No More Random Acts of Literacy Coaching

Rate this book
Teacher-coach collaboration is critical to teacher effectiveness and student learning, but sometimes the in-the-moment response rate required when supporting several teacher requests at once can make literacy coaching appear to be, well, rather random. No More Random Acts of Literacy Coaching looks at the common obstacles and misconceptions that can prevent effective coaching, and offers strategies that literacy coaches, teachers, and principals can employ to make wise use of their time together. The authors offer practical steps to create a climate of positive professional learning that When literacy coaching is intentional, carefully planned, and a collaborative team effort with teachers and principals, the results are dramatic. Student literacy growth increases, and the number of students needing intervention decreases. Learn how your team can work together to accelerate student success.

This is a slim, important read for any school leader or literacy coach. It's the work I do and yet it included excellent reminders of methods of communication with principals, shared vision planning with administrations and teachers, cycle planning for professional learning, and ideas for how to prioritize student growth above all.
I just adore Colleen Cruz and Nell Duke, the series editors, and appreciated their takes too, as sandwich bread on both ends of this text. Cruz wrote about excellent coaches in every field exalting those they work with, valuing the craft, and being invaluable themselves. Duke wrote about ongoing learning for teachers the way those in the medical field need access to updated research and learning too.
Truly, "random acts of literacy coaching" do not move the needle in growing readers, writers and thinkers, but are akin to fill in the blank worksheets, and I am grateful to Erin Brown and Susan K. L'allier for naming it.

A great addition to the “Not this, but that” series. The authors lay out the research on literacy coaching along with practical examples of how to apply. This book is a definite must read for literacy leaders and literacy coaches.

There was some great information and practical ideas. But, it felt like I needed more - then again that was not the intention of this book - Short quick read.
