Breaking Records: 21 Lessons from 21 World Record Attempts

Rate this book
How does someone go from “not smart enough” for the gifted program in elementary school to winning the top electrical engineering lab prize at MIT? Can someone picked last for flag football (because he couldn’t catch the ball) go on to become the world’s fastest juggler - catching more balls in a minute than anyone has ever caught before? How does someone go from looking through the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® book as a child, marveling at all the amazing things others have done, to breaking more than 150 records in less than 5 years? David Rush shares his journey from ordinary to extraordinary, telling stories with real-life lessons from his record attempts and inspiring his audience to dream big and accomplish more than they ever thought possible. The lessons learned along the way can be used by anyone in any field to find more success and turn failures into accomplishments.

Read this having followed David Rush's record breaking exploits for a while now, having discovered him in research for my podcast. Purchased as much to support a man who has provided me with a lot of content as anything, but I actually really enjoyed this book.

It's well set out in short punchy chapters, each providing insight into David's mindset and methodology. It also includes references to further reading backing up the science that supports the "grit" and "growth mindset" concepts that David is a proponent of, which I now want to read. I found the book inspirational in a way a simple self-help book could never be - it tells of a man who has walked the walk and now wants you to follow in his footsteps. The only disappointment is that it doesn't include some of David's more unusual world records - here's hoping for a sequel!
