranormal. The addition of a Stinger, a medium whose skill augments Baxley’s talents, added a comical touch and the promise of an investigative partnership with more excitement to come.

Doggone It is a fast-paced mystery, jam-packed with and engrossing plot and enough suspense to keep me glued to the pages. I didn’t want the story to end and definitely look forward to the next release in this outstanding series.

This was my first introduction to Baxley Powell, dreamwalker. But it will not be my last. This was a very enjoyable mystery. I especially liked the paranormal aspects of the story. The characters were interesting and the interaction between Baxley and other characters (good and evil) was well executed and believable. The story begins when Baxley goes with Charlotte to June's Folly, a place deadly to dreamwalkers, to help her with a news story of haunted places. The discovery of two bodies soon has Baxley, who works as a consultant to the police, deeply involved in trying to solve this murder. She navigates between the living and dead characters to find the solution. A great read. I will be looking for the other books in this series.

Book 3 of The Dreamwalker Series.

I frequently read paranormal cozies, but this was my first encounter with a ghost dog! Baxley’s abilities as a dreamwalker were unique, and when they stopped working for her, it added a whole new layer of conflict to the story. The mystery kept me guessing, the characters were entertaining, and the paranormal element was a lot of fun.

Doggone It is book #3 in the Dreamwalker series, but the first one that I read. I had no trouble figuring out what was going on, or who was who, but I wish I would have read the other books just to have seen the characters relationships develop firsthand.

NOTE: I voluntary read and reviewed an advanced copy.

This story centers around Dreamwalker Baxley Powell as a physic consultant for the Police department. I don't usually read paranormal stories but as I read it I was thinking it's more like a good versus evil, a mystery/suspense with murder tossed in to get it rolling! There were animals - human, ghost and furry that kept the story intriguing and had me guessing who dunnit up to the surprise ending.. I enjoyed reading a new author and genre. Thank you to the author for the gifted copy to read and review with my honest opinion..
