Goodreads Giveaway Win. This book just tried to be too many things: teenage angsty bully revenge, superhero, crime noir, speculative fiction, dystopian. It was a little much.

Jett was a charming character, but the “wokeness” felt forced and insincere. Though I’ll give him credit, for a white adult male writing a biracial, teenage girl, he didn’t do half bad. It did feel like he was living out some revenge fantasy through this story. Jett is apparently telekinetic, which is mentioned exactly twice in the book and by the end the South has risen again, it seems. Too much going on, and though I think there is potential for a great story, it just felt weird and disjointed overall.

Oak explores a teen girl’s navigation of race and bullying in this impressive series kicker in The Jett Landry Saga.

After her mother’s death, Jett Landry moves to Port City, Texas to live with her father, the Private Detectives Markus Jackson and his partner Ashley Garcia. Being the only biracial kid in the Port City’s new high school, Jett soon finds herself becoming the target of bullies. Meanwhile, Jackson has a bad habit of taking on the city’s corrupt elite, earning him powerful enemies. As bullying persists, Jett finds herself pushed to the edge. She must take a stand against her tormentors or risk losing her identity.

Oak unfolds Jett’s navigation of her struggles with a compelling voice: he ably brings out Jett’s conflicting emotions and insecurities and renders her struggles with great compassion as he explores the complicated state of mind that Jett finds herself in while being the only biracial kid in her school.

It’s through Jett’s story that Oak looks into forces that cause some kids to bow to the peer pressure and indulge in bullying and other destructive behaviors and others like Jett and Melinda to find inner strength to last a lifetime. In Jett, Oak introduces a courageous protagonist, who successfully overcomes her fears and vulnerabilities, and readers will find themselves rooting for her throughout. Markus and Ashley are equally convincing.

The narrative is swiftly paced, the tension stays high, and Oak’s attention to detail makes the reader care all the more strongly about the Jett’s story.

Despite its formulaic plot, Oak offers a sober appraisal of bullying and racism. The readers will wait eagerly for the sequel.

Jett Landry: The Fuse is a riveting tale of a girl fighting racism and bullying. Jett, a teen girl was called half breed at school because of her white father and black mother. Being the only biracial kid in Port City's new high school, Jett was bullied every now and then by Mike. Mike treats her badly every time. Jett's father Markus Jackson is a private detective. His colleague Ashley Garcia picked Jett from school one day. Seeing Jett all sad, her father Markus asked Jett why she is sad. With her father's guidance, Jett is now all set to deal with bully kids like Mike. Next time when Mike troubled her, she called him asshole. Jett, Mike and his friends got involved in other fight soon. This time Jett, Mike and Billy's father were called to the school. Billy's father was sorry for his son behavior but Mike's father supported Mike for all the wrong things he did. Markus Jackson and Michael Krayton Sr were already adversaries. Read this story yourself to know how Jett's karate moves can help her and others. If you like reading stories around bullying and racism then go ahead with this book. Plot of the story is well written and the world building is mind blowing. I couldn't keep this book aside once I started reading it. I am highly excited to read Book 2 in the series.

Jett Landry: The Fuse

My Review:
I have read many stories on racism and bullying but "Jett Landry: The Fuse" is a powerful series kicker. In this book, Jett Landry is a biracist kid in Port City's new high school. This made her a target of bully. She had been silently suffering all this from past 4 years but one day, she told Markus about the kids who bully her at school. Markus taught her how she could defend herself and get into fight but only if she is attacked first.

Markus Jackson is a well-known detective in Port City. He work with his partner Ashley Garcia and a lawyer Diana Jones. Markus knew everyone's secret in the Port City and he wouldn't shy to use them for leverage. Dive more into this book to know what all secrets will unveil and how they are related to Markus's family.

Micky Mitchell has done great work in designing the book cover. Pace of the story is fast and will arrest your attention once you start reading it. Storyline is gripping making it an unputdownable book. I binged read this book and loved the overall story. Waiting to get my hands on Book 2 soon.

My Rating: 5/5

Jett Landry: The Fuse penned down by the author Stephan Oak is the first book in The Jett Landry Saga book series. Jett is a teenager who moved from Baltimore to Texas after the demise of her mother to live with her father Markus Jackson who is a Private Detective. At new school in the Port City, she was picked on by a bully kid Mike and his friends.

Mike calls Jett with different names like animal, half breed, etc. When one day Jett returned from school, she was upset. Her dad asked her the reason and taught her to deal with a bully. He taught her how to throw a punch to defend herself. Curious Jett learnt more Karate Punches move from youtube. Next time if anyone bullies her, she took them to the ground and often got suspended from school for this.

Jett is a fighter. A strong girl like her is an inspiration for other kids not to be the victim of other's bullies. Parents play an important role in shaping their kids. The values that Mike's father provided him weren't good so Mike became a bully kid. Language of the book is lucid. The story hooked me right from the front page and is worth reading. One couldn't afford to miss to read this book at all.

This was a free book that I got for accidentally clicking on the wrong book when I was entering giveaways. I thought, “what the heck? Might as well try it.”

The writing in the book was very amateurish. The author also seems to enjoy the idea of beating up their high school bullies. It’s like social justice warriors turned to real warrior who beats up her bullies.

There was no plot, just here’s a diary of all the things that happened with only a loose connection between them.

I skimmed the second half of the book, because I was tired of hearing the accounts of the protagonists repeated encounters with her bullies.

Outstanding Read

This is a book is about one girl's fight against racism. I chose the rating because I couldn't put this book down. Jett is a bi-racial teenager who was bullied at her high school, a school where students were from rich, white families. The bullies were members of the football team who were not punished, but Jett was. She took karate lessons and got good enough to kick the asses of her bullies.
When hard-core, supremacist people moved into her city/county, her Mom and Dad were unfortunately "sold out" and we're recommended.
