"I don't love this job anymore, but should I stay for the pension?" This gut-wrenching question is common for many people working in pensionable careers. But how much is your pension worth? And, is staying worth it?
Since 2017, Grumpus Maximus has researched and written about this critical decision point, which he calls The Golden Albatross. Having served 20 years in the U.S. Military, he too struggled with the same questions, and now he helps others learn from his mistakes.
If your job offers a pension, then this book is a must-read. Easily learn how to calculate your pension's objective value and weigh it against the subjective benefits of leaving for more fulfilling work. When done, you will agree, it was worth it.
A great book for anyone who works in a job that offers a pension. It gets deep into the weeds with some complicated math formulas at times, but if you aren't a math person, never fear--the e-book also contains links to online calculators that do the work of determining your pension's future worth for you. On a related note, a PSA for those on the fence between getting the e-book or a physical copy: get the e-book. It has links that take you directly to additional online resources that supplement the content in the book. I tend to prefer physical books, but in this case the added ease of just being able to click on a link and go straight to the online resource being referenced was invaluable.

This book is so informative if you work in a pensionable career. I had little details about my teacher pension and had a hard time clarifying aspects of it. This book spells out all of the terms of pensions and explains them. I hope that anyone working in a pensionable career will 1) have a plan to save outside of a pension, and 2) read this book. Thanks, Grumpus, for this information. It helped me more than you will ever know.
I thought the book was great and learned a lot about my future pension I now know to examine and research as I approach retirement. If you are approaching burnout and have not vested in your pension this would be the book to read before you make a decision to leave that workplace.
Ok so this was the first book (I think) that I’ve ever read that goes so in to detail on the pension plans - both the good and the bad aspects of them. I am going to need time to digest everything I heard (audio) and to dig into resources and probably read the hard copy though to fully gather all the authors wisdom. Really great perspectives were presented though - some parts were super easy to grasp and other aspects were so weeds that the audio book just didn’t work for me.
Disappointed. The “bonus” chapter sealed the deal for me. I def would not waste my time on this book. Plays the race card in the end to capitalize on current affairs. Stay in your lane bud.
Skip. Plenty of other books which would be far more beneficial to people wondering about the value of their pensions….
A must read for anyone (from whatever country) in a military career that has the promise of a pension. Always learn from other peoples mistakes instead of making your own.
A must-read for future pensioners, whether you love or can’t stand your job alike. GM’s book is concise and breaks down an otherwise dry topic into objective and subjective criteria.
